Morning ladys and gents! Id just like to say a HUGE thanks to those who keep this forum up and running, provide info, tutorials and development for these handheld wonders!
the reason for my outbirst of gratitude is because ive recientley upgraded my imate PDA2k Smartphone to wm6.5!
After spending a few days getting everything in place, following instructions from chef_tony and a few other issue threads, and runing a few mock runs in my head.. the final thing came together and was finaly put into physical motion this morning arround 7am! with Complete success!
So, next thing is to figure out how to install various bits and bobs without compomiseing the installation and feel my way about.
So again, thanks a bunch everyone, if a complete flashing novice can do it, then im sure allmost anyone can, if they can be arsed to read the information provided
keep up the fantastic work everyone!
Mark.
ditto
i know exactly how you feel man...after reading and browsing several threads here in this forum i finally get the courage to upgrade my BA...it took me 'quite' a while before having a go at it..
i would never have the guts to push through with it without the support and generous nature of the people in these forums, especially Chef_Tony, who helped me out and patiently guided me through the steps that are needed (as of this writing, i've already 'flashed' two ROMs)..now i feel like i have a new phone each time i flash ROMs..
people who are not selfish to share their knowledge and expertise to those like us who are 'newbies' in this area, are what keeps this forum alive and prospering..may their tribe continue to increase..

Congrats and thank you for taking the time to research first!

Yes. Excellent job. Now you should work on seeing if you can fix the dropped calls issue with that ROM while using data apps
Good to see some successful posts.. out of many unsuccessful ones.
impressive! didn't think it was possible anymore but I have reason to continue living! thanks ec9!
In the famous words of myspace addicts...."you're in my top 8!"....
But since I'm on T-Mobile I can say...."you're in myfav5!"

That is amazing to see now. Very impressive.
hey!!
ec9, i feel exactly the same way as you!! i started the same way as you did. this device is awesome, i bought it the 1st week it was out went around looking how to customize it. after reading a lot on here ive successfully unlocked and flashed my 2nd ROM! it was moliskis rom. awesome site... Thank you all for making it what it is!
Just f*ucking Google it...
I too, came to XDA on a chance Google search. After spending several hours reading and chasing various links around, I identified my device as a G4, performed the reception fix, CID-unlocked it via the $42 IMEI site, and flashed it with Molski 3.0.0.0 -- NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. (Except for missed calls, non-responsive buttons, etc., but that's ALSO covered in a separate thread)
XDA is an amazing resource, with some incredibly talented people. All I can say to other noobs is to be patient, thorough, and to READ READ READ.
The answers are there, you just need to calm down and LOOK. Don't try SH*T until you're confident you know what you're doing. (Excuse my language)
I LOVE XDA-dev!!
Very Impressive.
Great !
This is a great forum for ANYONE to learn about their devices and see how much they can push to do the things that the devices can do.
I think right out of the box, these devices are kinda limited in their potential. The great guys here in this site make it better and help these devices achive higher grounds.
I am very glad that you had a great experience. I have been this forum for a little over a year and always had great help and experience.
I'm also glad to see someone actually knows how to READ!!
Even though I've had my Wizard for almost 10 months now, xda was one of the FIRST sites I bookmarked after getting it. Even though I registered right away, I read threads for several weeks before ever posting anything.
I had CID and SIM unlocked and flashed to two of Summiter's ROMs within the first 6 weeks I had my phone. That was all it took to become addicted. If I'm not on here reading every day, I go into "information withdrawal".
I'll never be at the level some of these gurus are at, but I'm learning some of the "how-to's" little by little -- and, expanding my knowledge of how to do things that I wouldn't have DREAMED of doing with this phone a year ago.
I'll admit it -- I'm HOOKED!!
Congrats on picking up the information so quickly. I'll have to echo what's already been said here about a GREAT first post by a NOOB!!
Im glad that some newbie's are able use the info here and in the immortal words of the crystal method "there is hope"
We must all give credit to all those ROM cooks for all there hard work and diligence and to the other members that have made it so simple to understand and learn through there trials and errors.

Sorry, I have to totally dissagree with all the praise you are getting.
How can anyone know that thier new device is not 'going to be what they wanted' in less than a day? You will have no base line to measure changes against.
I believe everyone should be made to use their new device for a month, dead standard! I can't help singgering, laughing and shaking my head in disbelief when I read about people complaining that they have to reset 4-5 times a day, that their device freezes, crashes, conflicts, or things don't work, etc, etc. Then they abuse HTC, MS and anyone else they can think of - some people curse and abuse their device, describing it as crap and shouldn't be sold like this.... then they tell you all the changes and mods they have made, and the rubbish they have installed and.... WHAT DO YOU EXPECT!!!!
My Hermes is dead standard and runs like a dream - constantly impressed by it.
I have no quams about people wanting to mod, develop, experiment, etc. but please use your device in original config for long enough to know if you are making improvements or making a mess.
IMHO anyway.
Welcome!
Since a longer time I'm reading the forum and thanks to you guys I learned a lot about my Wizard. I know now how to unlock and "unsimlock" my phone, how to flash it and many many more.
Before I will ask a question I'm reading and searching a forum to find that what I need, that's way until now I didn't post anything, so I want just to say hello to all members.
People gatherd here are very talented and helpfull people.
Best regards.

If you buy a truck for off-roading and find out the first day that it doesn't have 4 wheel drive, should you continue to drive it for 30 days to see if it will magically appear?
Congrats for researching, mate... I dunno if anyone else feels this way, but there seems to have been an influx of semi-retarded users posting recently saying things like "why won't my Sony Ericsson P990 flash???"... ok it's a bit of an exaggeration, but they're still bloody dum questions!
Like you when I found this site, I spent at least 2 days researching before I even tried to modify anything and everything I searched for came up with appropriate answers... in DEPTH! And the pay-off was quick and painless as a result... my universal now works - full stop. With the O2 ROM, it was a bag of poo compared to what it was made for, and I say that after 8 months or so of usage with original ROM.
I will be pointing resident idiots to this thread too from now on. Many thanks for your intelligence, it's what contributes to this site being as great as it is
Geez. this is the first time I've seen this post. That was like the XDA Developers Hall of Fame at the beginning. Anyway, congrats to the original poster and all who learned the right way. Mods can we re-title this thread "The Perfect Newbie" and make it a sticky to replace some of the outdated ones?
To be or not to be Noob ........
There are loads skulkers like myself that have never bothered to post.
I bow to the superior knowledge of the Windows Mobile gods and keep my trap shut until I have learned / read enough to say something intelligent on the topic.
Most things are clearly labled and easy to find.
Some of the useless post just add clutter and makes it difficult to find the truely useful info.
There will always be impatient PFY's and noob's that can't be bothered to search.
Search + Google is your friend.
so, i dont know how yall here deal with general newbs to the site, but with a few other forums that i frequent(automotive related forums) they encourage the new members to make an intro post in the off topic.
so here i am. my name is Nick, i have an HTC wizard in the form of a cingular 8125, and i honestly do not plan to post much. only read and learn, and ask when i cant find clear info from the search, or simply do not understand something. not trying to pride myself, but i do consider myself somewhat tech savy, yet the information i have allready found/read here(i've been reading through topics for weeks now, through the shopping stage for a new phone, to how to's about upgrading and such for the said phone) has been top notch. very in depth, yet easily understandable. kudos to you all.
Welcome to the forum!
Let me reassure you that you are off to a great start here!
I think in fact you can stop referring to your self as noob since you already poses two qualities which will keep you from getting flamed on this forum:
1) You know exactly what phone you own.
2) (And this is a most important) You know to read and search before asking.
This used to be a small technical forum a few years back (before even I joined) so when people see a question like "Urgent! I need WM 6 now!" or "
What phone did I by, it has a green background?" (yes we do get questions exactly like this) some of the users tend to get a little testy.
But never be discouraged from posting! Most of the people here are nice and even if your question has been asked and answered before, they will give you an answer or at least a link to the relevant thread.
One final suggestion: I see you do not have a signature yet. As you probably seen already many of us have exact model and ROM version of our phones in the signature. This is not just to brag about who got WM 6 or the latest AKU. When specific questions arise it saves us detailing whet we have in each post.
Well, enjoy your new phone!
As the guy said above youve pretty much ensured you have the right attitude dude
To add i would recommend filling out which network you use and what country you are in, they are in the profile options menu.
Welcome to xda-devs!
As levenum and mrvanx said you are on a good way. I strongly advise you to use a signature with details concerning your device and its setup as levenum said. Some people even provide list of software they use in there. It makes troubleshooting of your problems easier. Have a fun with your device and welcome!
Thanks guys and gals.
so, after reading through numerous threads and topics, i decided to give flashing my device a try. i printed off the instructions from a few topics, and downloaded all the files beforehand so i wouldn't have to worry about opening and closing Firefox in between steps to check instructions. sat down, and within an hour and a half my phone went from the Cingular 2.25 IPL/SPL 2.25.11 GSM and the 2.25.11.1 OS to SIM and CID unlocked running the T-mobile 2.26, with the 2.47.11 radio, and the Xplore 1.1 OS. was no hastle at all, really. followed the prompts, and played halo till i heard the phone beep at the windows mobile setup screen. figured it was best as then i wouldn't panic if it hung up at a certain percentage for a few minutes while installing anything.
my phone feels like an entirely different animal, and i like it very much!
the information that i found and followed led me to work on my device with the confidence that i would not brick this thing. i figured if i followed the directions of those who have done it numerous times before, i'd be hard pressed to be led awry. the _ONLY_ part of the whole process that i felt lost about what choosing which WM6 rom to put on it. seems like that's just a bit of personal trial and opinion though. from looking at the device setups in many of the senior member's sigs, i found xplore to be a popular choice, so yet again. do as the masters do.
thanks again for all of your expertise and contributions to this site. this site is directly responsible for turning my great new phone into even more of a fun/exciting/productive tool in my life.

Choosing right version of the ROM for the device is something that is entirely dependant on individual needs of the user. Most people advise to read their corresponding threads to get as much info about theose ROMs as possible. You can see what problems others had as well as solutions/fixes for these. There are many peple still asking - what is the best ROM? They should ask themselves: What do I need? first.
And in case of WM6 as of yet most available ROMs are betaversions (at least for Hermes) and it is therefore probable that some functionality will be missing/buggy. People tend to ignore that when making decisions. That especially applies to cooked ROMs that may omit certain functionality on purpose.
The moral is: if you think (sentient beings are welcome there) and know what you want/need you are on good way to enjoy your stay here and not harm your device.
Welcome aboard Min.
As the others have mentioned. You are on a great start. Myself spent probably 2 weeks of solid reading on here before I even posted a single question. Cause of this I was able to get a fast response and not flammed.
mim37204 you have started right and I wish you the best of luck with your 8125. Welcome to xda-developers!!! If I can ever help just PM me.

this is my first post on this forum, and I've just acquired a Kaiser - my first pocket PC. I'm with Orange, and I've been installed the HTC home plugin, audio manager and black theme. This has vastly improved the look IMO, but I'm wondering what's the benefit of flashing the ROM?
From what has appeared on other threads, there does seem to be an element of risk involved, so there must be a good reason taking that risk.
tia
Hey,
Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new Kaiser.
Read the Wiki first and then read read read read read all the posts you can, then read them again.
This one is a another must read:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332438
I have read almost every thread since I got here, and since I have joined I know I have spent 20 hours a week reading and sorting and have yet to pose a question, because this community prefers for newbies to educate themselves so we can avoid having multiple threads concerning the same issues.
The benefits to flashing a ROM are to numerous to cover in one post, especially without you acquiring some knowledge first.
Different ROMs have different attributes, and without the knowledge to fully understand a lot of the different aspects, you can brick your new piece of tech.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Loot at the top menu bar. See the donate link? The community would really appreciate it if you hit that link and contributed whatever you can afford.
Where else can we go and get so much knowledge? No where. So I know the Admins, Mods and members would really appreciate your support.
I Admin on several message boards ( not affiliated here though) and you wouldn't believe the costs involved and since xda helps so many of us, I really believe we should do what we can to help back.
If money is tight, even a dollar or a euro would be appreciated.
I have lurked here a bit, originally joining a while ago to see what was possible with my XDA, but got rid of it before becoming very active. Now I am back with a WING and prayer, and technicaly still qualify as a NOOB.....
Here are my thoughts on the NOOB issue.
1. This is like a big party that we NOOBS just crashed. We show up and complain about the music, or the booze, when in truth we ought to be damn glad we are at the party at all.
2. There is an answer to almost every question buried somewhere in these forums, and if you cannot or will not search for it, then you are in the wrong place. This includes other phone model forums by the way. Don't search the Herald forum only ad then give up if there is no answer. Dig into other HTC forums and you will be surprised how many of the issues you have are already covered there.
3. This may be a personal belief, but it really pisses me off to see people encounter 1 bug and post that the ROM sucks and they are reverting. I view our collective roles as beta testers. Don't stop at 1 bug- actively seek out as many as you can so the next ROM is that much closer to perfect. I have a major issue with the ROM I am using now, but I reflash it and dig deeper anyway.
4. You will and should get flamed (or at least warmed up) for posting questions that have been answered 100,000 times before including in the post right above yours. The Chefs in the forum spend hours or even days and months cooking up these ROMS for our benefit. They are not paid to do this, though they should be (and Ihave sent donations to several). The point is, we can all spend 30 minutes going through the forum reading it all to see if the issue we have uncovered is already discussed before posting a question.
5. If you want the most out of this site, spend some effort, not only searching, but documenting. Posting you have a crash is not helpful unless you can add information like what other programs you installed (card or device), what you did to the create the issue, and how to recreate it. Then the ROM Chefs can more quicly cook up solutions.
6. Credit those who help or provide. It is human nature to appreciate being thanked or recognized- see my signature? Without those three names my Wing would be chained to the T-Mobile default ROM. Oh yeah, while on the subject- DO NOT SELL anything from this site.
Just my 2 cents....
Yes you are right.
We all started as noobs and now we yell at noobs.
BUT MAYBE the noobs from today are a little different to noobs in earlier day??????
I READ 1 year without any posting NOT EVEN when i got something to work. BECAUSE it didn´t matter if I posted. Because it was useless at all.
There are so many people out there working really hard - they don´t need another "damn i want it in red not green...."
There was a time when everyone believed each other... When the cook stated "I will find a solution" then everyone waited for this. and didn´t mentioned it again and again...
BTW I will close the thread. WE don´t need another OFF topic "How2discuss"
I wrote an announcement in HOW2.... and maybe we can start working on devices again and not on generel human beeing problems. The world is getting worse...
BUT your statement should be read by everyone!
IT is good and it is quite good to see people thinking the same....
Thanks
Ok i'm new to the pda phone software customization, and the acronyms nd short hand has got me turned around, upside down and backwards.... i've been reading about the cooked roms and apps, and it all looks cool and i'm psyched about being able to get rid of the ATT rom on my tilt but how to go about doing it all can be quite confusing..... PLEASE HELP! i'm lost
thx in advance
Read the wiki and spend time reading these threads - it's all here. Start with the ROM Upgrading section - people have spent a lot of time laying it out for you. I got from where you are to cooking my own ROMs with just the information provided. Once you've read all that, if you are still having trouble, feel free to PM me.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
kewell... it will prolly take some time considering i'm on a borrowed puter with a borrowed wifi connection, but i will give it a shot and see what i can come up with
oh look, someone made this just for you, title says it all.
to be honest, I know we harp on people, but knowledge is the key, without it your bound to screw your phone up. Read my sig... This is truely all you really need to get your phone flashed and even fixed if you think it's bricked. I can't say 100% that it won't happen, but I would say that if you read this and search through the threads for any questions that you may come across, you should be ok. It seems over whelming but it's easy.
Sticky: Have a question? Read this before posting! All answers here (see post 3 for FTP lnk)

I was scared at first.
read the wiki..it really helps i remember i had my tytnii for a few months before i actually decided to flash and i remember searching everything about it and reading all the relevent posts/stickies to grasp a good general knowledge so i dont have to search and stuff while i flash...its better to know beforehand
