OK found it and working
hi, i cant find this in the market place, searched for google maps, anywhere else i can download it from?
You can't find gogole maps in the market? its like their flagship app....
You need android 1.6 or higher to use nav but even if your still on 1.5 you should have the maps app.
so i take it wont work on modace 3.2 ? I have google maps, its the navigation I was after

No you will need to install a custom 2.1 rom first.
any recommendations?
VillainRom 5.2 (soon to be 5.3) is the best in my opinion.
cant find it on 2.1,, i have looked on the market and i just can not see it to download.... can someone help pls.....

You are downloading google maps its built into that
ok, i am sorry if I am being a pain, but i just can not seem to get the 'TomTom' type of view navigation in Google Maps.... how do you activate it ?????
press menu, then get directions, put in your start and end points, select the car icon, then navigate from the next screen(it displays the map they same way brut did with nav launcher). yay!
On villain 5.2 rom and it runs sweetly but 1 issue is the long time recalculating route, i deliberatly drove the long way home, and it took about 1/2 mile to recalculate route, it needs to be a bit quicker imho

I suspect you will find this is because it is an online navigation solution. Routing occurs on Googles servers and is downloaded to the phone along with the appropriate maps, so it is going to be affected by all sorts of factors, including network coverage.

is there a way in which this can be edited to work with say a music app or something, i was driving to college, i had my car stereo on, and also had the satnav on my phone going, but its hard to hear both at once, so is it possible to have as a normal incar built satnav would, music, then it would dim the music so you can hear the directions and then carry on playing because i thought id hook up the AUX cable into the stereo for the journey home and i gotta say it was so boring
Just gone for a drive tonight to test this out. About 20 miles in total and its not bad. Certainly so considering its free. Re-routed me reasonably quickly when i deliberately went off route. Only criticism i have is the voice. You cant really rely on understanding the spoken road names as the american voice mis pronounces most of them. Also a personal gripe is it calling roundabouts a traffic circle.
I wont be using it to replace my sygic mobile maps 9 on my hero but its a good back up to have. Will probably be better for walking.

The reason people are using another app to initialize the GPS is because Google Maps default timeout is riduclously low. As someone who has read 99% of the GPS-related posts in the Kaiser forum, I do not believe there is any other way to do it.
That being said, I am far from a master of Windows Mobile, so if someone knows different, please correct me.
Treo is right. the google time out is pretty shallow, and and about 25-30 seconds. Just use Live Search, its a lot better in terms of the amount of crap it allows you to search for.
Plus, the time out isn't as shallow's as google. As long as you have COM4 selected you'll get a signal within 50-60 seconds from a soft reset. Otherwise once the port is already open its a matter of seconds.
Hmm... strange...
With Google maps installed, I have a GPS signal within about 10 seconds (7 or so), but with Windows Live I don't connect for almost 1 minute. I personally was thinking the new "my location" feature was helping the GPS in some way to narrow the search area.
I have also noticed that I can get a signal within my house without much trouble using google, but again Live Search rarely hooks up.
Am I alone in this finding?

what rom and radio are you using?
1.62.502.0 ROM
1.27.14.09 RADIO
Don't get me wrong, I'm not unhappy with it! I could care less if the GPS works in my house, I think I've mastered the bathroom and kitchen locations
Just noting an opposing observation I've had with my phone in the Portland Oregon Area.
Another observation I've had (it's been a few months since I have used Live Search) is that I can't find a person's house using the Live Search, while I can using the Google.
Finally, I find neither program really what I'd like - Google's only real downfall in my eyes is the lack of auto-updates when not on course (Live Search does this with a prompt). Live search fails because I know products can be faster to get the satellites, as well as lack of residential directions. Google also loads faster, and is the only one that could find the Intel location I work at (one of the largest and well known, would figure it's in both services!) Google also has the aerial view which is nice when trying to figure out massive parking lots (such as at an Intel Campus). Live Search won a few points back because I liked the movies listings, buggy voice searching and auto-updates, but not enough to make me use the product. I will probably be loading it up again sometime before the summer though just to see what sort of progress they have.
And that stoopid connection error poop
I have just gotten used to opening QuickGPS weekly, and gps tool each time. It takes just a few seconds to open GPSTool and start the thing, then close it, and most apps will work after that.
I find GoogleMaps to be poorly designed, albeit free. My biggest issue by far is the connection error. There's a place on the way to work where Google maps just stops, throws a "you have to have a connection" error, and the only option is quit. I quit, immediately restart, and it works from there. I've had that error in some very densely populated areas (River Oaks is the highest price homes, you can bet they have cell antennas in abundance around there, yet it happened around there yesterday.) If it needs to download maps, it can just keep tracking, and get the map when it can, or mention "waiting for map". Idealy you'd be able to cache, best would be able to define certain areas, and it wouldnt even have to download the maps if they havent updated.
Dont get me wrong, as usual Google has done some neat work here, but there are disctint design flaws that make it nearly unusable. So much so that if I dont need the traffic, and just want to see streets, I use tomtom.

The question is not WHY people open GPSTest before opening Google Maps.
The question is how to open both apps via a script, batch file, etc...

Hi,
A month or two ago I downloaded a promising app off the market (sorry, can't remember the name). It used google maps and provided turn by turn directions with voice cues. After wiping I can't find the app - does anyone remember what it was called? It seemed a little slow / too big for the Dream, but was much better than the other free mapping apps on the market now. I've googled and searched the forums a few times w/o coming up with anything. Thanks.
PS if this post is out of line since the app likely violated Google Map's API licensing, sorry, it was free and I don't see the harm.

I think the app you are talking about is 1-click-direction
Hmm... it looks close, but I don't think that's it. I could have sworn it had turn by turn directions, and the interface here doesn't look familiar. It's been a few of months so I suppose I could be forgetting, but really I thought I'd tested the turn by turn. No one else remembers seeing this? This probably would have been in end of May, or maybe early June.
It might be gNaviHelper, but I can't be sure - apparently I've used it before and my free trial is up. Is it worth $9?
I don't think there is any turn by turn navigation on the market yet. ANDNav2 would be the only app that has turn by turn but thats not fully functional yet in the US. There is telenav that has turn by turn, but its not available on the market you have to go to there website to download it. I use to have it and its pretty nice but after a couple months I thought it was a waste cause my JVC unit has built in navigation. If I'm wrong on anything feel free to blast me.

I'm with you on that one. Additionally it's only a 1 time +/- $35.00 charge. No monthly like Telenav.
Yeah co-pilot is the way to go.
I wonder if AndNav or something similar could be ported from navit, navit builds a data file from OSM data, but it halves the size of the OSM file and does turn by turn etc.
from what i can tell, co-pilot wants to take all of the california maps, even all the maps if i wanted them (1+gb) and put them on my phone?? it says not enough memeory but how do i get tit to save all that info on the sdcard??? did it tell me not enough space cuz the sdcard didnt have 1+gb?? cuz i just i didnt have room on my sdcard either. LOL! *slaps self with large trout* hahahhaa
I have been using nav4all, it seems to be a decent app. I can say that it is actively developed. I believe the developer is working on an android interface. Here is the link to the apk.

CoPilot needs about 2GB free initially to unpack the map data. After it is unpacked, it only takes up about 1.1GB of space.
depends on the map.....
Europe takes 1.9GB
the app is well worth it!

what i have installed for turn by turn is nav4all on the market its FREE too. you also have an option for a nice female voice. tho the UI is actually pretty ugly and u may have to get used to it. but it well worth it for being free.
If you live in the city, it really doesn't matter which option you pick, as long as you like it.
Unfortunately, if you're in (or going to be in) an area with very little GSM coverage, co-pilot would *seem* like the best option since it doesn't need a cell signal to operate.
The problem I've had is that co-pilot loves to forget that it has been registered. Unfortunately, it won't tell you this until you're trying to shave an hour off your road trip by hopping off the interstate and going through the woods...and don't have a phone signal.
Andnav2 works pretty well in the US. It is much better than the other options, and does not require a data connection for navigation.
Nav4all
it called nav4all
Has anyone tried Navigon on their Captivate? I remember seeing some speculation that apps that rely on Google Maps may have bad tracking due to software. Just curious how well Navigon performs before I plunk down the cash.
the new version of Navigon that came out yesterday, actually runs on a map pack you download. It even says to make sure your on wifi in the app description on the market.
My GPS on my Captivate hasn't been as bad as some. While using Google Nav, I'll occasionally get the dreaded blue circle, but for the most part, it keeps me on the road.
I bought this yesterday and had it download the maps. I used it for a 30 minute drive to work and it worked good for me. It kept me on the road, didn't lag and had accurate maps (since they're NAVTEQ like Garmin uses). Halfway here, the app did close and restart itself and I had to re-select my destination. Not sure what happened there, but I'll try it on my way home again too.
Its got some nice features. It announces street names like Google Nav (CoPilot doesn't do this I don't think). It has Google Live Search for POIs, which is a HUGE plus for me instead of relying on a static database. Has red light camera alerts and quite a few other features.
i use navigon on daily basis and i love it. better than any other navigation software for android.
Just got the Navigon app. Love it!!!
Here's my take: all features aside, it seems to be better at dealing with Samsungs funky GPS than Google Navigation.
With Google navigation, I'd be driving and all of a sudden it'd think I was a block laterally and it'd wreak *havok* on my turn by turn directions. This is called losing a lock.
With Navigon, didn't happen in my 30min test in downtown Chicago. my phone acted just like the iPhone I had before it.
I don't think this app fixed GPS. I think it just knows how to deal with crummy hardware / drivers
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Also guys its on sale on for 2 weeks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Installed tonight...45 min drive...quick/basic eval...
There are features I like about this, and in my basic test tonigh, I have not been able to test some of the 'fancy' features mentioned above. Here are some initial thoughts:
The Good
Much more pleasant voice
I loved the fact that it put up a speed limit sign in upper right, showing the speed limit of the street I am on. Updated immediately when SL changed
As others above said, it seems to definitely handle the funky Captivate GPS better
Seemed to get directions faster, and update faster when not following directions, than Google Nav
It does have a Google Search for POIs, although I found it did not bring up a complete list. For example I searched for Walmart. There are 2 in my town, and it brought up only the one closed to me, which is a much smaller one than the other
The Ugly
It did not consistently say street names. In fact most of the time it didn't
If you moved to another app, or if my music player came in front, the NAV stopped working. When I switched back to it, it had to re-load or something (had a wait type message) and then had to reroute
When playing through my Motorola 505 through to radio, the voice played on both the phone and BT, and this phone (maybe all Android phones, I don't know) has a delay at teh bluetooth, so it sounded like an echo
The map had almost none of the streets named as you drove. It just listed the next turn street listed. It didn't even indicate what street you are driving on.
My comparison software would be Google Nav, of course, and also TomTom on Winmo, which I used over the past 3 years. There are features in Navigon that are not in either of those, but for the basics, it doesn't, IMO, come close to Google, nor my OLD TomTom.
My need for this would really be only to have a backup solution should I go somewhere that I cannot receive data for Google. I am undecided whether to keep it or return and hope TomTom is better, whenever it comes out.
I must admit though, one thing that this product, I belive like the others above, may not put me on wrong streets like happesn with the Google Nav. But then, I haven't tested it that much yet.
google has 24 hours refund. is it really easy for refund? i wanna give navigon a try
I just returned mine a couple hours ago.
Typically, you get a notice right when you uninstall "Your account will be credited", or something like that, but I didn't. So it had me worried.
but in about 5 min I received an email from Google Checkout that my account would not be charged.
Its as easy as uninstalling the app.
I decided to give it a shot. It never found me on my entire drive home. I'm running a fresh install (as of this morning) of Cognition 2.2 beta 9.1.3.
I told it to display map, and it just had some random map scene and a red bar across the top that had GPS in all caps. After a while, I hit the menu key, GPS-Info, and it has my Lat and Long at all zeros.
Not sure what to do other than take solace in knowing I'll have a working Navigon in my future Android handsets. I was too trusting of it and didn't test it within the initial 24 hours, so there's no refund button.
When I tested with it, it was a bit slow to get a hook, but I kicked off GPS Status, and it got a hook pretty quick, then Navigon did too. After that, the few times i used it, it hooked up OK.
my complain is that it has no ROUTE listing! i probably going to uninstall it and get refund. let say i dont want to use freeway 101 and use freeway 80 instead. but you cant! cus there is no route listing!

When I first put in my destination it gives me a list of 3-4 routes and I can select the one I want, otherwise after about 10 seconds, it defaults to the My Route (orange) one.

Have you tried other GPS apps to get a lock? That is more like a phone/ROM issue than an app issue. Try Google Maps, or download GPS Status from the Market and try that one.
I'm on Cog 2.2 Beta 9 and it works here. If you turn on all the location assists in the settings, it should help you get a faster lock. You could also check out the Jupiter files in the Dev forum. Get v006 and copy the 3 files and reboot...it might help.
Some people have no luck getting a lock without messing with settings or files, and using a different app usually doesn't change that.
Are there any apps that load full maps onto my gtab so I don't need to have a data connection to use my bt gps for navigation? As it is now, I believe Google navigation requires either wifi or tethering to work...
Co-pilot in market.
or you can find a version of motonav (basically igo 8.x) and maps from mobilism.org -- best 3d nav software out there that only requires gps, no data. map sets are ~1-2gb and you can get every single state and pretty much any country in the world now (teleatlas/navteq, mixed or whatever).
sort of tough for newbies to get really into customization, but i was huge into this on my past 2 mio devices, so if you need a hand drop me a line on here, no prob.
Thanks. I just dl'd co-pilot, but it says my trial is over, even though I entered my market order id.
I'll try motonav on my other machine and compare.

I went round and round with Co-Pilot about that. I had it on my phone and had de-activated it but it would not activate on my G tablet. They sent me a link to download directly from them. It worked with my registration info after that.
How hard would it be to get Google navigation setup with an external GPS unit? I'll probably be picking up a GTablet soon, and am wondering how hard it would be to setup it as a navigator. Could it be done (if so, how easily) by hooking it up with a GPS unit? (Yea, it already does what I want the tablet to do, but its 3+ years old and slooooow to run haha). That or I could use the GPS on my phone once I get it running (HTC Vogue).

It is not hard to make GPS work with an external unit. Using Google Navigation though requires an internet connection since Google does not store the maps on your device. So you can use an external GPS receiver, and tether your phone for data. Or, there are ways to use the GPS in your phone and tether too. I have not tried it but hear it can be done.
BTW, I still have an ancient HTC Vogue that I run Android on too...

I would prefer to use Google nav because it works really well. The Vogue does not have wifi though and I have not found a way to tether it using bluetooth. So I use a program called Co-Pilot. It is only $4.99 in the market for the US version but it can be a pain to get activated on the G tablet. ALK who makes the program sent me a link to a non market version that did install with my registration info. It works ok, but not as well as Google nav. Seems to be missing plenty of addresses that are not new and should be there. They do have a way to let them know what is missing but I don't know how often they update.

No Joy with CoPilot
I purchased CoPilot through the Google Market place ($4.99 for USA) but no joy in installing it. Same 703 errors. Finally got through to someone in tech support (emails went unanswered) but their advice (basically wipe program and start again while downloading the maps separately onto my PC and then into the g-tablet) still resulted in errors. Since the holiday is coming up, this will probably not get solved in time for next weeks vacation/test run.
Oh well. For five bucks I wasn't expecting a lot and my MIO unit is still operational. Just hoping for some text to speech voice turns from my g-tablet. I will poke again after the holidays. Seems like a combination of the date not resetting or hard coded in the downloaded apk or authentification not getting out (since it is a wifi only machine; the program is expecting the telephone).
Unless anyone has any other suggestions?
success install after rom uprade
I installed latest ROM upgrade (3.1.1) and was able to get co-pilot installed and working. Combination of wiping user data and alk receiving gapps sales information.
No luck with John or Lisa. Anyone with hints for getting the voice portion working.
Not an official part of the beta...but I've been installing and using the betas via apkmirror. I use the Sony XAV-AX100 for android auto on it's latest firmware (1.02.06 as of this writing). Phone is a Nexus 6P running 7.1.2. Started with the v4.24.0.113 beta....it worked...albeit with frequent crashes/restarts. It seemed VERY beta. Sometimes it didn't audibly report hazards/police, etc. The "OK Google" style voice recognition worked fine in the app....e.g if I had Waze selected for Nav, a "Navigate to DESTINATION" responded with "OK, handing that to Waze..." and then the destination came up fine in Waze.
I tried this on a few long trips, but ultimately the frequent crashes (sometimes at critical navigation points) were too much, so I largely reverted back to Google Maps.
I am now on v4.26.0.902. It is overall MUCH more stable than the 113 beta, however, all of the OK Google voice recognition defaults to Google Maps...e.g. "Navigate to DESTINATION" switches you to Google Maps by default, even if you are in Waze when you do it...even when tapping the microphone in the waze search box. I really hope that isn't going to be the case in the release version of this when it comes out. It's kind of a deal breaker....you really need that ability to choose a new navigation destination on the fly with voice commands as you can do in GM.
Overall Feedback for both versions so far:
1. I miss the speed/speed limit overlay terribly. I know they are dealing with a screen real estate issue here...but I'd really like to see this added back in.
2. No ability to send ETA in the AA UX. Not really a deal breaker for me....I found this functionality spotty at best in the release versions of Waze.
3. The Map detail could be better. I know the head unit has lower resolution than my phone, but Google Maps looks much better on it.
4. I wish the dark theme/dark map would work on AA. If I switch the lights on, it goes to dark, but I'd like the ability to have this on all the time. The dark map seems to look better on the head unit's screen.
I'd be interested to hear the experiences of others so far.....
You know, I just don't understand the lack of talk in this forum about Waze Beta. I keep coming here and looking and this is really the only thing about it.
1. Speed limit overlay is coming back, they talked about it when the new version came out last week.
2. Agreed. It should prompt you via voice after you hit a Send ETA button on who you want to send it to.
3. Agreed. I am a Geographer/GIS Specialist by trade, so I know maps, this small of font on the screen when driving is unacceptable. The detail is also very poor.
4. You DO know you can set your Android Auto to always be Night Mode right? I prefer it that way.

Gives you the dark map all the time. Dark Google Play Music is better too.

I did not know that! Thanks for the tip!
I've got 905 installed now but the "Navigate to DESTINATION" via voice switching you to Google Maps by default issue persists, unfortunately. 113 didn't do that. I really hope they restore that so that it uses your last used navigation app, similar to how music works.

905? Is that a new version that is AA capable?
We should use this thread, or maybe start a new one to notify XDA folks that do stumble in here when there's a new AA compatible beta. I've had to find out on *shudder* Reddit.
Installed 4.27.0.0 Beta on Friday. http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/waze/waze-gps-maps-traffic-alerts-live-navigation/waze-gps-maps-traffic-alerts-live-navigation-4-27-0-0-release/
I can confirm this version works with AA. Seems very stable, they fixed the "Navigate to DESTINATION" issue as well. Still no Speedometer. It may be because I've switched to always on night mode, but the map seems to look a little better than it did. I think they still need work with the fonts, etc. but this looks promising.
How does waze download map? I use it in car without Internet.
Last time i used it, i send Internet from phone to find the destination. Then i stoped Internet and working fine.
Last time i was in a trip, i started waze again, without Internet and without settings an adress. It was working but after a few minutes it didn't have map anyone. It just showing black for map..
Probably if i started Internet again it would show map. The program was working. It did work navigation but without map..
So i think when you search an andress, it download the map to go there. So even without Internet it will work. But if you dont follow the navigation and go to some other place, it wont have the map from the other place..

The purpose of this thread is for discussion of the Waze Beta on Android Auto. Perhaps you should ask your question in the general Waze forum: https://www.waze.com/forum/ With a general google search, I found this relevent thread here: https://www.waze.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=657&t=67879#p682703
Installed 4.27.0.1 beta. Working fine with AA. I don't see any feature updates...seems to be a bug fix release.

Hey there. I am having trouble with android auto. I have the same head unit as you as well as the same phone. I have tried many times to get android auto running with my phone on the head unit and I always get a message about "android auto will resume when you are parked". The head unit does not give this message when connected to a samsung phone or an i-Phone (apple car play). This error only pops up with my device, Nexus 6P so I am assuming it was wired correctly by the installer. Can you PLEASE let me know what ROM you are on (including the build date) and possibly what cord you are using to connect to the provided USB extension cable? I have yet to get this head unit to work with my Nexus 6P and I have tried a different ROMs, settings, reboots etc. Please help.

I'm on the stock ROM....7.1.2 Build No: N2G470. The cord is just a generic USB-A to USB-C cord I bought at Fry's Electronics. FYI...I installed the head unit myself, and I think I may have had that issue initially. What I did to resolve it was ground the parking brake wire. This allows you to watch video on the head unit as well, if you have a USB stick with media on it (although I never do that).
Hope that helps....

Thanks skylaneffz. I am going to get the parking break wire grounded tomorrow. Debating if I want to just return to stock now and if everything works tomorrow, I can try a custom rom again later. Kinda annoying that I can get my girlfriends I-phone to work with the head unit and not my own. Currently running pure nexus 6/12 with no luck. Thanks again for your advice. Getting waze to work will be the next step once android auto is up and running.

I'd see if grounding the brake wire works first if I were you. Seems like a lot of trouble to go through. I'm on the stock ROM because my "Flashaholic" days are over

Thanks,
I may revert to stock regardless. I only really use a custom rom because they tended to be considerably better than stock (at least initially with battery life etc). I have not been on a stock rom in so long I have no idea how they compare to customs now. Since i have flashed so many times now trying to get this to work, and I had no guarantee any flash would prove fruitful, my phone is not even completely set up. LOL. So may as well give stock a spin. Regardless, thank you so very much. I was about to give up hope getting android auto to work with my phone and head unit. Especially since the good people of Sony have told me twice the head unit does NOTwork with 6P (granted they also told me twice it did). Gotta love their customer service.
Apparently the release version is out now:
https://www.blog.google/products/android/waze-android-auto-here/
The release version seems to be the same as the last beta: 4.27.0.1
Android Auto now working with regular Waze release!
Yeah, but missing lane assist and no speeding limits is really annoying.
And the calculated arrival time is on Google maps much better than Waze. Only thing what is very cool are the speed traps in waze.
Waze has got wrong routing to me and is not a good navigation system. And i don´t like the social blabla with points and that stuff...
Maps and TomTom are much better.

I think there's a lot more stuff in ways that's a cool than that. Being able to go in and edit the map and add things or remove things and adjust them is fantastic. I do a fair amount of editing when I have time. Also the other reporting has turned out to be extremely important for me and has kept me from running into rather large roadkill and other trash items on the road from people towing trucks down to Mexico here in New Mexico.

You may want to check your ways settings and make sure that they are set correctly for you. You can also do editing in your area to adjust the way that routing happens and it'll work better.
