I face a problem of "Out of Space " and I have already three partitions before starting install any apps.
Fat32 -- 6.75 GB
EXT4 -- 512 MB
Swap -- 128 MB
now when i try to install a game that about 20 mb , it said "out of space " ,
but when i see in SDCard & Phone Storage window , i see that i have a sd caed secondary with total space : 457 mb and available space : 366 mb .
i use the latest CyanogenMod ROM : 4.2.15.1 which enables APPs2SD automatically as it said , so i didn't install APPs2SD application .
When X is not meant to run on Y Version of android you get Z error.

I think we need more details. What game for starters?
The game was com.polarbit.rthunder2
And why apps2sd not suit for g1 as he said ?
Thanks

(Sigh)
More details please.
G1 with com.polarbit.rthunder2 (whatever that is) = 20mb
Then you get a message that says "Out of Space"
Are you using Cyanogen rom with a ram hack?
Where is your logcat?
Have you tried a different rom?
Are you sure the game is supported by your rom?
Are their other comments from other users complaining that it can't be installed?
Did you try a reboot?
What speed is your sdcard?
What does the output of "mount" come up with from adb shell?
As much information as you can provide the easier it will be for us.
edit: just looked up "thunder" in the market and is it Raging Thunder that you are referring to?
Also I don't see where 20mb is coming from because in Market it only says 4.88mb. Big difference.
Maybe try e-mailing the developer?
The G1 isn't fast enough to play Raging Thunder 2, it's designed for the droid and nexus.
However, if you read the description in the market, it says it will download ~20mb of data to your sdcard on first launch.. this will be to your fat32 partition, not ext4. Is your fat32 full?

The Haykuro spl reduces the size of your cache partition (where market downloads are kept while downloading), and as of the more recent CM's, the system Dalvik is kept on the /cache partition, which gives you about 3-4.5mb left on /cache depending on how many apps are on the system partition in that rom. Not sure if it is relevant but if he/she does have the Haykuro spl this may be the reason. The app is bigger than what is left in the /cache partition

Yep, you have the Haykuro spl. Go try downloading an app about 4mb in size and see if it goes fine (Not over 4.1mb to be safe)
I don't know of any apps that could meet this requirement but try games

Hi there!
I just installed Apps2SD and it works great! However, I just have a few questions due to my neurotic manner.
1.) Before I installed Apps2SD, I had installed some apps to my internal phone storage. If I uninstall them, do all residual files associated with those apps get removed?
2.) Does having more internal phone storage make my phone run "faster"?
3.) Is there a limit on how big I can make my ext2/3/4 partition? I simply went with the 512 because it was set by default
(My card is a 8 gigabyte, class 6)
1.) Before I installed Apps2SD, I had installed some apps to my internal phone storage. If I uninstall them, do all residual files associated with those apps get removed?
It might depend on which version you are using. I would say yes. (based on CM 5.0.6)
2.) Does having more internal phone storage make my phone run "faster"?
No not really.
3.) Is there a limit on how big I can make my ext2/3/4 partition? I simply went with the 512 because it was set by default
No limit, I currently have 1gb, but android probably requires some fat32 for camera and other data. (texture store.. etc)
@behelit
Thank you for your response. I was debating uninstalling all my apps and reinstalling them with Apps2SD enabled. Since there's no performance degradation by having less internal phone storage, I will simply leave it as is, for now at least.
Thanks!

1. you can simply move the app from /data to /sd-ext and vice versa. Settings->application->an_app->"move"
2. No. but you get more space for application data.
3. no limit but in reality 512MB is more than enough. I have a 768MB partition and it will never get used because /data will fill up before it.
Right now with 140 apps (all on the sd card, none on the /data partition)
/data: 61% used (122MB used) <-- this will fill up first
/sd-ext: 31% used (207MB used)

Update on Beta 4
It seems I'm getting mixed results with these betas. I'm not sure why this is occurring, some people have been able to get this working right while others have had a hard time with it.
Currently, I'm rebuilding the entire program. This takes a while because I have to figure out how to pack all these options into the program but make it small enough to where it will run correctly.
I will say that some of the beta features are coming back out...one of them is the search for a partition code. I suspect that code may be leading me into issues with certain platforms, so I'm going back to the 2.7.5.2 method of mounting (mmcblk0p2 or mmcblk1p2).
Also, parts of the code will use Busybox Ash (the only code that won't will be starta2sd, which will still use Bash for the time being). The startup code will definitely use Busybox Ash.
Until then, here are the links to the the last two betas and the last official release:
Version 2.7.5.3 Beta 04 - http://www.darktremor.info/files/a2sd/dtapps2sd-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed.zip
Version 2.7.5.3 Beta 03 - http://www.darktremor.info/files/a2sd/dtapps2sd-2.7.5.3-beta03-signed.zip
Version 2.7.5.2-1 - http://www.darktremor.info/files/a2sd/dtapps2sd-2.7.5.2-1-signed.zip
And, if you want past versions, you can view the repository: ftp://dtuser:[email protected] (ignore the smiley face...that's XDA doing that.)

Beta 04 took longer than I expected to release. I have done major changes to the code:
1. New commands: convert-ext4 - This will convert your EXT3 partition into EXT4. Just a friendly reminder on this command: Not every rom supports EXT4, so it is possible to go into a boot loop if you switch roms. Use with caution.
2. Reworked convert-ext3 (convert-ext4 gets similar code)...now a flag file is set before the reboot (no conversion is done before the reboot). At load time, the conversion is performed. This takes longer in the reboot process and you may think your phone has locked up...wait about five minutes before doing anything with the phone.
3. Repair is rebuilt...now it uses existing commands to repair the setup (reinstall, remove, cachesd, cachepart, nocache, datasd, nodata). Definitely shrinks the code.
4. Added fix_permissions program to the package. This may help with Superuser issues when using the datasd feature. It is used in reinstall, remove, datasd and nodata.
5. a2sd install is back!!! Both a2sd install and a2sd reinstall do the exact same thing.
6. Dalvik heap code has been shrunk and now creates a file called dalvikheap. Actually, the code has been doing this all along (since about 2.7.5.2, I think), but I never put the code in to use the file.
7. Low Memory Killer code has also been shrunk and uses a file caled dtset_lowmem to set the low memory killer parameter.
8. Replaced Busybox PS function with Toolbox PS. The issue with Busybox PS is that it gives a false reading when I look for android.process.acore (which is the main program when the GUI starts up). If that is present, the program thinks you are trying to run Darktremor without any command line parameters. This was because Busybox would report the process was there when, in reality, it wasn't (validated this when my phone was boot looping.) Toolbox's PS reports the correct setting. This should fix the bootlooping issues some people are experiencing.
9. New commands: usedtbusybox and usedefaultbusybox - these commands may help in diagnosing issues that is may be related to the native Busybox on your rom. a2sd usedtbusybox will use the Busybox that is packaged with Darktremor. a2sd usedefaultbusybox will turn back on the scan behavior of the program introduced in Beta 03.
10. Support for Darktremor Apps2SD version 2.7 and earlier has been discontinued. To upgrade correctly from one of those versions, use version 2.7.5.3 Beta 03b or earlier.
11. Finally fixed stalled boot issues (or at least my tests with several roms says so.)
See the change log for additional details.
You will notice that if the program runs repair and finds a problem, it will correct the issue and reboot. You will see a second reboot when the dalvik-cache clears (this is to fix timing issues with CyanogenMod...I can't control that startup as well as I can other roms). This only happens if repair is ran or you flash a new rom (as repair will realign all data). If you are upgrading from a previous version of Darktremor, you should not see the reboots.

This is Darktremor Apps2SD, a multipurpose program that primarily allows a user to execute applications created for the Android OS on their Secure Digital card (with the proper setup...more on that later). But, Darktremor Apps2SD is all about stability. The goal is to be able for all users of the Android OS to be able to take advantage of a method to run their applications from a secure digital card.
But just because the Darktremor Apps2SD is all about stability, doesn't mean it isn't packed with features:
- Move applications (both free and paid) to the Secure Digital card.
- Move Dalvik Cache to run either from your Secure Digital card or from your cache partition and clears the cache on demand.
- Boot Loop Protection: prevents the phone from boot looping in the event the SD card could not be mounted.
- Dalvik JIT for faster performance on Roms which support it.
- User selectable sizes for the Dalvik heap sizes, allowing a user to freely optimize their system.
- Activate a swap partition on your SD card and sets how often the swap partition is utilized.
- Automatically fixes configuration issues.
- Users can check the free space on their SD card and check the installation to make sure all is setup correctly.
- Runs ZipAlign on demand...this makes your programs load faster.
- Built in help system for easy reference of commands.
- All features can also be reversed without repartitioning your Secure Digital card.
- New logging features assists in troubleshooting issues.
- Commands to set the Low Memory Killer feature at boot time. Great for those people who are the "set it and forget it" type.
- And more...
Darktremor Apps2SD is not the same as Froyo Apps2SD. Froyo Apps2SD creates a secure folder on the FAT32 section of your SD card (this is the section that you see when you mount your phone to your computer) and stores the programs there. This is nice as you don't have to do anything special with the phone, but it isn't backwards compatible with older versions of Android (Cupcake, Donut, Eclair) and, because of the way Froyo works, older programs not designed for Froyo will automatically stay on your internal storage (unless you install a program that forces the move to your SD card).
Darktremor Apps2SD takes a different approach. Based on the original CyanogenMod works, Darktremor Apps2SD uses symbolic linking to force Android into moving your applications to the SD card. Because Android will not allow anything to be ran from the FAT32 partition on your SD card (and, in Froyo, it will only allow you to run programs from a special folder), Darktremor utilizes filesystems called EXT2, EXT3 and EXT4. Each one of these filesystems is native to Linux (the operating system running Android), which allows you to run programs from them (same as, say, a computer running Ubuntu). This method is completely compatible with all versions of Android, including Froyo. In fact, you can run both the Darktremor Apps2SD and Froyo Apps2SD at the same time.
Check out the list of Roms that either have Darktremor Apps2SD installed or are compatible with Darktremor Apps2SD. Click on the link labeled ROM List at the top of this message.

I love this script. I think I'm going to be using it in the next version of my ROM. Thanks for making it, it's great
It shouldn't do that.
Try the RC3 (about to release it): http://www.darktremor.info/files/a2sd/dtapps2sd-2.7.5-rc3-signed.zip
If that doesn't work, let me know and we go from there. There's a recovery log file that is created...I just have to remember where it is at (was looking at it just this morning).

i have not done anything as such because i am not too familiar with shell scripting and want to avoid to brick the phone.
I know you said APPS2SD does not work with stock roms (not sure why but you are the master here :> ). can this help or there is no way to get it to work ?
actually i noted i am missing a kin d of pre-requisite to complete the script: there is no system/sd entry when using this command so i guess no hope

It doesn't work with Stock roms because there's no command in init.rc to launch Apps2SD (which is part of the boot.img). Now, you can modify the boot.img (or get an already modified boot.img) to add support. It will retain the stock rom feel but has a modified boot image.

That is because the EXT partition isn't mounted, so Linux (the OS behind Android) doesn't see an EXT partition on the SD card (needs a mount command to be executed, which Apps2SD does, but the rom doesn't launch the program).

i have the same problem and in order to run A2SD i have to mount the EXT3 Partition manually ; anyone knows how to auto mount the ext3 partition at system startup ?!!
ok. i have been able to install a2sd correctly and have it running since a ferw weeks now. The only flipside is i need a PC to be able to reboot the phone since the Ext3 partition does not start.
Is there a command i can put in the init.rc file to autorun a2sd in place of doing a
adb shell a2sd
every time i reboot the phone ?
Hi, how about if after start up , manually mount the ext3 partition and manually run apps2sd app ? As I rarely reboot the system so I think this can be an alternative solution. but could someone let me know the command ? thx
I know it was discussed a lot, but since things are constantly being updated i can't get a hold of what is working at the moment. I will be brief.
16 GB SD card, First partition is primary 14 GB FAT32, second partition is ext3 1 GB.
I am using Cyanogenmod 7 7.2.0 RC1 on Motorola Milestone. I also have androidiani open recovery and kabaldan's mmcfix module installed.
After the partitioning was complete (in card reader) i returned the SD card in the phone and booted to open recovery where I formated all caches and factory restored CM7 everything is clean.
Questions:
1. When I launch File Explorer (the one within the rom) SD-EXT on root is empty, no folders or anything, but if I launch terminal emulator and cd sd-ext then ls there they are. Why?
2. I play couple of memory intensive games (like Dead Space and GTA3), but since I have only 256 mb ram they often crash (without error) when loading a level or saved game (yes I have chainfire3D). Will moving dalvik cache and cache to sd-ext help free more ram so I can crash less?
3. What is the point of moving dalvik and cache to sd-ext and where can I find a guide how to do it?
Thanks.

Thanks.

1) The File Manager bundled with CM7 doesn't have ROOT access, which is required to read the files on /sd-ext. Try using Root Explorer, for example.
2) No, it won't. What will probably help you is to disable JIT (gives you more free RAM), install V6 Supercharger by zeppelinrox (reorganizes how RAM is used) and remove ChainFire3D (it only helps if you reduce the texture quality to 16-bits, otherwise it's just one more layer between your apps and the GPU).
3) The point of using sd-ext is to overcome the storage limitations of the Milestone (not its RAM limitations), allowing you to install more apps without using app2sd (which renders apps on the SD unusable when you plug the device to a computer).
I hope it helps (=
Disabling surface dithering also helps.
I tried 7.2.0-RC2 without V6 and it works great, plus no more side effects, like Maps "forgetting" pre-cached areas =D
Hi. I followed pontomedon's guide to partition my 8GB card with OpenRecovery (parted & tune2fs). So I got 1 GB ext3. And installed CyanogenMod 7.2.2.
But in the CM Settings "Use internal storage" is grayed out and says "This device doesn't have expanded internal storage". Has something gone wrong? What's the best way to confirm that SD ext is working?
If ext would work, would the phone's memory still be used fully first, and SD ext only after that, or how does it go? I've now set Install location to "Internal".
I've heard of S2E (simple2ext) app, maybe I'll try it next.

Your storage as in FAT partition on sdcard is working?
You can "mount | grep sd-ext" and "df /sd-ext" to check if sd-ext is mounted and how much space it has.
sd-ext is treated as internal memory. All user installed apps are moved to ext partition. Internal storage (data) is used for app data (configuration, etc.)
Thanks. Why does it show it as ext4. 8% is used... I guess it's working after all. Now let's install some games!
/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /sd-ext type ext4 (rw,noatime,nodiratime,barrier=1,data=ordered)
Filesystem /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 1K-blocks 936666 Used 70298 Available 816397 Use% 8% Mounted on /sd-ext
I installed Root Browser Lite and it shows the installed apps in sd-ext, also Dalvik-cache for those apps is there, which is good I think.
how to format?

Hi, my question is very close to this topic : when I try to install another rom I got all the old applications coming from the previous install. Is there a way to format the ext 2 in the same time we update or change CM?
Thx
Use -FuFu-'s MiniMod Recovery - it has an extended wipe menu, including ext-wipe.

With 2ndbootOR you can use "wipe_ext2.sh" from MiniMod by -FuFu, or any other script. Just copy file to "scripts" folder.
FuFu's latest OR is based on the 2ndbootOR, so it does everything the 2ndbootOR does, but it also has additional scripts. So it really worth a try.
Thx I'll update my second phone (I have not seen these answers before)

afaik
Unofficial ( this with orginal layout)
Have /system /cache & /datadata partitions on 460mb onenand chip, whats in overal meaning your /datadata partition cannot be bigger than 200-250 mb , cause of required space for /system
in offcial cm10 ther is modded partition layout which moves /system partition on the chip of /data which is much bigger..
so /datadata pratition can be hudge (~450mb ) at cost of some really unused speca of /data
And that's why i'm having some problem regarding my installed app on sd?When i moved my app on internal sd the icon show up as android robot icon.Is there a way to fix this..?

Propably, because swiching partition layouts is quite invasible, and may corupt data. Thats why there was in istalation instructions to do a backup.
And then wipe (making clean instalation), nextly if this was titanium or sth like this you can easly restore it..
Now you can try rebot recovery > fix permissions (may work, may not)
Sec way not tested: download the .apk file of app you want to fix from anywhere, then using root explorer can be even es file explorer, then copy dowloaded app with correct name same as is currently on data partition, and now overite corupted one by this wat you dowloaded (more complicated but easy anyway, and amy work for you
Thanks man,But sorry..Me still noob here.Cant get the mean,Still don't understand why should it have the partition for this even tho the galaxy s got internal sd worth 13gb.Don't tell me that when i downloaded some app and it will install it in phone memory?and if the phone memory were less when i moved it to internal sd i will get these error?was it?
unofficial have 1.8G for data (apps), and no /datadata because if you have fast inand ship you dont need it
official have 1.4G /data (apps) and /datadata 460mb , this is good for old slow movinand ship

Thanks bro,But what is /datadata?what does it do..?what is inand?
Here i have attach the screenshot that shows error where some app that i have installed in internal sd got this error.See pic below please. How do i fix this..?:crying:
/datadata is placed on the fast onenand ship of sgs (because movinand is slow), so that makes your apps run smoother
however because inand is fast , there is no need for this partition, hense all the 1.8g is used for data (apps)

/datatata partition is place wheres apps stores their data ( settings, game progres, sms's etc)
so if you are doing sth with system or partition layout, data can be corupted,
inand is kind of flash drive in sgs it is usualy 8gb chip and 512mb onenand chip
