Hi, I hope someone can help me.
I was struggling on why opening a Pocket Excel file became so slow on my X1.
Today I realised the reason why: it opens a network connection and downloads (or uploads) some KB of data.
The same for the other Office Mobile applications.
Does anyone know why and, most important, how to prevent it ?
Thanks in advance.
Solution
It was due to Resco File Explorer: if you map a network drive and flag the option "make available to other applications", when an Office Mobile tool starts it searches for available files also on the network drive.
Unfortunately, if the only available network connection is the GSM, it establishes a GSM connection to search for.
Hoping it helps someone else

All,
I have just received my HTC Diamond (using Vodafone network in NSW, Australia). I will be using it for phone and GPS and possibly also for (Exchange based) email.
I haven’t used Windows Mobile before, and am paranoid that I will (inadvertently) go over the data limit that my employer provides. The limit is only 100MB a month, and if I go over it is something like $1 a MB. I'd rather avoid paying this if possible.
* Is there a way to monitor data usage on Windows Mobile?
* Is there a way to configure email such that it only updates over WiFi or when connected via USB to my home PC (rather than over the mobile towers)? (My email alone would blow me way over 100MB a month)
* Is there a way to disallow any applications from any upload/download over mobile towers without my confirmation?

The program should be installed already, if not check your CD, it's the GPRS monitor if you are using GPRS.
Thanks - I just looked on the CD and found the GPRS monitor.
I then installed the software on the Diamond and set it up with my limit (100MB).
After that I browsed to a website on both Opera and IE. Both worked fine, but when I went back to the monitor nothing had registered (on the Chart or Report tab). Is this normal? Should it appear straight away? Any other explanation (could it have gone over something over than GPRS)?
Interestingly, there is a H at the top of the screen. Page 37 of the manual says this means I have HSDPA available. Does the GPRS monitor also monitor HSDPA?

Makes sure you have checked the date you are viewing the GPRS data, I am not sure how to monitor the HPDPA, I need to monitor that also for 3G, maybe some-one else can help with this?
Check out this free sofware from Modaco.com. You can disable your GPRS/3G data connection (useful when roaming):
http://www.modaco.com/New-FREE-Utility-t246171.html
I worked it out. Page 219 of the manual shows the 'Enable connection monitoring' setting, which I had not enabled. After enabling it - it works fine.
On which CD have you found it? I got that information in the Manual, but I can't find any PPC program on any of the cds (got 2).

can anybody upload this programm?
It is not available on my cd. maybe it depends on the country you live. I live in Switzerland
Its on the same CD as the manual. You run it on the PC and it is automatically downloaded and deployed to the Diamond.
Can you disable the data connection so it is never used?

Tell us the names of all of the files in the root directories of each of your CDs.
I would like that Oprah asks me if my WIFI connection breaks.. "Do you want to enable data over 3G? Yes / no"... 3G data is really expensive here.

The CDs are provided by the network hence the content will vary between them. They are not an HTC-provided (hence standard) item.

Hi,
Tried googling & forum search with no luck.
As per the subject, is it possible to stop windows mobile to auto-connect to 3G/GPRS when a program requires internet connection?
- I'd like to have a confirmation before attempting to connect 3G.
- If Wifi is present, use Wifi instead of 3G.
Is there any program/tweaks to do the above ?
thanks in advance
use an application called modaco NO DATA

Wheras I have seen you post this link in a few other threads, I would like to know WHY this auto connect is happening. Is it due just to the new WM 6.1 update or an application change.
I am suffering from this annoying connection and have stock HTC WM6.1 (latest)
The new Mobimate Worldmate Live (which is my prime suspect) with auto update disabled!
and Resco Explorer (which checks for registration but was OK before WM6.1).
No auto email checks or pushmail setup.
???
autoconnect is a feature in all ppc windows since wm5
it can be annoying for some of us but for some people it is a bliss cuz they need to be connected 24/7
use a 3rd party and toggle off/on between connections - do it the hard way

advanced configuration that is available on this forum has a timer that will disconnect after so many seconds of non-use, plus a bunch of other settings.
I think the thing that bugs me the most is I would like to know WHAT is trying to auto connect.
In Symbian phones you get a little pop-up that tells you the app that is trying to connect and do you wish to give it permission now and for the future, in WM you have no idea and whatever it is as it does not show up in task manager.
Just a quick one, is it possible to see diamond as a device in my local network? It connects to internet throught my router but it is not visible as another device, same in the other way, i cannot see shared folders in my network from my diamond.
Any suggestions please.
to access your shared folders on your net - use TotalCommander (has a plugin-folder in root-directory)
to access diamond from net - share a folder
no seriously - have not had any need for it (and don't think its really useful either) - but I would try to find an ftp-server for wm or something...
I have a local file server accessble via wifi (or should be) its "\\server"
WHEN Wifi is on and connected and I put that in File Manager "\\server", it says cant connect, but if I put that in PIE it goes there.
Anyone have any ideas how I can get this to work? It used to work in WM6.0.
You should try Resco File Explorer; a LOT better for that purpose. I have been in a similar situation in mapping the drive and it works flawlessly. There's a 15 day trial to check it out; think you'll be pretty impressed.
Try "\\servername\sharename"...
try to access a particular share instead of getting the shares list by using the "\\servername" convention...
try something like "\\servername\sharename" and see what happens...
alternately, i highly recommend schap's rip of the HTC Network Plugin v1.0 Build 30468...it will make the steps of accessing commonly used local shares a whole lot easier by allowing you to map the drive into the "\Network" folder on your device...see 4th post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359458
enjoy!!!
I dont want to buy Resco, but it does work nicely.
\\servername\sharename fails as well and \\servername\sharename\ etc..
I will try the plugin and see. (Update) I instlled it and cant find it anywhere.. How do I "use" it?
Thanks!

Total Commander is free and does this well.
It also has a registry editor, text editor.
Did I mention it is free.
Another thing to check...
maybe your wifi connection is set up in "Internet" mode as opposed to "Work" mode...might explain why it works via PIE...
i think i remember experiencing total failures accessing local shares if my wifi connection was set up as "Internet"
on Settings->Connections->Wifi, edit the particular wifi connection you use and on the first page in the second combo box labeled "Connects to:", make sure the value is "Work"
give that a shot and let us know!!!
That was it!! Thanks! Odd setting really.

woohoo!!! i'm a noob WinMo user as of May 2008 with my Tytn2...coming from 5 years of using something from motorolla that was equivalent to a nokia 3310...totally basic PHONE in the truest sense...no color screen, no camera, big and clunky, pathetic interface...useful ONLY for voice and sms
but my point is that coming from decades of using Windows, somehow WinMo makes sense in a microsoft kind of way with all its occassionally cryptic features and inexplicable odd behaviors...i'm a geek and i'm lovin' it
before this thread is closed, the network plugin is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED...i used to use resco for mapping drives but found its behavior to be erratic when my wifi signal was weak...sometimes taking ages to try to open a share just before the wifi icon would show that the connection had dropped
network plugin, IMHO, seems to work a bit better...YMMV

check in Settings->Connections->Network Plugin
while resco's network drive mapping configuration is accessible only from within resco (even though the shares resco mounts are accessible system-wide in any application whether resco is running or not), the network plugin gives a better "integrated" feeling with WinMo even though it is not much different from resco's capabilities
Got the HTC network plugin working. Now I have 2 ways to access the share.
hi, i remember reading a post on here about someone being able to make / prevent the htc diamond from using the WWW services whilst they are roaming.
however forum searches have not prevailed, can anybody help me find the necessary software or regestry edits needed to make this happen to my phone? im going away soon, and dont want to be raped by my mobile provider!
many thanks!
a google search found my answer! see below:

i think this may work.
You could've used search or google for this one. Search for MoDaco NoData, that's the program you need I guess.
i just deleted the GPRS settings
if you dont want to use GPRS than this works
