[GUIDE] Back Up and Restore your ROM (manual method)

For these steps to work, ensure that your Milestone currently contains an unprotected recovery image (eg. Brazilian 2.0.1 SPF or the vulnerable recovery SPF for 2.1 Milestones).
Also ensure that you have installed the Android SDK so that you can access your phone with ADB.
These instructions are mostly based on user poseiden's guide at alldroid.org, before the site went down and was cleaned up.
How to make a Nandroid backup
Download the ADBRecovery files from here.
Unzip the archive onto the base of your SD card, so that you have a /recovery folder and an update.zip (NOTE: if you had an earlier update.zip, it will be overwritten with the ADBRecovery update.zip, so back up or rename the original update.zip.)
Reboot your phone into recovery menu:
Turn off phone
Press Camera button, then press Power. Hold them both till you see recovery screen.
Press Volume Up and Camera button at the same time till you see the recovery menu.
Run the update.zip.
Connect via ADB and execute:
If you want everything backed up:

How to do a Nandroid restore
Ensure the Nandroid backup content is found under your phone's /sdcard/nandroid/console=ttyS2,115200n8 folder.
Ensure the /recovery folder and ADBRecovery update.zip is at the base of your SD card.
Reboot your phone into recovery menu:
Turn off phone
Press Camera button, then press Power. Hold them both till you see recovery screen.
Press Volume Up and Camera button at the same time till you see the recovery menu.
Run the update.zip.
Connect via ADB and execute:

Type the name of the backup you want to restore.

Telus 2.0.1 unrooted backup
Here's a clean Telus Milestone 2.0.1 Nandroid backup. I found this one on the web, and then I removed the "su" and "Superuser.apk" files so that it's no longer rooted. Sorry, the original source is uncredited as I forgot where I got it from.
As far as I know, there is no shipped SPF of the 2.0.1 Telus firmware, so this is your only option to go back to stock.

I used this to restore back to stock Telus Milestone ROM so that I could return the device. The only thing different from the original purchased state was the recovery SPF, but that would be really hard to tell or to find out (just a version number difference).

There's a step missing from the backup process. You need to 'flash' the update.zip from the recovery menu before you can connect over adb.

no need for a computer to do this anymore custome recovery does all that from the phone now .

I've made a lot of modifications to my stock rom, and would like to share it.... so is system.img a valid way to share my *own* rom or mod ? (valid as in technically feasible? means ppl can d/l it n flash using recovery n use it?)
my main concerns are... will it boot on someone else's device? (i tried it myself... total wipe + clean stock instal, followed by flashing only my backed up system.img, *didn't flash data.img, only system* it took an eternity to boot first time but it ran)
second concern... system.img doesn't have any personal data right? logs, msgs etc are in data partition i guess??

E: can't open /cache/update.zip - need help

Hi folks.
Having some problems everytime I try to boot in recovery mode or try to install a ROM using ROM Manager.
when my phone boots into manual recovery mode, I eventually get this message.
E: can't open /cache/update.zip
(bad)
Installation Aborted
I've made sure I have my update.zip in the root of my internal sd. In manual recovery mode, I even selected the "reinstall packages" option and it would execute just fine and then reboot my phone.
So I'm stuck scratching my head as to why I get the error message above and can't access the additional menu items in the manual recovery mode.
Help please as I am a noob to this hacking stuff.

after you reinstall packages and it reboots, do you select reinstall packages again? you should because it takes 2 times to get into clockworkmod

There's your problem. Your new file should NOT be named update.zip. The update.zip package MUST be the one for CWM. Its this update.zip that is used when you choose reinstall package and then you get into 2e recovery mode.
Name your file something different so it won't interfere with the update.zip of CWM on your sd root.
If you deleted that CMW update.zip file just return in CMW and reinstall the Recovery. It will push the update.zip again.

Not sure I completely understand.
to give clearer picture, here is where my update.zip file is located.
/sdcard (folder)
within the /sdcard folder are the following:
/Android
/clockworkmod
/DCIM
/download
/layar
/media
/sd
/tmp
...and finally, my update.zip file
so I'm assuming the update.zip is in its proper location within the /sdcard folder
With the file there, I reboot into manual recover and select reinstall packages...it executes and the phone boots up and turns on. It doesn't return me to the manual recovery mode again and I'm assuming it is during the return to the manual recovery mode where I can access additional menu items such as install from SD.
So I'm assuming this update.zip file I have now is the one for CWM. Thoughts?

at what point did you FLASH clockwork recovery manager? are you sure that update.zip file thats on there isnt for something else like the root?

to be honest, at this point I'm not entirely sure. the update.zip could be for the root.

-First delete every update.zip you have in /sdcard
-Return in ClockworkMod and tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery (yes it will reinstall the recovery, thus copying the right update.zip onto the /sdcard).
-Now rename your .zip you were trying to install (ie. my_new_file.zip)
-Copy it in /sdcard
-Reboot into Recovery and select Reinstall Package (if it goes directly into the recovery menu even better)
-Now you should be in the CWM Recovery.
-Select the "install zip from sdcard"
-Select your "my_new_file.zip" to flash it.
-Reboot in normal mode.

ok...so I went into ROM Manager application and tapped on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
A status bar displayed and it completed like in a second or 2. Then I went into my /sdcard directory and there is no update.zip file there. Doesn't seem like it is copying the update.zip file into the directory.

No biggy, just means the recovery is correctly installed.
Just follow the procedure and try it like it is and see if you get a error.

flashing clockwordmod recovery doesn't install an update.zip on your sd card (1 click roots do).
All flashing CWM recovery does is install clockwork recovery in place of standard recovery mode.

ok...so I've deleted the update.zip file from the /sdcard directory.
went into ROM Manager and clicked on Flash ClockworkMode Recovery
Rebooted my phone and got to the <2e> screen. I click on reinstall packages and now it gives me an error message that the update.zip cannot be found.
So then I used z4 root to unroot. I then rooted my phone again and found that it didn't place an update.zip in the /sdcard directory. So it appears without the update.zip in the /sdcard directory I cannot reinstall packages. But if I put the update.zip file back into the /sdcard directory, I can reinstall packages, but then I'm back to the same issue again....feels like a never ending loop.

ok...finally got things to work. Looks like I had the wrong update.zip file in my /sdcard.
I searched the forums and found the correct one that now allowed me to reinstall packages twice and take me to the full recovery menu.

Awesome, thanks! I had just returned my Captivate to AT&T for a replacement today, and I was pretty convinced the shysters had made it harder for me to re-root and mod my phone. Now, how do I wire you a beer?

If you downloaded with your phone right after rooting, make sure you delete the update from the general sd card folder and move the update from your download folder to the general sd card folder. I had flashed with odin and rom manager last night and i had to install it that way due to fact clockwork has been down.

ROM Manager Reboot?

Slight issue here, not sure if anyone has had it before.
Just acquired a Captivate as an xmas gift to myself (sick of that iPhone), and began the whole process of getting a new ROM onto it. Rooted, installed ROM Manager, flashed a clockworkmod recovery (2.5.1.2), and hit "Backup Current ROM".
The device reboots into the standard recovery mode with the usual options (reboot system now, reinstall packages, delete all user data, delete cache data).
No backup is made, and I just have to continue the reboot. I've tried flashing to an older version, clearing the download cache, and using the option to go to ROM Manager's recovery mode (just takes me to the default recovery boot).
Am I doing something wrong here? I followed all of the instructions step by step.

Try doing "reinstall packages".
Steps:
1. Copy the clockwork recovery "update.zip" attached to this post to ur sdcard root.
2. Reboot to recovery.
3. Select "reinstall packages".
4. It would say something like replacing recovery with clockwork recovery, and reboot into recovery. This happens only the first time u use this.
5. Select "reinstall packages" again.
6. You should be in clockwork recovery.

Ok. I'll explain to the best of my knowledge.
The zip I gave u is the most non-intrusive way of CWM. No ROM manager installer is needed on phone apart from placing this zip on sdcard root.
When the phone boots up, it loads the default recovery console. When we select "reinstall packages", it loads "update.zip" on the sdcard root by default. Since the update.zip we have there is the CWM zip, it loads it therby loading CWM console.
If u don't want CWM, just delete this update.zip.
Hope this helps.

I have this exact same issue ROM Manager is doing nothing but rebooting into recovery. So if I use your workaround, I need to keep this update.zip file on my device at all times?

Yes best to do so

All ROM Manager does is download the update.zip that was posted and put it on your SD Card. The other steps need to be done regardless.

I got the ROM backup working. I guess I was too impatient the first time. I cleared/moved a lot of stuff off my internal SD card too....doubt that it mattered.
But it works quite well.

HELP! I bricked my captivate! :confused:

I was trying the Gingerbread CynogenMod 7 and I think i have bricked my captivate. It does not start .. Any help is appreciated..
This is what i did:
I followed these steps :
Download the initial package: cm7-captivate-initial-package-XXXXXXXX-XX.zip (link below)
Extract it
Copy following files to your internal sdcard
- captivate-efsbackup.zip
- cm7-captivate-initial-XXXXXXXX-XX.zip
- cm7-captivate-radio-XXX.zip (pick the one you want, I use JK4)
Flash a Kernel that contains Clockworkmod recovery 2.X or 3.X using odin (e.g. I had http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914284 )
!! Don't use "reboot recovery" command or other shiny things to do the step below !!
Reboot into recovery using 3-button-combo and apply captivate-efsbackup.zip.
Flash cm7-captivate-initial-kernel.tar as pda using odin without auto-reboot
Reboot into recovery using 3-button-combo
Choose "mounts & storage" and format system, data, cache
Apply zip from sdcard: cm7-captivate-initial-XXXXXXXX-XX.zip
Do a wipe!
Apply zip from sdcard: cm7-captivate-radio-XXX.zip
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All this while it gave me an error : E: no misc partition found..
Then next step was to Copy Gapps to your internal sdcard and apply zip (link below)
Then i realised i forgot to copy this zip .. I was stuck.. So decided to revert back .. Restored the Nandroid partition which i had done earlier.. This was a Froyo Nandroid! Obviously it failed and now the phone is bricked!!!!!!!!!!
This is the first time i hve bricked my phone and I am freaking out! PLease help!

You could start by reading one of the 5000000 other threads just like this one.
I'm not trying to get on your case specifically, but there's only a few answers to this problem and I don't understand the need for a new thread every time.

Not sure why you extracted the zip file you can just flash that through clockwork. Try getting into download mode with the 3 button method to flash back to stock with odin
Ya never restore a nandroid backup if you are not on the exact same rom and version as the backup

Htc One Mini 2- Stuck on Battery Logo

Hi guys! Yesterday i installed NostromoPop 2.3.0 (08/02/16)[CM12.1][5.1.1] cuz my rear camera wasn't working and i found that could be a fix, but doesn't work. So this morning i tried to put back the stock rom but my phone got stucked on battery logo. I've tried to push power button for a long time and volume down+power . But seems that is not responding.
Could i fix it or it's dead? Thanks! ( Sorry for my bad english)

How are you reinstalling Stock ROM ?
You can try to press Power+Vol Up key to enter recovery, if you have TWRP installed you can re-flash stock ROM from a Nandroid Backup

I deleted my OS and i can't put the rom on phone. i've tried with adb sideload but my device is unauthorized. now i'm trying with rebootRUU but i've got some error. May you help me?

- DOWNLOAD AND EXTRACT THE NANDROID BACK UP FILE

- RESTART THE DEVICE AND ENTER TWRP, CHOOSE RESTORE

What do you mean bootloader and recovery, TWRP is your recovery...Can you enter TWRP... ?, if you can, enter an SD Card in the phone and make backup...then follow the given steps...

I wanna say dat i can't put files on my phone. i created the backup but how can i put nandroid files in that folder?
