Removing the battery cover on the Nexus is rather irritating, is there a specific way YOU remove it, I know its simply sliding it up - but I'm still having troubles.
Heh. Knew I wouldn't be the only one having problems with it.
I posted a thread about this some time ago. This was the method that worked for me:
nDrg said:
Try this, hold your phone in your left hand facing down with your index finger and thumb just on the sides of the phone just above the capacitive buttons. Then place the ball of your right palm on the back of the cover and push up while applying a little force, it should open pretty easily.

I find it easiest to hold it so the top of the phone is facing away from you, face down. hold it so your fingers are on the screen side, kind of going down the length of the screen on each side and place your thumbs about 1/2" in from the edge, just above the split.. on the half that slides off.
Now... counter intuitively... press your thumbs down into the phone with a little bit of forward motion too (the direction it slides). If you have your thumbs in the right places, you'll easily defeat the hooks that hold the case together and it'll pop right open.
@grainysand the palm method also works pretty well too, but I still tend to need at least 2-3 tries removing it that way. it's rare that I can't get the shell apart my first try using the thumb tactic.
good luck! it must have been pretty hilarious watching me get the thing apart the first couple times i tried.
??? Hmmmm... ....Hold it in your left hand with screen facing down...put left thumb on bottom of cover...right thumb just below the camera lense cover...Right index finger on top of the phone...making sure you're not holding the cover down with it...and push up with both thumbs.

I have successfully set up my finger scanner to work reliably with one hand. What I did was:
1. Hold phone in one hand when registering finger. Make sure to apply a good amount of pressure. I put my thumb at about a 45 degree angle when swiping.
2. Go back into Finger Scanner settings and add two more fingers. Use your same thumb both times, try to keep it at a little bit offset angle (+/- 15 degrees)
3. After registration practice a little with one hand and if it doesn't work well try reregistering your fingers.
4. ???
5. Profit

I did something similar. I usually hold my phone in my right hand so I registered my right thumb twice in the first two slots, each time at a slightly different angle, and the index finger of my left hand in the third slot. Works great!
I just set mine up like u said but during the setup i used both left and right finger and it works. Ex. Right thumb and left thumb all in one finger print setup

Almost the same here. I swiped my right thumb at different angles within the first fingerprint spot, repeated the same for the 2nd (So 16 unique right thumb swipes) and did it with my left thumb on the last slot. I get pretty consistent unlocks.
I did the same in set up works great. Ever since in real world use not so much. Have mine disabled right now

i also used all 3 fingerprints just to register my thumb in lots of different angles (all while holding the phone with one hand).
The tradeoff is that if my thumb print gets "injured", i have to type in my key (no big deal) but the positive is that it pretty much always recognizes my print.
I did this after living for a day with it only registered as one of them and it was 50/50.

This is exactly how I registered my thumb. Works perfect every time!
For the other 2 fingers, I did my left and right index fingers straight up and down like the on-screen animation shows.

I didn't even bother with straight down registering (illustrated on the phone instructions) as I'll never hold my phone with two hands to unlock it. I think if people register a print with their thumb at multiple angles and tilted in multiple ways, they'd have less of a problem. I can easily say that I get an unlock 95% ( or more) of the time now. I registered all 24 prints to my right thumb after realizing I never unlock with my left hand - ever. The outside rim is registered at 8 different locations, from front to back, and angles on the pad. The inside area just to the right-center of my thumb's surface is registered the same, and the actual middle of my thumb was done that way too. This way, no matter what part of my downward sliding thumb hits the sensor, it's been registered.
I used a straight down index finger swipe for the first one, and two of my thumb. It still misses about half the time on the thumb.
I'm new to the S5 literally got this phone 2 days ago. So far I'm loving it everything is good..until I get to the fingerprint sensor. Anybody else Dissapointed on how unacurate this thing is? I like the idea of having it, but they need to fix it or update It somehow. 9/10 times I have to put my password in instead.
I get mine to work with one hand 98% of the time and I can use 4 fingers rather than 3

I wish I could be disappointed. My work disables fingerprint security to access their network. I have to use pin or password.

The quality of the fingerprint makes a huge difference. My wife works in a pretty caustic environment and her fingers get kinda mucked up, nothing we can do will make it work for her. However, it works flawlessly for me.
Another issues is the limited size of the actual scanner makes it dificult to read the fingerprint acurately

+1. No issues here. I was pleasantly surprised.
Though my laptop and my work's timeclock have fingerprint scanners that work in much the same way -- so I've had plenty of practice. :good:
For the life of me can't get the finger print scanner to work well at all. I tried three different times setting it up with very low success rate lol.
Finally just do a swipe pattern out of shear frustration. I would love to do it one handed with my left thumb and tried to set it up this way to no avail.
I have better success if I hold it with left hand and swipe with pointer on right hand. Swipe pattern is so much easier with a 100% success rate.
Works for me every time, youhave 3 finger prints you can asign, use the thumb you unlock for all three doing them in different angles, even switch the angle up on every swipe when setting one print up, figure out the motion you would normally use to unlock it and try setting it up that way.I actually set my right thumb up for 2 of the the 3rd I used my left thumb just in case I'm holding the phone in my left hand, but you don't need to swipe your thumb vertically down, as long as your swiping the whole button it should be good, start with your thumb horizontal and move it a little counter clockwise each time till set up is done.works lawless for me unless I'm at work and my finger is dirty, witch is good because it knows, it's very accurate if set up properly., hope that helps

I've tried numerous times to set it up but it rarely works for me. I had to enter password so many times I disabled it all together. I'll admit that my fingers are frequently roughened or cut at work but even using fingers on my left (non-dominant) hand which are relatively unscathed only gets me success once in awhile.
Maybe it is just not usable for those who work with their hands, bummer as it seemed promising. I rarely had any lock on other devices and thought this might be a lock I could use.
Try again it works , good too, 9 outa 10 times for me,I'm a union electrical so my fingers are always getting cuts and scratches, blisters from spinning wire nuts. Try setting it up like I suggested use your thumb horizontal to the phone or like 45 degree angle like you would if you were doing it one handed, then turn on your power key to lock your phone instantly so you can test it without waiting for screen to time out to lock.

Trying again. Results are better - if I swipe slowly it gets most attempts but not every time. I'll try it for a day and see if I improve, maybe it is more sensitive to angle and velocity than I am. That may improve as I repeat the movement enough to get used to it. However security isn't a large concern so I'm not too upset; it's primarily just the usual annoyance when something doesn't work for me.
Maybe I am just I am expecting too much, do you have to swipe pretty slowly?
Doesn't matter on the placement too much as sometimes my watch will reset because I bent my hand and it hit and held the middle button causing it restart. Is there something I can fill in the space with to stop the button from pushing down? Maybe a very tiny elastic band?
Or you can wear it on your right hand?
Go to a watch shop, most new watches come with the crown held out with a small plastic disc. Maybe one of these might fit.

You must be double jointed or something, I tried to bend my wrist a half a
dozen times as hard as I could and even slid the watch as close as I could
to my wrist trying to intentionally press the button but I could not do it.
Good luck!
Have a great day!
I have done it twice in a week.
Happens to me all the time, also beware the button is easily broken as I have learnt. The watch fell while putting it on and landed on the button and it no longer works

Happens to me Several Times a Day,, many times it will reboot,, if i try to attach my watch higher than the wrist bones my shirt or jacket will cover the watch face and i will have to use my other hand to expose the face,, very annoying when all you want to do is Glance at the Watch face for the time or messages that just came through,,, By the Way Switching to my Right Hand Does Solve the Issue of Accidentally Pressing the Button But Very Annoying and Makes it Extremely difficult to press the Buttons with my left hand
This was one of the most frustrating things I ran into with my ZW3, as it happened all the time. However, there is a fairly easy solution. Flip it around so that the buttons are on the opposite side, then run Set Orientation to force the screen to match. Problem solved.
If you are comfy setting up your phone as an ADB bridge, you can upload the APK on the fly. Otherwise, you will need to plug it into a PC and upload over ADB the ordinary way. However, getting the Set Orientation app on the watch is the hardest part of the whole deal.
So i started to try and use air gesture and immediately was frustrated with it. The instructions seemed fairly easy but also aren't crazy clear.
First it might just be me but I had to hold my hand further away from the screen than I thought. You'll hold your hand out a few inches above the camera and it will come up with the little blue/green status bar. I didn't see anything really mention this bar and was confuse by it. All it really means though is that the camera is on and watching. Secondly, you'll raise your hand about another 3 inches away and make a "loose" claw. I saw this because I was doing a really like pinched/clutched claw hand and it would NOT recognize it. Sort of pretend like you're grabbing a crystal ball rather than a gumball (sorry if this is a really odd example).
After this you should see the helper come up and show your hand. My biggest problems were distance and hand form.
Also, for hand id, you have to turn on "cover to wake for hand id" to get the screen to wake up with it. This isn't on by default. You essentially do the same things as air gesture, just holding your hand a few inches off the screen.
In the end I can't see hand ID as extremely useful myself, but the air gesture could be great in the right situation.
Good write up, spot on.
Found this video from LG that shows exactly what you described, so if you need a visual aid to go along, here it is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiAgEsH2p10
I find being able to just place my hand over the phone to wake and unlock rather my favorite use of this. Knocking the screen twice is ok for wakeup but it describes as being able to turn it off..doesn't ever seem to work. Opening up the music app and controlling it without touching the phone whilst driving (and the phone is in my hands free cradle) has been pretty useful once I memorized the distance and gesture so I don't have to look at the phone at all. If LG expands this functionality ever it could be quite useful..allow you to let the camera film custom gestures and connect that gesture to whatever function you like, and such.

Thanks for posting the video, I finally did it! I'm fairly impressed, but find it to still be pretty uncooperative. Of course, I could spend a lot of time perfecting my technique, but I think it really needs more development. It's just waaaaay too fickle, especially if you have to pull your hand away for a split second.
Hi, I dropped my phone by accident and unfortunately, it fell on the volume key which is now bend in the middle and stuck pushing vol up.
I can push volume down but the key is stuck with volume up and the phone would do that at random. For example, at some point during a call it would go to maximum volume automatically, which is super annoying.
Does anyone have experience with replacing hardware parts of the Zenfone 8? I watched this tear down video , it looks kind of easy to disassemble. However I am not sure if I can reach the volume key without removing the main board. Also, not sure if will be water proof after reassembling (guess not, but no problem).
Any tips? Thanks everyone!
I tried searching a bit but couldn't find any Zenfone 8 buttons (though maybe buttons from other phones could work). What I found instead is a complete frame that does come with the buttons attached to it, so you could either transfer the whole phone internals to it, or try removing the button to put inside your original casing. (I think the second option would be easier since the battery is glued down pretty solidly)
Anyways, here is the link: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003661617745.html
I think it will not be water proof after you open it, so you should also consider getting a new seal. (Consider that I have never openned my zf8 lol so I am not pro). But from what it looks like, it will most likely be easier and safer for the board to remove it before playing on the side and risking slipping and scratching the pcb
EDIT: I found the specific volume key on asus-accessories.com for 12$!!
Thanks for your help! I already found and ordered the spare part on https://www.fixshop-online.de/ I hope that 24 Euros are not wasted.
Hopefully, the whole open and repair process will not be too difficult.

I would be very interested in the results. Most importantly, if the spare part is a good quality replacement. Also I would be interested in how easy or hard such a replacement is. I looked into many of the teardown videos before buying the device, but those are usually from super-experienced pros with all the fancy tools. I would be interested in a first-hand report, even if it's short.
I will keep you updated. A friend sent some special adhesive tape but it hasn't arrived, so I didn't start disassembling.
The spare part, however, seems to be not available. I received an email that they don't have it. So I wait a little, maybe they can order it, but if it will not arrive end of April, I will just try to fix the bent old one.
@amenthes
I managed to open the phone with a hairdryer. I probably should have applied more heat, but I was hesitant because I did not want to destroy something, so it was a little bit harder to remove the back cover with a plectrum-like tool. Around the rim of the cover is a black adhesive tape, which I completely removed without any traces.
Unfortunately, I received another email that the spare part was not available, so I (not wanting to wait for a month or longer) cancelled the order eventually. Problem was, the volume button is somehow fixed to the case and I could not reach it properly. I managed to push it back a little bit, but could not remove it for replacement. During the process, I damaged the lower volume contact (as I wrote, the part is hard to reach) unfortunately. So now the volume down button does not work at all. However, the volume up button now does not get triggered automatically anymore. So I just push vol+ and lower the volume on the screen or via bluetooth headset. Works for me, as long as it doesn't go max. volume all of a sudden anymore.
A friend gave me some double sided adhesive tape which came with his replacement battery and I cut it with a razor blade to fit the back cover. It does not go all the way around, but I don't want to take the phone into water anyways. Besides, it looks just as it has never been opened. No gap at all, so the opening and closing parts are fairly easy.
All in all, it has been an experience. I will keep the phone despite the broken button, because for me it is still one of the best phones available at the moment.
Thank you for reporting back
@amenthes
Hi, it's been a while but I finally managed to replace the button!
I found a spare part on AliExpress. Not only was it much cheaper than on the other website, it is the whole middle frame instead of the button only. Delivery was expected end of June, however it arrived today (yeah!).
I used a razor blade and a thin needle as lever to remove the new button from the frame, since there seems to be no way from the inside without making things too complicated.
To remove the old button from the phone, which was bent and messed up (I tried to rip it off with a needle-nose pliers, but it did not work and it left some ugly marks), I used a sharp knife instead. I got inspired by this teardown video of another phone which unfortunately I don't remember. In the video, the guy used the knife like he would peel an orange. Like you would try to cut the button from the top edge. If enough pressure is applied you can pull the button out.
Eventually, I inserted the new button and pushed it a few times from different angles and now it feels almost as new. There is a nice click and pressure point. So I consider this a win.
At the end of the day, I did not even have to open the back of the phone with this method, but I learned a few things, which is nice, and, you know, you never know. Also, it gave me some confidence in my technical skills.

Probably yes, because I used adhesive tape and cut it myself along the back rim and it is not in one piece going all around. However, the cover sits very tight and you wouldn't even recognize that the phone was ever opened. I don't really mind because I use a silicon phone case anyway and I don't intend to take the phone underwater.
You can buy the original battery cover adhesive spare part here: https://www.asusparts.eu/en/asus-13040-01431000 but I did not want to spend more money and my solution works for me.

That's what I thought, but it worked surprisingly well actually!
@DerSteppo
Good day, sir. You have literally saved me from feeling extremely sad and even considering taking my phone to repair shop (which I never did in my life).
My story: I was snowboarding some days ago and at one point I fell on the slope on high(ish) speed. It was okay until I took a lift and took a look at my phone. It was almost exactly the same case as yours - the volume key was bent in the middle except it was vol. down which was stuck. Luckily the phone was still usable, I could adjust the volume via sound control panel in the settings which of course felt tedious but still not the end of the world until I get home and figure something out. Unfortunately while messing with the buttons now it was turn for vol. up to be pushed and there was no way to turn the phone on because it triggered the boot mode which wont let you out I came across that very video you mentioned and was baffled at why they made it so that you literally cant get the button from the frame without surely f**king something up in the process I started feeling anxious and thankfully google showed me this thread. All in all, I took your advice with a knife and managed to pry the buttons off a little and thankfully both buttons got released from their respective contact panels. So again, thank you so much man, don't think I could figure this out by myself
One question though. Not sure yet whether to get a new button instead of now scratched and still bent one, but was there any difficulty to insert the new button into the frame? There are two little 90 deg. angled metal things on each side and I am not sure if they can affect the insertion process.

Hi, I am so happy to read I could help with my experience! Nice to see that you where able to fix it for now.
I did not have problems with inserting the new button, no. With the phone switched of, I just pushed it in and pressed a bit harder on both ends a few times. I think it "clicked" in at some point.
It is still working as new! One advice though: you might want to consider buying the original adhesive tape that is shaped to fit properly. I used just a few stripes and cut it to fit almost all the way around, but a few months ago I saw that the back cover was slightly lifted and there is a gap. The phone survived a few drops from various heights in the meantime, so I am not surprised. I am too lazy to re-apply new tape, though. It's in the rubber case anyways.
All the best!
