Calling while using 3G - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
is it a know issue that while calling, the 3G navigation is not available?
Quite disappointing!!!

I thought the navigation wasn't even actually dependent on a data connection to proceed, once the route is downloaded in full?

ive noticed that all data doesnt work while on a call. i too am very disappointed as i use a lot of data and now it gets interrupted when i get a call. this is the main reason i havent switched from tmobile to sprint...

Something to keep in mind is that performance is going to depend strongly on your 3G connection. I noticed this immediately when I switched to T-Mobile with my AWS Nexus One because my data speed was around 700kbps on a good day.
Now that I've switched to a NAM Nexus One (UMTS 850/1900) and back to AT&T, I have been able to use any data intensive app I want while still on a call since my connection sits around 2.5-3mbps at any given time.

im coming from the touch pro 2 on tmobile and i never had an issue with calling and using data at the same time.

No issues here - data and calling work just fine together, in France, on Orange.

Cannot make calls while on 3g. Tmob advised me to switch to GSM as the solution!!

grrr
what a **** workaround!
that was their response... a **** workaorund that degrades my service..
anyone else had this or any thoughts on it?
Don't switch to GSM, switch to AT&T!
I am not a fan-boy for any of the carriers, but I must say that over the years I have gotten excellent service from ATT - except for when they changed to Cingular, which was a collection of regional companies with regional problems and inability to service - IMHO - a truly mobile client (like I live on the East Coast, but kept a west coast cell number - Cingular couldn't understand or deal with that one)...and the coverage is now better than Verizon's (not to mention the phones and the fact that you can do high-speed data and a call at the same time).
Did T-Mob start pro-rating their release contracts yet?
Don't know.
Am in the uk so cannot get at and t..
boo!
yep, get the same issues, whereabouts are you? im in rainham, and have to turn off the 3g to get reliable incoming calls and make calls, dont have to go too far and it works ok!
romford / ilford seem to be ok with 3g switched on.
I'm in Ilford and when set to Auto band miss calls intermittently so can't use that setting reliably. I wondered if there was a way to set the phone to use only 3G so it doesn't keep trying to switch between 3G and GPRS?
I'm from Indonesia and discovered that sometimes when my network switches me to 3G automatically, I can't receive or make voice calls.
So, I went to phone -> menu -> options -> band -> select network type to GSM istead of AUTO or WCDMA
Unfortunately, I left the 3G coverage area before I had a chance to see if it made any difference

Same here, in central London - have been ranting about this for some time over at Modaco eg here. Not a clear answer apart from perhaps swapping the handset but its hit and miss
Its a really severe problem and I'm losing the plot a little with it. Gutted.
BTW, if you need a way to quickly switch between the two modes, read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345524
There are about fifteen threads about this on here and on Modaco. Its a fact of life with 3g and HTC devices.
It is primarily down to relationship between the network cells and the device.
3G cells are notoriously unreliable and need a lot of maintenance - if you report a problem cell to your network, they may check it out - although they use their own testing to determine which cells need fixing.
Some devices do have weaker transceivers and hence the odd occasion where a device swap helps - but 99 times out of 100 its the network cell. And thus the reason that users find their device works fine on 3g in another location.

Poor voice clarity

I have been using the 8925 for about 3 weeks now. On occasion, my phone will act as if I have a weak signal. Choppy voice etc., on both ends even when connected to a landline. The signal strength will usually have at least 2bars, W/ 3G displayed. The phone will play audio & video W/ out chopping or skipping and this doesn’t always occur in the same area, so I'm unsure what would be causing this. Any comments or advice (pertaining to my issue ), would be greatly appreciated.

what network are you on are u using a sim or a usim
how old is your sim
do you have a spare handset to try your sim in?
have u raised this with your carrier? any known site issues in your area
have you tried manually roaming to see if this fixes the problem?
yea mine is also kinda poor too.
i have a cingular 3g sim card, i can put it in my sda and get full bars, but with this i get 2 bars most of the time.
they say this happends when your phone is connected to 3g and phone at the sametime. try turning off the 3g and initiating a call again
Turn off 3G?
I appreciate the replies.
1. I am on the At&T network
2. Sim
3. No spare phones to sim swap

Since I am located in a major city, 3G is on all the time. Shouldn't the device automatically make voice a priority over data once a call is made or accepted W/ out the user having to shut it down? Let alone having to tell the person on the other end; "Let me call you back, I have to turn off the 3G so my calls won't sound like shizit."

**Update**
At&T told me they performed an over the air sync to my device. So far, I have not sen any improvement. I've even tried to shutdown the data before talking on the phone. Now AT&T is telling me to return the phone, since I only purchased it on Nov. 14th and they now believe the device is faulty.

Here we go again
This is my second 8925 now & still the same thing W/ chopped up conversations, even when I have full bars and am making calls to landlines.
I have tried to disable the 3G prior to calling etc. Also, this never seems happen in the same area, so I don't think it's a coverage issue.
Is anyone else having this problem on the at&t network?
Thanks,
Tobe
I was having alot of the same issue until I upgraded my tilt to xda live 1.2 is current version. The new radio in that rom made a big difference in my neighborhood.

Cingular/ATT Users: HSPDA vs. 3G

Ok so i was messing around with the settings in Kaiser Tweak.. and i have found this..
3G does indeed go faster than HSPDA(aka 3.5G) on my network here in south florida..
In New York City it was the opposite..
another thing that i did notice was that in NY i can have simultaneous voice and data sessions open, but here in south florida i cannot
(ie. Tethering whilst on the phone, or surfing web while on hold...)
i was wondering wether u you all can have simultaneous voice and data, and where??
Colorado Springs, CO: Simultaneous voice and data.
I can do both voice and data simultaneously in Nashville, and was able to do so successfully when I was in various parts of Florida (except when I was roaming off of the Edge network, obviously).
Jacksonville, FL. works fine... might have just been an issue in NY, or you need a new sim then sim updates.
Jacksonville Fl here as well and I have had no issues... I can do it all simultaneous.... where in S. Fl are you?
im in palm beach county...when i go up to martin county simultaneous voice and data works fine..
im gonna gonna be going up there this weekend and checking it out while im there again.
I see that the 3G towers dont have much range, im guessing now that each one works differently.. I dont know if i should get a new radio.

What would a new sim have to do with network speed?

When I worked for ATT they had a training course on the new sim cards and it has to do with the available amount of memory on the chip and the downloads of the tower databases. Older non 3g sims have half the memory of the 3g sims and cannot hold the download that comes to your phone that tells it what towers to use. That was what Tom the network engineer in CFL had advised us of.
HSDPA in Philadelphia, PA is upwards of 1.8mbps. I frequently tether to my laptop and do not get disconnected if the phone rings. I am using the SIM that shipped with my Tilt.
Hey I'm in Palm Beach County too....Nice too see you here.... a quick question for you...do you notice a problem with MMS in Palm Beach County like I do... meaning a long delay in sending to someone not in the ATT spectrum???
Minneapolis - works simultaneous. Tested and verified many times =)

Maybe you simultaneous voice and data didn't work because you had the Kaiser Tweak setting "Disconnect Data Connection after" set to something other than "never" at the time you tried it. Simultaneous doesn't work if you have a disconnect timeout set.
Maryland Baltimore Area
3G and HSDPA
approx equal speeds ( 1.7mbps verified by multiple badwidth tests)
Able to both talk and surf regardless 3G or HSDPA

I'm in delaware, and this is what happens to me. HOWEVER, it doesnt happen if i'm on the edge network, go figure.
ok heres my reviews .. ive done a bit of travelling with my wife and for my job since ive bought my Tilt so i got to see its performance in a few diffrent places.
-Where i live NJ = Fast ( switches between HSDPA and Edge all the time )
-NY = semi fast ( stayed on HSDPA )
-Chicago = slow ( Edge network Only )
London = SUPER FAST ( not only did it stay on HSDPA the entire time, i watched youtube vids and flipped thru them without and lag or choppy screens )
-Boston, around the New England Aquarium = Semi Fast, Edge and HSDPA )
so the way i feel, its alot faster than my Blackberry Curve, and blows my wifes iPhone out the water while on HSDPA. BUT while im on the EDGE network its pretty much at the same speed.

It's normal, EDGE doesn't support simultaneous call and data. 3G does.
ok im in southern california and i can do both data and voice BUT i have never maxed above 800 kbit on HSDPA..really lame but i dont know why

I will attest to Boston and it's environs. I was connected yesterday during back and forth emails, when my wife called, so the simultaneous voice and data works also.
And yes, my wife was calling from her pokey slow iPhone
3G supports simultaneous voice and data and has always worked for me this way in Harrisburg PA on my Tytn II--- until recently.
I now cannot use data while on a voice call. I've tried resetting my data connections and modifying all my tweaks, but it is stuck this way. Has anyone seen this happen?

Orange Uk 3G not allowing calls and delayed txts anyone?

hi i have a touch diamond orange variety and when i travel to scarborough uk i dont get calls and will just get a txt 2hrs late saying missed call and i cant send msgs out.
ive tried my htc tytn 2 and thats the same and i tried my bros omnia and thats the same.
i was wondering if anyone else had same problem either in scarborough or anywhere else on orange uk?
ive tried numerous different radios etc
thanks for any help
rich
I'm on Orange in the UK and swapped to 3G as soon as I did I couldn't make any calls, turned out all my Phone settings were changed. On the services tab check Call Barring, Call Forwarding etc. I've gone back to my old sim only because the receiption for 3G was rubbish in my area. Hope you have better luck. tallen3
What do Orange have to say about it?
They blamed the phone, I managed to change the settings myself, Orange were less than helpful but probably about average for a phone company.
I was asking the OP!
But yes, unless you can actually see the mast with your naked eye 3G reception is a known issue with the Diamond. I have set mine to GSM only.

Orange 3G works fine for me without seeing the mast - even indoors. But that can't be the problem because if 3G reception is to weak or not available then it should revert to GPRS or Edge automatically and will still allow calls.
To the OP - is it all of Scarborough or just particular parts? Does it happen anywhere else in the UK?

The problem I have with 3G on my Orange Diamond is that although the phone just clings onto 3G indoors (about 1 mile from the nearest 3G mast) it drops down onto GSM as soon as I make a call - with associated momentary call interference - and drains the battery a lot quicker on standby (I'm syncing with Exchange every 15 mins 07:00-17:15 Mon-Fri).
If I'm 50 yards away from the mast I get HSDPA, which is handy when I'm in my car queueing at the tip, not...
hi i finally had a call from orange they now say its scarborough that doesnt have enough 3g masts and they have planning permission in for some more.
its strange everywhere else is fine even when i have lower 3g signal than scarborough.
they recommend i leave my handset on auto which doesnt work so was told everytime i go to scarborough manually turn phone to 2g.
not a perfect soloution, and i wonder why scarborough is like that? ever since they activated the hsdpa.
thanks for all the comments and suggestions.
If your phone won't auto switch between the two then it is faulty and Orange should sort it out shouldn't they? Or is it not their phone?

well it does switch between but i have a two bar 3g signal and it doesnt work for calls as explained and therefore wont switch to 2g.
thanks for all your help btw its not just my fone its most win mobile fones that my family and friends have.

"International Data Roaming" - Have you tethered with it?

Many of us are on Simple Choice Unlimited plans. These plans do include what T-mobile called "Unlimited International Data Roaming".
I'm sure many have traveled outside of USA and used their data free. But, have you tried to tether? I'm wondering if it would be a problem and if T-mobile knows we are sharing the data while overseas.
Any insight?
As far as I know international data speeds are 2g so I think thetering will be Imposible, unless you change the plan not sure though

Have you run into problems while being out of USA? Last week I had to travel into Mexico and dunno what the hell happen but my Data was going on and off randomly. It show it was on a mexican carrier getting 3g speed but soon as I tried to open gmail or use any chat app my data seem to get cut off?

Nope, so far i've used it in Taipei and Hong Kong. No problems here.
I travelled to Canada, Dubai, and Pakistan over the summer with my Note 3. Used data with no issues in all 3 countries. Had 4G in Islamabad in some parts. 4G in Dubai. Same with Canada. I'm sure you could tether with those speeds (I got between 5-10Mbps) at the minimum when on my phone was showing "4G."

Once we travel overseas did you just turn the phone on and connected to the avaliable network or did you use a sim, not sure how it works

Just turn on your phone. It will automatically connect to the best available network.
Currently in mexico, im having trouble connecting with movistar , my data seems to be connecting and disconnecting. The only fix i found is to turn off and on my data and itll work for a while. Seems like a bug because a couple months ago i had my note 3 and would work great.
As for tethering, its 2G speeds so its very slow. I tether to my sister as she has sprint.
