Running the latest Super D but I find the Eclair browser entirely slow and unusable on the G1. Is there anyway I could use good old loccy's better browser with it? I installed it over the eclair with SU file manager but it just force closes when I open it.
Do you have adb? If so, do this:
adb remount
adb push C:/(location)/Browser.apk /system/app/Browser.apk
If that doesn't work, just install an old version of SuperD that includes it, use an app called system app backuper to back up the browser, flash 1.11, download system app backupper, and reinstall. But if its purely speed you want, you should try Opera Mini 5. The fastest browser ever, I used it on a road trip and the whole time I had gprs speeds but they loaded as fast as if I was in full bars 3G.

I could not find any information about this in the forums anywhere.
I apologize if it has already been discussed.
My favorite feature in Hero is the browser's ability to prevent websites from showing the mobile view.
I know many sites have a choice for this, but some of them don't.
Has anyone come up with a way to get the stock cupcake browser to fool websites into thinking it is not a mobile browser? Is it even possible?
get loccys browser, it allows you to do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551119&highlight=loccy and much more!
if you cant use adb then just use a file browser such as oi file manager to install, works great!
Thank you for the help.
I have been looking for this forever.
Time to reflash.

It's way easier to install using a file manager than ADB.
Although u can use a fike manager to install apks u cant install system apps like the browser with them. Get SUFBS from the market or get the adb file manager for ur pc. I use the adb manager no need for commands just a few clicks and i can remove and push things at will!
Thanks everyone.
I've already flashed CM 4.0.4 and installed the browser using ADB.
Browser is awesome.
I had this problem to when using cupcake. If you don't have root or want to dal with flashing you can always use a proxy servr also. I used to use youhide.com cuz everytim I went to the ufc website I got the lame mobile site
All I did to install it was download it through my phone browser. Then tap the file in the download manager and installed in seconds.

Again... YES you can. However, it seems only Linda File Manager has the functionality...other file manager's don't. I fooled around with it again today...this time totally removing all browser related files from /system/app, /system/sd/app, and /data/data. I then rebooted and reinstalled Loccy's browser using Linda FM.

I haven't tried downloading it with browser... didn't even think to try it that way. So there are now two ways of doing it on the phone without using terminal or ADB.
I used OI file browser, it worked fine installing the browser!
A lot of system apks can be installed right through linda with no need to push through adb
I always find it easier to use the terminal:
cp /sdcard/blahblah.xxx /system/blah/blah
Hi,
I am switching over to Super D 1.8 from Super D 1.6. I have nandroid the 1.6 and flashed 1.8. How do I move over all my app and other data from 1.6 to 1.8? Also, are the steps the same when switching across different roms such as moving from Super D 1.6 to Eclair?

you can use one of the backup tools from the market, like Backup for root users, and restore them that way, although personally i don;t bother backing up my apps when i use it as they tend to come back a bit buggy when you restore them to another build and don't link up correctly with the market for updates.
you could just re download them - everytning you had before should still be in your downloads section for the market and if you're on wifi it shouldn't take too long (unless you've got hundreds of apps)
or you could be lazy and do what i did - flash 1.8 over 1.6 with no wipe - doesn't always work and definitely not recommended when going from one dev's work to another's, but this upgrade worked fine for me
I usually back them up in a folder on my sd
mkdir sdcard/backup
cp /system/sd/app/* /sdcard/backups
then go in manually and reinstall them plus you will have a backup JIC
Anyone successfully try the Fennec nightly builds on NC stock rooted 1.1v2? Firefox 4 Beta 5 seems like the fastest browser, but it has a bad habit of locking up my Nook. I was hoping to try the Fennec nightly, but can't get it to install via APK. I'm trying to use the nightly build on the Firefox Wiki (can't post links yet).
When I try to install the app via APK, the install starts, continues for 5-10 seconds and then says "Application Not Installed."
I like Dolphin HD well enough, but it hangs for 10-15 seconds sometimes when loading sites. I've tried the other browsers and they all have some issue that makes them not as good as Dolphin HD.
Thanks!
If you have adb installed you could look at the log during the install process and see what the problem might be. If you don't have adb, maybe I can look if you tell where I can grab the APK.

Didn't know about ADB creating a log, so I'll take a look at that. Thanks!
I downloaded the package in the web browser and then used Linda to find and run the APK. It installed successfully and I was able to run it just fine.
Can you try what I did and let us know if it works for you?

Firefox RC on my Nookie Froyo SD card works well for me, too.
I only wish it worked as well on my original Droid- slow as molasses there.
Not Ready For Prime Time Yet
Fennec/Firefox seems to lock me up (running 1.1 Rooted, not overclocked). Also, the add-ons don't seem to install fully, nor can I seem to remove the built-in ones (e.g., Twitter, Wikipedia...) - I guess Mozilla seems to feel that I need those - LOL
Seems to be also a bit bulky just like Firefox for desktop - lots of bloat
just my $0.02
If you don't like Firefox I'd suggest xScope, if you don't need Addons. One of my favorite features with it are the Site-Specific UA options and Chrome like interface. It also has Basic jestures. Left/Right Swipe switches Tabs. Flick Up/Down under Notification Bar to hide it or show it. Pressing Menu hides the Interface for Fullscreen and a Hidden Feature of Double-Tapping at base of Tab to close the Tab(although there is a Tab menu) Also supports Flash plugin, plus Enhanced Copy-Paste ability so you can copy nearly anything on a Webpage.
Free version: Free from Market
Pro version: $2.99 from Market, $0.99 from Amazon Appstore
Pro version gives you screenshots and a few other features.

Tried installing the nightlies via Astro APK and it just won't work. (Nor will the Firefox RC.) It looks like this is because I uninstalled Firefox 4 Beta 5 via Manage Settings instead of via the Market uninstaller. When I go to the Market, it says Firefox is installed when it isn't. If I try to install any version of Firefox, I get the "Application Not Installed" error. I'll have to try it via ADB and see what happens in the log. Just haven't had time yet.
I'm having some trouble getting apps onto my phone. I use the Android SDK to run an emulator at the 1.5 level which has the android market app. I use the android market on the emulator to install apps onto the emulator. I backup those apps on the emulator using Astro and I then use adb to pull the backed up app (apk file) onto my PC.
After this I use adb to push the apk file from my PC to the SD card on my phone. I use Astro on the phone to navigate to the file and install it. At this point a progress bar appears and the screen says "Installing..." but it never finishes. I've waited over an hour and still nothing. I get the same result if I place the apk file on the internal memory (/) instead of on the SD card. I even tried installing directly from my PC using adb and it just sits there.
I'm running Android 2.2 on my phone. I tried setting up a 2.2 emulator with the market app on it but was having some difficulty. Somehow I don't think the emulator should make a difference though.
Any help would be appreciated. For you guys out there without data plans, how are you getting apps onto your phones?
Btw I have the phone set to allow installation of non-market applications.
No takers? I know there's gotta be some people out there without data plans. Hopefully I can figure this out as I don't want to have to go back to Windows Mobile.
In case it matters, I'm using the ROM and Jan 14 240x320 nbh file from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738612.
adb install <filename>
I have a Galaxy Tablet with rooted VZW 2.3.5. I have installed certain .apk's (Google Finance for example) in the /system/app folder with no problem. Other files, such as Opera Mobile, will display an icon but will force close if I open the file. If I install Opera normally. then it will work until the device reboots. I would like to add Opera as a system app in case a factory reset is required. Am I missing a step?
http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/versions/
see here the lastes official opera mobile release.
of course you can copy the app to /system/app if the app doesn´t work.
Thank you for replying. I have a copy of the .apk for Opera and I put it into the correct directory. It is also in the app list afterwards. The problem is that it acts like it is going to open, then it immediately force closes. I have several apps installed this way and those apps work properly.
