How to enable browser downloads - *.zip - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I used to use the free version of Astro File manager which had the option to enable browser downloads.
Now that Astro has become a paid app, i wanted to know if there is any other app which can do this for me.
Thanks
Chinmay

astro is not yet a paid app. they have recenly upgraded their version of the software. you can go to the market and upgrade for free. I just updated today.

There is also another app called "Download Crutch", there is a lite version as well, that will allow you to download pretty much any type of file from the browser. They are both free, but I am not sure if they are in the market anymore. A Google search should yield you a copy though...
Works fine on my G1 running latest CM ROM, as well as any other I have tried really...

thanks
download crutch is nt available in the market..
will try to find in on google...
Astro is free for a limited time... later again it becomes a problem...

Market Update For Apps Not Downloaded Through Market

Hey is there any way for an app i installed through adb to show up in my downloads for market so that when an update is available i can do it.
*Plz dont post that why am i not just downloading from market....i made a script so its fast for me to install all my fav apps after a wipe which would be no where as close as finding each app in the market.
Just use atrackdog...
Well but that only tells me the latest version....how would i go about getting it ?
long press on it and select install from market. if its a paid app, you have to install it from market to get the updates.or warez it, but thats a no no
lol no its all free apps...its just i prefer adb cuz its faster...but then the apps dont update themselves..so i was wondering if there was a script or smething for adding apps to the market's my downloads...
another vote for atrackdog. get it, use it.

Prevent Mobile View Browser - Non-Hero

I could not find any information about this in the forums anywhere.
I apologize if it has already been discussed.
My favorite feature in Hero is the browser's ability to prevent websites from showing the mobile view.
I know many sites have a choice for this, but some of them don't.
Has anyone come up with a way to get the stock cupcake browser to fool websites into thinking it is not a mobile browser? Is it even possible?
get loccys browser, it allows you to do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551119&highlight=loccy and much more!
if you cant use adb then just use a file browser such as oi file manager to install, works great!
Thank you for the help.
I have been looking for this forever.
Time to reflash.

It's way easier to install using a file manager than ADB.
Although u can use a fike manager to install apks u cant install system apps like the browser with them. Get SUFBS from the market or get the adb file manager for ur pc. I use the adb manager no need for commands just a few clicks and i can remove and push things at will!
Thanks everyone.
I've already flashed CM 4.0.4 and installed the browser using ADB.
Browser is awesome.
I had this problem to when using cupcake. If you don't have root or want to dal with flashing you can always use a proxy servr also. I used to use youhide.com cuz everytim I went to the ufc website I got the lame mobile site
All I did to install it was download it through my phone browser. Then tap the file in the download manager and installed in seconds.

Again... YES you can. However, it seems only Linda File Manager has the functionality...other file manager's don't. I fooled around with it again today...this time totally removing all browser related files from /system/app, /system/sd/app, and /data/data. I then rebooted and reinstalled Loccy's browser using Linda FM.

I haven't tried downloading it with browser... didn't even think to try it that way. So there are now two ways of doing it on the phone without using terminal or ADB.
I used OI file browser, it worked fine installing the browser!
A lot of system apks can be installed right through linda with no need to push through adb
I always find it easier to use the terminal:
cp /sdcard/blahblah.xxx /system/blah/blah

missing android market

Hi I just upgraded my Rom to the official one from the HTC website and it seems that I am missing the Android market application. Could some one please post a link for that. It is really a pain cuz without the market I can't install any app since there is no file manager either. Help. would be really appreciated. Thanks
if some one could pls backup their android market using astro, and email me the apk link, that would be great! takes 5 mins only.
i backed up my apps using astro before rom upgrade and i managed to get them re installed again. after a long time searching i net, i download and installed the app "slide me"... which is also a catalogue app for android but has the feature for u to install apps of ur sd card.
this is where i had backed up all my apps before rom upgrade. its sad that i didnt back up the android market cuz i assumed that it would come with the rom. my mistake. so if some one could pls?

my friend i had a similar problem , cuz i am in a country that google does not support it .... " forbidden " but i find out y the android is the best by allowing any app to be installed freely
the solution is >>>> go to www.getjar.com and search for Bluetooth ftp
or take this one that i have on my pc get the attachments SAM.zip
and download it . its an app that allow you to browse your phone and send and receive files from other people , to install an app you have to download the apps into your SD card then open it using this pro and the android package installer will start ...
later if you want a a better android browsing pro I recommender The Linda file or Astro file manager
if you want more apps just search the getjar.com
or softonic.com or 4shared.com and you will find any thing you want

How does that help him with the Android Market??
yes, I have the same problem. Could someone please show us how to retrieve the android market.
If you guys used the search you might figure out that this topic has been answered many times already.
Because of misunderstandings between HTC and google was the first non-google branded HTC Adroid mobiles without the market.
The market cannot be backed up using ANY application backup tools. The market require core functionality there isn't in the most sea magics.
You need to wait for an update from HTC there includes the market or flash a rom there got it.

Android market Alternative Slideme

You can install this app market until we get the real one. This is an alternative to Googles. It doesn't have as many apps but it does have lots of popular apps. It installs and works fine.
http://slideme.org/
Its quite good.
Just to clarify. Slideme is not a website where you download apps. it's a Market app. You download the app from their website.
How did you get this working, my NC says "Install Blocked", and then "Installation of download apks is not supported"

installed it... cant get it to even run. screen flashes and it goes back to the app screen. Ideas?
You must have a sd card installed to run slideme.. Most phones only let programs read and write to the sd card, and a lot of programs fail when it can't find one.

Use a file manager like Root explorer. It is a paid app but really great. There are some free ones as well like Astro but I personally don't like how the UI looks.
You can download them to your SD card and install with Astro (free). Browse your SD card with Astro, click on the file and it asks you to either browse or install.
Thanks I meant if you can download the file not install them. I assume that its just not possible and you have to use your computer then.

Does anyone have any input on this? When I browse the forums on my phone and click on an apk, I get an "Unknown - Cannot download. The content is not supported on the phone" message.
Are there any possibilities installing an apk using only the phone?

Download Astro File Manager. Open it up and then use the menu button and go to Preferences. At the bottom of the list you'll see "Enable Browser Downloads". Tick that box and now you can download files in your phone's browser.
Don't uninstall astro, or you won't be able to dl anymore.
I just used Dropbox. Files go in on my PC, and are available on my phone with the Dropbox app.
DB offers 2GB storage for free and, so far, it's worked from all my PC's and works well with my phone. I just open the .apk and install.
umm... same way you download on a computer...
google.com search > "" Some Dumb app pro v9.9 .apk download ""
download. install. duh
use google to rip off google...

There's an app on the market called "Download All Files ". It has allowed me to download several different files that I was not able to before. Downloaded files get put into a folder called "download" on the sd card. Use your file explorer, you can install .apks from there.
