Well its not completely impossible, you can make a nanroid on each rom you have and restore it to get the rom back, along with all of your apps.
Whats the process.. could you tell me step by step
U have desire rom installed... boot into recovery. Nandroid backup, remember the date/timestamp.. wipe. install CM mod use it for however long you want. when you want to switch back to desire, boot into recovery. Backup CM mod.. Wipe, Restore Desire backup. the switching process will be several minutes every time. I also recommend doing a little nandroid cleanup every so often and delete old backups in the nandroid folder on your SD card. I tried this for about a day before just sticking with stock look and CM mod.. not a fan of sense ui and Flash Lite is pretty Terribad anyways.
Thanks Sir. I have another problem now.. I didn't want to make a new thread.
I backed up all my contacts before doing anything by going to export to SD. Saved it as a v. card file
But when I import after the MOD, i only see contacts with emails, when I go to show only contacts with phone numbers it only shows me 5 people?
Even stranger, when I open in outlook, It shows only 1 contact!
But when i right click the file, and open in notepad and do a search i see all my contacts..
I'm confused, I dont wanna enter all my contacts by hand. Help?
Your contacts should automatically be restored..if your signed into Google account that is.
contacts > display options > your google account ... open it and make sure you got all the sub groups checked.
... I got tricked once. Maybe this is your issue ?

Hi all,
Ok, ive looked around and have found not much on this to help me, so if this is a repeat problem in anyway please let me know, I will happily read something to work it out myself.
But, essentially I have two backup questions. I need/want to re-flash my Wizard (o2 XDA MiniS) which is currently on the RUU_Prodigy_2170702_21707102_20710_QTEK_WWE_Ship.exe rom. Since going to this ROM I am unable to send/receive MMS messages of any kind. I am informed there is one for me to download, but when I try it fails. o2 have given me the instructions to add their server into my MMS configuration but it doesnt work. So as im not sure what the problem is, I thought id re-flash the rom with a newer one and worry about it after then. (If anyone knows a fix for this, let me know pls!!!) Anway I still would like to know how...
1) I have lots of text messages I do not want to lose. Is there a way I can back them up so when I flash with another rom, I can put them back on my device? I do have a storage card if that helps.
2) Can I use a backup program such as...
- Pocket Backup Plus 2.1.2
- Sprite Backup Premium v3.1.4.2419
- Sunnysoft.Backup.Manager.v3.3.Build.03141
That I could use to take a snapshot image of my phone, so I can restore the "image" if using a new rom messes things up?
Thanks for any replies!!!

Sprite Backup 3.1.4 is NOT WM5-compilant. Don't have the time to check the exact build number of the other two. Read my Backup Bible here at XDA-Dev, it'll answer your q's (and I, again, recommend that you follow my articles as this article can also be found in the local forum): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=278037
Cheers dude thats awesome. Nice one!
You need Sprite Backup 5.1 for PPC, before you upgrade your ROM read the FAQ first,
https://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/...earch=Search&area=0&criteria=0&sort=0&start=0
then follow it step by step to restore to your new ROM
I have looked into a few threads and found some information but nothing to answer my questions
when installing a new ROM will i be able to save my current ROM + settings + porgrams in order to revert back to at a later point in case the newer Rom I dislike?
also
Installing a ROM will probably delete my o2 Service settings how will i go about getting them all back/setting my phone up again?
Any help on these 2 questions will help greatly especially from o2 users who have changed ROMs
search for UC-user customization i believe

u can make a backup of your rom, then flash a new one and if u dont like it, u can flash back to your first rom and restore the backup.
What u mean by servise settings? Like provider settings for mms, internet, ....? If so, then almost every rom has app called connection setup that will automatically detect your provider and setup your settings.
lol i was about to post the same question as well. now that i know this i have one question, would it be better to get a start a new rom when i get a microsd memory or is it enough with the phone memory?

the rom is stored in phone memory, but when u want to install new apps, its better to install them to sd.

More info on the back up side of things would be great.. i have found some old thread on dumping.. but at the time of writing there was no way to compile the parts of the dump and re flash the ROM
Is there an easy way to do this now?

As Aslways there is no Flaming, name calling or the such.
No question is too noobish, But please look for your answer first.
Now for the info needed to help. In your post make sure to included the version of the rom you are using, modem, kernel, ext...
Also please give it some time for your question to be answered.
Thank you for setting up this thread.
I would like to add selected AT&T bloat to my Cognition 3.04 install, specifically the AT&T Hot Spots app. Without this app, I have to manually launch the browser and connect whenever I want to use WIFI at my work.
DesignGears used to have APKs for each bloat item on his Cognition page, but it seems the page does not exist. Where would I go to get this app, along with other selected bloat?
How do you stop cognition from force closing when you try to open the messaging app. I think I am restoring the wrong things on titanium backup

I've had no problems using mine with Cog 3.04
Are you using FB kernel?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Nevermind, fixed it
This won't work...
Here is a quick Rundown
I897 ROM (Cognition) + Stock Kernel + I897 MOdem (Stock = JL1) = BLUETOOTH WORKING (no static)
If you change the Kernel and modem to Firebird and JK4 this breaks the combination and you end up getting static. The Firebird Kernel is based off the i9000 source.
IF you want to use the Firebird Kernel, I suggestng switching to Perception which uses the i9000 source.
*This is my understanding of how this works...if I am wrong please correct me*

I have the same setup cog.3.04 FB2 ver 1.0 and JK4 modem, I used SGS kernel flasher to back up stock cog. kernel. I will flash back to stock kernel and JJ4 modem when I want to use bluetooth then flash back to FB2 and JK4 modem when I want to use Voodoo control for sound. This is all done without loosing data or any of your setup.

I do not use bluetooth for anything other than file transfers. As far as I know, Firebird does not allow for bluetooth dialing or voice.
Newbie: tell me prepare steps before flashing
Please tell me the steps I should do to a pure stock ATT Captivate before flashing Cog ROM (will probably wait for v4 which apparently DG is working on now).
I don't need (right now) the how-to-do-each step, just what to do. May have to ask later for some of the details, but I =think= I know most of the process, just have never done it yet. What I am still not clear on is the "for your safety" (e.g. backups other than Tibu), the "it's a good idea", and the "just in case" to do's.
I would like to end up after flash with all the apps I have now (except ATT bloat). Please include the apps I will need before the flash process and any that would need to be there afterward.
Oh, on ATT apps--I do use the ATT Address book at
Contacts >menu>more>Settings>ATT Address book
because the gmail sync WILL NOT send phone contacts to gmail--only the other way from gmail to phone. So, would like to keep that for backup in case of phone theft/lost. Possible?
Thanks.

Skip Step 1
Thanks, however, other than doing the root on a stock phone, that is not the BEFORE things--it is the flashing process. I was asking for things desirable to do before starting all of that (well maybe after rooting, but before the flashings).
Examples (made up)..."you should use ____ and manually copy ____ from _____ to ______." You should get ____ app and run it; copy the ____numbers from the screen and save them, or move the file it created at_____ to____.
Maybe there is nothing else that should be done, but I am sure somewhere I read something about that last part (saving some number out of the original setup).
I am trying to avoid any possibility of ending up saying, "Dang, I wish I had _____."

Other than backing up your user apps and the data related to them, there is not much else to do other than root your phone and flash the ROM. Afterwards you can restore user apps and data (but not system data) and flash a separate kernel and/or modem if you like, nut it is not generally necessary to do so. As long as the ROM you are flashing is for the phone you are flashing it on, there should not be any problems.

Hi,
Is there anyway to make the menu from right to left, right the stock ROM?
also arrange the programs in date installed?
Because I didn't find them in this ROM, and I guess it should be a way to do that?
Thanks

Once you switch to a custom ROM you will no longer be able to use ATT Phone Book... I learned this the hard way. Besides... ATT Phone book SUCKS!!! With the new ROMs... Google will sync your contacts better than ATT ever did but since you've already used ATT here' is what you'll have to do to save your contacts.
1. Go into your Contacts on the phone and click on the Menu Soft Key on the phone.
2. Look for an Import/Export feature and click on it.
3. Now Export your contacts to the SD Card. It will name the file something like: 00001.vcf
4. Now either use Drop Box or connect your phone to PC and save the file.
5. Login to Gmail and use the import feature. Click on it and look for the file you just saved and select it. Gmail should now have all your Contacts.
6. Now you are ready to do whatever you want with your phone with no fear in ever losing your contacts,
7. That I'm aware off... once you use a Custom ROM Froyo and above Gmail will sync both ways. You'll just need to select in on the sync and contact menu.
8. From the home screen... click on the Menu Soft Key and go into settings. Look for "Accounts and sync" and click on it. Add your Google account and allow it to "Auto Sync" and "Background data."
9. Now go back to your Contacts and once again go into the Menu Mode. Click on "More" down arrow and click on "Settings".
10. In there you should see a "Save New Contacts to" Click on it and choose Google.
11. Your all done... from now on your phone will keep your Contacts in sync with Google Account even when you add a new one on the phone.
Note: In "Display options" under the Contact Menu... I have mine to only show Contacts on my phone with Phone Numbers only and to only show Contacts from Google. This avoids Repeats or a crap load of email only contacts being shown on my Phone list.
Hope this helps you or anyone else not wanting to lose there Contacts... I had to learn the hard way the first time when I found out ATT sync wouldn't work anymore. It Sucks anyways in comparison to Google Sync since ATT doesn't even allow you to export Contacts from there site.
Thanks you very much for that--very clearly expressed and complete.
Agree the ATT sync is not great, but since Google sync was not taking them, I had to save them somewhere....thus the ATT.
Hmmmm....on Item 4 about Dropbox: I guess I don't know how to make the mobile version work.
I put the vcf file into a folder I made called "nonpublic." It shows on the phone, but is not appearing in the Dropbox account either online or on my laptop.
I don't see a sync button or anything in the menu button, so how do you get things in dropbox folders on the phone to sync to the other places?
LATER: Installed OI File Manager (recommended in a Dropbox document I found) and was able to make it work. In Dropbox on the phone, you have to use menu and command an upload ("Any file"), then it lets you start your file manager, you drill to the file, and upload it into dropbox server; then it syncs. A bit complicated and not immediately obvious--but it is quite a useful capability.
So. Question. Nobody (to my knowledge) has made a one-click-flash-Cognition-to-your-phone-nice-neat-package deal yet...right? I mean, I've been looking at these forums for a while out of curiosity, and I [think] I can handle it through the various methods, but I do feel comfortable with everything settled in one click (or as few clicks and presses as needed). Maybe I'm just scared of unleashing the true potential. IDK. Thoughts? Redirections? Beatings?
I have a g1 that I rooted using universal androot, I decided to uninstall myfaves and was unaware that it somehow affected contacts. Afterward I performed a restore to my phone, thinking it was going to help but now I'm stuck in the google welcome screen and the welcome app crashes every time it gets to sync and I cannot get past the welcome screen. I know it was a stupid thing to do, if anyone can help me I would appreciate it.
Can you go into Recovery mode?
Yeah, I can get into recovery mode. I also used the hard reset (alt + w), the sign in still crashes once it starts synching.
Try to restore nandroid

lol if you have a custom rom in and you remove an important app, doing a hard reset wont restore a custom rom... you have to either restore a nandroid/BART backup file (which means you needed to make the backup before you messed up the custom rom) or you need to re-flash the rom completely... which there are many guides and methods here on xda you can follow to properly flash roms, basic method is boot recovery, wipe data, cache, sd ext, etc..... than repair sd ext!!! than flash new rom.
Be sure you have the proper requirements needed for Rom! ex:
Radio=1.2.xxxxxx/2.22.xxxxx (many different ones)
hboot=0.95.xxx/1.3.xxxx (many different ones)
sdext=2,3 or 4 (some require none)
I will try it out, thank you.

another method to try (not garenteed) would be to unzip the rom on your pc, go to system/app folder and copy the fav5.apk file to root of sd card on your device. than go to market and download 'oi file manager' (or any type of file manager app) than flash the fav5.apk file that way.... make sure unknown sources is checked in settings/applications on device
Awesome thanks
Got it working!

Hi to all,
I really hope this isn't a re-post, I've searched a lot and the web but with no results.
Is there a method to make a FULL backup (contacts, mails, sms, apps etc..) before flashing a custom Rom on my HD7?
I've seen some apps that can backup the .xap of the Phone but no one talk about the list of personal contacts and all personal data/files in the Phone!
I'm searching for something to restore my HD7 exactly as before the flash (I don't want to re-save all my telephone numbers, they are tooooo much... )
Any solution?
Thank you very much!
PS: XDA forum is the best!
To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a way to restore everything back to your phone. You can sync through Gmail, Live, Outlook, etc. to store email, contact phones, etc, but backing up sms and mms is not yet a possibility.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong though. Sorry I don't have a better answer.
backup contacts: u use hotmail or gmail to sync with your phone.
backup apps: U've seen some apps that can backup the .xap of the Phone:OK
backup other(sms...): Your phone must update to mango from zune (not use custom rom) and use app in attachment or you can search on forum.
