Replace signal bars with dbm level? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to replace the signal bars in the notification bar with a text based signal level showing the received level in dbm like it is in the status screen? Would be a lot more informative for me.
Thanks!

This sounds like a great idea, it doesnt seem like it would be too hard but I am really not sure.

Yes unfortunatly I couldn't find anything about it and do not know how.
I'd love to have the same thing for WiFi as well.

I agree, this would be far more meaningful than "bars."

Unidentified Icon (at least for me)

Hi all,
Sometimes i have an undocumented icon on the upper bar of my home screen, just left of the 3G icon. It looks like an eye with a small right-arrow under it. I can't find the meaning of it in the manual nor on the net..
Sometimes it's there, sometime it's not..
I'm a noob (that is, on smartphones), can anybody explain what it means?
another symbol
Hello,
I've got also an unidentified symbol sometimes.
It's a headset with a little music note in it.
I thought it was something for my headset, something for the A2DP.
But I use my headset a lot for music, and this icon is very sometimes present.

Is it anything like this Orange Icon?:

Mike
Yes, more or less....but mine is on the icon-bar..My S730 is unbranded by the way, network is 3G KPN (holland) .. any idea? Sometimes it just disappears, for no reason at all
Looks like webcam or to me.
Can it something be for a video call?
Maybe that a video call is possible.
Might be....i've tried all settings concerning both camera's/videocalls but nothing changed icon-wise..

3G issues

So I just got my Nexus One a couple of days ago. In most ways it's a great device. The screen is amazing and multitasking with IM and apps like Pandora and Rhapsody is a nice change.
However...none of this is all that great if it doesn't work very well as a phone! I live in Brooklyn, in an area marked on the T-mobile map as "Best 3g coverage". I've found that I get almost full signal with T-Mobile 3g if it's sitting on my desk in it's dock (and speed test at about 2mbit). As soon as I hold the phone in my hand (especially if my hand is on the bottom of the phone), the signal drops away by at least two bars, if not completely - dropping the data connection back to edge. If I walk about 15 feet away from the window and into my apartment, I often lose connection altogether.
If I put my T-mobile sim into my unlocked iPhone I get a steady 2-3 bars with EDGE throughout the entire apartment.
HTC are sending me a replacement Nexus and it should get here today or tomorrow.
My question is, should I expect an improvement with the new unit? How many of you are experiencing problems with the device in terms of 3g and general signal stability? Do you notice significant signal drop offs when holding the phone as opposed to having it docked or on a desk?
It's definitely a bit of a dealbreaker for me, and the problem seems way too widespread to just be a problem with my unit. Just wondering what the general experience is here?
Thanks.
By cupping my hands around the phone I can consistently lose one bar and regain it by letting go. This is while it's sitting flat on the table or by standing it up and holding it at the top with one finger.
You arent the only one having this issue, i am as well as many others.

yep. same **** happens to me when i hold my phone normally at the bottom.
Yup, even after the recent OTA update, it's been noted (on engadget as well) about how cupping the unit drops the signal strength.
There's hope this is a software patch fix, but it's looking like a hardware limitation.
Also voice your concerns here...

The more complaints they get, the more public it gets...the better chance we have of getting the issue fixed.
It's also has been noted over at tmonews...more exposure the better!

I have the same problem with my phone. It'll have 2-3 bars 3G while the phone is on my desk but drop to Edge whenever I use it to make a phone call or browse the internet. I called HTC about it and they're sending me a new phone, I'm hoping it was just a bad batch because not everone is experience this problem.
3G/UMTS/HSDPA flip to EDGE
In an area with maximum T-Mobile 3G coverage (as indicated by their map), I get:
* phone on the desk: 4 bars, HSDPA, -79..-81dBm 16..17 asu
* cradling the bottom of the phone: 3 bars, HSDPA, -97..-93 dBm, 8..10 asu
* cradling the top of the phone: 4 bars, HSDPA, -71dBm 21 asu
The phone is running CyanogenMod 5.0.2, which includes Google's OTA update that purportedly fixed the 3G issue.
It could be an issue with the antenna placement. A similar thing happens on my old GPRS 1G Nokia phone (that I have to use currently, my MT3g was stolen, bleh): when I hold it from the top, it drops from a full 7/7 bars to 1/7 bars, and when I hold it from the bottom, it jumps to 7/7 bars again. My guess is that the Nexus One has the antenna on the bottom, which is where it is most commonly held, so it loses 3G signal easily, leading more people to notice a problem.

The Nexus antenna is on the bottom and has been noted as an issue on some other threads.
Doctor. my arm hurts when i do this.....^^^^^<<<<>>>>>
then dont
I hope iphone 4 complainers don't see this thread
iPhone 4 is getting a lot of flack for exactly the same issue right now. the exact same thing with the N1 just isn't reported.

Don't worry since this is an old thread from last February!

This issue was all over the media, when it was news that is.
I am getting the same issue on the Nexus One which I bought yesterday brand new on eBay.. and I switched away from my iPhone 4 (which I still have, just inside the box) because of this.
I just spread my pinky and ring finger apart to expose the Bottom part of the phone right where the word HTC is located. Leaving this part slightly exposed clears up the issue no problem and reduces the signal attenuation caused by the hand.

[REQUEST] Radio Signal strength as a dB value

Is it possible to mod the radio signal strength to be represented as a numerical value (in dB say) as opposed to the graphical option that seems to be common in ROMs?
I was reading an article on AnandTech about the iPhone signal issues and the author of said article uses numbers in his 3GS to represent signal strength.
I just thought it might be pretty cool and a little different to what's been done so far.
im sure this would be possible in a mod similar to the battery notification as the network strength in dB is located in the about phone > status menu
My take on this topic:
I think it would suck the battery too much having to query the status each time. If it didn't update on a dime it would defeat the purpose of the mod.

I'm not sure how the system currently handles the signal strength notifications but I was led to believe it takes some samples and does a bit of average so the there is a delay in displayed signal status versus actual signal status anyway.
Maybe we wouldn't need to query that often? I assume the battery status works by flagging a change in the status rather than constantly querying?
Bump —=>)
This is available in CM7 under Cyanogenmod Settings>Interface>Status bar tweaks>Alternate signal display. If you wanted, I'm sure you could pull the relevant code from source.

Weird Logo next to signal strength on notification bar

I recently received my Nexus 6 from Sprint, and I love it in case you're curious.
But I see a No Smoking style sign up near my LTE signal strength in notifications. I definitely have fast internet speeds and clear call quality, so I don't think there is a connectivity issue. But this logo just isn't going away.
I'm coming back to Android from iOS so I have no idea what that icon means. Any help is appreciated.
Press the volume rocker and change the notification setting from None to All. You're in Do Not Distrub mode.
Thanks. Of course it is that simple.

Haha yea, I felt the same way about the star icon. When I found out it was the Priority Notifications mode I felt so dumb.

That's it. Couldn't take it any more. Its going back.

Why does Samsung have to change something thats beautiful from pure Android
Status bar: Whats with the stupid up/down arrows under the WiFi icon and the broadcast lines on the data icon. Does anyone care? It makes the icons look smaller and the status bar look really weird. Are the UI folks all blind? Why does the font on the status bar huge? If I enable battery percentage, thats half the width of the bar. On second thought, maybe they are blind. My N5 status bar looks absolutely beautiful.
Tweaks are nice...but: Its nice they provide some tweaks. I like the fact the phone call notification has mute ,vol, and end buttons. Nice touch but can't Samsung keep the material design in tact and add these features?
And for ****s sake, its Back, Home, and Task Viewer. Not the other way around. Sheesh.
Occasional heating of the phone (almost never happens with Nexus 5).
Horrendous battery. I think the battery life is same as my 1.5 year-old Nexus 5.
Great screen and awesome camera.
I wish they offer this phone in two flavors. Pure Android and Samsung Crap.
Sorry, had to vent.
I like the way the wifi icon is set up. And since I'm a right, the back on left is nice for me. Heating is much of a problem i noticed and battery lasts well for me. Have you cleared the cache partition?

Yes, that was one of the first things I did. Also, brightness is usually set between and 5 and 10%. The screen is very bright. So you actually find the up/down data arrows under the WiFi icon useful? How? All I always ever cared was whether I had a WiFi connection or how strong the signal was. Both were well represented in the Lollipop/Marshmallow implementations (filled in white with no discreet bars).

Yeah I've found it useful sometimes. When apps or webpages get stuck or slow, the indicater is useful to me in telling my phone's network usage.
I use the data symbols as well. Especially when uploading files to Google drive etc... Sometimes the uploads stop and the indicators help determine if it's the case. Hope they leave them there.
I love the arrows, as well. When I don't see them, I know it's time to kick my kids' tablets of the network...
I am very concerned with the heating issue. Something is drawing on my battery hardcore, which obviously increases heat. I have to power off, then back on to stop it. A standard reboot doesn't solve it.
Then get a nexus
