Is my motherboard buggered? - Off-topic

I have a problem that only the best of the best IT technicians here might be able to help!
Please don't direct me to Microsoft because they cannot help with this as I think my problem is hardware.
I will explain: All of a sudden ALL 6 USB ports on this computer I maintain stopped working completely and I mean completely! Lights show on memory sticks but they are steady lights. No amount of driver uninstall and registry cleaning works. Tried several flavours of linux and nothing! There is no message on screen, no ping sound, no unrecognized hardware message. It just sits there doing nothing. No USB anything works: keyboard, mouse, memory sticks, pdas, no dice.
I've run HP helpdesk software in it and it does not detect any hardware fault. Updated bios, chipset drivers, all the works... and nothing!
Is there any trojan that could have buggered the bios? Is there a hardware too that could test host controllers health?
Would love if any of the ever so very smart techs here could shed a light on this problem.
Don't you love IT?

Have you tryed looking for a USB setting in the bios?
In my bios there are usb legacy support and somthing else. And they have to be enabled for the usbs to work.
BTW: this wasn't supposed to sound n00bish.

Yea! Been there, done that! I knew it was enabled there because I made sure of that before when it was first deployed, but, just in case a naughty user had found a way around my password protected bios and changed it to disabled, I've checked it again.
But thanks for caring to put in your 2 cents.
Cheers!

So the usb's are getting power?

Yes, apparently so. But I don't have a clue as of how much power they should be getting. What is the standard? How do I measure it?

The power from a usb port is about 5 volt
You can find out the pins to test here:
http://pinouts.ru/Slots/USB_pinout.shtml

Thanks Flyboy. Shouldn't you be tucked up in bed now, being as you are only 13? The oldies here should take care of the kids!

Thanks. I bought some new walking boots as well. Regatta ones from GO Outdoors for £29.99.
I'm wearing them now.

LOL! Great price! Don't go to bed wearing them, never mind how great and trendy they are!

another yungen here (15) but do you have access to the inside of the computer easily because it might be worth checking everything is in there properly because if its getting power but no data transfer sounds like something has come loose inside but then if it is it will all be at circuit level, so probably no fix but if you could easily see loose wires at least you would know that was what it was.

LOL. Are the usbs on board or connected to the front panel usb socket?

i was thinking the same thing i know my mate was stupid enuf to glue a massive hub on the front of his computer and not plug it in and he wondered for years y it didn't work he only found out when he went to throw it out!

Thanks Slaming.
I did take it apart and check for loose connections broken bits but nothing seems unusual. Two front USB ports are connected to motherboard throught long wired connector. The other 4 at the back are connected directly to the board.
HP online diagnostic tools say everything is fine but still nothing!
Good night! I'm off to catch up with some beauty sleep! Older people need more time to recharge.

Depressing news... my PC fried...

Hey guys... As some of you may know, my desktop has been acting funny...
Today I reinstalled windows... after an update, the BIOS wouldn't post... I checked it out and plugged in the SLI auxilary plug to see if it wasn't getting enough power... next thing I saw when I turned it on was sparks and smoke...
My PC turns on but it's not detecting any harddrives... the smoke came from the harddrives... I'm pretty sure at least ONE of them is completely fried... and either the others also fried or the motherboard's ATA channels are fried...
Either way, that's a HUGE data loss... including most of my kitchen files. :-( I'm very sad right now because that means that my personal computer is done for... all my pictures and stuff are gone... everything I have ever worked to make... all my stuff...
*sigh* Well... you probably won't be seeing much from me for a while... I won't have the money to buy anything to replace the burnt out parts any time soon. The CleanROM final was stored in my external drive, so at least that SHOULD be safe... it was also plugged in to my desktop, though... so I'll be praying on that one.
I'm really bummed out...
You got a paypal? I'm sure people here would be more than happy to help you replace it.
Aah, i had the same thing. So %#$%ed up. But it'll be ok!
An USB drive wont spark if your PC does. I saw many of these cases in my profession, USB drive always survives, so im quite sure itll be ok.
Poor ivanmmj. I know the feeling. It sucks.
And than you think, why don't I take backups...

Hey bro,
Donation on the way, it's all of the funds currently in my paypal account. A lot of it was from users that donated to my Open Touch rom. It might not be a lot but I think its a start.
Good luck bro,

Hey guys. I'm thankful for the donation. I can't really take your money, though. I'd feel weird taking it. I didn't earn it. But I really appreciate the thought!!! I'll be returning the funds in a few minutes.
How does that happen? I've only heard of that once and it was because he shoved an agp8x card in a 4x slot. Was the card only half way in or something?
My motherboard has a MOLEX connector that provides extra power to the motherboard when using SLI. I think my mobo was just going bad.
BTW: I will return the donation on my break. Currently at work and don't want to pull up personal information logged in here.
My PC was acting ... weird too last week. Finally I realized (by replacing various componets from another PC) the power supply was bad, when I replaced it everything was OK.
Try to put the hard drives into another PC, they shouldn't be able to fry it.

Removed both cameras!

I removed both cameras on the first day I got my Diamond. I've been looking through the service manual before and felt primed.
Beforehand I want to tell you I did this already to my Magician and my Hermes - easy like swinging compared to the following.
After nearly 2h everything was put together again (I spare you the dirty and sweaty details). Before I switched on again I already thought about posting here something like "don't do it... it's cumbersome". Ok, then I switched on.
Booting up just fine . Since I touched those sensitive antennae cables I tried my SIM-PIN, works. WLAN & BT, works. Navi (GPS) no signal!
During the next tremulous 4h I tried "everything". Cutting it short: there was a conducting patch grounding the GPS antenna cable . I pushed that cable 5nm (there's actually no room left within the housing - as long as the cameras are still in) below and it all worked again.
To sum it up: don't do it! I mean it: DON'T DO IT. If you're a reckless person - seek some other "joy".
Why am I posting in ROM dev.: Maybe someone has too much time and wants to save me some storage space and wants to cook me a ROM without camera stuff OR someone is in need of a tester for special software (e.g. 1st torch software for Magician needed the camera, my own software later on didn't need a camera and was much more lean and fast).
PS: If you still wonder why I actually did that -> company policy.
Dont know if i should laugh or cry... or go to bed -.-
Couldn't you just spray paint over the camera lenses or put scotch tape on them?
I don't know what to say... other than WTF!
@techdave: You'll be asked "R U carrying a camera-cellphone with U?" at the plant entrance. If the camera is "only" blinded they could get nitpicking and say there still is a camera. But I can "lordly" answer "No".

Haha only temporarily, he can put them back when he quits because he gets sick of a Diamond with no camera.
@racerx_: Don't exaggerate. It's neither that expensive nor is it maimed (luckily). There's been always little use for these cheap CMOS sensors for me.
hey, do your company guards know that you can bring your cameras in separate pocket and then reassemble it back at the facility? ;-)
Carrying the cameras would violate company policies itself - no matter whether in conjunction with a suitable device or not. Technically you'd also bring a USB-Cam, LAN-Cam and whatever cam.
I've got nothing more than a usual cell phone with added holes. Would this be violating? Almost every cell phone has got bluetooth capability. So what about bluetooth cams? Ooops. Is every (BT-)phone now violating the above policy?
What are you on man? Whatever it is its kicking in awesome.

I guess the policy is not to carry cameras, otherwise the policy would probably have been not to carry any communication device. Carrying a device with holes but with no camera's would be acceptable then. If not, you'd also have to remove the BT and the WiFi, since there are probably cameras out there that can communicate with BT or WiFi. If you are going to remove that, please take pictures (if you still can without the camera)? LOL
How did you move the GPS grounding cable a stunning distance of 5 nm? Is that cable fixed enough not to vibrate back while using the device?
I must say, I should go to sleep, did not cry, but felt a joy while reading your thread. Nice one! Thanx

Well, 5nm were of course disproportionate. But yes, the cable is bendable. Although I wouldn't push it more than needed. Till now it didn't resume position because my device still knows where it is (although I don't know all the time).

I would be lucky if we were allowed to use phones with *removed* cameras. We have to prove, that it was a cameraless device from the beginning (like in: go to shop, buy without camera). Not sure if there's a official (i.e. AT&T) version of the diamond without camera.
(oh, and I regularly disassemble my smartphones when they get sick, nothing to worry about)

TV Out

Anyone know where to get the TV out cable?
Google 73H00274-00M
I believe that's the cable as it has the extra USB connector to charge the phone while it's outputting the video.
I think this si it. YOu may want to email the seller and confirm tho.. http://www.amazon.com/OEM-HTC-Out-Cable-ACT100/dp/B002OOZDSE
I think that cable is mini usb not micro
Correct that is mini not micro, cable will not work. But what about the combination of http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002OOZDSE/ref=oss_product and
http://www.banggood.com/Wholesale-Micro-Male-To-Mini-Female-Usb-Converter-Adapter-Cable-p-11269.html
I think $20 bucks is worth the try.
That won't work either... the adapters only push through the standard pins, not the special pins used by HTC for their TV out...
dammit
i need to get 6 of these cables....

one for each TV in the house
Seriously I need this... with the skyfire browser this will be the most useful cable ever. No more hooking up the laptop to watch last week's shows that I missed.
I have heard from wirefly that verizon wireless will give it out in a month..
But what I dont like is that there is no dedicated output port in incredible .. (ie its a matter of time when your phone will get discharged ).. So this thing will be useful only for quick preview on TV(like done for camera).
they could make a cable with an inline micro female to charge simultaneously
do not buy the ACT100 cable it does NOT work with the incredible. the slot is like the same as the HTC HD so it will not fit.

According to this video HTC explained that the TV-Out cable has an extra Micro USB port on it that allows the device to be charged while having the TV-Out cable connected as well. Really hope we get this cable in stores soon as I'd love to try this feature!
Correct you will be able to charge as its plugged in.
I just really hope that the dev who made the app to sync a Wii remote with Android comes up with the HTC fix. It would be so nice to have all of these game emulators on your phone that you can play with a Wii remote on your TV or anywhere there is an RCA connect.
Off-topic: There is a bluetooth controller that supposedly works with HTC Sense 2.1 devices I am considering purchasing, the MSI BGP100. I dont much care for it, but it supposedly works according to the dev website. It uses the app Gamepro on the market. Id much rather use the Zmote, but Ill probably just wait for Wiimote support on the Incredible.
On-topic: VZW warehouses dont even have them in stock. As in, they are still awaiting mass-production apparently. Fullfilment Inventory= 0. A few HTC events have had the cable being demoed but not for purchase. Good god how I long for one! Like many of you I have also scoured the interwebs for one with no success. Outside of bumping into a htc rep, looks like we might just have to hurry up and wait fellas.
Yea, just as everyone else i want one bad!!
It is not listed on their parts site yet either. Even though a lot of stuff there is back ordered.

Why hasn't anyone produced a cheaper alternative yet? I know it's not a common connector, but the phone has been out for a long time now. Any ideas? Thanks.

i hate that phones/laptops use proprietary ****...
but i guess that's where the money is so its stupid not to from a business standpoint.
thats why I always like nokia and htc,,
they would make a top shelf unbranded universal device.
no bs chargers, or batteries, or no mem slot, internal battery etc...
they give you a completely unbranded, un tainted device that actuall does everything...
not the almost everything that these cell phone companies do..
they cant give you everything in one phone because then you will never buy the new one they are selling.
so all that considered the dell streak starts to look pretty damn good...
atleast until the HD3 is released.
I would never have bought this if my HD2 didnt suffer touch screen death.
had dual boot super tech wm 6.5.5 touch rom with froyo 2.2 bluetopia rolling.
It was best of both worlds..
made my nokia n97 seem like a toy.
now the Dell streak has done that even with the HD2..
Extremely impressed!

Due to the formatting that post was ridiculously hard to read as it just didn't flow.
I agree that paying £20+ for what is supposedly an open standard plug (PDMI) is a bit excessive however it's a sellers market when people are early adopters. In time we will find that the plugs will become available cheaper cables will be produced, I believe members on XDA-Developers have already sussed out the pin-out for the cable, they just need the plugs.
I have been trying to source some however as of yet haven't had any luck, second I find some I'll be making cables like they're going out of fashion.

You can get an adapter for the USB headset, but the one that works with a headset with microphone is quite expensive. Besides, it is a real pain, carrying it around, trying not to lose it, etc. And the strange thing about the Touch Pro2 is that sound through the speakers is much better than through headphones.
Really? Not if you steal one.... Lol
Second... Shouldn't that have been a question you asked yourself before you bought a $400 proprietary device?

Exactly, the Touch Pro2 has the best hardware keyboard around and music wasn't my first priority. So I got it and still use it as a business phone. Every device has some drawbacks, as mentioned by others, if they made them almost perfect, why would you think of upgrading early?
keep an eye out for the samsung galaxy tab aswell it uses pdmi connector so should work on the streak, you can also get tv out cable

Looks like someone may have found an alt source for cables. They expect a sample from their supplier next week and may be making a bulk order shortly there after - last I heard it was 3 cables, AC adaptor, car adaptor = $30.

No - that is NOT what I reported.
That USB charger does work with the Streak - but you need to use the Streak's USB cable to connect it.
The iPad has a completely different USB cable to the Streak ! The cord that comes with the car charger is to fit the iPad, not the Streak - so you can just throw it in the bin.

The picture showing the Dell Strea sync cable on the website linked above seems to indicate in its caption that the same cable could be used for a Zune HD (I say seems as I don't read Korean).
Would someone be able to verify that a Zune HD uses PDMI (and the same 30-pin connector) and so possibly ZUne cables may be an alternative?

I posted a solution here without having to look for new cables or sodering usb chargers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10634108&highlight=car+charger#post10634108
Basically, it seems that firmware dictated how the usb cable charged. Rooted my 1.6, and flashed up to Stock 2.2 released by Dell for its unlocked units. I'm unsure if the earlier versions (2.1) would work too. Anyhow, no longer had any problems and could charge in my car just fine without overheating. Make sure whatever usb car charger you get, that the port has at least 1A of juice coming out. Good luck!

No - that is NOT what I reported.
That USB charger does work with the Streak - but you need to use the Streak's USB cable to connect it.

[Q] Solder More Memory On Motherboard

Hey guys,
So I wanted to know if it is possible to replace and solder new memory on the G1's mother board (replace) ???
I love my G1 and all, but I just want it to be able to push a bit more...
If it is at all possible, I will get started on it right away and post my progress...
I'm open to all suggestions...except buying a new phone =P
good luck!
this will be amazing if you can do it!
i am holding a g1 motherboard in my hand and im not sure how you could,
or even if you did will it still work
i'll check back on your progress because i love the G1! i cant find a better looking
phone anywhere (my opinion) and if we could just add more speed and memory
this would be by far the best phone out there!
good luck!
It 's not like the old Comodore Vic 20 piggyback memory mod
Yeah, I dought it would be worth it. I use to work for a company that would populate surface mount boards back in the mid 90's. You need a fine point soldering iron just to solder something onto a board. You then need an IR or hot-air machine to remove a components with more than a few legs.
It takes a steady hand to work with the 'larger' surface mount components. Over the decades components gotten smaller and fine pitch has gotten finer(the number of legs per inch). Many components have gone BGA witch means that the legs don't even stick out, they are between the board and components. Many times reworking BGAs two different solders are used with two different melting points.

Why don't you follow one of the de-bricking guides? Unless he threw your phone hard against a wall, those guides should help you. Nevermind the memory soldering, but you'd have your G1 back...

Appreciate the help, but it's been "hard-bricked". No coming back from that unless it's with JTAG. And I really can't find any repair shops around my area that offer that kind of service =(
Apparently my friend messed up something with the root and went back to Android 1.0 and then flashed the wrong SPL.
Unless someone knows of a way other than JTAG or replacing the motherboard, I'm gonna have to get myself another phone.
I've been 'phoneless' for almost a week.. I hope no one on XDA goes through losing a beloved device and then not having a phone at all...
And I can't just go and grab me a nice phone either.. horrible finances at the moment (unfortunately)....
