I currently have an older version of the CM ROM. There are some bugs, etc. and I figure I should probably update it.
Sorry if this somewhat of a noob question (I'm mainly a winmo guy, first android device)...what is the situation when upgrading - do I have to do a complete wipe and would I have to reinstall all my apps? Or is there a simple way to do this all quicker?
Wipe if you are having issues or coming from a different rom. If this is not happening then you should just be able to flash the update.
Lots of people speak very highly of titanium backup
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-keramidas-titaniumbackup-xCzz.aspx
or grab it from the market
Just found this - http://www.cyanogenmod.com/downloads/cm-updater
seems very nice, giving it a try now for an update.

Hi all,
I've been a long long time rooter of phones. The Nexus 6 was no different. I'm running Temasek's CM12 rom and it's been great, but I'd like to go back to stock and run the Marshmallow rom unrooted. It seems like with Doze and other features it would be better for me at this time.
I have the ATT version of the Nexus 6 and the latest TWRP installed. What would I need to do to install the latest stock 6.0 rom (safely?). Im a technical person but rather than throw things at the wall and see what sticks, I'm looking for a couple of testimonials to make me feel better about doing this
Thanks!
Flashing the factory images from Google is likely your best bet. You can flash everything separately, skipping the userdata image if you don't want to format your data partition, and skip the recovery image if you want to keep TWRP. I am sure there are guides on site to assist with this if you aren't sure how to accomplish this.
You will likely have to factory reset in TWRP as going from CM > stock will likely cause some problems. Also, if you have disabled encryption and want to stay that way, you will want to flash a custom kernel that removes the force encryption before booting into Android.
I am new to my Nexus 6 and new to flashing custom roms. I have read the thread all morning long and still don't feel comfortable with what information I have obtained. I'm currently running marshmallow 6.0 rooted with supersu 2.52. How can I flash the latest pure Nexus project 6.0.1 correctly? I do have TWRP recovery installed and I'm running on build number MRA58R
Make a backup in TWRP, wipe your system partition, Flash the ROM zip and the GAPPS zip, reboot, profit. If anything fails you can roll back to your backup and try again.
Real simple. Download the latest built as well as the latest google apps (gapps)
Reboot to TWRP
Do a backup, so you have a restore point if something happens
Go to wipe->advanced wipe and choose both caches, system and data. DO NOT wipe internal storage
Go to install, choose the ROM and gapps and install them
Reboot
You will now be on the latest. You will have to set your phone up again, and all your text messages, home screen, act will be gone but all your stuff on your sdcard (internal storage) will be untouched.
You can also get real ambitious and make backups with something like titanium backup of all your apps and data and restore it after booting PN, but try to not back up system apps or system data (it should be an option... I dont know, I never use tibu). The main thing you lose without backing up is texts, I usually just deal with it/redownload apps/set up home screen again.
On future updates, unless there are major changes and its indicated by a majority of people in the PN thread, just dirty flash.
That is, backup, wipe caches, install new ROM version( I wouldn't reflash gapps ) this will leave all your apps, settings, ect... But should only be done when flashing the same or a very similar ROM. If you dirty flash and experience problems, go back and clean flash as I first instructed.
So I should not worry about flashing the new 32r radio?
shouldnt this have been one of the first things to learn BEFORE you ever rooted your phone? yea, nice job jumping in before learning your way around. i bet you even used a toolkit to root your device..
Everyone's got to start somewhere. And no toolkit here but thanks for your input! And thank you for the helpful responses.

no tool kit? ok, your -1 on not learning before rooting has a +1 right by it, for rooting the proper way. you just might earn some respect
Hey there simbo, what do you say about flashing the radio?
Sure. Or don't.
Whatever.
The radio is pretty separate from android. Its basically drivers to tell you phone how to use hardware.
FI has certain requirements for activation that may check what radio you have, but outside of that run what ever works good for you., its not going to for sure be any specific one. Newer may often be better but its not uncommon that an older one may work a little better.
Different apps can help you monitor (I dunno which ones... But I know its a thing ), you can also go into about phone -> status -> sim status and check signal strength where lower dBm is better(well a lower numeric value... Its technically a negative number, so higher is better i.e. -113 is worse then -104). This will vary slightly minute to minute and place to place so just taking a glance once won't really settle it for you
I just use it for a day or two, pay attention to how my signal is (just kinda how often did I have decent # of bars, nothing scientific), and check battery stats clicking on cell standby and looking at % of time with out signal.

youre choice. you can try any of the radios, from previous android versions, on any android version. they arent specific. im using the 27R radio. whichever one works best for you, thats whats important

Well, it's all very easy if you read a little. Still i will give you one extra tip in case you start flashing all kinds of roms: You unlocked your bootloader. Before doing that you enabled "OEM unlocking" in 'Developer options'. Leave that enabled (this setting is 'sticky'. even when you wipe the device)!!!!. Leaving OEM unlocking enabled will disable "Device Protection" that causes sometimes a 72 hours lock-out from your Google account.
Hello i am a person who hates to do things like backup apps just so I can reinstall them after wiping them just for a new version.
But as I need to upgrade and didnt touch rom wizardry for a while I am looking for help.
My idea is to get
from my current prerooted stock 4.4
TO
prerooted stock 5 or 6
so i do not have to wipe hopefully(ev rom change)
.
how would I do that exactly?
Exact info in image I got the rom from this forum.

Thanks for your time. I hope this is possible. Ohby the way I need to do this because AIDE app does not work on sony phones with android 4 any longer it seems. At leastthats what many people reported and I would like to use it as I always get a stupid aapt theme resource error in building my apps. even tried changing theme to holo did not help..
If maybe you have a workaround for that would be even neater because I like android 4.4 more anyway.
That's what I did. 4.4 -> 6.0.1 without wiping internal memory factory reset after, just flashing the rom and twrp recovery. It's recommended to take the trouble to backup & start fresh, but no problems here.
Helium was handy to backup some stuff.
I followed the thread titled: Recovery & Root for MM .575 & .291 LB
..using a crappy old desktop with linux on a usb stick. I did flash Su for root then xposed, for all the good things like adaway, afwall+, titaniumbackup, pmp, sdfix, sdmaid..
Marshmallow is pretty damn slick, its worth it, take your time.
Hi thanks for your answer. I found a prerooted stockfirmware with 6.0 from the same guy i had prerooted 4.4. And no errors whatsoever.
but i noticed some lags here and there whereas in 4.4 everything seemed more smooth. In marshmallow now it feels like sometimes it freezes for half a second. very weird..
Any idea how to fix that?
ActuallyI had 6. 0 before downgrading but I liked the 4 more (look, feeling, compatibility) so I downgraded.
They say the lags will go away after some use..
It may be with not starting afresh (I didn't notice any problems but its highly recommended to), it may be something you have installed or very likely just the new rom 'wearing in'..
I started from stock 23.0.1.A.5.77 to stock 23.5.A.1.291 and applied root, read about the the lags when upgrading and that they go away after some days use as android optimizes (again, no problems here). Try giving it some time and see.
Weird that you talk about AIDE.. was reading about that and Terminal-IDE.
Hi! So, for now I'm running OOS 3.5.4 because I hated the 4.0.1 (I downgraded from it). So, now I don't know if updating to 4.1.1 or getting a ROM. I heard a lot of discordant opinions about the new update of OOS and myself didn't like the first nougat update. If I'll flash ROM, what should I flash(without bugs and with a good camera quality, because seems that all the roms have ****ty camera quality)?
Just my take: Asking for advice about the 4.1.1 update vs. custom ROM (and for that matter which custom ROM) is a matter of personal preference. As you've said yourself, opinions on the update are discordant (as will be true for any update). Just because someone gives your a particular response one way or the other, doesn't mean it will be the right answer for you. The only way to conclusively answer the question for yourself, is to try out the update and/or ROMs.
I would generally recommend updating firmware/modem in any case, whether you decide on the official update or a custom ROM. So it may make sense just to do the update (which will also update firmware and modem) then see if you like it. If not, try a custom ROM.
Alternately, even if you opt to go right to a custom ROM (after unlocking bootloader and flashing TWRP), I'd suggest at least flashing one of the updated firmware/modem zips posted in the 3T Guides, News & Discussion section.

Thank you. I will probably update then, and if I won't like it I'll go to a custom ROM. Could you suggest me any good/stable ROM out there (especially without bugs and with a good camera quality)? Thanks

As I already mentioned, what I said about update vs. custom ROM, will also apply to asking for recommendations about a particular custom ROM. It depends on your personal needs and preferences. You have to make the decision yourself.
Further, I'm still on stock 7.1.1, rooted; and haven't tried any custom ROMs on this device yet. So I have no custom ROM recommendations.

Ok
I updated from 4.0.3 to beta 4 via local, but now I want to go back because of the battery drain problem. I tried several times via adb sideload to flash the zip but I keep getting the same error <cannot read 4.0.4.zip> over and over again. Even after installing the drivers, I got a little yellow exclamation triangle near the driver in device manager. Honestly I'm starting to give up, I think I wiped my phone more than 5 times in order to flash via sideload, only to get the same error continuously. as far as I know, I cannot go back to 4.0.3 via local from beta 4 right?
Please help...
Hello,
I bought a 9T Pro in Europe for my wife and until it arrives I'm trying to research and come up with a low effort process of keeping the stock ROM up to date and rooted for her. I'm confident in manually installing and updating custom ROMs, rooting and dealing with custom ROM issues, but she is not. Therefore I thought the best thing is to use the stock ROM - not custom - since it may be the most stable experience and for me to update and re-root it for her regularly. root is mandatory because we need AdAway and other things. As I understand it, as soon as we unlock and root the phone, OTA updates for stock are impossible and maybe even dangerous. I've tried researching here but am bit struggling to come up with the right infos and I'd be glad for any advice.
Of course I have seen the great thread about unlocking, rooting, etc, but It seems that that deals with non-standard Chinese firmware pre-installed, which is probably not the case on our device. Since it's bought in Europe, I think it will probably come with some Global or EU ROM. And it doesn't answer some of my other questions.
So far my idea is roughly like this:
Phone arrives
Immediately update it via built-in OTA to latest official stock ROM
Unlock, install TWRP, root with Magisk
Use the phone
Whenever a new stock ROM comes out, download it from XDA
Flash new ROM in TWRP and root again with Magisk
Repeat 4-6 as new stock ROM versions are released
Of course regularly backup with Titanium Backup and TWRP
First of all, would this work or did I misunderstand something fundamental?
How does low level firmware / modem update come into play? Would that be included in the stock ROM packages I find here? Or do I need to manually update that separately? How do I know when I have to, since there is no custom ROM maintainer telling me when it's needed?
Is there an easier way of doing this? This process requires me to regularly check for a new stock ROM, then borrow the phone from the wife for some time to backup, update, re-root and so on. Not that convenient but it would work if there is no better way.
Sorry for the long post, but I'd be very thankful for any advice or ideas. I did quite some research, but if all this info is already available and I missed it, my sincere apologies. It's a lot of info about a new device to take in. :silly:

I didn't keep stock MIUI long enough to know definite answers, but from what I remember, this is my understanding.
OTA will still work and shouldn't cause any issues, just that you will lose TWRP and root whenever you do this.
The steps you give are the normal way to update with TWRP and root.
However, OrangeFox recovery (a heavily modified version of TWRP) is often used instead of TWRP in this circumstance. It is built specifically for MIUI devices and with a little bit of work, I believe that it is able to survive OTA updates. Have another dig around for OrangeFox in this forum section and hopefully you'll find details on how to set it up so that you can still take OTA updates.

It seems OrangeFox it's a bit hit and miss.
Also Xiaomi.eu ROMs are another alternative to look into.

Wow, that's a lot of helpful info, thanks a lot for pointing me into these directions. I will definitely look into Xiaomi.eu, I that sounds promising!
Get phone. Apply for unlock. Unlock.
You can use my guide bit.do/raphaelguide
Use orangefox 10.8 use magisk.
You can flash eu ROM. Stable version. From xiaomi.eu
Eu rom installs official twrp after install. You are familiar with that
Once you have eu ROM ( same as stock, better performance, minimal bloat, no ads, no tracking)
Eu ROMs gets OTA, keeps root. This is exactly what you want. Just press update in settings as normal ota. It'll do normal ota update by itself, no titanium, migrate hassle.
Join telegram group if you want or on me for any help.

Amazing, I have taken a look at Xiaomi.eu already and decided to try that. But what you're saying sounds even much better than what I expected. Thank you very much too, I will definitely go that route.
