Looking To Buy a G1, for AT&T Like provider - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking to buy a G1, for AT&T like provider.
So, i need to use a SIM card that is not TMobile.
Can ANY G1 be unlocked?
Is unlocking same as rooting, or is more like unlocking/jailbreaking on the iPhone?
VERY sorry for the newbines.

As far as i have read, unlocking has to be done by Tmobile only, is that so?
And as i have thought, has nothing to do with rooting.

you can buy unlock codes all over the interwebs and ebay.
They need your IME number and your money. Then they will provide you with the code to enter when you put in a non T-mobile sim card.

What would be a fair price for that? Is it legal? Any recommended places?

ebay has them for about $10.
It is legal as far as I know, T-Mobile will just give it to you for free if you have been with them long enough.

Yes, i was just seeing them for about 10 on ebay.
Thanks.

However, why would you buy G1 for at&t and be stuck on edge network when you can buy Rogers Dream and actually be able to use 3G?

LoL, I'll give you my G1 >_>..

I want to unlock my T-Mobile Wing

I don`t know how or what software use.... so if you can help me THANKS.
(Sorry for my english i'm from latinamerica)
don`t worry for your answer I understand very well english language.
t-mobile will unlock it for free.
how I do that?
how T-Mobile can unlock my phone? cuz when I buy the phone don't have any sim card so I don`t know which is the operator. when I turn on the pda the screen show me a question about a code... I DON`T KNOW WHAT IT IS.
I try with 1234 and 12345678 and NOTHING is locked again and I have to wait a several minutes for try again and that sucks!!!!

Your best bet if T-Mo won't cough up an unlock code, you may have to check out a service for it. There's plenty of places that can unlock ur fone for a price... it's definitely worth it. Just search around

Just call up T-Mo and tell them you are traveling overseas and need to unlock your phone. They'll give you some sort of code you type in.
Correct me if I¡m wrong. You are from Latin America, so you bought your Wing on Ebay or something alike. If that's correct and as T-Mo does not have service in LAmerica, there's no chance to request them the unlock code because the phone is no longer binded to a T-Mo account. It's kind of odd it was not originally unlocked (I got mine through Ebay and I'm LAmerican too). At this point mi advice would be to take it to a tech shop and have it unlocked. It won't be expensive and once unlocked works really great!!

Hehe, I guess I just had a sales chimp try n sell me. When I called in to get my code. The broad would ask me the question all the time "why don't you want to be in our network" or "want to start an account?" Eventually I had to get crunk with her and say "because I don't want to... 1st amendment " She then asked if I had a t-mobile SIM card in the phone and I told her "no" coz i didn't. She then proceeded to tell me "you have to be a customer with us for 6 months before we can give you an unlock code"
Perhaps I should have been a little more persistent but oh well. I may have had to pay 10 bucks but I got what I wanted in the end hehe
In my case... I no longer have t-mobile service, and haven't had it for a good 6 months or so. My current phone (samsung eternity) has a mic that is going lame that they won't cover - and I always liked my old Wing better anyway. I got excited when I pulled it out and downloaded a new rom for it- and with my new data plan I could actually use IM! Unfortunately I discovered that the phone is not unlocked, contrary to what they told me when I bought it off of ebay...
It's ridiculous that I'd have to pay money to use a piece of hardware that I already own. Why are carriers even allowed to sim-lock phones in the first place? Isn't locking the Average Joe into a 2-year contract enough?
But I digress. After reading all these threads with frustrated regulars and whiny newbies, I guess it's either pay to unlock or get myself a new phone, eh..

Thats why i dont buy phones off of Ebay and really does it hurt that much to pay some extra $ to sim unlock ur phone? anyways sim-lokcing the phones was so that other carriers wouldnt use that device but now...pretty much all carriers have the same hTC device but to there own customized verisons of that certain device

Simple sim unlock question.

Hey everyone,
I've been searching on here and somehow I'm not finding ANY helpful info on how to unlock a G1 to work on AT&T. I want to buy one of craigslist and it seems most people aren't able to get customer service to unlock it for me.
Is there any way to unlock it, even if i need to flash the ADP1 firmware or something?
I really thought there would be a sticky for this, but so far all I've found is paid services.
I can borrow a friend's T-Mobile sim if i need one temporarily to access anything for the unlocking.
Thanks!
-Taylor
P.S. I'm hoping to buy one today, so the sooner someone answers my question the sooner i can get in on this new android love!
I believe as of now you have only one choice - buy unlock code on eBay or some other online shops.
get the phone and have a friend that has t-mo say that they are going out of the country and they need the unlock code for their phone. t-mo will ask for the IMEI and you give them that and they will email you an unlock code. but i am pretty sure that you will be stuck with edge network on at&t. not that i have any choice as t-mo STILL doesn't have 3G in stl
Hey, thanks for the help. I only have one friend with Tmobile and she probably could have helped me, but i was hoping there was a more guaranteed way, in case that didn't work. So flashing the ADP1 firmware and bootloader doesn't do it? I assume that the right people have looked at this and all that?
Well it would be cool if we could crack that, but lucky for me i finally found someone with an unlocked g1 at a great price - $250 for a barely used one with accessories and box, still with the original plastic on the screen, it's basically brand new! I was going to buy one that had been used for a few months, just had a charger, and was locked for the same price! I actually thought it might have been stolen till i met the kid, he was driving a brand new car and only looked to be about 18, so basically he was just rich and didn't care too much if he got the most he could get, heh.
So yeah, I have a G1 now and it's unlocked and works great. I of course don't get 3G on ATT but i had an old iphone before that didn't have 3G, so i'm at least not worse of. And somehow the G1 downloads pages much faster than the 2G iphone, interestingly enough, so I'm pretty happy.
Thanks for your help guys. is there a way we could maybe sticky this or something, maybe make a new post that is the official sim unlock thread and sticky that? I never found a place that specifically said you couldn't unlock it, except for a few posts from before the phone was even out with people speculating, so it was pretty tough for me to find out. Sure, i didn't find anything that said you COULD unlock it easily, but i didn't find a lot the other way either and i wasn't sure if I was just missing something.
Thanks,
-Taylor
I used this one to unlock my g1
http://www.unlock-tmobileg1.com/
within 20 min, I received my unlock codes. And it really worked
as t-mobile asked me 125 Euros for unlocking (the Netherlands)

Is it possible to buy an HD7 in USA without being sim locked to a carrier and contract?

In the USA, the only place that sells the HD7 is T-Mobile and it is SIM locked to T-Mobile.
You can though, but it full price without a contract from T-Mobile, and that'll net you around $500.
600.00 and if you buy it off contract I'm pretty sure t-mobile will give you the unlock code but I might be wrong and you might have to use a 3rd party site.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HTC+-+H...skuId=1495036&st=hd7&cp=1&lp=1&contract_desc=
Thanks, even if it costs $600, it will be cheaper in almost $200. If I can, I'll buy it.
Thanks again.
Jota
You can actually buy it on Amazon for $500, no tax or shipping fees, if you are in the US.
http://wireless.amazon.com/dp/B0046RERVQ
Click the Phone Only option, and there you go.
If you are coming to Toronto I'll sell you mine! I love the phone but I have to live on Edge since T-Mobile and FIDO are different Bands. I cannot get 3G with Fido network with the T-Mobile phone. Willing to sell the phone and then wait for WP7 and HTC HD7 that I can get 3G service with. It's unlocked so should work with any carrier. Just make sure you can get highest speed data back in your home land. PM me if you are heading this way.
So what's the procedure for unlocking the unsubsidised phone? Is it unlocked right out the box or would I have to call T-mobile?
I bought one through tmobile. I called them and 24 hours later they sent me the unlock code. via email. They told me it may take 8 days to get it but I got it the next day

sim unlocks

quick question as i did a couple of searches but never got any results is the only way at the moment to unlock a G1 to buy codes online or get them through tmobile?
Thanks
There aren't really any more ways. You could get a "free" sim unlock at this site (http://www.freeunlocks.com/) but I do not know about their credibility. They have a face on facebook and seem legit but ask someone else to make sure.
You need a code, or a turbo SIM (code is better, cheaper).
Tmoible are the only people giving them out for free, they're only meant to give them out if you've been a customer for 3 months (just phone up and say you're leaving the country for a few days, flirt with the rep etc).
If you're going to buy a code get one on ebay, that way you know the testimonials are real.
AT&T also gives free codes but 3 months like T.mobile.
Do all turbo sims work on the G1 because I was planning to buy one but it did not have the G1 model listed?

Why? Codes are cheaper, and once they're entered the phone is unlocked for life. Or are the codes not working for you?
No, I bought a code already but it was 7.75 USD which is kind of expensive.. (turbo sim is less than 2 USD on ebay)

you can unlock your phone then it work on any sim.
try the local mobile shops in your area or contact to your service provider.

[Q] Possible to buy T-Mobile Note 4 outright and bring to AT&T MVNO?

Hey guys, been doing some digging and haven't found anything conclusive so I was wondering if you all could help me out. I would like to buy a Note 4 if and only if a few certain conditions are met and I'm trying to figure out how to accomplish that.
1) I'm really loving how far Samsung has come with toning down TouchWiz, but I still would want root to remove bloatware, install some xposed modules, etc. So far the AT&T variant has no root capability.
2) Having an unlocked bootloader is not a must, but it is a plus. I actually don't want to give up some of the OEM Note features.
3) I have absolutely zero T-Mobile service where I live, so AT&T or their MVNOs are really my only option for a GSM phone
4) 4G LTE is a must
so-
I was wondering if it would be possible to buy a Note 4 from T-Mobile outright (online preferably), get it carrier unlocked and bring it over to an AT&T MVNO?
I don't see anything listing the difference in bands between the AT&T and T-Mobile variant and I don't see any requirements about needed to stay on a T-Mobile plan for a certain amount of time before unlocking, just that the phone has to be completely paid for. Also I can't seem to find the full price for a T-Mobile Note 4.
Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!
Edit: Sorry I posted this to the wrong forum! Trying to find a way to move/delete it!

I believe the full price is $760.
T-Mobile will only provide the unlock after 2 months consecutive service, so you'll need/want to pay for an online unlock service if you want the code immediately....be sure to make a 5 minute or more call with a t-mobile sim (try to borrow a friends or co-worker) before requesting the unlock code from an online unlock service. That is necessary due to Samsung's region lock, the phone needs to "authenticate" that it is being activated in the correct market....you can google and get a clearer meaning of what I'm talking about.

Thank you for the help!
Hmm it looks like the region "authentication" may be a bit of an issue as I know no one with a T-Mobile sim. Again, I live far away from any T-Mobile service but I am planning a trip to an area they service next month. But even if I was to find a friend with T-Mobile I know nothing about online unlock services. I'm guessing you give them your IMEI number and pay a fee and they give you an available code. Now by the look of the websites I'm seeing, this looks to be a little shady (which I could be ok with) but I don't seem to see any indications of what kind of prices I'd be looking at.
Would you happen to recommend a website in particular or know of the cost? Or is this something XDA doesn't want people posting about? Forgive me if what I'm asking is not allowed.
so get sim for $10 and buy $2 a day prepaid plan.

I used cellunlocker.net to unlock 2 S5's, I think they state it takes up to 12 hours or something, but they had my code in about 22 minutes. I have no experience with other unlock services but there are some that sound horrible, I recommend cellunlocker personally.
I think I paid about $34.99 per device, everything worked without a hitch

What this guy said. You don't need to do two months of service. cellunlocker.net is where you want to go.
Is there a risk of T-Mobile blacklisting your handset if you unlock via a third-party or is that FUD? I just picked up my Note 4 today, I haven't activated service yet. I haven't even popped the SIM in. What would they do if I never did? I just want to pay for it and go back to dirt-cheap prepaid.

@unpocolobo Im an AT&T costumer for my Note 4 on 2 year contract which came out 100$ sold it same day for $700 and got a friend to buy me T-mobile one for $750 plus tax so about $800 so personally i spent $200 on phone and then got unlock code from http://www.cellunlocker.net/ only $30 came in under 20 mins. Also i never used the T-mobile sim on my phone so im guessing there is no region lock on them

They won't blacklist it if u paid it off. They have no reason to
T-Mobile will not blacklist fully paid devices, unless it's reported stolen of course.
