Not quite a PPC. But still portable :D - Off-topic

Rummaging through the interweb just now i stumbled across this little bit of kit:

Looks pretty cool. I would get one if i had the £445 for it
Maybe in the near future aayyyyyyyyyy

fancy. where can i get one?

I'd love to get one of these true mini-computers (I like to think of my Rhodium as a mini-computer but until it runs regular desktop Windows it will always be somewhat limited).
However, I absolutely hate the way the mouse is setup on most of these kits. Usually there seems to be some kind of minuscule trackpad on one side of the screen and mouse buttons on the other side. I see the mouse buttons on this one, but where's the track pad? Is it that diamond shaped thing on the top left? If so I cannot imagine that the mouse on this thing would be even close to usable.
What I really want is a trackpoint/nipple mouse like the ones on Lenovo Thinkpads. I think Sony produced something like this, but it was absurdly expensive (~$800).

You are referring to the UX series UMPC. Beautiful device (when you install XP on it). My only complain is the keyboard has recessed keys (think of the Motorola Razr), so typing is difficult as hell.
I very much like the one that the OP has posted though. It does look somewhat like the Rhodium

Actually this is what I was thinking of:
Sony Vaio P
Both nice looking kits

The middle one kinda looks like the Uni

Don't get that sharp one, whatever you do. It's a nice machine, but I sold mine after a month because you get about an hour of use out of it(of battery), now I have a viliv s5 and love it. Sony ux was good, never had one, but loved playing with one at the stores

I ended up getting an Acer Aspire One A150.
Got it off a friend who has no idea on the price of electronics...
as a result, i got it for £20
Still might get one of these ULTRA portable netbooks sometime in the future though

£20?!!? niiiiiiice!

Viliv S5
Any other Viliv users here? I want to ask about GPS navigation software for the S5.

Ordering one next month! ..

Yuck... although I like the concept of small portable computers... the reality is usually too much eye strain and inability to do perform "normal" computing tasks.
The smallest I want my computer to be is my netbook... which usually sits collecting dust on my night stand.

Wow people these are so cool! I haven't even heard of antly of these. So awesome. I have to have one now.

Nice had one myself last year. Sold it again after using it a year for $200
If you tweak it a little you'll be able to play GTA Vice City on it San Andreas will also run, but you won't get 60 FPS.

Now this is the ipad i might think about getting...

http://mashable.com/2010/04/26/cheaper-ipad-knock-offs-thrive-in-china/
Who would of thought the knock off would be just as good if not better than the original?
Not sure where you can buy it...i searched ebay and didn't find anything.
lol, though inevitable that was super fast!
More and more clones will hit the market as time goes on.
A few places you can get China's famous knockoffs from:
http://www.dealextreme.com (my favorite & a fantastic site for cheap gadgets, but the most 'legit' in this case, they won't state anything as an 'iPod/iPad' clone)
http://www.focalprice.com - This one is hilarious, they are a rival of DX and openly sell clones though use ridiculous terms to disguise trademarked names such as 'NokLa 3210 beautiful comfort phone' and post their own fake Engrish reviews
http://www.milkandhoneyland.com - I've never used them but they openly sell clones for what they are
Stay the hell away from clones though unless they're something you really want or have money to burn!
Edit:
One version shown had three USB ports

-SD/TF card extension maximal 16GB

Seeing the specs in comparison with the price: not bad
Although a faster processor and higher RAM(eg. double) would improve it vastly.
And did I tell this one is running android??

I've used windows tablets for years, and they all suck unless they have an awesome resistive screen, or a active digitizer. Now those cheap android tablets, on the other hand, are mighty tempting
I got it and is arrived yesterday, i'm very impressed by it; 7 inches is a good size and the screen is very brilliant, 2 hours and half of autonomy and a good response of the touch screen.
But i'm new of Android devices and i've not a term of paragon;
How i can improve the android version? for you is possible to up it to the 2.1?

I wouldn't think you would be able to get 2.1 just yet, with it being the latest firmware anyone know if it gets OTA updates like the phones?
To be honest, I would rather get an iPad over this piece of crap.

I see...this a customizable tablet.....it's alright then...

More than an iPad alternative; TEGA Touch!

Hi guys
If you are looking for a Tablet Touch Screen,
If you are fine with Windows,
If you don’t want a bigger phone than the smart phone you already have, but something having more power and functionality
If you want to keep using your USB memory stick to transfer you last holidays photos because 4Go in Bluetooth takes time…
If you want to arrive at your mate house, a join the network without having to enter credential, and just by plugging an Ethernet cable to the router.
If you want to chat with a webcam
If you want 3G
If you want to be able to display on an external screen (working with Excel on 10” ??, no thanks)
If you are clever enough for multitasking
If you want to be able to get 1 or 2 Gb of Ram
If you want to be sure that your not buying an under configured device, just because some marketing guy want you to buy a “v2.0” in a year.
And if you don’t want to break the piggy bank for all that
Well don’t get an iPad, get something else, something like a TEGA Touch.

I just find that Tablet looking for iPad alternative.
Weighting just 1 kilo, and for price starting at AU$1,086.8, I was pleased to see that for such price, there is an iPad alternative containing
With these specs in the box, you can expect to do what you are normally doing with a computer, not only surfing on the web and read e-book.
I can see easily how the specifications of the TEGA Touch will suit me.
- Sick, working from home? Fed up about being seated in the living room doing a power point for your boss. Transfer all the files on your slate (thanks USB port), grab your slate, go on the couch and keep working with just a stylus. Using PDF, Excel, Internet, eMail at the same time to make your presentation. No worries, you can multitask… The presentation is getting huge (100Mo), no worries, you have 2Gb of Ram.
- Back from holidays? 30Gb of photos to transfer (thanks again USB) and classify… And doing that, you like to get multiple photos open at the same time, so after applying gamma and contrast corrections you can pick the best ones. Well 2Gb of Ram and Multitasking is for you.
- Cooking dinner at home? You just want to listen to internet radio while checking recipes on the net, well, multitasking is for you again.
Does that look far from what you’re doing all the time with your computer? No too far really, this is why I’ll prefer to get a Tega than a iPad.

You can check their website and reviews on the web, they have been producing industrial tablets/slates for quite a while...
ps. hahah I dont work for them although you could be forgiven for thinking I do.
Also they are several hundred dollars cheaper if you dont need the OS.

*Not Phone Related* - NES Gaming PC - Celebrating 25 Years

So...for those who want to take a break from all the phone stuff, I thought I'd share a small project of mine.
I recently completed a PC build I did back in October and decided to document the progress of the build with three videos (last one, part 3, linked above). I took an old, non-working NES and used it as a case to make a NES PC gaming rig that does one thing - play NES games with the original, unaltered NES controllers. I know that NES PC mods are nothing new and that many have been done before, but it was a fun hobby project. Anyway, let me know what you think!
Here's a few pics of it:

This marvelous idea has inspired me! i am currently making a gamecube controller external hardrive/bluetooth unit...
i just need a bit of help, do any of you guys know where i can get a 2 way usb splitter?
something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/4-Port-Way-U...&otn=3&po=LVI&ps=63&clkid=6892448881617951994
but only 2 way???
if all goes well, ill post a guide on how to make one
(oh, if you know of a three way splitter that could be useful as well, as i am thinking of adding a usb LED)
(oh again, if you know of a four way splitter like the one linked, but with a smaller "convertor box (for lack of a better word)" please link that also, as i can just cut one or two of the usb's off)
hope that made sense.
Nice! I haven't had time to watch the video so pardon if I'm asking a dumb question, but what are the specs of the machine?

yeah, i was thinking about that...
but the coverter box thingy is a bit big to fit inside the gamecbe controller, and if its outside, it looks a bit tacky

EDIT: i have it sorted now, im going to get the 4 way and just use a mini bluetooth dongle and mini usb drive, the other two will exit through the bottom of the gamecube controller, so as to make it a two way usb hub AS WELL AS a bluetooth and external hardrive unit

The specs are:
Intel E5300 @ 2.8GHz
Geforce 9300 onboard chip
40GB Intel SSD
150W Pico PSU
It's waaaaay overpowered for just playing NES games, but it barely manages to run Hyperspin (the front-end, aka the menu) with all the bells and whistles (it's very CPU intensive as the entire menu is based around flash). So that's the reason for having such a strong GPU/CPU. I could have possibly gone with another front-end that isn't so intensive, but I really like Hyperspin and the options it gives you for building out a menu.
For the SNES build, I'm going with a sleeper look, which means I can't cut holes in any of the case - and that means I need to have a passively cooled motherboard and proc that won't overheat. So I'll need to find a way to lower the specs while still managing to run Hyperspin at a decent framerate. It'll be interesting when I start it - I love these kinds of projects.
Flash should be hardware accelerated, so it should be mainly dependent on your gpu. It is overkill for NES, but it is pretty sweet still.
anyone know where i can buy a cheap (broken preferably) xbox original online?
ebay doesnt give any results (only broken xbox 360's)
any ideas?

Really? Thought flash was CPU. Is flash run via DXVA now? Didn't seem like it on the box. Oh well, regardless, Hyperspin takes up a lot of CPU if you turn all its features on. But it's a great front-end.

hmm... you could always try a via nano-itx motherboard (120mm by 120mm) for your sleeper build, the one with the 1.5ghz processor might work well as it's graphics chip supports hdmi output...
i just think it may be hard to fit a mini-itx board in the case without cutting some holes at the back.
EDIT: oh, what mobo did you use in your nes?
I used a ZOTAC GF9300-I-E. Yeah, for the SNES build I'll need to go smaller perhaps. I won't be able to start on it for a few months though. But I already have a pretty good idea for what the video will be like. Should be fun!

my arguments for gigabyte:
much faster cpu (atom equivalent of an i3)
standard 2.5" hdd allows more and cheaper upgrade options (hybrid hdd anyone?)
dual usb with one superspeed
mouse pad, mouse buttons and scroll buttons make it much easier to navagate freely, also certain combos will send certain commands like C+A+D
looks really sexy, pretty much like the hp slate
thoughts: if it had atleast 720p resolution and atleast dx10 supported gpu id be all over this thing
summary: has ehh hardware compared to msi but ease of use seems exponentially bettermy arguments for msi:
slightly cheaper
ips display at 720p+ (you sexy beast)
lower tdp cpu
radeon 6 series gpu with dx11 absolutely OBLITERATES any atom gma (the ability to do some light gaming like bejeweled and heavy weapon would be nice, at more than 15 fps would be even better)
double the ram at a higher data rate
msata insures low power consumption
dual cameras
gps (cuz why not)
slightly bigger battery
dedicated C+A+D button can be pretty useful
tpm security module
thoughts: if i could find a better cpu to upgrade to i could live with everything else and would buy this thing in a heartbeat but lack of mouse controls, super slow cpu and lack of i/o ports are a real turn off
summary: has some fairly impressive hardware for a tablet, but the ease of use seems lacking compared to the gigabyte
I can see where this will end up, so ib4l

oh yes i know ive been here since i found the place back when the og evo came out so i know that people can be really helpful... when it comes to phones. other things tend to be not so much. atleast in my experience.
I had no intention of being a troll - it was early in the morning here, I briefly skimmed the OP and had visions of it going exactly the same way the recent Mac thread has gone, turning into a haters vs fanboys outing.
To be honest, I would also recommend waiting for one of the 'Surface' tablets running Windows 8. 7 just isn't designed for tablets and is still really difficult to utilise without a keyboard - I speak from experience as I am an EPoS engineer by trade and spend half my life using both XP & Win 7 based touch-screen PC systems in my job.
I have played with 8 and it just looks much better designed and far more ideal for the Tablet market.
The arm version of the surface would have a processor that is similar to those of android tablets and the ipad right now. You wont be able to run any current windows programs on it. However the pro version of the surface should run older windows programs, in addition to the metro apps. The pro version will most likely be a bit pricey though.

Yes I just looked it up and saw that and that is my problem with new Surface machines. RT is supposed to start out at $600 but basically is a glorified WinMob/WinPhone, and since its ARM it will most likely use SOCs which means no CPU or RAM expansion options. On the other hand 8/Pro will be fully compatible with everything and use standard mobile components, but starting at $1000+ is way out of my price range. Again, I have an expensive ass laptop for the power computing area of my life, I just wanted this as a thing that is more mobile and just to mess around with it. And as far as the keyboard thing, SimonTS, a $15 generic mini USB keyboard case from Amazon can easily solve that problem.
I guess when I end up being able to buy something Ill go for the Gigabyte because of the body, ports, and the couple of accessories offered by Gigabyte compared to the... nothing that MSI offers (that Im aware of at least). I bet I can replace the screen on it too hopefully.

Large capacity MP3 player >150GB

My 160GB Ipod Classic has finally died T_T The battery's not holding a charge at all, I'm thinking of getting it repaired but I'm worried something else'll fail shortly as it's had heavy use. I've been researching alternatives but all the threads etc I could find are a few years old, so what's the situation these days, are there any decent/inexpensive MP3 players with at least 150GB of storage out there? Any sort of mini hard drives with screens or anything? Or is the ipod classic still my best bet? Cheers

Obvious troll is obvious.
If you don't care about bulk archos has some massive pmps. I have a 4.8 in 250 gb but I can't use it for anything other than in my car just because its so large.
Cheers, good shout - what do you think of the Archos 48?
It's alright. Nothing special (and the resistive screen sucks after being spoiled by capacitive screens), charging (through a proprietary cable) is slow and the GUI sucks, but you can't beat the price for the capacity (I got my 250gb for like 170 a year ago).
I should add that the battery is fairly long lasting from a full charge and that in order to play movies and certain file formats (you'll be fine with mp3s) you have to buy format packs (which I find to be an obnoxious and money hungry practice that Archos should be ashamed of).

Yeah 500GB for £100, seriously tempted - £26 (independent site) to repair my 160GB iPod but like I said, something else could just fail as it has received heavy use. Had a look and it doesn't look like there are any ROMs for the 48, would be nice to pump it at least up to froyo... from the dimensions the 48 doesn't look too bulky, still pocketable?
Pocketable-maybe, but the weight is a pretty big factor. Not to mention that it's almost an inch thick (doesn't sound that bad until you have it right in front of you. I can post pictures for comparison to my Xoom or Nexus S if you're familiar with either.

I'm not 100% but I can guess what the nexus is like - pictures would be appreciated buddy!
Alright, I had to take the pictures with my Xoom so the size is a bit wonky but here you go.

Cheers, don't seem to be loading though?
*EDIT* Also is there a model (that's similar in price/storage space) that you'd recommend over the 48?

If you're on mobile it might take a while (they're in UXGA resolution).

Cheers, I see what you mean about the thickness... doesn't look much thicker than my classic though thinking about it? Guess the speaker on it's crap.
Has anyone come across any custom ROMs for the 48?
