Not trying to be dumb but i been using JF 1.5 for like 6 month (completely forgot about xda and android stuff for about 4 month since i busy with school).
So now i got JF 1.5 and i want the new Cyanogen V 4.2.3.1 since i did read alot and seem like the best one for now.
And so i did try to install......for about 4 HOURS.
I tried :
- JF 1.5 -> Cyanogen V 4.2.3.1 = Stuck at the boot screen
- JF 1.5 -> cm-recovery-1.4.img -> signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip -> Cyanogen V 4.2.3.1 = After boot screen (when it suppose to come on the welcome screen) it just turn blank...the screen is one but completely blank.....
- I WIPE again -> HTC ADP 1.6 DRC83 -> Cyanogen V 4.2.3.1 = Samething, blank page.
So what did i do wrong? I did do the install of the recovery Img 1.4 and the ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip.
I did wipe everytime i install something.
Sorry for the bothering and noob asking for help but i do need help....i tried my best and sitted here for 4 hours already
And talking about those Guide on WIKI, i tried to follow all of them and still.......only thing i didnt try is reflash, unroot, root again and do the install of new ROM
Is your SD card partitioned correctly?
You need:
FAT32
EXT 2/3/4
Linux-swap
Do you have those three partitions?
If so, did you wipe your EXT partition?

Omg, i only have 1 partition
It Fat32 i believe and i dont know how to make the other
i have the Class 6 8GB though, what shud i do?
Quick update.
I just follow the Stock to Cyanogen Post to upgrade.
I reflash the whole phone, root then Cyanogen again with format 3 Partition of Fat32 (7000MB), ext2 (700MB) and Linux-swap (150MB) and it still doesnt work, stuck at boot screen this time.....i really really dont know what to do now, i tried everything
alright buddy, you don't need to have any ext or linux swap partitions to run cyanogenmod
just make sure you have his recovery image, 1.4, or amon ra's recovery flashed on your phone
now you might as well just flash the haykuro "death/danger" spl to repartition your phone's internal memory. flash the radio before the spl
now go into recovery and wipe data/cache,
follow cyanogen's directions on how to upgrade
flash the adp 1.6 htc recovery image file from the htc site, DO NOT REBOOT
immediately flash the latest cyanogenmod update on top of that, reboot,
it'll give you some stuff about writing the radio, just let it do it's thing
now you're done, boot up
and give it some time.
first boot takes a little bit more
enter your credentials into your phone, let it sync
then reboot again, it lets everything soup together

I just did the exactly same thing u said and it get past the Boot G1 Screen, then pas the Cyanogen Screen then it get stuck at a blank screen again, what wrong with that?
Since you're able to get to the "Cyanogen" screen -- do you have adb installed on your computer? A logcat of what's going on would be useful.
Alternatively; try flashing the "illegal" version of the newest Cyanogen ROM -- the "single flash" update. However, do it a little differently than you'd otherwise expect.
With the old JF 1.5, install Cyanogen Updater from the Market. Download any update -- doesn't matter what; you won't be flashing it.
Download the single-flash version of Cyanogen's actual ROM from the developer forum; and then dump it into the same folder that the CM Updater app dumped to. From within the contextual menu of the CM Updater app, choose "existing update" -- and then flash the single-update version.
//SOMETIMES//, flashing a ROM via the CM Updater will produce different results than flashing it "manually". I have no explanation for why this is, but I /have/ seen it happen.
Hi there,
I too am running JFV1.51 and wish to change to Cyanogen 4.2.15.1.
I have the iamage from HTC but nothing changes when I flash it and attempt to immediately flash Cyanogen over it?
Did you have any luck in resolving this issue/
Many thanks!
You guys that are having issues need to use ddms or adb shell logcat to see whats going on.
Going from Cupcake to Donut is going to change a lot in your phone and will take several minutes to complete. Most of which is in Framework. That Android boot animation that pops up is in there so thus it may seem like it's stuck at the G1 logo. Also you should consider flashing your phone to the newest radio (2.22.19.26I or 2.22.23.02).
ok this is what you really do lol no if ands or butts to this method.
goto www*androidhustler*blogspot*com and scroll down and search for ( 2010 how to get latest cyanogen mod ) download all apropiate files and begin steps.
let me know how easy these steps are and email me with any questions at: b6gsix#gmail*com

E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
Hi,
Firstly, many thanks!
However, after following this comprehensive and generally straight forward guide I still can't flash the new CM!
I followed all the steps exactly, downgrading to RC7 (I'm in the UK) & re-rooting the phone.
When I reach the stage of flashing Android 1.6 Base Image, the CM ROM & the radio it states:
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
and aborts!!!
I also do not have the option of alt+a only alt+s which is apply sdcard:update.zip
Where am I going wrong? And what should I do?
Thanks,
Joe

If you don't have ALT+A available, you have a recovery loaded other than what the guide says/thinks you should have. Are you using the recovery it suggests? Be it Amon Ra, Clockwork, etc.
Hi,
I was initially running Jesus Freak cupcake 1.5. Now the phone is currently at RC7 and rooted using telnet after starting the whole process again.
I am currently following the guide on the cyanogenmod wiki. I am using the recovery image suggested: CM recovery 1.4 img.
However, when I get to the stage for Flash Android1.6 & CyanogenMod latest I get stuck and states E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip.
All other guides seem to be specific to the US, for example androidhustler. I don't where to go next!
Please help!
Alright.
Title basically explains it all. I'm not an expert at messing around with my phone, but I'm not a novice either.
I do everything through trial and error. My phone has the correct Radio and SPL. Yes, I flashed the Radio before the SPL. The phone isn't bricked because it will go into recovery mode. But apart from that, it's all that it will do.
I was running RA's V1.5.1 recovery. Now it's at JFV1.43.
I think my mistake was trying to update from ADP1 straight into Cyanogens 4.2.7.1.
I had a ADP1 phone and tried to update to Cyanogens 4.2.7.1, and everything just went downhill from there. I never managed to accomplish my set goal, which was to flash and run Cyanogens 4.2.7.1.
Then when that didn't work. I tried downgrading to RC29 and just re-rooting my phone. By this time I was running RA's recovery V1.5.1. That went as planned until I flashed the latest radio and spl and wanted to upgrade to the modified version of RC30. I flashed the RC30 ROM. At this time, it wouldn't get past the blinking Android screen with the bot. I thought it kept on getting stuck there because it required the hard spl. Whether the latest spl and the hard spl are the same thing, I don't know. I flashed the hard spl. That's where my stupidest mistake probably happened. That's when my phone decided it didn't want to go past the G1 screen when rebooting/booting.
Is there anything I can do in order to fix this? And can someone explain to me a proper method of flashing Cyanogens 4.2.7.1 ROM? Is there anyway I can connect with my phone through adb on JFV1.43 recovery and just flash RA's V1.5.1 recovery through there and push a new ROM?
Frustration builds. Lol.
What I want to have on my phone is RA's V1.5.1 recovery with Cyanogen's 4.2.7.1 with the Eclair theme.
Many thanks in advance to whomever decides to grant me some much needed help.
OK, as long as you can still access your Recovery menu then you're not bricked.. so smile lol.
Rememeber, before you install the Cyanogenmod 4.2.7.1 ROM you need to install the HTC 1.6 Dev Rom first.
HTC took it off their website, i have it uploaded on my site...
do this: ( This is for HTC Dream (G1) )
CLEAR YOUR EXT PARTITION or REPARTITION YOUR CARD to get rid of any Incompatible files.
Download CM 4.2.7.1 -> http://www.myhangoutonline.com/downloads/?did=17
Download HTC Dream Image 1.6 -> http://www.myhangoutonline.com/downloads/?did=6
Place them both on the root of your SDCard.
Reboot your phone into recovery mode...
1. WIPE
2. Install HTC Dream Image
3. Hit Reboot when it's done (and keep an eye on the phone!)
4. you will see the little picture with an arrow (radio installation), WHEN YOU SEE THE PHONE REBOOT HOLD THE HOME KEY. It should reboot right back into recovery.
5. Now install the CM ROM
6. Reboot and you're done...
Hope that helps!

I'll try that and see how it goes. One question though, do I rename them to "update.zip" like always, or no? I'm gonna get an sd card reader to follow through with the procedure you gave me.
Thanks a lot.
If you are still showing recovery JF1.43, update your recovery first to either AR 1.5.1 or CM1.4. Once that is done, you won't need to rename anything, just select the update any zip option from recovery.
Dont reboot in between the htc image & cyanogen rom..It even says that on his site..This is what to do..
1. wipe
2. update from and zip the pick the htc image
3.update any zip and pick the cyanogen rom
4.Now reboot
5.should go to recovery and reboot one more time
6.Bam your done and no one got hurt either

Can I do this through the recovery screen console option? (flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.1.img)?

The links posted aren't working for some reason. I tried going to the website to look them up and no go. If I can just get a proper link to download the HTC 1.6 Dev Rom I should be good to go.
I finally got the things I wanted to run.
Many thanks to the people that helped.
Alright guys, I'm finally getting with the times and changing ROMs. The current state of my phone is this:
Model number: HTC Magic
Firmware version: 1.5
Baseband version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
Kernel version: [email protected] )
Build number: kila-user 1.1 PLAT-RC33 126986 ota-rel-keys, release-keys
Now, I have the G1 and I modded it to this shortly after I got it. I'm looking to go to a fast and advanced firmware, but I will need help doing this. I've been out of the loop for a long time (not that I was really ever in it,) so I would like help on how to go back to the stock firmware first and then go to the new firmware. If I can go to the new ROM without going back, that would be better.
I would really appreciate help on how to do this. Also, would you suggest which ROM I should go to? I appreciate it a lot guys, thanks.
If you need anymore information from me, just ask away.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
thats the best guide to follow for rooting the G1
after that i would try cyanogen..
but if your going for speed and still simple
i would go with dwang rom(super clean and fast)
or go with SUPER D rom(dwangs rom with cyanogen kernals)
Sorry for double posting stupid computer started to lag
Well I think my phone is already rooted, isn't it? I have the terminal application on my phone from when I rooted it a long time ago.
Oo well then lol if you have root access you can grab a Recovery img
i suggest Amon Ra RC 1.5.2 flash that
and chose what rom you would like to use..dwang seems to be the most stable at the moment..
so you can get the 1.6 adp-ota then the rom you wanna go with
can wipe the flash 1.6adp after it finishes flash your rom
(cyanogen requies to flash the 1.6dap-ota then flash his rom over it..
I just checked out a video for the dwang ROM and it looks sick. Now, are you positive that I can just grab a recovery image and then do what you said to flash over to that ROM? Also, I'll admit that I'm not the greatest at modding the G1. Would you be able to give me a little more in-depth answer? I'm nervous about bricking it, so I would like a little help if possible . Also, do I need to update the radio or any of that stuff again?
dwang roms is SICK and im loving it few features are missing but can add after
Well are you doing the mytouch(magic) or G1(dream)
im not sure the abouts of mytouch(magice)
but for dream im positive it be ok as most part as i did it already on a few phones with no problems
why i directed you to the cyanogen wiki guide for best instructions if followed
Here is what i did for my g1
I used the Dream.nbh then went to bootloader installed
then gain root user (telnet) flashed Amon-Ra Rc 1.5.2 after i got the 1.6adp-ota and cyanogens(first rom i used) you can grab dwangs rom if you want to go there
put them on the root of sdcard then turned off phone held the home button then turn on phone waited to Recovery image to come on
i did this
1.Wiped Wipedata/factory reset
2. flashed from anyzip flashed the 1.6 ado-ota(it will say reboot but dont)
3.flashed Cyanogens Rom
4.rebooted
5.then take me back to Amon-ra RC and rebooted again
and waited for the rom to start up and i was on latest Cyanogen rom
this is the way i went.. and works good
-edit sorry forgot to mention make sure sdcard is formatted to fat32
I'm using the G1. Can I just flash directly to dwangs ROM now in my current state, or do I have to get Dream.nbh and install it. Then wipe it and do the rest of that stuff?
Hmm thats a good question..
if you have root access already should just be able to flash to dwangs rom..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567023 can get it there...
For me out of habit i did this
Went to recovery then wipe
then flashed 1.6 adp ota
then flashed dwangs then rebooted! and i was happliy running a fast rom!
and the mod of dwangs SUPER D dwangs rom is a bit faster
When you get to dwangs rom there a few things you might want to flash after your all setup
1.Mod dialer/contact.aok 1.92
2. Phone.apk
Forgot to mention when you flash the 1.6adp-ota in recovery your also updating the radio image an that fun stuff when you reboot the first time after you did all the flashing.. it will take a sec as its writing the radio image.. another reason i keep saying flash 1.6adp
and i kno your fear about bricking the g1 i was jus as worried bout it much as you are...
if feel uneasy about it.. i would follow the wiki instructions from there instead of cyanogen jus use dwangs
Okay, that's awesome. Now, I'm going to do this exactly:
1. Wipe my phone.
2. Rename the ROM file to update.zip.
3. Hold home and power.
4. Update.
Is that correct? I don't need a new SPL, radio, ext of memory card, or anything? Ha.
Sorry for the questions man. I appreciate all the help.
No problem glad to help much as i can..
i would flash Amron-Ra 1.5.2(reason you can partation your sdcard from there!)
also with this recovery image you dont have to rename zips to "update" have option to flash from any zip file
I think dwangs and cyanogen needs new radio (1.6adp-ota)
So i would flash the 1.6 ota to get new radio
then flash dwang
on wiki you can skip the dream.nph part and go to the part where to flash the roms jus replace cyanogens with dwangs
I've got the recovery flashed on here. Now I'm going to find the radio update. Thanks for everything bro. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

thats the right link now
Here ya go these the steps.. replace cyanogen with dwangs.. and should be all GOOD!
Code:
# Turn your phone off.
# Hold the Home button and "End" (power) button to boot to Recovery mode.
# If you wish to have an option to return to your factory settings, select nandroid backup now. If not, continue.
# Press Alt-W (or select "wipe data/factory reset")Press home to confirm
# Press Alt-A (or select "apply any zip from sd")
* signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip
# Press home to confirm and let installation complete --Note that no "I have finished my job" message will appear after it finishes. Attempt to move the trackball once you see "Formatting CACHE:;" if you can move the trackball, it has completed the installation.
# STOP - DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PHONE
# Once again, press Alt-A (or select "apply any zip from sd")
* Select update-cm-4.2.x-signed.zip
# Press home to confirm and let installation complete --Note that no "I have finished my job" message will appear after it finishes. Attempt to move the trackball once you see "Formatting CACHE:;" if you can move the trackball, it has completed the installation.
# When this is complete, reboot your phone by pressing Home & Back.
# Wait. Your phone will say writing radio image and then reboot. This will take a couple of minutes. Be patient!
# If the phone enters Recovery mode after rebooting, press Home & Back again to reboot it once more. You should see the blue CyanogenMod Android logo this time
Okay, my computer is being odd. I was going to put the ROM on the phone to update and before I let it finish moving the file completely to my phone, I quit out of USB mode. I didn't know this because I was excited to update. Well I went to update and then it froze so I restarted the phone by pulling out the battery. Now when I try to take the file out of my phone to put it back in again completely, the folder says it isn't responding. What can I do?
if you got a usb adapter use that.. as somtimes using usb via phone can be jumpy .. and if usb adpter dont work may have to reformt sd again(fat32)
You're full of answers bro. Thanks a bunch. I just had to reformat it. I should be running my new ROM shortly .
You said you suggest I update two files. Why do you suggest that? Are they important?
Problem solved.
Try to do a wipe and if you have the
signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip flash it again
then try to flash dwangs Rom
If not may have to start completely fresh..but let me double check on that problem..
edit-
Lol ok thats good what you do?
I wiped and entered some stuff in the console. Not sure which one helped, but I'm good now. Ha.
Thanks a bunch for your help bro.
Your welcome glad to be of help as much as i can...
And hope your running dwangs Rom...
and if want to get a lil faster speed look for SUPER D[ dwangs rom with cyanogen kernal..
Ok, I'm guessing I misunderstood something. I'm a "noob" so bear with me...
here's what I did.
I was running cm v 4.2.9.1 and decided to try and upgrade to the latest version. I wiped and reflashed and got 4.2.14.1 running, but I felt it was slow (the reason I didnt use any other new version), so I came here looking to see any new roms.
I decided KiNgxKxlicK AOSP 2.1 rom looked cool, so I downloaded it and flashed it (yes I wiped first). I'm guessing this is where it went wrong. The rom took 30 mins to finally boot to home (longest ever) but the sweet nexus screen made it easier to bear. I DID NOT do anything with an spl or any radio (that part still kinda confuses me to be honest). I'm guessing this is why I am in the predicament that I am.
The KiNgxKxlicK AOSP 2.1 rom loads fine, but was VERY slow. I decided I'd just go back to cm v 4.2.9.1. I went to wipe and reflash, but the G1 screen never disappeared. I let it load for about 30 minutes and decided that was a bit ridiculous before removing the battery (mind you, it never got past the T Mobile G1 screen). I was, however, able to reflash KiNgxKxlicK AOSP 2.1 rom and run it. This is all I am able to do. When trying to reflash cyonagen it just hangs on the G1 screen.
I'm a noob so I don't know what went wrong or what I missed.
Can someone PLEASE help me out here and tell me what I need to do to fix this. Thanks
Additional Notes:
Can't get to settings running KiNgxKxlicK AOSP 2.1 AT ALL, and a lot of programs Force Close on the rom.
Thanks for any help/input you guys can provide.
Thanks
Do you have Amon Ra recovery?
No I do not believe so, as I am not exactly sure what that is?
UPDATE: I should also note I checked my SPL and Radio, both were very old (as I realized I followed an OLD guide when I rooted my phone)
I upgraded to the latest radio and SPL and still have the same problem...except King's rom doesn't force close when I go to "settings".....thats about the only difference (still slow/laggy, lots of programs still FC)
When you boot into recovery (holding home+power) it should tell you what recovery image you are using. (i.e. mine says v1.5.2 down at the bottom of the screen) I ran into a similar issue when I attempted to jump between roms without taking all the appropriate steps; all I did was reformat my sd card, wipe the phone, and reflashed my rom and it worked great after that.
I tried reformatting my sd card, even re-partitioned it and I'm still having the same problems:
CM wont get past g1 screen after flash, King's rom still pretty slow....
What do you gys recommend I do next? This is getting really frustrating
1st: Check if youre Formatting is correct
2nd: Wipe EVERYTHING
3rd: Re-Format
4th: Try downloading the ROM again. It could be an issue with the ROM's
5th: Check you have proper radio and SPL (1.33.2005 and 26I)
6th: Pray
Try them all hope one of them works for you dude.
why is it that that 99% of newbs are on cyanogen
@Macrophage001
1. how do I CHECK my formatting to see if its correct?
2. Doesn't formatting do this automatically? I also "wiped" in recovery...
4. Not the roms, I have multiple CM roms, one of which I've had for some time with no problems and have re-flashed over and over
5. As stated above, I did not have the latest at first, i did upgrade to the latest radio and hakyuro(sp) spl to no avail.
@zachattack052
We've all been told it's THE BEST, much before even making the decision to root. I honestly thought CM was the only rom available, that's how much he's praised around here and other forums.....it's just what everyone tells us.
Here's what i suggest you do:
1> Download Amon_RA's recovery from here
here is a link to his thread
2> Transfer the file you just downloaded to the root of your sd
use this code to mount your sdcard from recovery console itself if needed
Code:
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
3>Disconnect usb and reboot to recovery (keep home pressed while powering on) or just type
reboot recovery if you are already in recovery console
4> Flash Amon's recovery:
Code:
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img
when complete, reboot to recovery again
5>Partion your sd using amon's recovery (All data on SD will be lost so backup if needed)
[Alt+P] then [Alt+0] or scroll down using the trackball or the volume keys
follow the prompts, set your swap-size to 96 MB (use the vol keys) and 512 MB ext2. when done use the back button to go back and reboot
The above step will give you the partitions required to run any rom. Please make sure you meet the radio and SPL requirements before flashing a rom.
6>Transfer the latest CyanogenMod rom to your SD and flash it.
I would suggest that you try bbuchacher's SuperD rom (it requires Haykuro's Danger SPL)
make sure you flash the radio first and then the SPL if you dont already have it
P.S. When anyone says full wipe, they mean doing a factory reset, wiping your ext partition and wiping the dalvik-cache. These are the first 3 options in Amon_RA's recovery's wipe menu
what i would do....
make sure you flash the HTC recovery files first before you flash the CM rom
go for the defanged version of HTC
so...(once u have amon ra's latest recovery installed)
wipe everything

1. how do I CHECK my formatting to see if its correct?
@zachattack052
We've all been told it's THE BEST, much before even making the decision to root. I honestly thought CM was the only rom available, that's how much he's praised around here and other forums.....it's just what everyone tells us.

1: Go to recovery console and type parted. A list will show up with your fat32,ext2/3/4,linux-swap settings.
2: Yes it does but you can never be too sure.

After installing the RA recovery, yes. I was running CM Recovery though when I began this thread, which is why I was not able to wipe dalvik
I would like to install CM7 ROM on my Milestone which already has a GOT Froyo 2.2.1. What are the steps I need to follow without bricking my device?
Hi, take a look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932196
Install latest Androidiani OpenRecovery can be found here.
It's wise to make a backup using OpenRecovery first before you update.
Copy the latest CM7 build to the folder /sdcard/OpenRecovery/updates
Don't unzip your download.
If you want to use Google Apps i.e. GMail etc. then you need to download this here.
Then reboot into OpenRecovery and scroll down and Wipe Data / Factory Reset
Go to Apply Updates and choose your freshly downloaded zip file.
Then install the gapps file the same way.
Reboot your phone and voila.
You understand that everything you do, is at your own risk off course. Always use common sense!
Does this also work on Android 2.1?? or is there another procedure for 2.1?
I'm running a Milestone A853 on 2.1
You can install the 2.2 with a full version and flash with the RSDLite then you can put the 2.3.3 cyanogenmod.
