Since yesterday I have to go and manualy press refresh to retrieve the emails, before it was instant like a blackberry that everytime an email was sent to me it was received by my Nexus.
Account is the same and no changes have been made.
Any ideas?
i had those same problems this weekend, i did a reboot and it works fine since.

On the same note, this past week or so my favorite sports teams keep clearing themselves everytime close the window. Its fixed now but I'll tell you that it should correct itself over time like my problem.
Good to hear that let's see if it solves by itself, did the reboot twice and that didn't help.
Try checking your syncing preferences, my gmail stopped syncing and later I realized that I accidentally hit the sync on/off button on the homescreen power control widget. Its easy to hit when you have your brightness on low and are trying to turn it up.
Common problem that occurs, albeit rarely, on our phones. Go to settings, applications, manage applications, hit menu, filter, select "all", and clear the cache in gmail and gmail storage. Takes a little time for your emails to populate again, but syncing should work again.

@ swgbex you sir are great!
That was the issue, seems like I turn off the syncing by mistake. LOL!
Thanks !
I deleted Gmail, i found it to be to simple and disapointing. I found regular Email app to be equally as good as Gmail besides i can have other mail accounts in there.
It's super random with me.
Half the time my Nexus One gets email quicker than my iMac, but then there's times when my iMac gets it way quicker than the Nexus One. Either way, push email rocks
The Gmail app is a big pile of ****. You can't get to your outbox, it doesn't let you download some attachments, no copy/paste... I could go on and on. I pretty much just use the mobile gmail website now.

Yeah, and does anybody have the problem where only the first message in a conversation had live web links? All of my subsequent messages in a given conversation have non-clickable http links... sucks.

Menu - View labels - Outbox (am I missing something, or are you?)
The attachments are due to Android limitations (as far as I know) not really the Gmail app. Copy/paste, yeah that sure sucks that it is missing.
Djmcnz - I just opened a discussion with a few messages, and the very first (oldest) had a link, it worked. The newer messages had links that work as well.
Hmm, so does anyone get this:

PITA!
In mine all links remain active and usable.
i've got djmcnz's issue almost in every mail i send form the Mail app on my Mac (and only in sent mails).. but i guess that is not related to the links.. in these mails there wasn't any link!..
as you can see it cuts out some paragraph of the mail, and i can't understand the sense of that!
it is really annoying since i can't read my mail from my phone!
Okay, so it's a crap app... what are the alternatives for Gmail? Suggestions please?
Does the built in email app do gmail? Is it any good?
It shocks me that the two utter fails for Android are Market searches and Gmail... go figure...

Hehe, I thought this was obvious but maybe not:
Text in purple = quoted text from a previous email.
Links in quoted text / previous emails are not clickable. To click the link, open the email in the conversation that first had the link.
Yes, this can be annoying, but I just wanted to explain the behavior for people since it may not be obvious.

It's cut off because it's quoted text from a previous email. The Gmail app only shows the first 100 characters of a quoted passage to cut down on redundancy. There's no point in having the same passage over and over and over again in every single email of a thread. For long conversation emails, that would get extremely annoying fast. The creators of the Gmail app are going for a 'clean' interface, and rightly so.
If you want to see the full message, they're expecting you to look at the corresponding email in the conversation, since it's only a single click away:
Yes, it can be improved. And hopefully it will be in FroYo -- next month
Ideally, links in quoted passages WOULD be clickable, and the length of quoted passages would be user-configurable (100 characters, 200, 500, etc). (Most likely, there's probably a feature request about these issues on the official Android developer site already anyway.)
[Edit]: Here are a few I found:
Issue 1494: Gmail should allow seeing the entire email (headers, quotes text) - http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1494
Issue 1136: Gmail should allow editing text of quoted/forwarded emails - http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1136
Among others.
Go ahead and star them to show your support!
However, keep in mind: most other phones do not have threaded emails like we do. Imagine if every email in email chains/conversations were separate.
So to see previous replies you had to:
- exit the email
- scroll around
- find the date/time it was received
- open that corresponding email
- and hope it was the right one that you wanted.
This is how the iPhone operates, webOS etc, and various other phones.
Don't take threaded emails for granted Learn to use them.
.
thanks paul for the answers..
i already knew how quoted text is handled by gmail app, and i like it, because, as you say, it doesn't matter to show me the whole quoted text since i can just open the previous mail..
the problem is that in the mail of this screenshot, the first paragraph was NOT a quoted text, and was written by me as part of that mail that you can see..
that is the problem.. why does the gmail app recognize that part of text as quoted text?
in the web app it dosn't happen, and neither using gmail from the browser of my desktop computer..
i hope i explained it better..

I think this is a result of the way Gmail guesses what is and isn't quoted text. There's no one standard way of formatting or markup for quoted text, so the Gmail app has to try and guess what is part of your message and what is quoted text. Sometimes it gets it wrong and the web version of Gmail probably uses a more accurate detection scheme.
I notice this problem a lot when emailing Outlook and Blackberry users as both of those email clients use unusual formating for quoted text, and Outlook uses some horrible HTML markup. It gets worse when people include massive signatures in their emails.
can someone say if the problems pointed out in the latest posts are still present in froyo?
thanks

Noticed something yesterday with my POP3 Gmail account.
When I received an email, there's a link to download the entire message. I click it and it goes into a state that says it will download the rest of the message next time I receive email.
So, I hit the send/receive option and, sure enough, the entire message is loaded.
I finish reading the entire message and go back to the inbox. After a few moments, the email goes away. At least I think it does. I looked in the deleted folder, not there.
I increased the Message download limit to Entire Message so I won't have to go thru this.
Does anyone know why the message would be removed after downloading the entire message and then reading it? Where did the message go?
I have the same problem also with gmail its giving me errors saying my settings are wrong but I haven't touched anything
I'm seeing this as well. Although it doesn't always happen. Any fix yet?
It's a known issue and hope google will fix it soon
Try recent:[email protected] instead of just [email protected] not 100%

oh i love you. i setup another account and told it to use automatic setup. it put the "recent" there and I removed it. I will try.

Hi guys i have v recently got a vario 3 and i am not very clued up on its uses as yet, i was hoping for a little help?
I want to use my googlemail on my handset and i have allowed the phone to check for auto settings. this has been done and then nothing appears in the inbox.
At first i thought it was because it wont show old messages however it doesnt show new either.
I have tried to send and email from the phone to myself and it sends fine and will come up on my laptop but it will not show on the phone? Can anyone help with this at all??
Any advice would be appreciated?
Ah so its a bug ..... I thought I was going mad!
Hey...
I asked this question a while back in the PPC6700 forums when I had that device on WM5...never found an answer. I'm hoping something has changed in that time frame.
I want to be able to have audible alerts for incoming e-mail, but ONLY from specific senders. Using SMS is not an option.
So, for instance if I get an email from [email protected] it will ring an alarm (at 3am and wake me up) but if is an e-mail from anyone else it will stay silent.
Any way to do this, even if I have to purchase an additonal application?
thx!
I realize that its name, Photo Contacts Pro, is a bit misleading, but this is a very powerful/flexible program that will do exactly what you're looking for. Take a look at its incarnations at the vendor's website and decide for yourself -- there's alot there to read:
http://xxx.pocketx.com
Thanks Mark,
Are you 100% sure that this application can do what I ask?
I looked on their website and their features list that you can assign distinctive Ring and SMS tones to different contacts. It doesn't mention anything about e-mail.
I would plan on using pocket outlook with push mail from an Exchange server...so I really think it would be the function of the mail client to differentiate one incoming e-mail from another. Maybe there is a more feature rich e-mail client that has this functionality?
If you have actually done what I have asked (distinctive alerts to specific EMAIL addresses), then I will download the demo and see what I can do...
thanks again!

Hate to disappoint but it will not do that. This software currently operates on incoming caller id (sms has that also) not email address. I did suggest the use of email to them in addition to sms so they may someday do some work on it but not now.
Although I don't currently know of anything that will do what you want (which doesn't mean it isn't available) you MAY be able to get around the limitation.
I would try having the exchange server fire out a short note or even a forward of the email to your phone's sms address. They all have the ability to get the email as sms albeit it would be chopped to 160 chars. Now, if you can identify the source of the incoming sms via caller id you can indeed use photocontacts by creating a special profile with silence being the default for all contacts except the exchange server forwards. This way the incoming sms will set off the alarm which will tell you to check your email.
Hey, better than nothing, no?
eh..yeah thanks NY... I was afraid of that answer.
What we did for our alerting system previously was have the alerts sent to the phone mail/SMS address and all other e-mails to our normal exchange. This way we would turn on SMS alerts and turn off e-mail. It does work, but not the ideal solution. It would be so simple to have this functionlity in pocket Outlook as a "rule" too bad they haven't gotten there yet!
thanks
having that kind of selection hasn't gotten that far yet, don't forget this is a pocket pc with phone capabilities

I'm aware of a couple of programs that will alert based on email sender, subject, etc. The first is Message Alerts, and the second is Watchflag. I've never used Watchflags before, but it looks pretty good. I used Message Alerts back when I had a RIM Blackberry. It worked perfectly.
Try also phoneAlarm V2.0 not 1.66 from http://www.pocketmax.net
This is a new option in V2.0
Beautiful guys thanks! All 3 look like they will do what i want (from description) I will try them out.
thanks again!
bengalih, thanks for the link. Question for you, did you ever try one of these programs? I guess my request is a little different than yours was in that I am not trying to notify by email address but simply by email account. So one notification for my Yahoo, another for my daughters and yet another for work. If one of these apps can accomplish this, then that would be great. Thanks again.
Email notification
This is only mildly related, but I want my new email notification to show the sender and/or subject line and not just "You have ## new email messages..."
I can't find any notification settings that would adjust this. Any suggestions?
Came accross this earlier today, still in its beta stage but definately has the potential to be great. Give it a shot and let us know what you think.

PowerSMS [beta]
6 useful text messaging utilities in 1 cool app.
Overview
PowerSMS is a mobile application for people who love text messaging. It enables a number of interesting communication scenarios, which are either cumbersome or impossible without it.
PowerSMS does not replace your phone's built-in text messaging features. Instead, it works with the same folders and messages you already have. It's simple, performs tasks quickly, and gets out of the way. Use PowerSMS to improve communications with your family, friends and colleagues, and they'll wonder how you do it!
Features
•Note to Self: Need to capture a thought or send yourself a reminder? With PowerSMS, there's no fumbling around to type your own phone number or search for a contact.
•Group Message: Texting the same set of people over and over again? PowerSMS lets you create groups of contacts, and drastically reduces the number of clicks required to text them
•Auto Reply: Ever ignore a phone call while you're in a meeting or movie theater? Let PowerSMS respond to those calls automatically with a text message, thus politely letting them know when you'll call back
•Schedule SMS: Schedule greetings or reminders in advance. PowerSMS will automatically send the message even if you forget. Especially appreciated by loved ones
•Cool Stats: Let PowerSMS analyze your messages and tell you interesting things like when and with whom you text the most over a given period. Just for fun or to verify your bill
•Backup & Restore: Switching phones? Just need to get rid of old messages? PowerSMS will help you archive, transfer or export messages to your computer or to another phone
Screenshots
Looks pretty cool... The schedule SMS feature is what got my attention!
Looks great. Will try it but have a couple of questions:-
Does it take away the WM6.1 threaded SMS feature if you install it?
Does it uninstall cleanly and leave the original SMS functionality completely restored?
I had to uninstall it. For whatever reason, if I received a call, with the auto reply SMS feature installed, it would come up and say "problem with WM 6.1 voice command, please restart voice command and try again".
Probably something on my end, but won't have time to track it down until the
weekend.
this is a truly amazing app. ive been looking for something like this for a while. great find!

ans 1....Not it doesnt, it's a standalone program hence doesnt integrate with the WM6.1 messaging system. It has to be launched separately.
ans 2...becos it's a standalone program, it uninstalls cleanly.
This program is awesome, but i have one question that maybe someone can answer.
Does this allow sending to an unlimited number of contacts at once? or does it only send off as many as the PPC can handle?
I have to send text messages throughout the day to several people at once, and if i get to more than twenty something contacts, the text will fail.
Thanks in advance.

Name: IM Buddy
Hi. Developer for IM Buddy here.
**** Limited Time Offer ****
**** Price drop to $1.99 ****
I am an avid user of Yahoo Messenger, and was disappointed that it did not exist for my Samsung Focus. And thus IM Buddy was born. IM Buddy uses published SDKs to talk directly to Yahoo's server. As such, there is no middle-man involved and your information is kept confidential. This does have the drawback of not being able to utilize push notification since that would need done thought a middleman server. The panorama controls have been utilized to give IM Buddy a WP7 look and feel.
Please note: WP7 currently does not allow background processes for 3rd party apps.
Features at a glance:
Allow Connect on Start (AutoLogin)
Allowing viewing of offline contacts
Receive and display offline messages after signing back in
Display of online contacts image in contact window
Display of contact image in chat window
Option to Logoff on Close (instead of appearing online)
Toast-like notifications
Allow user to change presence status
Autocomplete/word correction enabled
Use chat keyboard to utilize smileys shorcut
Message timestamps (grouped to save screen space)
Allow user to send a BUZZ
link to online FAQ page added
Additional features on the paid version:
Text to Speech on incoming messages
Customizeable panorama background (theme based otherwise)
Audible on incoming message
Signin as Invisible
v.1.11
Fix session timeout
Add Text-To-Speech (paid version)
v.1.10
Add clearer error messages
Add images to contact window
Add a way to show 'help/FAQ' from website
Please let me know what issues you guys are having.

Some suggestions:
When the application closes (user presses Start button), make the app remember open chat windows in that session and last few (if not all) messages during that session.
When user goes back to closed IM Buddy session by pressing Back button, display saved chat windows/previous messages
If possible, have the app display messages received while offline.
The suggestions above in addition to auto-login (or auto relogin) are useful workarounds to WP7's lack of background support.
Display the X button on pages where it actually does something (chat window)
Make error messages more informative --- Auth failed, Poll failed
Right now the YM mobile website is more reliable for me even if I have to do a page refresh to get latest messages since I can keep track of recent messages, and messages received while offline.
V1.2 has just been approved and is now on the marketplace.
Offline messages should be displayed as soon as you login.
I'll look at saving a few of the messages on close. Was already planning to move the X button just as you said.
I checked out v1.2. Displaying received messages while offline is erratic. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
One time, even while I was already online, I didn't receive any messages, not before I sent a message to the user using IM Buddy. Only then did I start receiving new messages, but I lost all the other messages.
Logoff on close only works when exiting the app with the back button. Using the Start button doesn't logoff the user. Is that by design?
Thanks for the feedback.
I'll check on those issues. I haven't noticed either.
At version 1.0, it always close the other conversation instead of which I choose to close. Did you fix that "funny" bug?
At 1.2, the performance is not really smooth
Just found the close chat window bug. fix will be in 1.3
Just checked the Logoff issue. It seems to occur randomly. It appears that the application is not gettting enough time to complete to transaction to the Yahoo server always.
I will remove 'Logoff on Close' option until I can get a better handle on the timing. You will be in the last status before you leave the app.
V.1.3 will allow you to select from several Status options
I keep getting Update notice, but when I go thru the steps to update, it still says there is an update.
Marketplace: 1 update, tap, Goes to IM Buddy, tap Updated All, Loading, Pending, installing application.. repeat.
Hi. I've seen this before, with other apps as well. The quick solution is to uninstall and install the new version.
This might be a stupid question, but I paid for the app. Does uninstalling it mean I have to buy it again? (this will be the first paid for app I will be uninstalling)
According to MS it should reecognize you have previously purchased the app. See link below
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2434864
"According to MS" Yeah, I've read that article a few days ago, but I have read other posts elsewhere that says it doesn't. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
v.1.3 is on its way. Just waiting for market approval.
Fix close chat window bug
Allow user to send a bug report email
Allow user to change presence status
Autocomplete/word correction enabled
Use chat scope to add smileys shorcut
Enter key sends out message in chat window
Add message timestamp, in groups
Add background to chat bubbles
Allow user to change panorama background (paid version)
Disable Logoff on Close (till further notice)
@babyjustine: do you plan to add other Protocolls to it? like AIM/ICQ?
Jabber/xmpp/google would probably be next in line with regards to other protocols... But I need to perfect the YM part first.
v.1.3 is now live on the MarketPlace!

If you have a business phone number to enter into contacts, it seems that Phone search function will not find that entry without a person entered into the contact info.
Sometimes you don't have a name of a person - just a company or government office to contact. If you enter the name of the company (under "Add organization" as you should) and phone number (under "Phone"), when you search for the company name using the Phone's search function, it does not appear in the Phone search results.
The same error happens if you search for a word in the address fields (in case you just remember the street of a contact and search for the street name).
The Phone search function should search ALL fields of your contacts. You may only remember a street name, city, first name, last name or whatever. You should see all Contact entries that contain the word (or partial term) that you search for.
Now I know full well that people are people and that people make mistakes. But, even raising this as a bug over at the Android forums isn't getting any attention from Google. Why would Google (of all companies) ignore such a basic search bug?
I am using Nexus 4 with 4.2.2 installed. I'd be very interested in knowing if this bug affects other Android handsets as well.
That's Contact information, not Phone information. Try searching Contacts.
^^^what this person said, I just did an address search in contacts and it pulled up the proper contact^^^
Also take into account that the search feature had to be changed due to apple playing patent pansies so google had to redo how they did the search. This could have been a side effect of this.

That makes no sense whatsoever. All Contacts are viewable in your Phone app by clicking on the Contact symbol in the upper right corner of the phone.
The Contact list and the Phone contacts are the SAME LIST. There are not separate lists for Phone and People apps.
Searching for a contact (whether in the Phone app or Contact app) should search all contact text - no matter the field.

I'm just saying that searching for a person/phone number from the Phone app should search every field in every contact entry on your phone.
The one exception that I might see would be to exclude all contacts with no phone number information. After all, what is the phone app going to do with a contact with no phone number? The only possible purpose for the phone to pull up contacts with no phone number would be to add a manually dialed number (or a new number shown by an incoming call) to an existing contact, and it already includes "Add to contact" in it's menu options.
This should be simple. Contacts are text files. NOT searching the whole text file or each contact just doesn't make sense.
I just wish I could get the attention of someone at Google. So far, still nothing after reporting the bug in the Android forums.

I have a feeling this all goes back to the Search patent issues with apple that happened a while ago. I would really try a 3rd party app, this maybe your best bet.
