I just bought a nexus and i would like to know what are the best apps and games to install as well of should i stay with the stock rom or should flash it.
Thanks
As long as you backup your stock ROM you are all right. you can always return to the stock ROM

I'd wait until May 19 (Google I/O conference) to see what the next official update is all about before unlocking your phone and installing other ROMs.
Despite what people claim, once you go through with installing a different recovery system on the phone (a requirement for running custom ROMs), there's NO going back to 100% stock. It's not like other phones where you can restore the phone to it's original configuration.
now that froyo is right around the corner, i'd probably agree with prawnpoboy. i don't feel like i made a mistake in rooting and switching ROM, kernel, and radio. but, that was so i could get some functionality that stock didn't have, and put some new theme's on it. but, you can get some decent home applications and whatnot on stock without rooting (and consequently voiding your warranty).
i'd say wait the 2 weeks, and see what happens.

Hey all so I currently have an unlocked bootloader, rooted Nexus One still running the Stock Froyo 2.2.2. and I decided to finally upgrade to the OTA Gingerbread update but have a problem.
The OTA update restarts my phone with a triangle with an "!" inside it and an Android next to it, so I decided to try a manual update as described here.
Everything went well until the installation itself, during the install I kept getting some sort of error stating Twitter.apk in the system directory could not be authenticated.
So here's the problem, with Titanium Backup I made the stupid mistake of uninstalling it and not backing it up when I first rooted a while ago. I thought I could just reinstall it from the market but I get the same error. The only solution I can think of is if someone running a Nexus One Stock Froyo could possibly send me the Titanium Backup files of Twitter, hopefully this would make it work, otherwise I don't think I could ever update.
Since your bootloader is unlocked, you can use fastboot to install a custom recovery and then flash whatever you want (including a stock image)...

Thanks for the response, but I'm having trouble figuring some of this stuff, after spending some time with the search option here in XDA:
1. I don't the difference between custom recovery and flashing an image.
2. I can't find a simple stock Gingerbread image (thought its called ROM?) Details in posts tend to be vague for people that are learning this stuff, like me.
3. Many people have written to use Amron_ra 2.2.1 but I don't know the specifics of each ROM are (ex. if its Froyo based, Gingerbread based, etc.)
4. Would using ROM Manager be a good method to use any ROM or is it limited?
I'm essentially looking for an effective method to upgrading to a clean Gingerbread, since doing it the normal way won't work on my phone (as stated in my first post).
1 - Recovery, bootloader, and 'ROM' are two different partitions on you phone. Once you break security on one, you can use it to break the security on the other. In your case, the security on your bootloader is broken (unlocked), so you can use it to install new software on the other partitions.
2 - See bullet 4 on the first post of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005591
3 - For recovery you have 2 choices, Amon Ra or Clockwork, If you go with Clockwork, I recommend you stay away from 3.x versions. Unless the ROM you want to install says otherwise, either of these recoveries will work.
4 - ROM Manger will work. It's an easy way to achieve results, but unless you know what you are doing, it's also an easy way to screw things up.
I suggest you take it a step at at a time, and really understand what you are doing. Reading the wiki is always a good start, then ask specific questions...

Thanks Danger, I made the jump to Cyanogen 7, RC-4 via ROM Manager and couldn't be happier! Only problem is the known audio bug for Nexus One (person on other end of a call hears a lot of static sometimes, and have to recall them). The forced apps2sd is by far my most favourite feature, especially since the N1 internal space is pretty horrible, I've moved most of my apps2sd and haven't had any problems thus far.
Thanks for recommending CM7, I just wish their website listed the full features for newbies like me.
Thanks danger-rat http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/...lick-doesnt-work-gingerbread-2.html#post93952
I downgraded my gingerbread to froyo
Was pulling my hair out with a lame guide in the general section
Congrats!!

can anybody tell me that can you or can you not install two operating system on samsung galaxy s like in computer cause i want to use custom ROM and default os.
I don't think it's possible at the moment, but it would be pretty awesome if it was.
The only thing I can see this benefiting is someone who wants to have a development rom on their phone, but still having a stable rom that they can use for their daily rom. That and flashing would be an issue unless cement or Odin could be made to recognise multiple system partitions so they could segregate the two roms.
The only way I think it could work is if there was a master boot record that could direct the system to the correct partition when the user selected the rom that they wanted to load at boot.

2 OS on the phone makes some sense imho.
I also thought about having some dual-boot with some beta-alpha-status custom rom (like CM7) and something stable to go back to.
But this will most likely never work with odin, as it expects a more or less fixed partition-table, I think (it uses pit-files to change it).
This would be the responsibility of the bootloader, and all custom roms use the original bootloader provided by Samsung.
I just use CWM nandroid backup now, if I want to go back to some previous state.
Installing CWM is not that big a deal even after recovering from a "soft brick" (non-working boot/recovery).
i think in time it will be available, They sell dual boot phones on ebay.
they are cheaply made chinese phones, so with the right team and the right know-how i think it could well be made on SGS (what do i know - im no developer)
but if the chinks can make it, im sure we could (by 'WE' i mean someone else not me lol)
anyway the chinese phones on ebay can boot both android 2.2 and windows 6, i would not like windows but maybe 2 different versions of android, perhaps stock + custom, that would be nice
EDIT: i found a simpler way - you get 2 SGS's glue them back to back and a simple flip turns you into another OS im so smart
Hello, first off, I'm new to the android OS, especially flashing ROMs. I did however have some prior experience in flashing other mobiles such as the Symbian platform on my previous Nokia phones.
I would like to try the new Firmware XXLA1 as of now Im using an OTA update kernel version of 2.6.35.7-N7000DXKL3[email protected]#2.
Btw, im from the Philippines and I bought this handset on this country.
So going back to my question, what are the repercussions and implications if I flash the LA1 official ROM from Samsung knowing that its a ROM for "Open Europe"?
if your phone is unlocked (No carrier restriction) you can flash any Stock ROM
Yes, i bought it unlocked. Will the app availability in the market change?
Also, since its an official ROM, would it break my warranty?
I Live in Indonesia, yes samsung Indonesia say it will break our warranty but you can flash it back to KL3 whenever you want to claim it..
Bump. I would also like to know of any important differences between stock roms if any. I live in the US and will be getting my Note in the next day or so and think I will root it but keep it stock and just uninstall any bloatware I deem unnecessary.
I recommend using it for a week before you try any (potentially) warranty breaking mods on it. Get used to it. learn how things work. Then when you start modding you will have a far better idea if the mod has broken something or not.
You can generally flash a ROM from any region, as long as you understand the language. You can flash RADIO seperately, and you would choose one that will work well with your local provider. Lastly, you can manually set the APN settings to lock onto your chosen provider.
Be aware that some new devices have a "binary counter" which will sometimes increase when you flash something. Your warranty may be affected. Spend time reading the forums learning about the issues before you flash.
Thanks! Sounds like a plan

Looking at the kernel version you have, it is safe to assume that we possess the same unit, and yes we have the same roots (oy, kapatid!) as well.
I started rooting my unit after a few weeks of getting familiar with it. Don't worry too much, since i was able to successfully flash root my unit and install CWM (clockworkmod), using the zergrush exploit.
Once CWM was installed, the 1st thing i did was a nandroid backup, just to keep a backup on my stock settings.
After that, i tried flashing custom ROMs, and it worked flawlessly, albeit with bugs. Just follow the steps outlined on each ROM thread and you should do fine.
Managed to encounter boot loops, phone not booting up, etc., but nothing too critical that made my unit useless.
As for your question, the obvious implication is that by flashing custom ROMs, you void your warranty. So, unless you have qualms in losing your warranty, then go ahead and flash a custom ROM.
Im selling my captivate tomorrow and I want to make sure all of my personal data is removed. The phone is rooted and running a custom rom (froyo if my memory serves me correct) I believe new boot loaders were involved if that matters, screen shot below.
Should I be using the factory reset option with it running a custom ROM? is this harmful? or should i be doing it a different way
Thanks for any help!!
I think its not a bad idea to restore to stock. It will make sure everything is as it should be in a 'out of the box' phone and nothing more.
And doesn't hurt to use CwM and do a data and sd card wipe beforehand.
Are you upgrading to another galaxy? or something else?

Thanks for answering. your sure I dont need to use like Odin to flash back to eclair?
I remember reading somewhere that with the new boot loaders ODIN couldnt be used or something like that. I could be waay wrong
I got rid of my old Iphone for the Captivate and loved it for a while but i got bored with it after a while like i did my old Iphone. Picked the new new 4S. Apple is just more convenient for me to use for the time being. Im not a crazy fanboy of either by anymeans.
Personally, I would flash back to either 2.1 or 2.2, whichever came on your phone originally, or the official 2.3 release. Once you are back to stock, then do a reset just to be sure.
If you leave a custom ROM on it and something goes wrong (or if they weren't expecting it), they're going to come back to you wanting to know why they can't get the stock upgrades, etc.
good point I was hoping to avoid all that. Im just selling to some random person on craigs list but I guess it would be the courteous thing to not screw them in the future
& Odin worked like a charm
I use Odin to flash back to stock JF6 ROM and use that same Odin to do a masterclear after going back to stock. Works like a charm and EVERYTHING is wiped out.

soo my current phone right now is a Samsung stratosphere, well i have been having some big problems with it and well verizon said since i'm a long time and good customer (never ever been late on my bill) they said he will upgrade me to the droid 4 for 50$ without renewing my contract.
i am kinda new to the whole motorola stuff as i have allways had samsung android phones (i had a Motorola Backflip but i sold it 2 months later to get the Samsung captivate so i never got the chance to root it or anything) i noticed these phones have locked bootloaders and is just all pretty much on lock down compared to Samsung phones is that true?
does the droid 4 have root? and does it have custom roms? can you edit Boot animations on this phone with only root? does this phone officially have ICS?
i will be getting my Droid 4 tomorrow morning in the mail and very excited i have not done anything cool with phones since i had my Epic 4G as the stratosphere had no one working on it and only had root and that was that
First off, welcome to the D4! It really is a wonderful piece of hardware. I think you’ll enjoy it.
Now, to answer some of your questions.
1. Yes, the D4 has a locked bootloader. What does this mean? It means we are stuck with the kernel that Moto gives us. It does make it a bit more difficult of the devs but other than that, it’s really not THAT big of a deal. Of course I might not be saying that if I was the one developing ROMs for this thing.
2. The D4 does have root. The Droid 4 Utility makes it a piece of cake. Look for the “Droid 4 Utility Updated” thread in the dev section.
3. The phone does not officially have ICS. Not yet anyways. We have had 4 or 5 ICS leaks from Moto that run really really well so it can’t be far off. I am currently running the .213 ICS leak myself and it has been flawless for me.
4. We do have a few custom ROMs. There a couple of GB based ROMs that run off the stock GB kernel. Those are Eclipse and Arctic. I ran Eclipse for quite a while. Very nice. There is also CM9, AOKP, and Gummy ICS ROMs that run off the stock GB kernel. Your mileage may vary with these as they are a bit buggy from running off an older kernel. We now also have CM9 and AOKP ROMs based off the ICS kernel from the Moto ICS leaks. These are really early builds but I have been running the CM9 build for a few days now and it is surprisingly stable for how new it is.
5. I am not sure about changing boot animations. It seems I have seen somewhere, someone saying that using ROM Toolbox to change the boot animation sent them into a bootloop and they had to restore a backup. Not sure on that though. Haven’t tried it myself.
ok well from the looks of it i wanna go straight to ICS!
how would i go about doing that from Stock non root? i saw the one click root for GB and looks easy but how about ICS with root?
if i do flash the ICS leak and when the official ICS comes out will it brink my phone if i upgrade from ICS leak to ICS official?
it just seems for right now i wanna just have ICS with root and play with custom roms later when the official ICS comes out.
Since you will be going straight from stock the process will be really easy. Just download the latest ICS leak .zip file (currently .213) and stick it on your external sd card. Boot into stock recovery (hold power + volume up + volume down and select recovery), when you get to the little android guy in a box, hit volume up + volume down, then select the option to install from sd card, select the .zip file, let it do its thing and like magic, you’re on the latest Moto ICS leak. Then use the Droid 4 Utility update by jsnweitzel to root.
If you flash the ICS leak you will have to jump though a couple of hoops to get back on the OTA when it finally comes out. The OTA won’t brick your phone, it just won’t install. But there is a thoroughly tested way of jumping from leak to leak that should work to jump to the OTA and be back on the official upgrade path. This functionality is also built into jsnweitzel’s tool.
ok i went to http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...leak-kernel-crc-droid-4-build-6-16-213-a.html to download the .213 ICS update but it list 3 things
CRC file,Kernel,Leak
do i need to download the kernel or CRC file as well? or just the Leak file

All you will need is the leak as long as you have an external sd card. The kernel is only needed for people jumping from one leak to another and I believe the crc file is for those who do not have a external sd card installed.
ok i see i got that stuff downloaded
now about the Droid 4 utility
i downloaded the tool, but under the number 2 part it says to download the GB 219 fastboot files do i need those as well? i tried downloading them but it seems both links are down
also in that droid 4 utility walkthrough it says to download the kernel for
"2. Get the matching Kernel 6.16.213 (boot.img) here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Byw...1J0VFBCY1NBM2M
Unzip this folder and copy the boot.img to the "files" folder of the tool. It must be named "ICSFIX" for the tool to work."
also one more thing how does motorola phones do Backups? is there a CWM to backup my phone in case of a brick?
You will need the GB .219 fastboot files eventually to jump from the leak to the OTA (unless .213 ends up BEING the OTA). But you don’t need them right now since you will already be on unmodified stock GB.
You also do not need the kernel since you are on stock GB. You only need the kernel if you are going from one leak to another.
ok sounds good,

Right now we have safestrap recovery. You should find the thread in the dev section. Since you will be on ICS you will want the 2.0 version meant for ICS. You can use this to make a backup as well as to boot into a "safe" system to install ROMs without screwing up you stock "unsafe" system.
i saw the droid razor is getting the ICS update as well, since we have pretty much the same phone are the updates suppose to come out at the same time? are the ICS leaks the same as the Maxx?
Unfortunately no. Moto has stated the D4 will get an ICS update in Q3. With the frequency and quality of the leaks I have to guess that that it will be sooner rather than later but who knows.

My office just got rid of BB and handed out D4's as replacements and the first thing I did with mine was to install the 213 ICS leak and am NOW happy with the device. Have not rooted it yet, that will happen in the next day or so.
well at first the Rep was not gonna let me have the droid 4 and said that most likely his boss wont give it out because the stratosphere is a cheaper phone (the phones he was gonna give me were the LG lucid,Droid charge,Pantech breakout.
but i told the guy i need a keyboard and that was the only reason why i got the strat for, so the guy said he would try to talk down with his manger and well he comes back and tells me he had good news and his manger said yes to the droid 4 as long as i paid something for it (i said $50) and he said that was fine
but he said he would send me a new backplate along with it but no charger (i got my old one but it is really ****ty and falling apart so i gotta order a OEM from Ebay tonight)
i tried using the search but could not find my question but do we have a list of apps that can be safely debloated from this phone on ICS? i like to have my phone free from Verizons crap along with un needed stuff that just waste battery
^^Also looking for a list of things we can remove to debloat all the [email protected] from verizon (can't even use it anyway since i am in canada!)
First off, unfortunately, most of the bloatware cannot be removed without causing problems. A lot of what moto and VZ builds into these things are interdependent on each other. Plus, the OTA updates look to make sure you still have that crap on your phone before it will update. So, unless you can long press on the app in the app drawer and it gives you an option to uninstall, it's best not to. There are some apps that can safely be uninstalled like, the golf and NFL games. The rest you are better off freezing with a program like Titanium Backup. I haven't seen a list on XDA but there is a good list on DF here: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-4-hacks/198081-bloatware-apps-safe-remove-droid-4-a.html that are safe to freeze. This list was started based on stock GB but most, if not all, should apply to ICS as well. I used it to freeze a bunch of stuff on the .213 ICS leak with no problems.

Keep in mind that you can now "disable" applications natively in ICS. keep in mind that if you updated any of the apps the updates must be uninstalled first. Just go to apps / all apps select the app/bloat you want to disable and select, you guess it, disable.
Never mind i think it was a bad download
question i got my phone charged to 100% my last from goes by 100% to 99,98,97 etc etc but i see on this phone after about 15mins it went from 100% to 90% and then 80 over time does this phone go by 10s?
