Okay, this is bizarre, but I think I have solved the volume key problem. First, I discovered that the volume key problem was oddly related to the USB port. When I put pressure on that port, the volume key would start working again. But I explored further, and it's actually very slight *downward* pressure on the USB port that solves the problem.
So I then just wedged a piece of thin somewhat hard plastic (sliver from a plastic folder) along the top ridge of the USB port, and the volume key now works perfectly.
I think this might also be related to keyboard problems (keys not responsive), because now my keyboard also works perfectly. Can people please test (downward pressure on USB port) and report back?

Hi all - I need help and would appreciate some advice:
My volume key is starting to become unresponsive. At first I thought it was a ROM problem, but it continues with several different ROMs. And if I press the buttons VERY hard, they work.
I presume this is the same basic issue that occurs with the keyboard, but I have it in the volume key.
I am off the warranty. Anyone have ideas/ tricks for how to fix this? I might try a bit of WD-40 for the hell of it.
I have already mapped other keys to control the volume, but I still can't zoom with the camera.
Thanks for any advice.
i too am experiencing the same problem, however i found a solution, pressure on the battery solved this for me....
what i did was put layers of tape on the battery and under the cover...
i guess the hardware becomes worn out after a while, and i dont mean the housing, because i have a brand new housing, i think it lies on the motherboard or the keypad board
this also solves the keyboard letters that never worked too like

I pressed on the battery and it started working again. Still somewhat unresponsive but definitely better. I'll try your tape trick now.

lol i figured that out when certain keys on the keyboard wont work, out of anger i tried to put pressure on the bottom slide by squeezing it with a little more pressure on the top and bottom, then the keys worked, weird huh??
anyway, the volume key happened to give trouble too and the pressure fixed it... so, i have some tape on my battery until i can get some spongy sticky tape to replace it

Yeah, I had noticed some odd things like when I applied pressure laterally across the top, then pressed the volume key, it would be more responsive.
Unfortunately putting pressure on the battery only worked temporarily, and the tape trick did not work. Perhaps my problem is farther along. But I really appreciate the hint. I'll keep messing with it (till I break it )
For what it's worth:
I can solve this problem by putting the charger into the mini-USB and pushing it in hard while having my finger on the other side just below the volume button. After this the volume button works normally for a while. That's the only consistent fix so far.
So, one thing I can conclude is that it's not the volume button itself, but some connection inside???
I've had my Xperia for a year and 4 months. I'm surprised others aren't reporting this. Anyone else with volume button problems?

I have send my phone for repair for two times now because of this problem. When I get it back, the volume buttons are working for two days.
I also have problems with the the following keys: Sym, au, shift, @, Z, X and the blue button. But when I press time for like a 100 times they start working again... grazy

It's tricky sorting out whether it's a hardware or software issue, because it comes and goes. But I am convinced that mine is a hardware issue.
Try the trick I mentioned above. I also just pressed down on the whole keyboard hard in different places. It's been working for 6 hours straight!
[I also wonder if the SE repair people cause the volume button issue. I send mine in for repair 2 or 3 times, including for the same keyboard problem you mention]

i too have the same issue. pushing down on the usb port seemed to have fixed my volume keys better than adding tape under the battery cover.
sigh.. i don't know how much longer this device is gonna last me..
You need to massage your XPERIA every now and then to smoothen the electricty flow throughout the circuit board. Think of it as a human, hmm... just kidding lol

Having the USB port on the opposite side of the keys, means slight pressure nudges the board towards the silicone membrane that is on the inside of the hardened metallized shell that forms the volume key itself. The way it is folded inside means that over time it will mould itself to the housing, hence partial usability problem.
A word of warning: nudging the USB port will dislodge the port itself off the main PCB and then you will have a much bigger problem than partially working volume key.
Tape under the battery cover is a gimmick.

Thanks for the explanation! Although without a diagram it's a bit hard for me to follow. What's the basic problem? The connection to the volume key gets dislodged?
When I nudge the USB port downwards, it's literally about half a millimeter, so it's hard for me to imagine that that could brick the USB port; then again, I know nothing about the internals.
I've had the "permanent nudge" going for a couple months without problems, but I will report back if something worsens.

Another problem that i have is that my usb port doesnt recognize when its plugging in the computer,so i dont have active sync or mass storage,only usb charging...any ideas??thanks in advance!

I have a HUGE problem My Physical Keyboard is acting up to the point where i had to unroot thinking it was going to fix it and now im stuck at the google signup stage without been able to press the letter P cause it types like 6 letters together..... i was on google all night last night looking for the solution and saw many other people having the exact same problem Heres what the keys do:

Sounds like hardware issues. I experienced something similar with a G1 that had minor water damage. If the damage is due to liquid, attempt to rice-dry the phone. Worse case, open up the device and make sure the keyboard is able to make proper contact as needed.
Either way: This is a hardware issue.

I have the very same issue, but I changed the housing plus keyboard recently.
I read on this forum sometimes twisting, shaking the house can cure it. So it is probably a loose connector problem. It is possible the phone was dropped or something end the connector got loose because of it...
I am sure this is a HW error and nothing to do with the ROM.

This is a hw issue that I fixed, the cable that goes from the keyboard to the circuit board comes loose easily. Tightening this cable ( make sure the little side tabs on the ribbon are up against the connector its going into, that will ensure its far enough in and located properly). The wires on this ribbon cable are very small and easily get off a little making the keyboard erratic or not work at all. Also run some alcohol on a q-tip over the keyboard to make sure its clean. You will be shocked how much crap comes off the keyboard especially if you smoke. Also make sure there is no liquid between the membrane covering the board and the buttons. I can turn on the milestone with the power button but when the OS has booted up it becomes unresponsive, if i keep pressing it it sometimes goes to the power off menu but besides from that it does not work
also i can no longer boot into the bootloader but recovery still works, the last rom i installed was the cronos rom with the included kernel, i used this rom for most of the day and it was fine untill i got home
hopefully someone can help
so...no one has any idea what i can do?
Hi silvacrest, I know this is a very old post (in Internet years), but have you (or somebody else) by any chance found a fix for the problem you described? My Milestone running CM7.2RC1 just started to present those same symptoms.

I have the same problem, started an hour ago, i don't know why, someone please help!
Try taking the battery, SD, and SIM out and using a can of compressed air (NOT an air compressor machine, those pull tons of moisture out of the air and can cause serious damage to your phone) on every nook and cranny of the device. Around and in the headphone port, around the power button, everywhere inside the battery compartment, etc. You'd be amazed at what problems dust can cause.

Don't recommend this.
You will break the button for good and you'll need to open your phone, well if think you already need to do that.
The milestone button is composed of a thin foil glued to a metallic case, the glue gets old and the adherence with time will decrease and the foil will get dislocated from it's location. This is why your buttons won't work anymore.
If you use compressed air will probably break the button. I have fixed mine by putting a little thin foil of duct tape after I put the foil button in place.

Hi i2gh0st, in my case, the milestone now sometimes acts as if the power button was pressed, long or short press, waking up the device, displaying the menu or even boot when the phone is off.
You think this behavior could correspond to the foil problem you described?
I don't think so, the button should not work at all, unless it got stuck on press mode. Anything is possible its a ****y button if you look at it from an engineering way.
When I assembled my phone last time I noticed the volume up didn't work, so I opened it again and I found the foil glued to another place instead of its location. So everything started to make sense why buttons break down.
Sorry if I don't really make myself understood, I'm not that good at technical English.

power button: Too recessed and flat, to the point where I now have to use my fingernail to power on the device.
volume button: Flimsy to the point where I can literally slide it up and down. I can also hear it jingle when the device vibrates.
Backcover Flimsy, moves around too much and is never tightly secured.
hardware: When I unplug my device from the charger and the screen is getting ready to time out, it flashes green, then times out... (this looks like it's going to create bigger issues down the road)
Power button: 1 in 20 HD7's I have exhibited the behavior you mention. It went away however. I would advise against using your fingernails if at all possible.
Volume Button: Again, 1 in 20 have this, and unfortunately it's the one I carry around. Two other HD7's I personally used did not have this.
I'd try to get it replaced if I were you.
I'm 2 for 2 on the first two annoyances (power and volume button).
I'm getting it replaced again (for the third time) tomorrow morning. I've also noticed these problems with the store models at various T-Mobile stores.
If I have the same problem with my third device, I'm returning it and getting my refund. Omnia 7, here I come.
Hmmm... I don't care much for the power button placement, but I haven't seen any of the other things you mentioned.

regarding issue #1, how did the problem go away? did some mechanism inside shift causing the power button to pop out more? just wondering?
i also have the loose battery cover. very annoying.
also about the screen... havent seen this mentioned before. i have a slight gap at the left and right edges of the screen where it meets the chrome-ish border. its pretty easy for particles to get stuck in there. compared to the hd2, this gap is pretty noticeable.
I thought I was the only one with these issues lol, figured the recessed power button was just a design oversight

Seriously? I checked a batch of HD7 in malaysia, and exceptionally, all of them had this issue. You're just so lucky you dont have it

I knew I wasn't crazy in thinking this was an issue only I was experiencing.
I've also read several phone reviews, and a lot of the reviewers mentioned about the power button being recessed and stating frustration waking up the device.
I don't know how HTC can fluff up something so important. I mean, what good is a product if you can't power it on; wake it up? One would think they would put emphasis on having a solid foundation on the power button.
Melcali: Yeah, on one phone the power button managed to become flushed, to the point the user had to use their fingernail (even though i found it easy to turn on with the flat of my finger, almost like it was capacitive). However, next day it had 'popped out' a bit and had become less recessed and hasn't been a problem for him since.
daango: In addition to what Shu posted, using your fingernail is likely going to cause you to press the button in harder than it needs to be, which would likely cause the button to be crammed in more and more over time. If it can't be prevented, it can't, I'm just advising against it.
I've got two unopened spares. I'm going to crack them open and see if the volume button jiggles.

Honestly, I don't think it can be helped. Maybe my fingers are too round or something, but using my fingernail seems like the only option right now. I might try adding layers of tape on the button so its easier to press but idk yet... it might take away from the aesthetics

All five units I've come across so far -- my defective original (corrupted memory), my current one, a second defective one (also corrupted memory), its replacement, and an in-store demo phone -- have the same issues:
Recessed power button
Very difficult to press camera button (basically useless)
Loose volume rocker (the case opening is about 0.8 mm too long for the rocker, so it moves around)
Imperfect battery cover fit (the plastic cover flexes from the opening process, so usually doesn't fit perfectly)
Weak screen support in bottom-right (press a bit on the search key and you'll see waves on the LCD)
On the two that I've had long enough to use, the clear coat on the kickstand is flaking off, and the Windows Phone logo, which was barely visible to begin with, has almost completely faded away on one of them.
Kind of sad that HTC screwed up so badly given that the HD7 is a barely-modified HD2, which was among the best-built phones on the market.

wow, you have had a lot of problems. I'm still on my original hd7 since second week of november.
1. power button is slightly recessed, but no problems pushing it with my finger (not nail)
2. camera button does have some orange on it, but it functions properly.
3. volume buttons work fine, maybe a little slide to the rocker, but doesn't effect controls
4. no flaking of clearcoat, no wp7 logo coming off, no lcd discoloration no matter how hard I press on the search or back buttons.
5. Back cover fits properly. I haven't had much reason to pull it off after initial placement of sim card, thanks to phone not constantly freezing. There is a slight gap where the back cover meets the smaller cover.
What are you subjecting your phones to???
I agree the hd7 build quality might not be iphone, but it's holding up well for me. It's not like we have a lot of choices on t-mobile, the dvp has way more problems at this point.
amb9800 speaks the truth. I went through 3 different units that had defects to varying degrees. I had similar issues with the EVO as well. HTC are notorious for shoddy craftsmanship.
I have the same problems they started AFTER my 30 days .. So i havent tryed to go and change at my local T-Mobile!! Is there any loop in the contract or something that would let me change it for anither phone and pay difference/get a refund xD

hey guys well im just about starting to enjoy then xperia z ive just a couple of questions
on the usb charge port there seems to be some light leakage (when flap open) just woundering if anyones is the same (need to be in dark room)
and my power button seems to be a bit wobbly not stupid just a bit
only ask as there 2 things im worried about letting water in :silly:

I have the same leak, I don't think that's a problem, however the power button seems fine.
That's not a problem, the port is so close to the screen, you can actually see the backlight when the cover is open.
The button is wobbly on every device, it was designed this way - it has to rotate a little bit to let the water dry out easily. It won't leak, no worries.
As long as your covers are firmly closed, you can submerge your phone and nothing will happen

Hi everyone, my Nexus 6 has been behaving weirdly from a week or so, I had the same problem months ago but it stopped happening and now it's back again: sometimes the power/lock button stops working. Like right now I'm typing this and I can't lock the phone by pressing the button but I've to wait 1 minute so it locks automatically, I can't keep reproduce the problem it just happens randomly. Another thing I noticed is that once it locks automatically it starts working again.
I'm on chroma rom, lean kernel and flashed viper4android and xposed.
Any way to troubleshoot this when it happens again? Are there any logs which could tell what the problem is when it happens again?
I think the first thing to do would be to diagnose whether it is a hardware or software issue. If you are willing, you could try flashing back to pure stock and see if it still happens. Then you will know whether it is a hardware or software problem.
Happened to me several times on an older version of Chroma. Two versions ago I think. I haven't had it happen since updating to the latest version.

I guess it's a software issue as you're using custom ROM. I'll recommend you to flash stock firmware and see if the issue continues or not. If continues then ask for a replacement
It stopped happening by flashing the latest Chroma build.
Nevermind it still happens from time to time.. I really don't know what is causing this
Which logs could give me an int?

I have this same problem with mine. I thought maybe it was the case... And removing it seemed to help but it would still do it without the case. Its very rare. My gut instinct tells me its software. If it were hardware I think it would be more pronounced.
I will continue to monitor and update this thread.

My own stock based ROM. I think its a firmware flaw.
Only happens rarely.
I had gotten rid of it for a while with a fresh install of chroma but I had to restore the phone to stock and then reinstalled the largest version of Chroma and its back with a vengeance. Seems every time I wake my phone from deep sleep there is a couple second delay before the power button turns the phone on.
Disabling ambient display altogether seems to have fixed my issue.
You could try MeanPop too, he actually designed the ROM so it doesn't deep sleep just turns down the CPU max frequency and some other stuff.
Check the ribbon connection
Check the ribbon connection from the power and volume buttons.
I had the same issue, but with the volume down button. Tried cleaning the button connection, etc, no success. Then I noticed when I had the back off that the power and volume up buttons would stop working when I wiggled the ribbon. On closer inspection of the TINY ribbon latch, I discovered that the top of the latch was loose, and one of the microscopic metal connection prongs was missing. Pressing the ribbon down on the bottom metal prong from the top with tweezers resulted in a perfectly functioning button. So I carefully bent the prong on the far right slightly to the left to cover the spot where the prong was missing, covered it with thermal putty tape, and reattached the back. So far, so good.
You don't have to remove any screws to do this, but make sure you heat the back cover with a heat gun or blow dryer before trying to remove the back, or you'll likely rip the top of this ribbon latch clean off, because it is in contact with the adhesive on the back cover.

@MZO that's might be the solution. At first, my volume key down wasn't working properly and after dropping it, the power also isn't working. Ribbon cable design is awkward and I am sure it's loose.
