Just can't install any ROM - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi,
after some theme ****ed up my CM 4.2.15.1 installation I tried to to a fresh new install, but it doesn't seem to work.
First of all some information that might be useful, dunno:
DREA110 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-1.22.12.29
I downgraded to RC7 (Kila_uk-user 1.0 TC5 RC7 112931 ota-rel-keys) again and did the telnet-thingy to install the recovery image, which works fine - but here's where the problem starts.
I wanted to install DRC83_base_defanged (as the CMWiki says) from the recovery mode but it simply says "Installation aborted".
Also wiping, recovery etc. doesn't work at all. No matter what update.zip I want to install, it's the same every time. I googled for like 5 hours now and can't find any solution, please don't flame me if I was simply too stupid for proper searching, trust me I did ^^
The same thing happens to me when using the CM recovery and the RA one. Am I right that this can't be because I have no root? Because if I can install the recovery images, I should have root, right? please help me I'm getting crazy, trying to make it work for the whole day now
thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english and newbiness ^^

the only thing I can think of is one of your partitions has become corrupt
its happened to me before ( well truth be known I did a flash_image system /sdacard/nandriod....system.img , don't do that )
here is how to confirm
from RA Recovery go to console, and type
mount /system
then
mount /data
and then
mount /cache
if any of those complain, then we are closer to fixing it
you need to erase the problem partition with fastboot
fastboot is part of the android sdk, you can hopefully find install instructions somewhere on this forum or google.
once you have fastboot setup, you need to get into fastboot mode on the phone, do this by holding the camera button when turning your phone on, you should see skateboards
hook your phone up to pc via usb
select fastboot on the phone ( fastboot should be in a red block )
then on pc
fastboot erase < the broken partition >
e.g. if system failed to mount
fastboot erase system
Hope this helps

ok the cache seems to be broken, now i just have to get familiar with the android sdk and how that fastboot stuff works

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3083753
will help
and you can get to fastboot a little faster,
use back + power
but camera + power
and then back will work

Semi-bricked HTC Dream (EU), wasn't me who did. Orientation needed.

Hello to all,
This is my first post on this forum. First of all I want to clarify to everyone that I'm spanish and I'll try to explain this in the better way I can. I've searched for similar cases but I don't know how really find a solution to this.
Today I've recivied a HTC Dream from a guy who sold it here in Spain. He said that the phone was crashed the installation of the firmware. What I've is a phone that only shows the boot image (in this case 'Telefonica Movistar', the carrier of the phone).
I can acces to the Recovery Mode by pressing 'Home + Power' and then ALT + L. In the microSD card I've a recovery.zip. It's not mine, I think that the user put on it. I don't really know because its the first Android system I touch.
When I access to the recovery mode, the first message I get is:
Code:
Android system recovery utility
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
I wan't to know if there is some way to go a stable version and later update to some modificated ROM with root support and extras.
Thank you in advance.
Sorry for school English.

This post is going to get moved to the Q&A section by the mods shortly, I suspect.
What you need to do is follow the instructions found on this post. They will take you through flashing the old RC9 image (in English), using the SPL rather than recovery mode. You could then, from there, flash a new recovery and ROM. (Can't help you with the language part. Don't know it -- but I'm sure it's out there.)

I think he actually means RC8 for UK versions.
Hello,
I tried to flash it with the RC7 for UK versions and I got: Model ID incorrect! Update fail!

Just noticed your HBoot version. Hopefully you have fastboot. (Press and hold the camera while booting up the phone, with it plugged into your computer via USB cable. Press "back" a few times; you should see "Fastboot USB" in red.)
From there, follow the instructions found here (starting w/ post # 53):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=493241&page=6
Has something to do with the fact that the European HTC Dream isn't the same as other Dreams.
From there you should pretty much be able to run any ROM you need. We hope.
As I am in the US and got my G1 during pre-order, I haven't had to go these routes.

Thank you! Now I'm in FASBOOT USB, of course.
I've found in this post a link to french site where they're explaining how to install a ROM (cupcake in this case i think): http://wiki.smartphonefrance.info/Default.aspx?Page=firmware-htcdream&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1
In the post the only talk about changing the keys layout. Seems that this link could help, I'll try to understand it.
If you boot up the rooted kernel using fastboot, you //should// be able to run adb remount and then install the flash_image script from elsewhere. (Such as by pulling it out of the CyanogenMod ROM's .zip files)
Drop that script ("flash_image") into your phone's /system/bin folder, and then run (as root) "chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image"
From there, you /should/ be able to run the "flash_image" script in order to flash a new recovery image (such as the RA-dream-v.1.2.2, or the Cyanogen Recovery 1.4) which would let you, from there, flash a new IPL ("radio") or SPL -- both of which are risky business -- or else you could just flash a new ROM by booting into recovery, as per usual.
The trick is to be able to successfully boot the rooted kernel image via fastboot.
Fact is, if you can do /that/, then you should /also/ be able to simply flash a new recovery image via fastboot (though you'd have to pull it out of the *.zip):
Code:
./fastboot flash recovery /path/to/recovery.img
Hopefully this is all making sense to you.
Now I've my phone full working.
The way to do it was enter with FLASHBOOT USB and use the SDK to boot.
Update with a update.zip (I used a Cupcake 1.5) and update the radios to the latests.
Thanks to all!

What does the bootloader screen sat (power on holding camera )
If it was 1.33.2005 (ie was rooted) install a recovery via fastboot main version if the radio starts with 2, otherwise the -r if it starts with 3
If its 1.33.00?? Go to rogers website and download the january 911 ruu and install it.. if you want root follow the new rogers rooting directions

well rooted or not with the perfected spl there is not much choice install the ruu or nbh of the official Rogers 911 rom and follow the new rerooting instructions.
If you follow all of it you will have an engineering split and can get out of this easily if it happens again.

I can't say I've ever made the RUUs work short of extracting the NBH file from your users temp directory and flashing it manually... but I always assumed I just was lazy on making the phone connect to VMWare on a mac.
Try this:
0) install fastboot/adb if you don't already have them (again I'm on a mac search for it if you need help)
1) Download http://www.rogers.com/dream-zip
2) extract DREAIMG.nbh from the zip file and put it into a directory accessible from fastboot
3) enter fastboot mode on the phone
4) run 'fastboot oem rebootRUU' to put the phone into ruu usb mode
5) run 'fastboot flash nbh DREAIMG.nbh' (specifying the rogers nbh)
5b) wait for everything to flash .. this will take a few mins
6) if the phone dosn't reboot its self run 'fastboot oem powerdown' then boot normally
Once installed + running your re-rooting info is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733128
i dont understand step 2
2) extract DREAIMG.nbh from the zip file and put it into a directory accessible from fastboot

Stuck G1 - but Not your typical

Okay.
I dont think my problem is typical, and Ive searched google and xda for answers. Some situations seem similar, but none exact.
Here is the story:
G1 was running wifi tether and on charge. No bumps or bruises, just sitting by itself. The tether stopped working, so I went over to look at the G1 and the phone was frozen. Display was lit up and working, just frozen. Had to pop the battery out to shut it down.
After powering back up, the sits at the splash screen indefinitely.
I can go into fastboot but I can NOT get into recovery.
I have going into fastboot usb mode and:
1) flash a recovery image (works)
2) flash a nandroid backup (works)
3) flash rc29 (see below)
4) flash hboot (always fails)
What I mean by works is the flash indicates it was good, but there is no change in functionality of the phone. Hboot gives me device errors.

I have also flashed a different splash image - and even though it says it succeeded the image doesnt change.
When I attempt to flash the original RC29 using the SD card mode or fastboot mode it indicated I need HBOOT 1.33.2004. 2004 *will not install* --- it gives an error (I think something to the effect of wrong device.)
I know my way around fastboot and adb, but I dont know what "hboot mode" is used for. For grins, I tried flashing the recovery in hboot mode and it says "waiting on device" forever.
It seems almost like this is a hardware problem that is presenting itself as a software issue.
Also - *sometime* when I hold home/power to try to boot into recover the phone will connect to ADB (listed in adb devices) but no commands seem to work.
Im an a loss. 10+ hours trying to fix this thing...
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Tried with a goldcard?
No. Maybe I didnt read enough, but I thought the goldcard required a WM Device? All my machines are win xp, obvously I can use a live cd to boot linux.
BTW, the SDcard method of installing dream.nbh (RC29) gives me a checksum error, while fastboot finishes but doesnt make a difference. Yes, tried different SD cards and ran checksum after coipying to the card - checksum is correct.
Any other ideas, or maybe some links that make a goldcard easy?
Thanks,

G1 get's to Fastboot, but not recovery

Hi there.
This is not the first problem I have had with my G1 and Cyanogen cm5 or cm6. Yesterday my phone was working just fine, battery got low so I turned it off and out it on the charger. So I go to turn the phone on and I am stuck at the bootscreen.
I can get into fastboot use the cam/power button combo. But I can not get into recovery at all.
At the hboot/fastboot screen I have the following listed, BTW it's the screen with the 3 androids at the bottom on skateboards.

What can I do to get back in business? If I have to put it back to stock, that is fine. I plan on selling it and getting the new Samsung Vibrant.
I have to stock 1gb card in the G1 right now. I have the following files on it.
recovery.img
update.zip
DREAIMG.nbh
In fastboot I get this for device.

UPDATE:
I have been able to flash recovery via fastboot, now just trying to get a good image on there to reflash.
Also curious about this.. friend's having the same problem with the same rom.
Well I am back up and running.
What I had to do was flash a new recovery image using fastboot. Once I did that I was able to boot into recovery; wipe everything and reflash a new ROM (went with SuperBad, since CM keeps messing me up).
If you need more details, let me know.

The standard procedure is to power on the phone with camera/power button combo, be sure to get the phone into fasboot mode.
Open up the CMD window in windows, CD to the directory you have the recovery.img file in. Use the above command. Then you can wipe and reinstall the update.zip with another rom.
That should do it,l assuming you already installed all the USB and ADB drivers and software.

So what is CMD and what do you mean "CD to the directory you have the recovery.img file in." I did some research on xda-forums about adb, sdk, fasboot. Do I need to do that and install all those programs. As you can tell I am a new to this. So I need some thorough directions. Thank you so much for helping. I need to get back to Android, right now I am using an old blackberry......and it totally sucks!
CMD will bring up the DOS window in windows. Go to the START button and look for RUN, them type in CMD. A black window will pop up.
CD means change directory. Example: cd c:\temp\adb will bring you to that exact directory. Just make sure you remember where you put the recovery.img file and CD to that.
I would go to this post and follow the directions to install ADB and the USB drivers.

I had the same problem in a rooted Hero, but i lost the recovery image as well as the ROM. I could not flash the new recovery image using fastboot because my SPL does not allow it.
Search in google for
Follow the instructions in

It solved my problem!

[Q] HTC Dream update to Android2 (wow this is hard)

I've been trying for a long time reading all the guides following all instructions and I think I finally see how all the pieces work together, but for some reason, I get completely stuck by fastboot.

this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Dream:DangerSPL
Says to root the G1 (based on the radio version, I think that's been done).
Next I'm supposed to install Amon Ra recovery
From this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
It says that if I have the engineering SPL (which I seem to based on the numbers), I should be able to follow these directions:
Copy recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0.img to a location where fastboot can find it.
Boot your G1 into fastboot mode (boot while holding BACK)
Connect your G1 via usb to your pc/mac/...
fastboot devices (to make sure that fastboot "sees" your device)
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0.img
I've copied the img to somewhere on the phone (I forget where) and I've done the second and third steps, but fastboot never sees the device even though ADB can. What now?
Copy recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0.img to a location where fastboot can find it.
Boot your G1 into fastboot mode (boot while holding BACK)
Connect your G1 via usb to your pc/mac/...
fastboot devices (to make sure that fastboot "sees" your device)
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0.img
Something must have happened at some point because now the phone won't boot unless I do it into safe mode. This is pretty frustrating. All these guides and none work for me.
What is the status at this point? Are you able to get into Recovery, fastboot, etc...?
When you boot normally and you plug your phone in fastbooted, do you hear a sound/any indication from Windows that it's detected in any way at all? Have you checked device manager?
You need not bother with the further commands unless 'fastboot devices' picks up the phone in command prompt. Fastboot didn't find mine straight away either. I had to change to HTC Bootloader driver when connected to USB in bootloader -which shouldn't effect ADB or anything else as the phone is booted differently and loads as a different device to have ADB operational, hence why I believe you generally can't mix fastboot/adb ccommands.

Sorry for the late reply. I don't often get a chance to work on the phone. I can boot to the four color boot screen that shows the hboot and radio information as follows:
DREA100 PVT 32B
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-2.22.23.02
Sep 2 2008
Serial 0
For a second it flashes to a different screen and then says "no image" or something then goes back to the multi-color screen. When I plug the device into the computer during the multi-color screen, nothing happens. The computer makes no noises to indicate it knows a USB device is there.
If I exit colored screen mode (whatever it's called), and leave the cable plugged in, Windows says there's something attached but it malfunctioned. Both the phone and Windows respond when I plug in USB at any time other than the multicolor mode.
I'm trying to solve the "g1 looks like usb mass storage" issue and it's not working. If I follow directions to boot to fasboot mode first, it only goes to the four color screen and the USB isn't recognized. If I do it while it's on normally, Windows sees it, but won't let me update the drivers.
I tried picking them manually, but that's not working. Wait... all of a sudden I see HTC Android listed under "Disk Drives" I don't know what happened, but it seems to have worked (I just updated the GOOGLE USB drivers using the SDK third party installer so maybe that was it). Let me try from scratch again.
Still nothing. By the way, I've never been able to boot to Fastboot mode. I've never seen skateboarders. Do you install that?
Ok, I've tried a series of other guides online. I've spent the last 4 or 5 hours on this trying to root and then install various other things. Using three different rooting techniques, I still can't get super user access when using terminal emulator.
What is this? Some kind of practical joke?
Making progress... I think
I followed the directions here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Dream:_Rooting
Which didn't use to make sense, but now are helping. I downgraded the Firmware per instructions, but used the SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse to root the phone instead (which worked splendidly). Now I FINALLY can get root using ADB though installing Amon Ra recovery isn't going too smoothly yet.
Edit, spoke too soon: I didn't see anything in the SDCARD folder until I disconnected the cable and reconnected it. I was able to use the flash_image recovery recovery.img file now (recovery.img is a renamed amon ra cyan image).
After installing Amon Ra, upgrading the SPL to Danger was easy to do in recovery mode as was installing Cyanogen. I also installed a different mod (biffmod), but didn't like it.
Now everything seems to work other than clockwordmod still won't install (but I don't really care since I can do everything fine with Amon Ra if I move downloads into the root folder).
I hope this thread helps others!

[Q] WiFi not working

I recently started using the "Froyo Melt" ROM and while it has been better than others, I still have a problem. Whenever I try to turn Wifi on, it gives me an error. This could be due to an incompatible radio or spl but I'm not too knowledgeable on that because I bought the phone rooted and haven't done too much with it.
I'd be grateful for any help I can get, thank you.
well first off power into fastboot by holding the back arrow and power. write down everything on that screen here
then what method did you use to flash your rom --- give us simple step by step

To flash the rom I put the zip onto an sd card, booted into recovery, wiped data and cache, and then installed it from the zip.
You probably need a different spl/radio for the rom
But you can also try flashing a different kernel
The cm6 one would work with the spl/radio
But then you'd also need to copy all the wifi libs over
Hmmm...you can also try ezgb kernel...it should autodetect your spl/radio
I tried flashing the ezgb kernel but unfortunately it didn't do the trick. How would I go about changing my spl/radio and what should i change it to?
Google "2708+ kernel" or find it in G1 development
Follow the instructions for flashing the spl and radio from fastboot
Then you're gonna probably have to reflash the ROM
i would definitely recommend the 2708+ radio?spl combo, but i dont think it is 100% necessary for froyomelt (but it would make your rom much nicer) if you dont want to bother just do a superwipe and reflash the latest version of your rom, this should fix your wifi issue so long as it is a software not hardware problem.
It sounds like mismatched kernel/radio to me
I had the same problem with my AOSP rom
Had to flash 2708+ spl/radio and ezgb kernel to fix it
And the DreamTeam Froyo post says that it has been tested on the 2708+ spl/radio
So I think that they haven't done anything to enable other spl and radios
If wiping and flashing again does not work, then it probably is spl/radio.
Downloaded the radio and spl stuff but I'm not sure how to install it. I go into fastboot and then Hboot mode and it can't find the images. Is there a certain place I should be putting them and should I leave the radio and spl in a zip?
Download this and unzip it somewhere, like your desktop
http://www.sendspace.com/file/g8rnkq
Copy the img files from inside the dream2708kit zip into the folder
Copy recovery.img to the folder also
Now open command prompt from the shortcut in the folder
Now type the commands you are told to type in the 2708+ thread
Edit: also be careful in downloading
Sendspace has many ads
The file should be adb.zip or similar
After trying to flash the recovery on the command prompt, it gets stuck at "<waiting for device>" and the phone doesn't look like it's doing anything. Did I miss something?
make sure you are booted into fastboot
it will say fastboot usb
you can test by typing in the cmd <fastboot devices>
if you are connected properly you will see your device

Click to collapse
Go into fastboot usb mode
Do the "fastboot devices" thing
If the phone doesn't show...
Right click on my computer > properties
Go to...I think hardware...then device manager
Find the phone...it most likely will be "android device" or something similar
Right click and do update drivers
Do "no", then "advanced"
Browse to the htc drivers folder and install the fastboot drivers
Thank you, both of you guys. It works perfectly now and runs better than ever! You both deserve trophies.
glad to hear! so you have the 2708+ now and your running froyomelt right?
Yes and it's the fastest version of Froyo i've used yet. Glad to see that my G1 isn't completely obsolete yet.
