LED Flashlight - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
Has anyone been able to access the LED flash on the Nexus one without rooting? I would like to create a flashlight app of my own to do this, but I have no idea where to begin.

from the market n1 torch.

I love incorrect information said with such confidence, lol.
n1 torch, as has been mentioned, is root only. Heck, if you go to download it, it SAYS it. Beyond that, unfortunately no, at this moment from my research, you'll need root access to gain control of the LED. Sorry

Re the N1 Torch, which i love btw, is anyone else having problems with the widget?
Most of the time its perfect, but sometimes it appears to lag by ALOT, ie you press it multiple times to try and turn it on, then a few minutes later in your pocket it starts flashing on and off while in your pocket.

i prefer the color flashlight one, i think thats what its called, it doesnt use the led it lights up the screen itself, much brighter and wider light imo
use it while sneaking up to bed after late night raids in warcraft so i dont wake the g/f

I used that one last night to read, I see what you mean about its much wider, but its definitely NOT brighter than the LED, although that only lasts for like a minute before it needs to cool down.

Darchdroidv2.7 - Light sensor and Market update Notification issues

So I have had this light sensor issue since .6.4 release and since until 2.7 there was always something broke with the ROM, I decided to stick with .3 which was stable with light sensors and still had couple of quirks which I really didn't care much about (mms, video ...) as long as light and GPS were perfect!
Now, the issue with the light sensor. You will know if the light sensors are working properly during the installation; once you flash the ROM and reboot the phone, right at the end of (blue) animation the bottom lights light up and the charging light turn red/green, if it is connected to charger. And it does this every time I install 2.6.3 but not since then! ( I can now install 2.6.3 on top of 2.7 and light sensors still works like a charm!)
So what really bothers me with the light sensor? Is it really that important? Well, the way my phone light sensor works is, it turns on only when its dark around and never times out as it should! It never turns on in the day light, you couldn't activate it even by pressing any the buttons at the bottom! The issue is two fold:
1. Light stays on all the time during the night when I am using the phone and drains battery faster
2. Though I really don't care much for not lighting up in the day/bright light, it annoys me that this most loved ROM isn't how it needs to be!
While I am still talking about lights, I think I should mention track ball notifications as well. Even though I have my track ball notifications are turned on, I am yet to see them working! It was randomly mentioned in some thread that it doesn't work! But I miss the point that why put it in the settings if it doesn't work?
I also have issues with Market update notifications, I have used other HTC based custom ROMs in the past and had no issues with notifications but with this I almost never got any!
So far I have tried many trial and error methods to see if it fixes:
- I have flashed ROM repeatedly few times, just to see if it fixes
- I have done complete wipe around 3 times and re-installed
- Rebooted phone several times in addition to above procedures
- In the half way somewhere I realized that I wasn't running Darch's recovery so now I have that too and tried the above procedures
When I was on .4 for a while and having the same issue with lights, some one recommended to take .so files from the other working ROM and patch it to the existing one and it never really worked for me.
With all this, I am not claiming that these issues exists with this ROM in general, it could be me! I could be doing something wrong! That's why I have tried to explain in detail what I have done and what is not working.
What am I looking for? - Help!! If anyone have came across these issues and able to successfully solve and make their phones work or if you have any idea about how to go about these issues, I would like to hear from you guys!!
Darchy, I love your work and this ROM ( that's why I am trying to figure out solution to these issues ) but at times you are very quick at dismissing people, yes some can be ignorant but we are not living in the perfect world!
Thanks in advance for everyone and thanks Darchy for this excellent ROM (it almost killed my desire to switch to some crappy carriers with huge bills to get Nexus One!)
i believe, as far as lights goes, thats just how the ROM is built. not just this one but all ROMs. near the earpiece is the light sensor. if its bright out, theres no point in having the bottom lights come on, youll be able to see the buttons. when its dark, the bottom lights will come on. its basically a battery save kind of thing. no point in having something on, if you really dont need to use it. as far as market notifications, i havent recieved any updates as far as apps goes so i cant tell wether or not they work.

Please read the post carefully and respond, I have made an effort to explain in detail.... the light never goes off in the dark! If I am reading an article for 20 minutes, it stays on for 20 mins, is that battery saving??

Well, it works but not the way it needs to be! It doesn't work at all in the bright light or day light but in the dark or in the low lit area it keeps on as long as the screen is on! It never times out if it is dark.

so you are saying the light sensor is working because the keys and trackball are lit up in the dark? pretty sure that is the point of the sensor yea? also find a hero rom with working trackball notifications, it has never worked. as far as the market notifications i have gotten 3 or 4 update notifications.
not trying to be a ****, ive had my fair share of issues but after about 4 wipes and reinstalls everything is working great.

which was what i was trying to say. if your in the dark, of course the bottom lights are gonna be on, and stay on. i dont think ive ever used a ROM where the bottom lights have time out while in the dark.

Glad I just saw this message before going to bed! I am downloading now..... will update in here soon done flashing..... thank you!
Ok...... lights are working perfect!!! Thanks alot!
I assume this is still incomplete ROM and you need to do lots of tweaks? Just couple of things!
- I don't see 3D gallery anymore and can't sync with Picasa!! I have lots of pics on Picasa!
- Linpack is averaging inbetween 2 and 3 MFLOPs and it used to average around 4.7!
That's all I could catch for now! I am sure it will get better, will use GPS in the morning and let you know if it has any issues!
Thanks again for all your work! Good night!

oh, lol, i removed jit completely, i replaced 3d gallery with the 2d one as its way more stable imo. If u want jit in this i could add it back in for ur benchmarks, but imo thats all its good for until froyo.

I feel honored darchy! LOL so with 2d gallery I can't integrate Picasa? I never had any issues with 3d gallery!
I would be glad to test it or run this version if you can add jit and 3d gallery! LOL let me know! I'm kinda addicted to both of those along with your ROM. You do great job!

[APK] Official Thread for Keep The Lights On 1.3 (Free Version)

If you want to donate, or more features, check out Keep The Lights On Pro.
What does it do?
Keep The Lights On is a simple app that performs one function. It keeps the LEDs behind the buttons on a Captivate or similar phone on while the screen is on.
That seems stupid, why would anyone do that?
Well, try finding those buttons in the dark. While the stock ROM turns on the LEDs when you touch the screen, the i9000 based ROMs do not. In addition, most i9000 ROMs have a timeout of 3 seconds.
Doesn't that waste battery?
Depends on what you mean by waste. So first you have to understand the scale of battery consumption I'm talking about. LEDs, especially surface mount ones, draw very little power. How little? Assuming typical LEDs, we're talking 5 milliamps at 3.3 volts. Given that there are 4 LEDs, that means the total power consumption is 0.005 * 3.3 * 4 or 0.066 watts. The CPU consumes between 100 and 1000 milliamps, again at 3.3 volts meaning it uses between 0.33 and 3.3 watts. That's 5-50 times as much power, and that's before adding in the backlight, radio, etc. While yes, technically this uses a little more power, the scale is so small that for all intents and purposes it isn't going to make a difference in your life. Seeing the buttons clearly though, that takes frustration out of your life. Seems like a reasonable trade off.
Does it work with other BLN things like Blinky or BLN Pro?
Yes. This uses a different way to handle the BLN than both those apps. In fact it only requires a rooted ROM with these lights to work. So that means it should work for i9000, Fascinate, Captivate, Vibrant, etc. This should even work with the stock ROM given it is rooted.
If it works for all those phones, why is this just in the Captivate Section?
Well, I only have one phone right now to test with. That is my personal Captivate.
Why are you giving this away for free? Are you drunk? Does it use ads?
To answer the second question first, sometimes but not right now. This is free because I like making people's lives easier. I do not believe in advertisement based products, so you'll never see that from me. If you want to give something back, consider the donate button or buy the Pro version.
I installed it but didn't the app in my list of apps. Is it broken?
Short answer, no. This is a widget based app. Simply add the widget and click it to change the light behavior. You can even remove the widget and it'll remember your preference when you start up. That said if you uninstall the app you'll loose the behavior.
I just got an invalid signature error. What do I do?
This is my fault, there was an early version that I didn't sign correctly. Simply uninstall it manually before installing this version from the market.
What other issues exist?
Well there's a few:
I've had one report of the lights flashing instead of staying solid when turning the screen on. If this user hits one of the buttons the lights will stay on. I'm working on a way to fix this, I haven't found the cause as of yet.
There's a superuser notice every once in a while. This is easy to turn off in the superuser app, and will be fixed in the pro version.
There's been one report of clicking a link in andchat causes the lights to go out. I haven't been able to reproduce it yet.
If you find a problem not on this list, feel free to let me know.
What other features are in this app?
None; however, I'm always open to new ideas. Be warned though, they may go into the pro version.
How do I get this app?
From the market, or here:

Suggestion
I have not tried your app yet, but I have a suggestion.
If you could turn on or off each individual LED, rather than all on or all off, then you could consider using each button to indicate something different.
Home - new email
Menu - new text
Back - missed call
Maybe you can even make them blink?

What would be the point of that with this app.....it turns the lights on when the screen is on, if the screen is on then you have those same notifications at the top of the screen already.
Though I guess it might be useful for some if those additions were made to Guardian Bob's BLINKY APP.
Support for Galaxy Tablet
First off, thanks for your efforts!! This is exactly what I'm looking for.
Any chance you will be able to support this on the galaxy tablet? I am happy to help in any way I can - I am a developer (though I haven't done much android development). I have a rooted device with busy box... if there's anything I can do to help you figure out this device, please let me know!
Crazy me, I would honestly like to be able to DISABLE these lights. I watch movies and do other things a lot in the dark, and these bright white lights randomly popping up on my phone are very distracting. Since they can be turned ON manually, does that mean perhaps they can be turned OFF as well?

Lovin it. One of the pet peeves of this device was the short duration on the home keys.
How about this as as Pro suggestion (if possible):
Control brightness level when LEDs are on.
My cuz has a DINC and i absolutely LOVE the brightness of his home keys. Super easy to see. Possible?
works on Korean Galaxy S shw-m110s, maybe the least compatible of the SGS versions, cheers.
Working fine so far on my Vibrant running Nero v5.
Good job, but i was wondering if there's an opposite app, one that turns off the led buttons even when the screen is touched? What for? For reading ebooks in the dark, the led buttons hurt the eyes even when the screen has been adjusted to the lowest light level. Thank

FYI -
I'm working on tasker support for the pro version right now (well not right now, I'm taking a moment from that work to update people) but when I finish this I'll continue working on my beer, watching the Packers vs the Bears and keep working on adding tasker/locale support.
Mine stopped working, Not sure why. I have the widget and it will light up or un-light. But it will no longer keep the lights on. Any suggestions on figuring out why ?

just bought an incredible s. questions?

hi there. i bought this phone yesterday and it's great. i love it. best phone i've ever owned.
however i have a few niggling questions;
i find the touch buttons to be very difficult to see in sunlight. is there a way to brighten them? or are all the phones like this. my mother has a galaxy s and i feel her touch buttons are brighter.
is the power button meant to be so slim to the phone? i can find it hard to press sometimes.
secondly, how come my LED notification light only stays on for a short time when i receive a text? i would have thought it stayed on until the text was read, but when i get a text and don't notice for half an hour to an hour the LED isn't flashing. if i receive a text (and i'm there to notice it) the LED flashes. again, is this just my phone or everyones?
also, how safe is it to install the swype beta on your phone? and how safe is it downloading pdf's (accidentally, opened a link on a reputable train website) on to my phone over the 3G network?
and finally, not as important, but the standard version of angry birds seems to always lag/crash at startup. i don't know whether it's due to the ads, but i have to hit home before i am able to click 'start', and then the same again when the level loads up before i can move the birds. i've played rio and that seems fine.
OH, and one more thing. if i go from an area with good 3g reception to an area with poor 3g, and then back again, my phone takes a while to catch up, so i have to turn off mobile networks and then back on again to get 3g back. normal?
sorry for all the questions.
thanks. peace.

The Incredible S's capacitive buttons have a unique feature compared to other devices, they get to turn when you put your phone in landscape mode (only in one direction). In order to achieve this, they use a different method of illumination. What you may also notice is a kind of ghost of the buttons secondary positions beneath what is displayed in a round border if looked at at the right angle. However, it also gives the possibility to have nothing at all showing up when the lights are off giving it a cool look (I find ). Compared to other phones I've seen, I'd say that it's normal for the IS to have slightly less bright touch buttons.
is the power button meant to be so slim to the phone? i can find it hard to press sometimes.

The IS was given what some people call a very industrial look. Aside from the back cover, the phone is very minimal in the sense that nothing extrudes from it. The power as well as the volume rocker buttons are even the same colour as the body. All to give it that slab look. The volume rocker sticks close to the body too, and I'm sure your phone is perfectly fine. You'll get used to it

The reaction time not being immediate is normal, but how long do mean by "a while"? 10 seconds or 10minutes? I could only think of a radio problem if it's really bad. Could you share what version of android and what's your baseband version on your phone?

I think that other question has been answered so i will skip it.
LED notification i will only last for 5 minutes, so far i haven found out any ways to stretch up the time until we read the message or any other notification.
I think they set it to only 5 minutes properly of the battery drain?
Hope its help.

[Q] Ambient Display Randomly Turns On

What is everyone experiencing? I have a T-Mobile Nexus 6. I am running stock and not rooted. Apologies if this has already been covered, but I searched a couple of different ways and did not see anything.
Not sure what others are experiencing, but my Nexus 6 display will randomly wake into ambient mode even when I just have it sitting still on my desk or couch. There are no alerts that are driving it, so I am just wondering if others are seeing the same thing or if they have done anything with the settings to clear this issue.
I can't imagine that ambient display is a huge drain on the battery or anything, but it's not nothing. Plus it's distracting when it happens.
I've noticed mine coming on due to vibrations. I had it sitting on a minifridge next to my desk. I thought it was random too, but it turns out I was either knocking the side of my desk with my knee, or the fridge was kicking on/off.
Mine does it all the time. No movement to the phone or even around the phone. Hands no where near it. Just decides to wake up. I find the whole ambient display to be pretty annoying altogether honestly. Hoping devs can disable it and find a way to use the LED.
I saw a weird error message from LightFlow (which I installed and enabled to see what it would do). I wonder if this or other apps that are running in the background and potentially causing the screen wakes.
I will try uninstalling LighFlow to see if it improves the situation and report back with any news.
I think you might be right. I have the same problem but I didn't notice it when I first got the phone. I have installed lightflow and now that you mention it, this problem started soon after. So I just uninstalled lightflow and it already seems better.
When I installed that double tap to wake app it messed with ambient display and would turn it on, especially when the battery was low. I removed that app.
Since then I have also turned off ambient display because I found it fairly useless and feel it is using battery for very little benefit. If it flashed faster or kept flashing until I checked it I think I'd use it.
I turned it off because I had it sitting on a table with nobody touching the table and it kept coming on. I couldn't get light flow to get the light working unfortunately, hopefully there is a fix coming.

Mine does it all the time. No movement to the phone or even around the phone. Hands no where near it. Just decides to wake up. I find the whole ambient display to be pretty annoying altogether honestly. Hoping devs can disable it and find a way to use the LED.

root phone, install light flow, disable ambient display.
it's already been done.
i use light flow and it works perfectly, sans flashing LED but that seems hardware/kernel blocked.
It seems that LightFlow is what was causing the issue as I haven't noticed the screen waking since uninstalling it yesterday.

I'm definitely looking forward to getting the LED indicator working.

Ambient display is useless

I found that ambient display is useless.
I was thinking that whenever I got notification, the ambient display will lit the screen and then OFF ... then lit ... then OFF.
You know, kind of asking attention.
It is NOT.
It lit ONCE, then OFF forever, until I pick up the phone (of course).
The problem with this, if I leave the phone on my desk for quite long, I won't know if there was notification arrived, unless I pick up the phone.
So, what's the use of this ambient display?
Damn, LED notification would be much useful!

So you can either see the notification come in first time when it lights up. Or you can quickly pick the phone up to see if there are any notifications without it fully waking up.
LED is easier though!
I prefer they don't lit it on and off constantly because it is distracting when you are in a meeting and it drains your battery. Though having an option would be nice
Yeah, I agree it is a useless battery wasting feature (though the impact to battery is minimal). Thankfully the LED can be enabled with Light Flow even though that is flawed as well since the app will randomly get killed and the light won't work.
Ambient Display would be perfect if it flashed continuously until you check it and if it worked in priority mode, which it doesn't if you have priority mode set up like the old silent mode. If you don't want your phone making noise or vibrating but still need to see notifications it is pretty worthless.
you are dead on sir.

I was told Google is moving away from using led notification, but yet they designed a phone? with one built in but totally useless at this point. Hopefully the next update will address this.
Mine flashes continually until I check things... Every ten seconds or so. It is wonderful... Not sure what is up with your guys' one time notifications...
ambient display is alrite.... It doesn't work that well though. It does not consistently work when you pick up the phone. I would much rather have them activate the LED since it's already there.
you. me. and many more

I'm setting this gripe in many circles outside of xda hopefully they will address it in the next update. Lots of corporate people want that portion which was always a part of android and even non android phones of the past.

in all fairness, Moto made the phone, whether for Android Silver or whatever other reason, it wasnt designed ground up with Google or originally planned as a Nexus.
I like ambient. Works great for me. and being an Amoled display, only the pixels being used light up, so battery is minimal
users report otherwise.

Acording to the battery threads I've read, ambient display sucks battery.

Does the device wake up from deep sleep for it? If yes it sure does suck a lot of battery. Especially if it is supposed to flash up in intervals to remind you of the notification.

I just tested it... it flashes up every 30 seconds or so. As soon as as you click on it the screen is on without any delay. So I guess it screws your battery hard by making it wake up each time? It would mean that as soon as you have a notification your device would wake up every 30 seconds.
I can't get Lightflow to work at all. Do you need a kernel that has LED support?

I am just using the regular ambient feature built into the stock rom. I am encrypted, rooted with stock kernel on stock 5.0.1. I have not messed with any AOSP roms .

Rooted and use root access for the LED activated in Lightflow.
Lightflow screws up ambient tough. It constantly flashes as if it has an notification, even if it only shows the clock. This WILL kill your battery in my opinion...
Led notification will drain batttery fast?
Via my NeXus™ 7FHD on XDA Premium app
I actually like it more than Active Display. Active was much more sensitive to movements which for really annoying.

I don't know what settings you set to make it do that.
Light Flow doesn't do that here. Cooperates fine with Ambient.
I know there are people (Lightflow Dev) who are working on getting the built-in led working, and I think that's great. I wonder if there are any devs working on making Ambient Display more useful...? I'm going to shut off the Ambient Display today and mess around with an app I used to use on the Galaxy S called NoLed. It puts dots or icons on the screen and could notify me of anything... might be the ticket here.
