Speech to text - Droid Eris Themes and Apps

A friend with a moto droid running 2.1 has speech to text capabilities in any application. His keyboard has a microphone button on it.
I have read that the Eris 2.1 has this functionality too. I cannot find where to activate it if it does indeed have this.
And to be clear, i am not talking about text to speech, where the phone reads to you, I am talking about for instance, having google talk open and speaking your message and the phone converts it to text.
Anyone know if this is in 2.1? (I am rooted and running grdlocks 2.1 rom, btw)

I was just talking about this to someone on another forum. As far as I've been able to find, Handcent has this capability and maybe a few other apps from the store. What I think we really need is the keyboard from either the Nexus One or the Droid to be ported over then we can see if it will work.

There's an app called "Better Keyboard" that does speach to text in any text field. I liked to show it off, but it seemed a little too slow for contstant use.

i have better keyboard and I don't see where it does speech to text. maybe I missed something? I checked all the settings too

perhaps you mean "TalktoMe Keyboard"
as for me, ill be waiting/wishing/hoping for swype to release a new beta with a mic button included

Better Keyboard app
I can confirm that the "Better keyboard" app does have speach to text feature

i grabbed talktome keyboard. Doesn't seem bad. Will tide my over until the speech to text comes out in the official 2.1, hopefully

Better Keyboard
I tried talktome keyboard too, better keyboard is much better and has speach to text

Swype vs HTC_IME?

I recently discovered both and I'm not sure which one I like best. What does everyone else like?
I was the same way so I kept both. That way I can switch whenever I want to man. It's nice.
I have both, but my fallback is the T9 keyboard from HTC. Swype is a funky concept, but in the end, a qwerty keyboard is a qwerty keyboard to me. I don't need another one if I have a physical one already.
Swype.Its so fast to type.
Swype, because now I can easily text with one hand while driving.
HTC_IME is the best VK around.
Swype !!!
and the 1.16.12.5230.t version even better
Swype it is.having to tick every letter is just soo annoying.and if I choose to, I can still do this with swype. Plus its a thing ipod users envy
Swype is good enough that I would consider buying a phone without a physical keyboard.
when i have to type web addresses in, i go with the htc ime, othewise, swype all the way (on a MT3G)
i use swype to play with... honestly i'm faster with a qwerty keyboard (i use better keyboard) but swype really is something to behold.

tried the 1.16...... version?
its much better at the standard 'single tap' typing than the 0.5...
swype.
Most defintely swype beats the htc IME for me. It just so smooth and make sure you get the newer version! Honestly, its slower for me to open my keyboard anymore...Now i have actually decided to get the nexus because typing will be a breeze.
I just downloaded Swype, it is amazing. I can type much faster single handedly (don't drive and text!) than with HTC IME. It is much more forgiving, which considering my large fingers and the Dream's tiny screen, is absolutely great.

hmm, didn't even notice that
the version number in my sig is taken from the swype settings
may be they round it off
edit : oh, file shows as Swype-SwypeReference-HVGA-trial-release.1.16.12.5228.219 on mediafile
i switch between three input methods:
swype is my primary for email, sms and such when at work, home, or out and about. ...and to simply make iphone people drool.
android keyboard from nexus has taken over the roll that ime use to fill since it has speech to text so it serves as my input when in the car so i can respond to emails the same way i can with handcent sms...just talk to the phone and watch the words appear
when i end up needing to surf web for a while or input email addresses, i still find myself falling back to htc_ime.
I tried installing Swype-SwypeReference-HVGA-trial-release.1.16.12.5228.219.apk via ASTRO.. I already had the "version 1" installed, so it offered me to "upgrade".. and I went down that path until it said "Swype cannot be installed on this phone"
??
EDIT: I also tried Apps Installer, but that always FCs on me
EDIT2: I uninstalled previous version of Swype.. rebooted.. launched Apps Installer (no FC this time) and the new Swype installed.
love Swype.....
IMO better than HTC_IME, especially with different lang.
very accurate for me, even in Korean typing!!! Cool
I have tried every setting in Swype, but I keep getting a little pop up thing with symbols on it. I can't figure out how to get anything to type. I have gone through the instructions, but I guess I need to watch the tutorial.

okay i cant take it anymore!

i really like my eris... im a recent convert from win mo.. and there are a few things that i just cant take any more!... im sure they are able to be changed so lets see if any of you android wizz's can help me out here.
Slide to unlock: im really tired of making pocket calls from my phone unlocking itself i really like the idea of a keypad or pattern unlock that most other android operating systems have... this is my biggest problem, it really needs to be addressed. im a it professional and a fairly offensive person in my personal life the last thing i want to do is pocket call a customer while being super offensive.
Disabling htc apps: i really like handsent sms WAY MORE than htc's messaging application but i really hate getting multiple notifications that i got a text message. i just want to make it to where the htc messaging application is not running ever...
expanded speech to text: i really like the speech to text, ive seen some android os's that have the speech button on the on-screen keyboard, i have some applications that have expanded speech to text. how can i get the speech to text as a permanent option?
Slide to unlock: Settings -> Security -> Set unlock pattern
Disabling HTC messaging: Open Messaging, menu button -> settings -> Auto-retrieve off; Recieved Notification off
Speech to text options seem to be related to the keyboard, Getting a keyboard replacement that supports it should fix this issue, I hear Better Keyboard works, but I don't use it myself.
Alternately, get Swype. I spend less time typing with Swype than I do yelling at my phone trying to get speech to text to pick the right word.
thanks for solving my 2 largest issues, bug help...
Much Thanks

Over showthread.php?t=624416 jonasl has moded the default sense keyboard to have a smiley button, a speech to text setting that is fast and accurate, and A LOT more custom settings. It is by far the best and most customizable keyboard I have used for android.
If you decide to download the eris requires the Low Res version.
All cred to jonasl.

If you root your phone and use a froyo, android 2.2 rom the stock froyo keyboard has talk to text enabled from the get go and it's also very good. There are two at the top of the eris android development forum that are very stable. I personally recommend kaos froyo v24

Anyone else think the stock keyboard is still the best?

I've tried a lot of different keyboards on my phone and for a while I thought the HTC IME was the best and that's what I used as my primary keyboard, but on my last wipe I was feeling lazy and didn't install it and instead used the stock keyboard for a while and I was amazed at how much better it is!
I make way less errors on the stock keyboard, the key layout seems to make more sense, and the keys do a better job of changing based on context (such as changing the return key to a "Next" key in web forms or smile button in gchat). The HTC keyboard still looks the nicest, and I like that you can long press keys to get numbers and symbols, but I found it very annoying that while you can see the alternate symbols on the keyboard, pressing the alt key causes everything to shift over a key or two. I'm always chasing keys around!
I tried out Froyo for a while and the stock keyboard is getting even better! It shows common punctuation in the suggestion bar after completing a word, and it has a much nicer approach to adding new words to the dictionary. I hated how all my typos ended up getting added to the dictionary with the HTC keyboard.
Anyone else feel the same way?
I too have found the stock keyboard very capable. Especially for how accurate voice input is.
My only wish is that Google would allow you to enter a line break with the stock keyboard when composing an SMS.
I agree. Coming from an iPhone, I have no problems with the keyboard, and Froyo's keyboard is really nice!
Yeah the stock keyboard in Froyo is awesome, I still use Better Keyboard just because I like the look of it better and ive gotten used to the key placement, but stock is definitely awesome, once its themed I may switch to it. I dont use predictive text or anything like that though so those features dont really factor in for me.
I never got why the stock keyboard gets such a bad reputation. I wish you could pick different word choices after you move on from a word, but other than that I like it a lot.

Are you still using Better Keyboard with Froyo? I used it with 2.1, but since upgrading to Froyo, Better Keyboard doesn't seem to auto correct my words and isn't prompting me for alternate words like it used to. I'm uninstalled and reinstalled too and it hasn't made a difference.
I preferred Better Keyboard because of its key placement and the skins, but since I can't get the auto correct to work with Froyo, I haven't been using it.
Also using better keyboard here (on Eclair). Love the long press to get to most symbols. I find it better than the stock 2.1 keyboard.
Here's a good overview of the options out there:
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-centrals-keyboard-roundup
I think the default is some pretty mean beef. I like the customisability of HTC IME, but even a totally stock keyboard seems better. I wish I could extend the space bar so it was massive though, thats the ONLY errors i make.
I don't know if it's the best or not; it's certainly good enough that I haven't had to use any others...
Definetly not as good as the "better keyboard". Multi touch without a delay when using sound and vibration. Something the default keyboard can't do, not even the htc one.
I use the numbered 1-9 keyboard using T9 since its so fast. But I never had a problem with the stock android keyboard. Some say its not good and auto correct doesn't work but I found it works perfectly.
Just fly thru your words, don't even have to hit exact keys, and it gets close to all correct.

what he said.
honestly, i almost NEVER use stock anymore after using swype. in fact, i don't even use landscape anymore. all one handed, all fast, all the time.
swype is one of the first things i put onto a fresh flash.
and, when i do want a landscape keyboard, i use htc_ime.

I used swype for a while and it's pretty awesome. The best part about it is the fact that you can type quickly one-handed. Unfortunately I like to use voice input sometimes and there is no button for that on swype.
Better keyboard looks promising, but I actually haven't tried it. Maybe I will.
I still think that I can type as fast on the stock keyboard as I can with swipe. I find that I seem to spell out words as I type them, and swype forces me to think about the full spelling much earlier and it slows me down from time to time.
Tried stock, didn't like it. Then, SwiftKey, that was pretty awesome but not as good as Swype!
i really like smart keyboard pro. i really dislike having to do extra presses to get symbols :\ why cant the stock keyboard just let you hold and get a symbol?

Disagree. Was just talking about Swype over here
I really like Swype, but there is just one thing that really spoils it for me. Entering words and text is just great. Love the way it works and I find it satisfyingly easy to enter text.
BUT when I have to enter logins into dialog boxes or URLs in an address bar on my N1, everything turns to Sh1t for me. I know you can still peck keys, but I keep finding it adds the wrong characters and symbols. It becomes such a PITA that I have temporarily stopped using Skype and have gone back to stock.
What I would like is a simple gesture like 3 taps of the Swype button to toggle swyping on/off. Then I could temporarily have regular keyboard behaviour for these short periods when I am not entering words.
So for now, I am with the OP. I reckon Stock is best.

[Q] Vibrant without Android Keyboard...

So I have a Samsung Vibrant GT-i9000m from Bell Canada with the FFC. Some how I no long have the Android Keyboard in my list of input method's (long pres on text input field) or in settings -> Locale and Text -> Select Input Method -> Swype or Samsung Keypad (only). My phone is unlocked (i bought the unlock code form Bell directly) and I used the one click lag fix for rooting the phone. I'm unsure when I lost the Android keyboard but I know for a fact I never deleted or uninstalled it. I can only assume that the bell unlock code or the one click lag fix rooting app are the cause of the missing input method.
Does anyone know where I can download the Android Keyboard? I've searched a bit but Android Keyboard give a vast variety of results even on the app brain and market.
Many thanks in advance for any answers!
Swype or Samsung Keypad
that is correct
those are the default input methods, you can always install more if you want
like the HTC keyboard or the Moto Droid keyboard, or many other available out there
but of them all i prefer the swype keyboard better
I recall having a 3rd option "Android Keyboard". It has a mic icon in the bottom left corner i assume for speech to text. Kinda like the Iphones voice search that's what I'm looking for. Yes I strongly agree Swype is better but when I'm driving I wouldn't mind some speech to text or voice search.
I did find on forum.xda-developers .com under thread 709519 but its 114mb kinda big for a keyboard. (cant post URL)
I might be wrong and never seen the Android Keyboard option but I know I have seen screen shots of other peoples Vibrants with this 3rd option that I assumed was stock to android 2.1.
Even my google search widget doesn't have the mic icon for voice search.
vLingo it comes as part of the phone
you need to install it in Samsung Apps
it's free
it does voice control and voice dictation
needs some minor training, it can handle accents
OMG I had it all along and never tried the vLingo keyboard. Thanks so much! YOU DA MAN.

tab s my only gripe

I cannot stand the lack of spellcheck using bt keyboard in mail app.
many of us use this thing for business. I am constantly typing up emails in hancom word, spellchecking then cut/paste into gmail....so brutal.
How about changing your keyboard. I use touchpal.
Or change your email app.
What email app has spellcheck?
The keyboard idea won't help as I am using a Bt keyboard. I realize touch keyboard has autocorrect.
I think you misunderstood the suggestion from DUHAsianSKILLZ - changing the keyboard application on your phone to one that will utilize spell check while using the Bluetooth keyboard. The recommendation was TouchPal, and SwiftKey was also recommended in another forum.
wosiek, I am hopeful your response is an answer...but I dont understand. If i put on swiftkey (which I use when not using bt keyboard) it auto corrects. When I use my bt keybaord, the on screen keyboard (swiftkey) is disabled....not sure how it helps

Haven't tried it, but Swiftkey is supposed to have a "physical keyboard" setting that allows it to detect a BT keyboard and take it's input allowing it to provide spell check. I haven't tried it myself, but found a lot of references to it when I was just googling out of curiosity.
Sweet! I'll look into that
I want to thank all of you here! The tablet is now "perfect" . SwiftKey running on tab with Bt keyboard is perfect. Nice to have a line of predictions at the bottom with no virtual keyboard in the way!
Thanks again!

I have the logitech BT keyboard and whenever I try to configure it for Swiftkey to spellcheck I get prompted to change "language and input." The physical keyboard is already added with "English - US Android Keyboard" selected. Also, the "Use onscreen keyboard" is not turned on. Am I missing something because I can't get the line of predictions at the bottom that you describe?
Thanks
Yes. Install SwiftKey. Activate it. Then (here's the revelation part)....swipe down and turn off the on screen keyboard. Will reveal the predictions
And.... Now with an update. This no longer works. Agggggvg

With a recent upgrade (within late two weeks), I also lost the predictive line when using my Bluetooth keyboard. This happened months ago on a different tablet but somehow I got that fixed. So far I've not found how to fix it on my Tab S. I really liked that feature as it helped improve my pitiful spelling and made typing a little faster.

The predictive line still works when NOT using a Bluetooth keyboard. My touch pad still works on my Bluetooth keyboard but I'm a bit confused about your question and what a "touch pal" has to do with this issue.

Anyone know if either "TouchPal" or "Swiftkey" has a plain default overlay like this one? I prefer the plain Android default keyboard since the letters seem larger when it doesn't have to share the key with numbers or symbols.
I'm new and can't link to the keyboard but here is a photo if you want to see what I mean...
home dot comcast dot net/~csurvine/MyFilelocker/Keyboard.jpg
Edit to add... I would also like it to have control so I can do copy, paste etc...
I guess what I thought was plain Android default keyboard was really Samsung's default keyboard.
But I still prefer it's cleaner look without the alternate symbols in with the letters. This allows for larger letters which my old eyes can see better and my shaky thumbs can hit better...
