My version is Opera 9.7, i have Cuetfiss 2.7 Extreme Rom, but i have already this problem with other rom...

This is related to the localization. Opera isn't configured for each type of HW keyboard. Most opera 10 versions work fine, but even there some don't. There's a localization patch for Opera 10 if it doesn't work - I can't say for sure if it exists for 9.7. Easiest fix in my opinion is just to install a ROM that has this issue sorted, can save a lot of trouble.

Opera 9.7 has never officially been released. The version you got was preinstalled on some HTC devices without hardware keyboards and therefore does not support it. As far as I know there is no way to fix this. Use Opera Mobile 9.5, Opera Mobile 10 or Opera Mini instead.

Why Opera?

I have Opera on my Kaiser. 26 days to go for free.
But I have problems being motivated to buy the version.
Anybody an opinion?
Have no problems with IE till now. But maybe I am missing some important features.
Huib
Have you tried "Opera Mini" ?
If not, try it, you will never go back to IE
It is super fast, very compact, and works, also with that neat zoom/unzoom!.
Again, the browsing and rendering speed of Opera Mini is superb.
Drag and scroll.
Highlight and copy text
Save images
Successfully renders web pages more frequently than does the IE - IMHO

Try scrolling down a long page with PIE and you will know why Opera Mini is better. PIE almost grinds to a halt after the first screen or two has scrolled up.
EDIT: Update to above entry. PIE now has a fix for scrolling issue - downloadable here: IE Slow Scroll Fix for Kaiser_Tilt.cab

Gotcha!
Tested them both with a longer page and the difference is clear.
Thanks for your input.

Hi!
can Opera-mini and other apps be run from the memory card satisfactorily?
i.e are they slower?
I wonder if my other applications such as Resco Explorer 2007 and Code Wallter can be run from the card too?
Ofiaich
Don't take what I say as gospel but when I had Opera installed on the SD card it didn't function completely correct - like didn't follow email links correctly along with a couple of other glitches etc.
Likewise I have always been a bit hesitant to install things that operate so cloely with the OS, like Resco Explorer, to the card. They have always seemd to work much better on the main memory. Just my opinion.
Thus I have Opera mini and Resco Explorer installed on the main memory while just about everything else I have on the SD card.
jcrompton!
Thanks very much! Sounds good to me, and I have space in the main memory!
I will get on and download Opera mini !

Opera Can Handle Regular Youtube!
Please Dont quote me on this, but if i am correct, Opera (paid version, not mini) can render many types of complicated flash websites including Youtube(Yes the regular one not youtube mobile). I say this because i tested it for myself, a while ago on my mda vario or vario 2 (sorry cant remember). What seemed to be a slight problem though was, it ran out of memory frequently (ram) and as such the program would not start if other applications were running in the background.
Opera users on WM6, your reviews and thoughts on this are much appreciated!

OK - so I just figured out how to get Opera Mini work via the Java app under programs -- have you been able to get email links and other http links to automatically be opened by Opera Mini - I made some registry changes to get Opera Mobile to be the default browser, can you get Opera Mini to do that ? (wasn't sure since it is buried as a Java program)

Well you asked for it. I am going to have to quote you. Youtube does not work on my 8925 in Opera, neither the moble specific version (says media file type not supported) nor the full youtube site. Ugh.
I agree that you wouldn't really want to use Opera Mini on the Kaiser....Opera Mobile though is the bomb! I just wish it was free like the Mini version is, but it's good enough to pay for anyway. PIE just is not very good at rendering most webpages.
opera is very good browser but the built in pie some times show websites better than opera example http:\\www.xda-developers.com

Official Beta 1 Opera Mobile 9.5 build 1706

Sorry peoples, i had to remove the download link after finding this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401643
Great! Just installed, but found a bug. When I click on a box for input, ie login, password my keyboard switches to the default keyboard instead of my Diamond keyboard. Anybody else running into this?

Yes. But you can switch back to the Diamond Keyboard. But it does that switch everytime you click on a new form.
Although fortunately, the slide-out keyboard now works without issue. So I use that instead of the Diamond keyboard.
does anyone out there even know if there's a place where you can give feedback as far as the progress and other issues w/ some of the opera 9.5 builds? i've run into quite a few things that they need to fix, but going from build 1184 to this is honestly not an improvement at all (prettier skin...thats it)
there doesn't seem to be a place on their forums where you can just talk about problems w/ the browser like you can on the skyfire forums. i could always submit some of the problems as bugs, but they're not really that...looking for a spot for input.

Ok, is there any reason why i can't seem to connect to logmein web page using opera or ie?
yea...they should've made one browser..ie and opera together...havin problems with opera on my mobile too...everytime i rotate the screen to landscape mode...it minimizes:/...neone know a fix?n where can i download the latest version of opera?mayb updatin it will fix the problem...
I'm not sure if there is an update. I believe we already have Opera Mobile 9.5 (beta), which Opera lists as the current one.
But, if you don't care for the default Opera interface, perhaps you should try Opera Mini?
http://www.opera.com/mini/
For info on the differences between Mobile and Mini:
http://www.opera.com/products/choose/
I have to admit that i find Opera Mobile a hassle sometimes. Adding that the data-charges on my subscription is quite substantial I often use opera mini, wich really is getting good these days.
Still looking for the answer. I really liked Opera on previous devices, but really don't care for it on the Diamond. I don't care for the UI, or lack thereof, and the Favorites is a mess. Zooming and panning is a nice feature, but having to constantly adjust to get a decently rendered page is a pain. PIE is much better for me on the Diamond. Better/familiar user controls and better rendering.
I do have IE on a soft key, but programs that auto switch to the browser still call Opera as the default. Opera also eats a big chunk of phone memory. I have tried the 9.5 Beta and it's some better, but not much and does not delete the existing Opera.
So back to the original question...anybody know how to uninstall Opera and change the System defaults to PIE?
Thanks

Opera 9.5 Hardware Keyboard Issue [cooks PLEASE read]

Dear Cooks,
Firstly I would like to thank all of you for the fantastic ROMs you make available to all the Xperia users. I personally appreciate your work and have also made some donations to express my support for your endeavours.
This post is to signal a bug that is present in many roms, yet it is not the fault of the cooks.
THE PROBLEM
Opera 9.5 has issues with the hardware keyboard of the Xperia. In most builds opera 9.5 will not allow the use of the HW keyboard to type text in the web pages (i.e. keyboard works to write in the opera address bars; however it does not work to type in the web page itself: like in google home page, or in the home page of Airlines when you need to write the details of your destination etc. etc.).
This problem is particularly bad beacuse Opera is very often cooked in the Rom ad the default browser and is associated to the TF3D internet tab. Under these circumstances Opera cannot be uninstalled and substituted with a working version; moreover installing a working version on top of the non working one produces many bugs.
A HUMBLE SUGGESTION
Plesase, when cooking your roms could you try implementing one of the Opera 9.5 builds that are proven to be compatible with the HW keyboard of the Xperia? For one, I know that build 15969 works.
Link: http://rapidshare.com/files/210069981/WM6.1_PPC_dawn_Opera_15969_signed.cab
[Props to Ds07 for the link]
It is not the most recent version, I know. However it works well enough.
Thank you very much.
P.S. If anyone is aware of other possible solutions to this issue, please feel free to contribute to this thread.
maybe make a poll and see what ppl want......rhodium opera vs x1 opera
x1 opera will enable hardware keyboard and reduce ram usage as it does not run in background.
but it will also mean that opera will boot slower AND pushinternet wont work!
@agent_47
I see your point.
However, having the HW keyboard disabled on my default browser appears like a rather big problem when compared to little benefit that "pushinternet" brings.
Moreover, if I am not mistaken, Pushinternet is a Manila feature only. While Opera versions with non functioning HW Keyboard are found in ALL roms.
I agree, this makes the whole HW-keyboard useless as I mostly use it in Opera. I just flashed EnergyRom and this is really annoying
i cant understand the discussion? why not just install an opera build over the preinstalled build then it will work, i dont see an big issue in it.
My oscar goes to the hardware keyboard version..
I find the Push Internet version is just a waste of space in ROM, as i don't need it and it is definetly < HW keyboard support!
That's why i bought an Xperia.. Because of its keyboard!

This is a VERY inefficient solution. For example in the current NRG rom installing an opera build that works with HW keyboard over the preinstalled one renders Opera unusable. When that happens, you have the default browser that is associated with numerous file extensions that won't work anymore.
Moreover, if you try installing 9.7 on top of the preinstalled Opera, it simply won't work.
I have investigated this quite a bit; it's a topic that has come up for many other devices. Removing a specific opera build to replace it with another one is very hard when opera is originally cooked in the Rom.
For me, being unable to use the HW keyboard in the default browser is a rather big issue.
I agree with having the version that includes keyboard support.
For what it's worth even Opera 9.7b1 supports out keyboard better, even though there is no push support... push....hm, anyone here remember the PointCast network and client...
Agent 47's latest ROMs have been the best all around versions I've used so far (giving credit and thanks to the entire cookin' devs however)... with the exception of the Opera niggle...
I end up using the Iris browser, to avoid having multiple Opera versions running

Push Internet MUST use that particular Opera to work. I like the PushInternet idea once, but finally give it up and use stock Opera instead because it preloading single page w/o sub sequence links is pretty useless to the whole browsing experience.
That's why I leave Opera alone and let user install whatever version they like.
I believe some interesting elements are emerging:
1) Non Manila ROMs are probably better off with Opera 15969 or any Opera build that supports HW keyboard
2) Manila ROMs have the issue of PushInternet.
Personally, considering the limited benefits of this function and the highcost in terms of RAM....I would definitely prefer having a version of Opera that supports HW keyboard.
I guess it will come down to what the cooks prefer.
However, it would be nice if cooks and users alike continued expressing their opinion on the matter.

i totally agree with u...pushinternet IS pretty useless...BUT when i installed opera 9.7 and let out Push internet, some one reported a bug that he cant use it even when he activates it from registry and manilla
this also bugs me. pretty every ROM i try has this issue. surfing the web is pretty pointless imho if u cant search for anything. i mean ... the only reason we all bought this phone was the keyboard and then we cant use it. this makes most custom rom's somehwat useless to me (for me ... dont start any flaming cause thats my opinion. and opinions are like assholes. every1 has one ^^).
yes yes yes..!! this is the post.. u r da man!!
i would really dissapointed to see my opera is still couldnt use hardware ky..!!
i tried opera 9.7 b1 with hardware keyboard.. it works well.. disable the push web straight away.. haha
I bought my X1 because of the decent HW keyboard, not because of Push Internet
You can flash roms without Opera, like me. I've installed my stock 15431 Opera from russian r3a007 over 3.61 BareBone ant I haven't any problems with it.
And I think 3.61 BB rom is one of the best working roms out there.
sorry, doublepost
this IS the holy grail thread for a majority of x1 opera users...
i just posted in agent_47's thread about this being one of the outstanding issues i'm experiencing with his rom, and someone actually has the decency to make it into a brand new thread. But yea, I thought this issue was 'isolated' and that other rom cookers were using the default r3a opera /w full hw kb support on theirs and i preferred the valkyrie so i just wanted to swop out the opera running on it...
turns out every romcooker is doing the same. I daresay the first cook that puts in a fully functional opera is gonna nab the most popularity. What i don't understand, as romcooks and xperia x1 users, how did you guys manage to live with using the measly software kb to use opera!? ?

That's a bit exaggerated... there have always been good and popular ROMs around with proper HW keyboard support.
It's just that most of us here are "freaks": Easily hyped with new functions and higher version numbers (even if there's no real benefit) - and less interested in 100% stability and usability.
But there are always ROMs around which offer less bling-bling-featuritis - they are just not on forum page 1. The choice is up to yourself.
well yea i guess everyone would wanna go for the bling and the functionality.
there are probably a 100 other romcookers out there, but i guess my statement was targetted towards the more popular ones that people actually use .
This is the first time Im doing a post on xda dwvelopers. And it is bacause I would realy like to know whenever someome finds a solution for enabling hw keyboard to woerk with Opera browswrs that comes with coocked ROMs.., Sorry for the typing mistakes but my hw keyboard is not working.

help. i want to set opera mini as my main browser.

i searched some threads but havent found anything.
does somebody know how to do it?
want to sync for example the push pages on tf3d that they will open with opera mini...
Ive often wondered if this is possible. I always assumed it wasnt as its a program within a program ie, you open the java program the you open opera mini. I remember seeing some code somewhere once so you can just click on one icon and it opens up both java then opera in one fell swoop. Im just about to go to work so i dont have time to search for it...

I'm afraid it is not possible.
alright, would have been nice, but its not a big thing.
i'll start it the old fashioned way with the icon in the programs-tab.
wooooooowww, opera mini 5 is the god browser, when it got finished and take back the download manager(`cause every time you try a download it redirect you to i.e) it will be perfect, loving it, much more than i.e and opera...
i wish setting opera mini as defaut is really possible...
