Display Task List? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I was in the Market -> Downloads and was going through the apps and rating them. At some point, my fingers went crazy and I did something that brought up what appeared with a quick glance as a window with icons for the currently running applications. There were only 6 of them I think. My question is, how in the world do I bring that list back up again? I've tried everything to get it to display with no luck.

keep "Home" pressed.
its the last 6 apps that were opened, not the ones in the background.

Thanks! I was driving myself crazy trying to figure out what I did. Not very useful to me but nice to know. Figures, I long-pressed everything but the Home button.

How to switch between task?

As above, is it possible to do that in HTC Dream? Mine is rooted and flashed to 4.2.3.
What I mean is that, when I am using this application (ABC), then I want to open another application (XYZ). After using XYZ, can I swtich to ABC with the state still being there? Meaning it will not open like a new application, but go directly to the screen that I was previously at?
Hold the home button to see running tasks.. then pick one.

it will only go back if the phone has enough ram to keep it stored, else android will kill the process
goldenarmZ, if i'm not wrong when holding down the 'Home' button, is actually opening up recent opened applications.
B-man007, means there is no way to switch around tasks?

If they're still in memory, it will switch back to the same instance you were using, if not it'll launch a new one.
How to make one application stay in memory?
Advanced Task Manager can stop processes from getting killed.. It's in the market.
Yeah, I have that application too but how you make it not being killed?
Is there a faster way? Holding home just seems like it takes forever.

[Q] Rooting & Profiles

Hey total noob question I guess but I'm excited to root my new hd+ and install the gapps zip BUT I haven't seen any info about what effect if any this will have on any child profiles I have setup already on the device. Has anyone done the root thing that has child profiles? Thanks.

I just added a child profile to my already rooted HD. When I was in the child profile, I could go to the other launcher I had installed, open the app drawer, and see all my non B&N apps. The only ones not showing were the ones blocked on the BN side. So I could open my Dolphin browser and browse without restriction.
You could make the B&N Home your default launcher so it was difficult but not impossible to get to the non-BN stuff, but then it would be a pain for you to use too.

Hmm. I was afraid of that. Thanks for the help!
Ok I'm close. I've rooted from the handy zips and from what I can tell the child accounts can't access notifications. The message is there but it can't be selected from the child accounts. So if I can figure out a way to slap a launcher shortcut up there I can have the home button go to the Nook launcher and a top button that goes to the Android one.

Yes, depending on the child though you can access applications by tapping the "Apps" on the application screen while holding the VOL- button too. Maybe we'll get 4.2 on CM10...?

I bet there's an app for that. Can't recommend one myself, but I'm pretty sure I've seen something mentioned around here before.
If you find something, be sure and let us know. I'm sure there are others that could use this.

I did find something. It's called "Notification Toggle" in the Play Store. I can't post links yet.
Basically you can set the notification area as a app drawer. Right now I just have a link back to the Nova Launcher.
I was wrong before though...child profiles CAN access the notification bar. I swear I tried 14 times and couldn't but then I tried it again and it came down. Very weird.
I really wish there was a way to hack the nook app list to let me just add Play store installed stuff there. Even if I had to hand code it would be worth it. I also discovered that my 2 year old could still get to the Nook store even though I had it disabled in his profile. It seems to let apps link back to it regardless. It kind of has me rethinking the content restrictions which is the whole reason I bought the thing.
Weird. I tried to access notifications from a child account and couldn't either. Was it after you added the app that you could?
That's too bad that the profile restrictions don't even seem to be working. The child profile I made just to test this out was for a 10 year old. I left all the initial setup options default, and I noticed that they were suppose to be able to look at kids stuff in the store. Browse but not buy I guess. But I didn't really look too much into it since I don't actually need it. Just mildly curious.

Yeah after banging on the notification bar for a long time today I figured it out. The child profile doesn't give you the same size "hotspot" that the normal one does but if you hit a tiny area between the notification icon and the dots showing what home screen you are on you can get it open, and once I figured out the teensy area I was trying to hit I could pull it up consistently. It's like the programming in the profile put a dead zone over the button but didn't cover it all the way.
As for the store, I just put a password on purchases. Apps that direct link to another app (like the Dr. Suess books) will take you right in regardless of how you have the store settings checked in parental controls.

Should I swipe away recent apps, or are there negatives to doing so?

I don't swipe away my recent apps because I'm worried it has a similar effect to using a task killer (i.e. closing running apps that are *already* in a low powered state, that then take more power/battery to re-open). Is that true?
It's never been a problem before but now that lollipop and chrome use it to switch between tabs, I realize how cluttered that menu is getting.
Edit: edited the title to idk, make it a more open ended question...
Edit2: Also I just noticed, after restarting the phone, all of the apps in that list are still there. So is it possible that they are just "shortcuts" and don't actually indicate and/or affect (when swiped away) whether an app is actually running or not?
Its the same thing as closing the app. I don't know the effect one way or the other. I typically close them all at night because I'm OCD

Thanks for the reply, I usually back out of apps to close them. But they obviously still show up in that list after doing so. So is swiping them away a more final (task killer-esque) closing?

App draw sorting

Just picked up my 64gb s6 edge and noticed that you can actually sort the app draw by alphabetical order. I could of swore ppl ssaying that it wasn't possible.
They where, but was unfounded. Even the screen shot of the device at mwc showed the A-Z button. People just like to get all worked up over stuff. Just like the HTC overheating issue and the sgs6 bend gate. A hydraulic press can bend a phone at 170lbs OMG no way! LOL
I'd be surprised if there was ever a phone moving forward that didn't sort alphabetical.
That being said on mine it won't stay A-Z. I can press the button and it will change it but if I go out and come back I have to do it again. Is this working the same for others? Or is it keeping the alphabetical order after the first press?

Weird. Mine stays alphabetical.
Well that's good to hear. I'll reset mine and see if it starts working.
Thought it would be weird to put the alphabetical order in and make it rest every time.
A-Z in App draw
Hey guys,
I just got my S6 Edge, I'm in the UK and my App Draw definitely does NOT have an A-Z button. the only button I got is the EDIT button which allows you to manually move them about or uninstall the app.
Mine sorts, but I've noticed that any new apps I install go to the end of the list until I re-sort. Not a big deal to me, just have to remember it every time I install something new.
no a-z in app draw
im also in the uk and only have an edit option on the app draw (s6 edge), so that means i cant sort my apps alphabetically? is there another way to do it?
US VZW here. I have A-Z but it resets constantly.

Need some suggestions from you guys.

I am getting this tablet ready to send off to SO's mom for Christmas. I want to make a guide book of sorts to help her use the tablet. I'v rooted it, put nova launcher and gotten rid of lock screen ads. As well as put the google play store on it.
What should I include in the guide?
So far its how to turn the device on/off, and thats basically it :/ I just can't get my self in the head of a non-tech savy elderly individual.
Did you block OTA updates or it might undo all that you've done at some point?
A quick line on what all of the apps on it atm are for maybe.
How to buy a book, show, app
What the various icons in the status bar, notification panel mean
How to change the notification sounds and possibly font size.
Could put some bookmarks in the browser for sites you think she'd want
Got the ota blocked. Thanks for the suggestions. So far I have turning it on, what the home screen is, and app drawer.

Do you mean actually background running or the recent apps on the square button carousel?
If the latter I don't think it's significant, if you look in running apps and cached processes on android though you'll see the older ones that most of them aren't in either anyway. Some of those processes in settings just restart as well.

Does it not slow the tablet down if every app is in it?

No, it makes no difference.
maybe load up on commonly used apps and tell them how to use?
how to set up email sync.
Newsstand for people who read news.
I set large text from accessibility options for my parents' device.
