Best g1 hero rom for me? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've spent every free moment of the past few days looking at Hero ROMs trying to find one that would suite me best. And I am coming up with a lot of mixed feelings about different ones. I was wondering if you guys know of a stable and not laggy rom that has most of what i am looking for:
2.1
Backlight for the keyboard
voice search
Car Home
Bluetooth(i know it is hard to find but if you know, let me know please))
Wifi working(and wifi tethering)
Autoatic Google account sync
I am runing a G1 with Amons Recovery latest radio and danger SPL. Thank you in advance.

None of them, Bluetooth does NOT work on ANY Hero/Sense rom for the G1
As far as I know, 2.1 hero roms do not have keyboard backlights.

I have saw some 1,5 that have BT. But I kinda figured no 2.1 had BT yet. And how sure are you on the backlight, because that is kind of a big one for me. Thanks for your help in advance

You ask for too much. Options 1, 2, and 5 won't work. Options 2 and 5 won't work with Option 1. I'm not sure about Option 4. I'm sure Option 3 will work but only with the Android Search Widget. Option 6 will work for most ROMs. And Option 7 is a yes for most ROMs.

No, no sense rom for the G1 has bluetooth, never has, probably never will

Unless HTC shows us some LOOOVE! And stops calling us Illegal ROM MAKERS who BREAK RULES, but then BE NICE. COUGH COUGH loll.

Actually, that's Motorola. HTC has given XDA to continue its pursuit in the perfect Sense ROM (I'm pretty sure HTC "borrows" some of these changes"). And the only confrontation I've heard about with legal issues was Drizzy vs. Motorola (Not sure if this was true or not, but not my place to judge) and Google vs. Cyanogen (Which was over a perfectly valid, but imo stupid, reason)

Oh. Well then they're losers if they steal from us. And yeah, because Google tried to stand in our way to not allow us to get what we want, but Cyanoegn found his way around things, and now they're cool again =D
"You do the math of putting those together" -Chahk

So you guys are sure Backlight won't work with 2.1 hero?

No. It won't. And neither will BlueTooth. But you're all set for Tethering, Voice Search, Google Sync, Car Home, and 2.1 is up to you. I suggest Vegaman's Legend Port.

There is a temporary fix of changing the Display brightness WHILE the keyboard is open (for some reason this rubs the right file in the system the right way) and all lights on the phone will automagically light up, but this stops as soon as the phone is put into sllep mode (or standby, or screen turns off, using synonyms now, aren't I?)

Stop using big words like Synonyms, Antonyms, Metaphores, Onomatopoeias, it makes you sound smart and like you know what you're doing, and no body likes a person who uses big words and proper gramer. Btw, don;t spel ur wordz ritte.

Settings>Sound & Display>Brightness, move the slider while the keyboard is out

There's an app in the market i use to manually turn on and off the keyboard backlight. It's called "Backlight Off", and its pretty useful since I have a white G1 and sometimes the backlight makes the keys unreadable. I haven't tried any 2.1 sense roms, so maybe this app can fix it? Lol, I might be way off but its worth a shot=p

Do you think bluetooth or LED will ever work under Hero

The reason I ask is not at all to be critical of the development going on with Hero, on the contrary, I think it's going very well. However, today is my last day to return the G1 I got 14 days ago. I love Hero and want to use it on a device with a hardware keyboard. The G1 is the only option for that, but I use bluetooth every day in my car. It's a must.
So, I forward the question, are you guys making progress? Can we count on it getting done or should I take this phone back to t-mobile today?
I'm quite confident for the LEDs. The Hero builds are not such a radical departure that we've all been left stranded in the atlantic, so to speak. When it boils down to it, they're still just Android-1.5, with some extra HTC glue on the top.
However, if you're in doubt, why not return it and get the Hero (when it's released)? HTC's software keyboard is easily the best I've used, so the loss of a hardware one wouldn't sting so much. Sure, you'd have to wait for root, but at least you've have a no-nonsense Rosie.
Magic 8 Ball says: "maybe"
in all honesty no one even knows for sure if Hero is coming to tmo. That might be a factor as well. Really though it's still android..and the g1 is a great phone..we don't know anything about the hero phone from a reliability/battery life/heat standpoint yet. It could prove to be the next iphone 3gs.
Keeping it
Ok guys, I'm keeping the phone. That means I got 2 years of Android goodness ahead of me on this G1. Keep up the awesome work Hero guys, and please get bluetooth running. The rom is fast enough now, and bluetooth's the only thing keeping me from jumping over.
Thanks for the help.

Having gotten bluetooth 98% working under Hero rom I'm pretty confident I'll have a solution soon. I have a feeling that with LED's non-functional and tying up the I2C bus with requests to turn on/off the leds which end up failing, this is causing bluetooth to not be able to disable the uart clock, which coincidentally has to be done over the I2C bus. I know, it sounds like a foreign language just be rest assured a fix for both "SHOULD" be coming soon.
Any news?
15 days passed... got any more progress on bluetooth and leds? Please say yes
Is there any workaround?

be patient. why not downgrade ur phone to a rotted cupcake if bluetooth is soo important. hero is nice on the eyes..but in your case it seems like you need function.
cyanogen is a solution.works well.
Right now, I'm using a Rogers dream firmware, and it works really nice. It has about 80% of Hero (mostly HTC Framework, HTC boot animation/sound, and several apps such as the HTC Music app, and the Hero Java JBED (loving it, lots faster than the Netmite J2ME) just without the Rosie/Sense/TouchFLO (yet...), and its associated mods), and 100% of the G1/Dream compatibility (LED's, WiFi, Bluetooth, Audio, etc.)
And there are Hero themes for the Rogers Dream firmware that aren't unlike those of 'lite' Hero builds (without any Sense). Twidroid, Twidgit, and a weather/clock widget would make it indistinguishable in function, for the most part, from a real Hero.
Though I am hopeful for development on the bluetooth issue, and there's a topic (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=527027) that seems to be making progress on this issue, I can't use a Hero ROM until the bluetooth is functional, as I use my G1 as my main music player, and I don't have a wired pair of headphones to use with them (some kid stole them from me, including the adapter). I do have an iPod bluetooth adapter, but since my iPod 5G, with custom themed Apple OS, Rockbox and Linux, crashed (unsurprisingly), it's not of much use to me currently.

are you using the RogHero build? i forget the dev... ah just checked it's Maxisma. hopefully the hero stuff is done soon with BT, cuz i know LEDs are working on some builds now because i really wanna show my dad (who is so not a techie person) that i can run something besides the Dream stuff on my G1 lol. good luck to all those trying to port the Hero ROM to the Dream...
I think I'm using a soulife build, as my /system/build.prop has:
ro.build.display.id=CUPCAKE.eng.Soulife.20090522.075548
I forgot exactly, as I usually keep my update.zip's on the computer except for a couple important ones.

Are you a Newbie with questions about ATT Pure

Ask me any questions you might have about ATT pure and i will be more than glad to answer it for you here
Im looking to buy a pure in a week and unlock it for tmobile. Would i be better off unlocking it and having to work around the ATT ROM (I did this with my pantech duo and its not fun.) or install the stock Topaz ROM from htc. and if I do the latter (the best option all acounts) will I have to install any extra drivers the pure?
I am a newbee. I am just coming over from my Touch HD T8285 and need to know how to HSPL. I have read the thread but it keeps giving me a connection error. I am pretty familiar with flashing on my polaris, hd, tilt, but I am having a hard time with the pure. Any help would be great.
Came over from a moto q, how do I change the colors of the touch flo icons and bar, I already found where to change the start bar and the lower bar but touch flo is still att blue. Do I have to make a custom rom or edit some registry settings or what?

IIRC you will only get edge on this if you jump to tmobile. If you use the ATT rom, you will probably have media net setup automatically and it might be a pita to try to setup.
Maybe I read the specs wrong on the frequencies though

You'll have to install a new theme that overwrites TF3D.
I just got my phone upgrade to HTC pure from ATT. I have bought the unlock from http://www.htc-unlocks.com/ ( Olipro ) .Everything went well for unlocking but when I restart the phone it went to dead. After HARD reboot shows as:
Security unlocked
TOPA210 32M
SPL-1.33.01 iMex
MicroP-Topaz (LED) v11
TPMFG DATA
512,555 190,897
191,208 833,208
833,899 calibrated
Can Someone here help ?
Thanks!

How do you "reset" the Pure.
My old Tilt had a hole for the stylis to reboot it.
The reset hole is in the stylus housing, a small red dot.

no your right about the frequencys. tmobiles 3g is 1700 mhz att is 1900 I think. I dont use mobile internet any way so 3g is not so necessary for me.
You are basically screwed if you thought you would get "3G" on tmob (then again, they don't have good "3g" coverage, so maybe you wouldn't notice).
Return the phone or admit your mistake.
Yea really, I don't see why ppl are buying this phone specifically desiged for the AT&T 3g Spectrum to use on TMO. But, then again TMO does have a unique choice of bands who no one likes to manufacture unless you get it from them. Atleast, Nokia makes AT&T band devices once in a blue moon.
Questions
I am not a newbie, but have some questions re my new Pure:
1 - Is there a program that can map and control all or more of the buttons using push and hold - like hbuttons?
2 - What about making the zoom area usable for special functions?
3 - is there a working TCPMP that can play all .flv files including the on2v6 codec?
I've only had mine for ~24 hours at this point. I had a Tilt before this, but I have a couple questions about the Pure:
1. The TouchFlo screens let you set the wallpaper for the home screen, but the other screens all have the Death Star logo. Is there a way to change that without flashing the ROM? I don't want to flash yet because:
a. it's too soon
b. the HSPL program didn't work.
2. Next to the USB port, there are two holes; one very tiny one above it about the size of a stylus point, and another to the right that is much larger. I'm hoping that the top hole is the microphone, and the one on the right is for a phone strap. Can anyone confirm that? I'd hope not to damage the microphone with my repeated attempts to hang a keitai strap from it.
3. Is there a way to remove the battery icon from the status bar on top? I plan to use a different one that I like better, so having the other one there is redundant.
In return for getting my questions answered, I will check back here and answer others' questions based on my experiences.

It's true. None of the 4 national CellCos (is that a word?) are compatible with one another. The ones that share frequencies don't share technologies. To exacerbate the problem further, Europe uses 2100MHz, which is different from North America. So, if you want 3G to work right, alas, you have to get a phone from your carrier.

1. I connected my phone to the Wi-Fi at my house, and launched Opera. However 90% of the time the browser just simply could not load a webpage. Anything else that require data would not work either (this includes the weather tab). Every once in a while it would load up some data and then it would stop working again. Did I get a defective phone?
2. Like everyone else has asked, is there a way to change the blueish TF3D theme with ATT logo to something else?
3. On the Internet tab on TF3D, when I click Launch web browser it automatically directs me to att.net. Is there a way to change it to some other websites?

G1 running Hero with working BT?!

Has anyone seen this video?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlrQtaTH3ZE&feature=related
Person claims they somehow flashed Cyanogen's ROM the flashed Hero Over 1.1 and now you have Dream/G1 with working BT. Has anyone confirmed this is possible, or is this just some garbage?
Thanks.
From what I've read of the bluetooth/hero scenario, it doesn't sound plausible.. but I didn't watch the video cos I couldn't tolerate the repulsive music or the inabality to FOCUS HIS F*CKING CAMERA!!
I also don't see how it's possible to flash hero-over directly over CM, unless hero-over doesn't format the system partition as part of the flash process.. but I'd imagine that would cause all sorts of problems... This smells of horse **** to me, but we'll see if he comes out with a workable process.
Over the course of who knows how long the devs have been able to show bluetooth as on, this however doesn't make it useful if you can't have it connect to anything
I thought as much. Thanks for your input.

I went to the site and pointed out the fact that no one in XDA has come up with a working HERO in that sense and this guy must have SERIOUSLY brainwashed a few of these kids. One of them started emailing me hate mail and attacking me on Youtube just for questioning the situation.
There's another guy named ItsAnAndroidWorld who's got a video claiming the same thing only he never goes into the bluetooth and tries to turn it on.
I've been reading about using bttest and hcitools to get it working on a HERO rom but i didn't have much luck with HERO Sense. It must only work on a very specific HERO rom.
Yeah, i'm definitely with you guys because i've googled all over for an answer to the HERO rom problem with BT, and there are some possible solutions, but.....i'm not risking bricking my phone just to see if they're right.

Sarcasm never translates well over text... Unless you use italics..
getting a lock is a minor problem compared to MAINTAINING an accurate lock, does this fix address that issue or just the lock on time?
Well I gave this a shot, and now the GPS doesn't seem to function at all. The market tool GPS TEST, Navigation, Latitude, and the built in GPS testing tools (from the phone menu *#*#1472365*#*#) all hang requiring a force close.
But this is really no worse than the largely non-functional GPS I had in the first place so I'm not bothered.
UPDATE: Using "Fix Permissions" from Rom Manager fixed the FC's.....will be testing GPS now to see if it's any better.
UPDATE#2: Taking my daughters back to my ex-wife (oh the joys of divorce) I ran Navigation during the trip, letting my oldest daughter drive so I could pay attention to the accuracy. It took a good while (about a minute) to get a proper GPS fix, but once it did it remained accurate during the entire trip except for one instance where it bounced a few hundred yards off the route for a couple of seconds. This is a marked improvement over my previous experiences where it would bounce off route like that numerous times during a Navigation run.
So...better...but still a bit less accurate than I'm used to with other Android devices.
Italics you say. Nice I'll give that a try next time.
Sent using xda app...
Tried it. Got a fix in about 5 seconds indoors and pretty accurate. The compass is still all over the place. But as for accuracy it helped a lot thanks eugene.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I changed mine to ms-based and it works well. In certain buildings, however, it cannot get a lock on any satellites even when it detects as many as 10.
A weird thing that started recently is that in lbdtestmode, when running a position test, it takes forever to get a lock or sometimes to even find satellites. However, if I open google maps, it proceeds to quickly lock my position with 10m accuracy. Then if I run a posistion test it finds a 8-12 satellites and locks on quickly.
What is weird is that it used to be the opposite: I would have to get a lock in posistion test before google maps would get a lock. May also just be a coincidence or a placebo effect.
thats becuase google maps uses network to get intial fix.. change it to ms assisted not ms based which does the same thing
Thank you for the post Eugene, my gps is actually functional now, locked on very fast and is accurate. Donate link?

Thanks for the patch eugene373 but unfortunately it seems to do nothing for my GPS. Still takes forever for sats to get into view and never locks in to more than 1.
Unfortunately this didn't work for me at all. I even re flashed to stock then applied the gps fix and for me the gps was worse then any other thing I have tried. I never got a satellite lock, used to at least get 1 and it put me at times on the other side of the street, the accuracy decreased greatly

Now my problem is I will be going abroad in 2 weeks and could really use the GPS.Tried donwloading GPS Status but i never actually got a lock on the satelites (or it took too long that I gave up) I also tried the fix but the code (but when dialing *#*#1472365#*#* nothing happened lol)
I also downloaded loads of GPS software such as AndNav2,Wisepilot,Navigon,CoPilot,Sycig but 90% of those gave me an error when I try them such as this software cannot be started on your device.
Is there any good GPS software/app which does not require an internet connection (pls not offline maps but like turn by turn app or similar.)
Thanks a lot.
Personally i use Copilot live 8
maybe you could flash the phone to a clean stock ROM and then try again ??
Good Luck!!
So I finally managed to fix it and get a fix on the satellites
Now my last problem is, I need a good turn by turn app that does not use internet (except maybe for downloading maps first time etc.)
Thanks.
Hmm anyone?
I'm using Navigon. You need an internet connection to download the maps. Following that, there is an option to turn off internet connection. Go to Menu>Settings - second option from the top.

The application Navigon (process.com.navigon.navigtor_checkout_eu40) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again later.
All I can do is choose force close.
