call me stupid or something a lot worse but i really fancy getting an iphone but i dont know how good they really are. what software or cooking can be done? i have today just played with one and it feels and works nice. i think i will not get rid of my keiser tho it is a fantastic phone. has anyone got one and what are your thoughts

I do not have an iPhone....nor do I play one on TV. That being said this is what I know (or think I know):
1. Love the form factor
2. Love the smooth graphics
3. You can "hack" the iPhone so that you can install programs (in fact, I saw someone put the coolest game ever on one called iPhysics). I am really hoping someone here on xda-dev can port that one to WinMo.
4. It is NOWHERE NEAR as customizable as the WinMo platform. If you like tweaking, changing, messing with your phone settings...then stick with WinMo.
5. If only the two could be merged into one device.....
My 2 cents. Others may challenge my observations. Good luck.
As much as I would like one, there still are many shortcomings that make me stick with my tilt, with the primary one being that I cannot sync to my exchange server at work yet. Additionally, the lack of 3rd party software. I have been a Windows Mobile user for about 8 years now and I've built up a rather large list of frequently used applications and games to get me through the day. I'm also holding off for increased storage as my music collection alone is over 30 gb and adding videos on top of that, 8 gb just doesn't cut it.
Not quite sure how this thread fits in the Kaiser upgrade section though.

6) Absolutely no worry about which radio or OS build to use.No sleepless nights burning new builds.Peach of mind.
Cons
1) Price (I got my tilt for 150$ in ATT premier)
2) No GPS hardware
3) If you have an unlock one, it will be a brick when you update a new firmware.
4) No outlook server sync
5) If your are with ATT then you have to have the Data Connection even if you don't need it(extra $)
6) Remember you will never see the beautiful tricolor screen ever.. ever in your life.
7) No 3G
For me the cost to feature and can't customize factors are deal breakers

I just hate Apple!
Not to take anything away from their products....they do make some nice stuff.
I too, have alot of programs that I use, all my movies and music are ready to go....just drag and drop on my sd card. I don't need my whole library with me. I barely listen or watch the stuff that I do carry around. I walk around with 8 albums and 2 movies...that's more than enough.
I've seen alot of people lose their music going from one computer to the next or upgrading devices. Dealing with .mp3's & .avi's, I don't have this issue.
Eventhough the iPhone is straight forward, to me it seems more complicated. Dealing with flashing ROMs or Radios and white screen and bootup screens to me is easy. I know what to expect, I know how to fix and it gives me an escape from the wife.
Hope you enjoyed my story....I will not get an iPhone.

I got both initially. Returned the iPhone and was embarrassed I'd ever wondered which to get. While sleek, it's far slower (data speed) and has far fewer functional capabilities. I have faith it will eventually be an amazing device (version 2 or 3), but I thought of it as a Paris Hilton type girlfriend. It will be fun to look at and play with for about a month. When you really have to start interacting with it long-term you'll find out it's mostly style and not much substance. Perfect phone for teenagers and people with no responsibilities.
BTW - I've had for more girls chat me up over my Kaiser than I did with the iPhone...mostly because iPhones are relatively widespread here now.

I guess he is wondering whether the iPhone might be an upgrade over the Kaiser?
I would suggesting waiting until around the middle of the year and get the 3G iphone, i had a iphone and i took it back just based on the fact the data was too slow but other than that it was perfect.

# 3 is wrong. If you unlock your phone all you need to do is virginize it BEFORE updating your firmware.
# 4 WRONG! You can sync with outlook and do so wirelessly!
# 5 is wrong. I have my plan based on my Tilt and switch SIMs regularly. You lose visual voicemail but gain the ability to use MMS with the Swirly MMS 3rd party app.
# 7 is why the iPhone has 3x's the battery life of my Tilt.
My pros and cons based on using both daily:
iPhone Pros:
1) Sleek design. Better for me during the summer to take than have a brick on my hip.
2) Safari is the best browser out. End of discussion on browsers.
3) Once jailbroken your phone can have MMS, VoIP, Video Record, and a TON of awesome apps you wont see on WM6.*
4) Graphically better looking and easy to mod
5) Faster UI. Apps run a lot faster starting. NO soft resets needed UNLESS a new app fresh out has some bugs..just like ANY beta.
iPhone Cons:
1) No ability to receive MMS yet, though the developer of Swirly MMS is working to fix this
2) No GPS, but someone has already made a GPS device that plugs into the iPhone and does work! Not ready to be released yet.
3) Video Record has no sound. Sh!tty app release IMO.
4) No QWERTY.
The iPhone is an awesome phone, just incomplete IMO. That's why I use both. Situation dictates device for me.
For me, the iPhone is missing too much - 3G, Bluetooth stereo, Exchange sync, video recording, voice dialing and (perhaps most importantly) the ability to tweak and customize to my heart's content.
However, I got one for my wife for Christmas, and for her it's the perfect device - something that "just works" and doesn't require daily maintenance, hacks and 3d-party replacement programs just to make it useable. I tried several times in the past to get her to use Palm/WM devices, and they always ended up in a drawer after a couple of weeks. The iPhone, on the other hand, is her constant companion.
If they eventually implement most or all of the missing features I listed above, I'll seriously consider getting one. It really is an amazing device with great hardware and a GUI that's leagues ahead of anything else on the market.
i just like my Universal and Blueangel. I have already burnt mah fingers twice by choosing imac.

Oh, ok then. All the detailed arguments didn't sway me, but since you called my phone a brick I'm convinced.
After the launch of SDK, iPhone will be a totally different device.. Imagine a WM with no 3rd Party Software/mods installed.
All of my previous WM devies had new kind of problems. Some had touch screen alignment problem, random muting, even these 400mhz processors are hell slow.
Im not saying that iPhones are perfect devices but alteast are better than these PPCs.
I own a Kaiser and an iPhone.
I'm a cooker, and you will see in my signature my work. I like to tweak, mod etc... I also own an unlimited internet HSDPA connection.
Therefore I prefer the iPhone.
It don't own a GPS, but I don't use it eveyday! (for this, I use the Kaiser or my Asus 620BT)
-The display drivers are crap on the Kaiser (everybody knows), they are wonderfull on the iPhone, you seems to have 3x more power.
-The camera is a little better on the iPhone (I can send same photos at the same time I took with the devices to compare)
-The screen is better on the iPhone (16/9 half-vga) and the colors are better (every photos or videos are improved on this device), iphone can play H264. if I put the same video on the Kaiser with TCPMP or CORE PLayer, I only see a slideshow
-the Multitouch is really good to slide/resize your photos.
-The touch is better on the iPhone (no need to push on the screen) this is a technology patented by Apple.
-Safari (the web brower) is better than any other brower on WinMo (better than Opera Mini wich is for me the best). Even Maps wich display better than googleMaps ans all other app (dialer, sms, calendar with wheel etc).
-The antenna Wifi is better on the iPhone too.
Well (for me) everything is better on the iPhone, the only regret is the speed while I surf the internet (HSDPA is better than Edge) I can reach 1MB/S on the Kaiser.
For the Visio on the Kaiser: nobody can hear me clearly (when I am in a quiet environment), I need to shout on the mic, so the person can not see my face anymore. so it's unusable for me. I don't know if this issue is on all Kaiser (I own the french Vodafone SFR rom).
the MP3 player is better on the iPhone (I use Shure E2C (99$ headset) on both devices), the quality is far better. and I prefer to navigate using the iPhone.
I like to share the internet connexion on the Kaiser but I can do it on the iPhone too, but as I said it's faster on the Kaiser...
Someone put the price of the iPhone as "CON" but the Kaiser come with 128MB and the iPhone with 8GB...
In fact, I think it depend of what you need, you will prefer the kaiser or the iPhone. I read someone hates Apple,ok, but I hate HTC for not doing a better 3D display driver like the other 8000+ persons who have signed the petition.
At least Apple provided good drivers and a fast device

In all reality, the whole reason I switched to the G1 from a 3G iPhone was because of all of Apple's shaddy practices with releasing new firmware / new phones. Anyway, my question to those of you that have owned both is this: do you really love your G1 as much as you did your iPhone. Now, don't flame me for the way I asked this, and I will support what I say here.
My first, biggest problem, with the G1 was no native Exchange support. That was almost a deal breaker for me on the first day. I did not want to have to pay to have support for business applications that should be included on a smart phone in this day and age. And, to those of you that had an iPhone, you probably already know that it's really nice that all of your contacts sync with your Exchange server. Imagine my surprise when I stuck my sim card into the G1 and only had my contacts from the last phone that utilized saving contacts to the sim. Major disappointment!
2nd problem with the G1 is the lack of a well organized app store. How many times have you searched for a specific application, and came up with nothing, but if you change that search query to become a little more complete, all of a sudden you get a hit. (Ex. searching for weather and then searching for weather widget. (this isn't an exact example, just an example))
3rd problem is, the iPhone is way more responsive. Yes, I know you can install other roms that are better optimized, but the deal is, it's been well over a year and most of these issues should have been ironed out. I had my iPhone completely unlocked and jailbroken, with background support, etc, and still got way less force closes and whatnot then the G1.
I could go on with more issues, but I'm sure I'm just beating a dead horse. Now, don't get me wrong, I've been running Slackware Linux since version 7 and many other distros before and after that. I've got OSX Leopard on my Gateway laptop just for the fun of it. I buy game consoles for the sole reason of figuring out to hack them, play with it for a couple of months, and then sell it off to a buddy. I'm no stranger to modifying code and troubleshooting things. I just kinda see the whole Android movement kinda flawed.
So, now I'm at a decision point. I've got about 4 days left on my buyer's remorse period and not sure if I should stick with the G1 or go back to my iPhone and deal with the crappy battery, and the giant hassles it is to deal with Apple. Or, on the other hand, I can stick with the G1 and ride out the bumpiness of the OS until all is well. Has anyone else been against this decision and maybe gone back to the iPhone and regretted it? Just looking for other people's insight. I know that it all boils down to personal preference, but anyone who wants to flame / offer suggestions / etc. it'd be much appreciated.

I intend getting a G1 this month, so this post is an interesting one to me. I have been using a HTC Universal for years now and I recon it is time for me and it to part. its been an ace PDA and some parts of it are still ahead of its time, but stuff like a good camera and GPS are missed. Now with windows mobile it is easy to get a program (APP) for what you want but you need to search the net of different companies and most times you have to load it from your PC. The Iphone was another choice for me but I felt 3G in this day is a bit pants, the universal has that! and the battery life is not good. So if you want my penny worth I would stick with the G1, even if it was only for the battery situation. Plus with all these roms to use and speed things up. Great I recon.

What he said. We've added Exchange support to many ROMs at this point. Most ROMs are extremely responsive (try cyanogen's or MyTouchv1.0 by cc or any of the ION ROMs for that matter). Most of the time, just updating the ROM will fix many of the FC problems you're having.
Like you said, it all comes down to personal preference, but much of your problems seem to have been addressed with the custom ROMs, you should try them out before you run out of time to return it. If it comes down you not liking it, you can always unroot and no one would be the wiser when you returned it.
The Market problem is the only one I still have with the phone (and I'm using JACHero too ). I can't really search for an app unless I know exactly what its called, but the Market works, and does its job, just a little unrefined (remember, the G1 has only been out for a little while compared to the iPhone, we'll eventually catch up).
I know that these problems should have been addressed by HTC or Google already, but because they're slow, we've done what we could with what we've had, and its worked out pretty well for us. Regardless, even if they released a fast, bug free ROM, you can bet your ass that the cooks at xda will make it better.
I had a 2G iPhone before I bought my G1, and I'm so glad I did. Mainly because of 3G and GPS, but also because of Apple's firm grip over what the device could do.
1) I've always used gmail, so no problems there, but hey, I'm no business user.
2) Yeah market search sucks big time, which is more than ironic coming from google, but it's not something that annoys me too much.
3)Can't relate to your experiences with crashes. I had jailbroken and tried using the backgrounder app. It was useless, the phone would constantly run out of memory and start killing my IM app (without my knowledge) and Lastfm. I've only ever had force closes on Hero, but on Haykuro 6.0 (magic port) I haven't gotten a single one.
There are ROM's with Exchange support (eg the non-rosie Hero ROMs) and third party apps. I'm sure google will update the market in 2.0 (donut) because surely they must know how bad it is. Not really sure what to suggest with FC's, just try out different ROMs?
The rogers roms are very fast and stable G1 ROM's.... and they have FULL exchange support built in - syncs calendar/email/contacts via exchange... The hero roms do as well but that won't be your cup of tea.

I use exchange extensively with hero and rogers roms and it works really, really well. You have a lot of control over it and functionality is spot on.
Get the Rogers ROM as it's basically made for G1 hardware, so everything works and it's fast and responsive. T-Mobile is the reason for such crappy exchange support - as HTC based ROMs have been supporting it fully for quite some time now.
p.s. - Google Voice on this phone is BAD ASS. I love the toggle icon as well, i can turn google voice on with 1 press, make a call via my GV phone #, then turn it back off and be back on my regular cell instantly... LOVE IT.
Well, I've been using JACHero since 2.6.0 and it hasn't been bad. Rosie is a little unresponsive, but once JACHero came out with 2.7 and added Launcher back in, I just switched to JACHero 2.72 Full w/ Launcher instead of TouchFLO. It's definatly faster and I do have my Exchange support which is good. It also now syncs my contacts from the Exchange server which is nice too. I dunno, on one hand you have Apple's death grip over the phone and it's OS and on the other hand you have Google with it's hand in every one of your pockets. Which is a bigger burden? The company that locks you into how they do things, or the company that lets you do what you want, but wants to know everything about it.
Apple's appstore just hit 1yr old. I know the Android market isn't quite that old yet, so we have some things to wait for. Everything is just kinda buggy. I dunno. It's really just a waiting game really to see how great Android can possibly be. Here's another part of my decision that I didn't mention. When I got the G1, I still had 6 months left till my official upgrade. I ended up shelling out $350 for the phone. I still have my iPhone 3g and could probably sell it to cover this cost without a problem on eBAY. Knowing this, would you return the phone now and get back the $350, stay with the iPhone until I have the upgrade, and then picking up the G1 (or maybe another android) in Feb when it would only cost me $99? Decisions, decisions.....

I haven't looked at the Rogers ROM due to such an old build date (LOL, it's only a couple of weeks I know). But, as I've turned off everything that makes the Hero rom, Hero, I don't think it would hurt to switch. The only thing that I see would change is no flash support, which is mostly broken anyway (well, maybe not broken, just not as useful as everyone thought).
If I was to try out that Rodgers rom, would I just need to wipe and reflash as I'm coming from JACHero 2.7.2? I've already got my SD card all partitioned up with fat32, ext3, linux-swap.
How well does flash support in the browsers on these roms work? as I understand it, not all browsers in these roms include flash support. In WM 6.0 we were kind of spoilt, as we had a browser called skyfire. It was very good at flash playing and rendered the page as on a desktop pc with a zoom option.
Well, you can see flash animations on ign.com, but on sites like youtube and hulu, don't even count on anything loading (I know there's a huge difference in the Flash content, but just an example). I've used skyfire on my Shadow (phone I had before the iPhone) and it was pretty good back in it's initial alpha/beta stages. The browsers just work. And, as it's built off of Webkit, I'm pretty familar with it (same browser backbone as the iPhone). So, in other words, flash is there, just don't count on it working on everything
So is there a stand alone YouTube player for this OS then? I kind of remembering seeing there is? if so is it any good? Funny you saying about the Alpha, Beta of skyfire, coz I thought the beta was better than the latest release.

If Hero is running good for you, then stick with it. Rogers is like Hero without the Widgets, Flash, Gallery, etc... it has the HTC (Hero) Dialer and Exchange and for the most part is like a cupcake build. If I'm not on Hero, I definitely prefer it.
As for wiping, I would say you probably have to wipe and format the ext3 partition, which is easy. But you'll have to reload all your apps.
Right now I'm on JACHero 2.7.3 and it's running really well for me, very responsive, but I was on Rogers for 2 months before that.
I never really liked Skyfire too much. It was just OK. I prefer the G1 web browsing, especially with the HTC Browser (Hero/Rogers) and multi-touch.
The flash is overrated, nothing special. It'll load things like flash banners and minor flash pieces just fine. Don't expect to stream flash video, games, or full blown flash websites.
Stand alone youtube player works great.
I have the Iphone 2G and the G1...For awhile i would switch back and forth...missing the last phone for a few hours then enjoying whichever i was using. The Iphone on TMobile service sucked as a phone but was quite the entertaining piece...the G1 lacks in 3D graphics and games but was excellent as a phone/web browser. If you find your self not minding the lack of service as a phone on the Iphone i would say wait and see what the next Android device is. Although from what i read it won't have a physical keyboard...but if you are enjoying the the iphone's VK then you shouldn;t mind not having the physical keyboard.
It all comes down to how well it works as a phone for me...I use the exchange sync but never sync my contacts...I have been a gmail user since the original beta in 2003, so i never had a problem with syncing contacts to the G1 but with the Iphone. I had to export from gmail to Outlook, then export to Itunes and sync to the Iphone.
I would say if you are happy with the Iphone on Tmobile's network return the G1 and get that $350...that's a lot to spend on it. Wait for the next greatest Android device.(MyTouch has double the storage but everything else is basically the same) I would save up some money then sell the Iphone on ebay and buy the unlocked Hero device when it comes out. Android is still an infant but is growing up very fast. Just think about 2-3 months ago we only had a few ROMs to choose from...now we have more then i care to count at the moment =)
I have always been a fan of cooked roms and cooking roms, but what is bad about the stock G1 rom? I could give a list of bad points that put me off the stock rom in WM5 so what is it on google? I did a search and saw that speed was an issue. or is it just buggy?

No exchange, no flash, no multi-touch by default. The rom itself is pretty fast, and the looks and feel aren't bad at all. Just a preference thing. But, just like in Apple world, as new updates come out to the main firmware, new features are added and old bugs fixed. I think that goes for any phone though.

I had an iphone on att before (and my wife currently is using it on tmobile) and wanted to put in my two cents.
iPhone Pros:
Iphones games are just as good as a psp, and pretty cheap from the itunes store and there are TONS of them.
Apps crash way less
GPhone Pros:
Alerts - iphone is still not up to par with this, any g1 app can alert you to new emails, etc
Util apps - out of the box the apps on the g1 can affect things like power, wifi, and even more system settings. This lets you have a much better range of util apps
If you plan to root/jailbreak your iphone/gphone:
iphone - Adds the above GPhone pros but slows down the phone a lot, it just wasnt ment to handle it
gphone - run linux easily -- way fun!

One thing that I can say is getting awfully annoying on the G1 is my mail. When I read mail on my G1, it doesn't correctly update my account with which emails are read and which ones are still new. So, I have to login to the account and check them as read in order for them to stop saying they're new. Kind of a pain, but liveable.
On the iPhone on the other hand, you read an email, whether it be Yahoo, Exchange, Hotmail, etc., it updates to the online mail system. The G1 tries to do the update, but most of the time, it misses at least half of the emails.
In other words, if you want games- go with an iPhone. If you want a phone for communication purposes (and still lots of cool games) go with a G1.
Ok I have the hero, but I'm thinking about returning it to get the moment. What do you all think? I know the specs on both phones already, the only reason I would want the moment is because,
1. Hardware keyboard, I've always had one and I like them
2. The screen
3. The actual phone part of the phone isn't laggy.
4. Something new, I've always had HTC's.
now why I don't want to get rid of my hero,

Hero to Moment back to hero
I bought the Hero when it came out Oct 11, I traded it for the Samsung Moment on Nov 1 as I was excited about the keyboard, processor, ans the idea of vanilla android (which is easy to dress up if you want to with home replacements) instead of HTC's usual memory hogging overlays.
I returned the moment yesterday.... Didn't even make it a day.
In spite of the faster processor and Advanced Task Killer, it was sluggish compared to the Hero. The cell reception and Internet connection was terrible!!!!! While the Hero was a major improvement over the Touch Pro. Also the browser was slower, and when I previewed a PDF file from gmail the pdf viewer in gmail was unbearably slow. (I realize eventually it will be rooted and things will change, but the hardware is cheap, keyboard is poor.
I found this phone to be more of a disappointment than the Mogul... and that says alot...
Now we need to root the hero.... LOL

I've heard the same complaints as frazmanw about the moment, which is why I'm keeping my Hero. I've had a phone with a keyboard all the way back to the Cingular HTC Wizard and Treo 600. In fact, I don't think I've EVER had a smartphone that didn't have a hardware keyboard. I must say though that I'm getting used to the OSK on the Hero. This I thought was a dealbraker too, but have since lightened up on that.
Not only do folks say the phone is sluggish in general, but that the screen isn't as responsive as you would expect for a capacitive screen either, taking harder screen presses to make it function properly. The reviewer also said that there wasn't a way to calibrate it either, leaving you "stuck" with its performance.
In my opinion, the reason that the Hero can feel sluggish at times is due to the amount of processes running from the Sense UI, with widgets, open applications, etc. Those four extra screens of widgets and apps can mean a lot more memory usage indeed. If you turned off Sense UI and ran vanilla android, I bet its performance would dwarf the moment. Not to mention the Moment has 256 MB of RAM to the Hero's 288MB.
The moment is supposed to have a dedicated graphics rendering chip inside of it, and this made me think that it might possibly run like a striped ape, but it seems it falls short.
The optical mouse also got some poor marks, not sure how frazmanw felt about his when he had it.
Finally, phone build. The Hero is an exceptionally built phone as far as the feel of it. It's solid. I've had the Samsung in my hand, and while it wasn't mine, it didn't feel like a well built phone, either. It didn't even feel as well built as the Mogul, and I despise that phone to my very core.
Finally #2 - The Hero has been announced to receive the Android 2.0 upgrade, at least relatively soon. To my knowledge, other than the Verizon Droid shipping with it, is the only phone that will have 2.0 soon. I think the hardware is solid enough on the Hero that some of the bugs will get worked out as the OS matures.
For those of you that had the Mogul or the Touch Pro, how much better did your phone get after it was unlocked with custom ROMs? For me, EXPONENTIALLY better. Made it feel like a completely different phone. I think we can expect similar with the Hero.
In short, keep your Hero!!!!!!
(At least until Sprint has a snapdragon phone next year)

my dad just bought a the moment nov 1, and although the screen is a lot more crisp. it stops there. htc has incorporated a lot of their own features into the hero, that the moment lacks. the contact card, widgets, and turning the phone over to silence a call( not a decision maker, but really nifty) the moment is a good phone, but its just too basic of an android phone for me.
Wow. I got the Moment on Nov 1 after trading in a really crappy HTC Touch Pro. It is undoubtedly the best phone I have ever had. All of the issues you three mentioned I have not experienced with this phone. Web browsing was much faster than what I got from the TP, no interface issues; all the screens moved fluidly, and even battery life was acceptable, especially for a phone with one of the fastest processors. Even more surprising is I read nothing but these same complaints about the Hero on other forums.
Needless to say I have no regrets about the Moment and hopefully will never have to hold another HTC product again - the TP was enough to convince me to stay away from anything HTC. Trading in a phone 3 times because of keyboard failures is enough to piss anyone off, and all that whiz bang interface overlaid onto MS Winblows just slowed down an already slow phone.
I thought I was going to get the Hero then trade for the Moment...But I am loving the Hero and just waiting patiently for people to mod the phone...Its only been out for about a month so lets just give it some time...

Well, for one thing, the phone is laggy at startup because Sense UI has TONS of apps that are starting up. The longer you leave it be, the smoother it becomes. If you're patient, you'll be surprised at how lag-free it really is.
Also, HTC doesn't recommend that you use any type of task killer that automatically kills processes. What will happen is an endless loop of apps restarting, and it will feel like a laggy phone.
Android has good memory management, and apps will auto-close after inactivity or if memory requests it. Just want to make sure you're not seeing the phone as "laggy" because apps are starting up. Just sayin.

I’ve spent some time reading about both the Android 2.2 (Froyo) and the iOS 4.1 update recently. Although it’s a pretty close race, looking at a side-by-side comparison of the two leads me to believe that Android is actually winning by a nose.
One of the main problems that were holding the older versions of Android back was their issues with speed. This problem has now been solved with changes that give the OS a 2x to 5x times performance boost which is epic, and there are even rumors that Google is just being modest and that the speed boost is more like 4x-5x. Can’t understand why people are still freaking out about the iPhone 4?
Its not all about speed mate,
theres simplicity (e.g. my parents want a capable phone which they dont have to mess around with). Some android phones still feel like they are beta items (Galaxy S and your lag/gps/UI grammar mistakes...I look at you with scorn. HTC with theri MT skimping and crappy graphics chips.
Theres also the availiability of well-made apps. No dissing to android devs who do an awesome job, googles carefree market attitude DOES allow a lot of crap through. Oh well, at least theyre not fart apps! Theres no unified OS structure in Android and every phone has its quirks etc. Theres also no common platform to build for. Plus. itll be awhile (hopefully soon) before there are sufficient Android phones and publicity to garner attention.
Google's attitude is kinda silly. They are preventing android growth by limiting access to the Android market and to paid apps. I suspect this is based on their intention of controlling payments (e.g. Google checkout issues vs paypal popularity, government laws etc). Also, note the crappy music player, unfinished market software, rudimentary dialer app...and you start to see how android needs just a pinch of salt to get it right.
Not every phone has FRoyo , many take so long to get FROYO its redundant by the time they get it, so not everyone gets a boost in performance.
Iphone 4 has a lot of marketing behind it. Apple focus on one phone every year and it sells heaps. However, there IS a gradual shift away from IOS as people learn how to use a smartphone and decide to give Android a go.

It's not because the phone itself is the greatest phone of all time - It's simple to use and doesn't run slow (for the most part).
Android gives you the possibility to customize your phone beyond wildest belief. There's nothing similar about the two (IOS vs Android). IOS is closed off and the application store is a joke. On Android however there are no limitations as to what reaches the market. AppStore is of course 'bigger' and has more applications - but the Android Market has reached a respectable status aswell.
The developement of Android is always moving! Not all devices are at the state say, the HTC Hero is. But there's a good amount of ROMS that you can use. The standard HTC Sense is somewhat ugly and boring. And when using a 'rooted ROM' the speed is often incredible. If you use widgets such as 'Overclock Widget' or 'SetCPU' - You're gonna have a performance enhanced phone.
The problem some people have is getting used to using TaskManagers. On Android you have to close your applications yourself - The phone won't do it for you, as on the iPhone. The reason being multitasking - and YES, I know it's possible on the iPhone aswell since the update. Using taskmanagers also helps with battery life and of course speeds up your phone a lot. Like on the iPhone you can set up your taskmanager to end tasks so-and-so-often. Autokill, in other words. If ending them yourself is a huge disadvantage, I mean.
Widgets. How could you live without them? You know the pretty neat things that make your phone look really SEXY.
- Widgets alone is a dealbreaker. Get Android. You won't be disappointed!

The iPhone does that automatically. Mainly because it's easier. I guess it takes a load of people's minds. Or simply because consumers can't complain about slow speeds
Android doesn't. That's why we have Task Managers/Killers. If you don't use a taskmanager, your device can't be much responsive [?]

We have task killers, cause people like to complicate things. They don't understand phone isn't a PC, so they think it's bad that there are some apps in the memory. But this is not true. Actually... killers may slow down your phone, but who cares? It sounds good we manage processes by ourself!

Yea ummm android by default has the best application handling process there is..task managers are a huge waste with android and ultimately destroy performance. You must not understand how the froyo framework is designed. And it is far superior to the way ios handles it application. Android sets priorities to apps and shuts down when needed. It keeps what it needs spooled in memory waiting but after a set time drops those that exceed the time limit or if the memory is needed closes the app with 0 hesitation. This is of course the process explained in generic form.

I was aware there was some sort of application handling process - But I for one am not able to use my phone comfortably without using a taskmanager. This might be because I have a Hero, I don't know.
EDIT: But in light of this, I'm gonna try to use my phone without a task-killer. See how it goes.

Yeah, try. Some people say their phone works better with task killers, others it works worse and I don't see much difference. I have a G1 and it's really low of memory.
Anyway, I don't think Google will ever add possibility to instantly close apps, cause Android's assumption is to keep apps in memory as long as it's possible.
I'll get back to ya when I've gone a day or two without task-killing. Can't really say for sure if it's 'better or not' after an hour without task-killing, lol.
i don't use a task killer and i am getting +24 hours of battery life....
+1 to 2 days of battery life with android doing the task managing.
Can't say to much about the battery life yet. But it does run okay without task-killing.

IOS/Iphone bores me, even for the Iphone 4, you swipe tee screen and all you get is pretty much the same as when the iphone 2g came out..
Whereas on Android, you have different unlock screens and almost no two phones look alike.

I've had the phone for over 24 hours now, well two devices as the first one was faulty, so trust me this isn't biased lol. But, I can tell you that Microsoft has definitely gone in the right direction with this OS. Even though I was a tremendous Windows Mobile fan boy, it just didn't feel efficient or enjoyable towards the end. We needed UI enhancements and the amazing work of some talented chefs in order to have the urge to use our phones daily. Applications ran slowly, phones were constantly freezing, and the general public just didn't want that occurring on a $500 device. And though this is one of my gripes about Windows Phone, the ability to access your storage through a file explorer was truly a headache when it came to a general user. Though, with that being said, I do hope they add some "documents" interface to Zune and allow us to place our files on an accessible location...
But this operating system has the ability to be flawless. Microsoft's iron fist allows for the experience to be enjoyable. I don't need to worry about the newest version of Sense not running on my device and I definitely don't need to worry about a 1ghz processor struggling due to horrible code. I do miss my ability to access EVERYTHING, and I mean everything...I've been on this forum since my Dash, so I consider myself an addict at this point. But, this is by far the fastest Windows device I have ever come across, hands down, and it's a breath of fresh air.
My biggest problem with our community, myself included, is that we often forget that this is version 1.0 of the OS...think about that people, 1.0...and yet we have a decent app store, with an amazing OS, feature incomplete though. The features will come, but I rather have the OS now, missing features, than have to wait for it...I can tell you that this will definitely be a game changer. I have little doubt that microsoft will listen to our requests and implement the majority of what we're asking...with the exception of the obvious, such as root access and the ability to completely screw up your phone, like some of you are so hell bent on doing while accessing everything.
The random hiccups of black screens while switching back from programs, and other minor problems I've encountered I'm sure will be ironed out, but we need to make sure these don't cloud our judgment. Whether you become a fan or not, I wish most of you would just realize that Windows Phone on the HD7 is probably the best thing we could have hoped for, and I'm looking forward to the future of this phone and operating system. This device also feels amazing...not sure where the build quality questions came from, I don't even have the pink camera issue...it's a much better feel in my hand than my HD2. I thought of putting this in the WP7 general, but since my thoughts are based on my device, thought I'd keep it here...
I agree 100%. The phone is not all-the-way complete yet, but I can honestly say I am very impressed. If the few tweaks are made here and there (e.g. visual voicemail, extended settings, file system, sideload apps, etc.) we could have the best OS of them all.
I cannot understate the elegance and beauty of this device and OS. It is sooo smooth - this is what the mobile experience should be. Some complain about no Multitasking, but I am not one of them. In fact I think it kills battery and can cause major problems. Plus it's mobile phone! How many tasks do I need to do at once? One!
Anyway, I'm loving it so far - even though I'd like to make some simple changes like searching the marketplace for apps only and leaving music out of the results.
BTW- the Market is coming along nicely. Pretty good selection to far.

I agree. I love my EVO, not a fan of my DROID X and can't stand the lag of the Samsung Fascinate.
I picked up the HD7 recently while waiting for the Dell Venue Pro to release. I cannot stress how smooth the OS really is. I have tweaked and tuned and spent countless hours on ROM loads with my EVO all the find out they are very good but are always in need of tuning. Perhaps some of that is due to my constant reading of these forums and seeing updates
I know some have said no Unified Messaging. I rarely use it just like cut and paste.
I wish they would have persistent notication icons on the top bar. That would be nice. I received an update on the Marketplace and didn't realize it was there until I scrolled down. The updates are nice though.
I can say that I am very happy with some of the well known APPS. They seem to be better looking than IPHONES or ANDROIDS. Shazam is nice with the Zune button/integration feature. Huffington Post needs to fix the text but it is very nice. AP News etc. The APPS seems to be more robust when they follow the Metro UI theme.
Need a bigger battery for the HD7. It is not bad but could be much better with a 1500mAH or 1700mAH. I am checking my sources for them now.
It is worth the look people who are on the fence.
I agree I have used every OS out there and this one has the most potential I think. I also picked up the Hd7 Waiting on the Venue Pro but will keep both cause the HD7 Is a fantastic device.
I am 100% with the op, this is version 1.0 and it is a very good start, the os is buttery smooth and intuitive to use, MS have got this one right!
