Hey all,
As the Captivate becomes more popular, I'm seeing more and more ROMs pop up. Problem is, I can't quite figure out the differences between most of them. They all seem to have the exact same features.
Currently on the front page I see:
Cognition
Perception
AXURA
Assonance
di11igaf's ROM
eSPyeL's ROM
As I look through the features, most of it looks pretty similar. So my question is, can anyone break down the key differences between the ROMs? While we're at it, maybe we can discuss the different kernels too?
This belongs in Q & A not in development please!
We need to keep this area clean for development threads only.

Ugh, sorry. I feel like a dumbass.

Of course you are too late, look, that other guys has flames in his sig, you know he means business when flaming! lol
Anyway, read the OP on each rom, they all have different things
To the Q&A!!
Thecoolestcow has a good point... plus 90% of the posts in the dev threads are 'omg I can't wait'/'hey good job'/'wah wah im a noob' .
Seriously...1000 pages on a dev thread... that's beyond useless.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
More effective thread locking please.
Could we have something besides community flaming to deter the junk posters?

I make it a point to come to Q&A and try and help.
The problem is the overwhelming number of ZOMG WUT DU I DOOOO threads that push valid questions down to oblivion.
410 views and nobody has answered his question.
As far as I know (which may contain incorrect information), each rom is built off the same base rom. There are captivate based frameworks and i9000 based frameworks. Then there are kernels and models.
Some roms emphasize stability, they do not use the latest overclocked kernels, they stick to stock filesystems etc. Other roms emphasize the latest breakthroughs in Galaxy S modifications (1200-1600mhz OC/UV, speedtweaks, filesystem changes). Another rom may emphasize reduced-bloat, everything is stock but theres no crapware. And on top of it all, everyone mixes and matches kernels and modems (but most are on JK3 and i9000 Kernels, though most use SeitroN's and DG has his own). On top of all that, developers apply themes that they like (all of which you can customize yourself).
I hope that helped. I haven't researched deeply into each rom, but this is just what I've deducted.
I started a new thread asking for ROM suggestions that met specific criteria... no where did i ask for a ROM without issues.
I got a few suggestions (most were "I like X" and not what i was after) and then the moderator locked the thread with the answer:
Your best bet is to try a few roms and stick with the one you like best. Most of the custom roms are good but to ask for something that has no issues when they are being built off a port and not Captivate source code is a bit of a stretch. There are no promises with custom roms, that is just the way it is.
So what good is the QA section if i Can't ask which ROMs support Exchange, BT, etc. I have tried a bunch that don't but now that there are 20 or so, there must be one that fits my needs.
I don't usually call people out, but closing a thread in Q/A when there is all kinds of other stuff going on is silly.
Do we have new rules for the Q/A section? Apparently soliciting advice on specifics is offensive to some. If it was closed because people can't answer the question - then you are punishing the OP.
I am a mod on other sites, and i am surprised this thread was closed with such impunity.
I guess this thread will be closed or deleted soon too. But thanks for reading.

1. All ROMs may not work the same on all hardware. So try them out to find out which suits u best.
2. If u have any issues, ask in the ROM specific thread preferably.
3. Read the ROM thread. Generally in the OP or in a post or two that follow, all the things included in the ROM are listed, along with anything that doesn't work. That should take care of u knowing if the ROM u r looking at has it or not.
Last but not the least, people may not always appreciate a question for which answer is easily search-able, or has been answered already many times, or are present in the ROM thread on page 1. Literally every rom today has the OP or the post following that details what all the ROM has, and where it fails.
I understand the op's concern as he was asking about some specific features which, although important to many users, are usually not addressed in the rom op.
You happen to be a casualty of the war against "which rom is best" posts.
Feel free to start a thread questioning when we will see gingerbread, or speculating on why we have yet to receive froyo though. Those appear much more frequently and are allowed to blossom into flame fests.

Best 2 sentences I've read in a long time.
As to your issue. I agree that you should be able to ask a legitimate question like that. You're not one of those asking which is fastest or which will get me higher quad scores. I'm thinking there's probably not a great deal of people who would have tested all those options either. Like myself, I have no use for Exchange or BT or even GPS for that matter. I can speak for the parts I use, which are the google apps and other things.
I would think that if you want the most complete ROM you should stay close to stock. Right now I think there are only 2 custom ROMs built from the stock Captivate ROM, Cognition and Firefly. Firefly does use an i9000 based kernel/modem, so I don't know if that affects the functionality you're looking for.
When in doubt, just keep loading all the ROMs to test them out.......j/k terrible idea.
Well sense you wanted to call someone out, I replied to you telling why I closed it and if you are a mod on another forum you should understand about asking for info that can be searched for and found with a little research. So lets look at your requirments for a rom that is built from a port and not Captivate Source code.
1. Stable-Most roms
2. Americanized-? the local settings can be set in each rom
3. No FFC stuff- not sure what FC issuses you are talking about.
4. Good sound/voice quality-Love the sound on mine mixed with the sppedmod kernel and vodoo sound app
5. BT support (voice dial would be nice - even with vlingo) 2.2
6. Exchange Support-2.2.1
7. Decent battery- that is all on what you consider decent battery, Mine lasts 12 hours and that is good battery for me
8. 2.2 or 2.2.1-most roms are built off of 2.2.1 there are some that are 2.2
9. Good data-Speeds is what I assume you mean, that is as much carrier as rom based
all this was found with a search, which I see more and more people are not using. This is not a make my phone cool forum. For lack of a better term this is an Research & development Forum.
Might want to Look at the FAQ in the threads that have them to see if you see any issues that is a deal breaker for you.
As for your other thread that is all you were gonna get was I like this this rom or I like that one. We all understand that custom roms are a give and take deal. You want the newest Unofficial stuff then you most be willing to deal with some issues that might come up. If you want something that works 100%, 100% of the time then I would stay stock as there are no promises with custom roms

I also think more should be done about all the questions in general. Move those to q&a and start handing out warnings. This is ridiculous.
At least I am not alone.
How many ROMs are there now? For me to search every single ROM thread (including all change logs) to see if a ROM meets my specific needs is silly.
I hate when people ask "how do I flash back to stock" and this is not one of those questions. I can't type this in the search field "Rom support for 1-10" and get any meaningful hit. And many ROMs link to alternate sites, and you have to view the features there - when they are all listed.... Some don't list email support until you go to the FAQ and it says email.apk was removed.
Again, I am not a newb looking for sympathy - I just want some equality in the heavy hammer. Next time I will title my thread "when will we see gingerbread" and all will be good.

So you think that If a question is posted that can be found with a simple search that a warning should be handed out?
I understand that the Captivate is for alot of people their first smartphone, and can be overwhelming, so new question threads for things that can be searched for are gonna happen.

I remove those threads when I see them come up. As silly as it might be that is what your gonna have to do. If you want a perfect rom your best bet is to learn to make it your self. Do you understand what "from a port" means. That means it was not made for our device and that there will be issues. The Dev try to fix them but like I said there is no 2.2 Captivate source code to build from so they do the best they can. Look I am not trying to come across rude but all these threads asking for this and that and "wtf this doesnt work" Is really starting to get on my last nerve. The only advice one can truly give is "Read, read and read some more to make sure you have all your bases covered."
I am not gonna argue the point any longer and will give this thread a few minutes for people to reply before I close it.
+1 Make your own, I did.
The time you flash all the rom's in the forum and test it out, you probably could of custom built your own to your specifications. So many roms out there, just not the flash freak like I was, too much time.
Hi
Soooo I've just setup a Captivate with CM7 and find it pretty slick, but one thing that REALLY bugs me (and I wonder how it's not bugging others too) is the loss of BLN notifications. I hate having to turn on my screen just to check for a new msg/alert and BLN was great at providing a quick visual cue of something waiting on the phone. How do others deal with not having BLN...is there some other app (other then NoLED) that achieves something similar...or is 'just deal with it' the standard response to this? I see a user by the name of kang has done some custom CM7 kernels but these are all for voodoo sound AFAIK. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Jason
It would be nice to have but for obvious reasons its not high on the priority list compared to other needed fixes
CM7

Just in case you didnt see this at the top of the forum. It was a known issue and you didn't need to flash CM7 seeing as how you should have read that BLN was not an option. I have sound notifications enabled which work just fine for me. Also the lack of notification awareness helps me unplug from the online world for a short period of time.

Funny how some people justify the flaws of CM7. You have a smart phone thats sole purpose is to keep you in constant touch with the online world, yet you say the lack of BLN is your way to get away from it. Like you can't just put it down and not look at it, lol.

I didn't see anyone justifying a "flaw". if you flash cm7 & don't know bln is not an option at the moment, well reading must not be a strong suit.
BLN does not rank high on the priority list of either the cm7 devs or the devs making kernels. Since it is a beta and there are many compatibility issues between the nexus s and the captivate, such as no ext sd in nexus s, more important things are being worked on.
To throw in there, that cm7 has several features (many of which are much more useful than bln) in it that none of the 2.2 or 2.2.1 , roms have. The fact that they dont have the features are not "flaws". Just differences

Uhhh...just because I have a smart phone does t make it my sole purpose for staying in touch. Your priorities must be skewed a bit on what "I" do with "my" phone. And highlight where I was defending cm7 and its flaws? Pointing out the proper thread to post in? No. Saying the op should have read before flashing? No. Stating that I have sound notification and the lack of bln keeps me from checking my phone when I get a message? No. Hmmm...strange. Why do you defend the need for bln considering the captivate went months without it...and for the longest period No led was the best option available. Sorry for not needing an option of little importance to me.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine

Woah, at no point in time did I say I was forced into flashing CM7, nor did I state that I wasn't fully aware of the lack of BLN support...I was simply opening a discussion on how others handle not having a proper LED and now not having BLN...like in your case, you just dont care, fine, that's one valid solution. Another might be to just turn up the audio notification volume very high. I was hoping for some application suggestions, like perhaps one that would do recurring audio notifications until it was acknowledged or something...you know, discussion without picking about and posturing...sorry for being so confused about the nature of this forum.
And I figured and read multiple times that BLN wasn't a core concern for the devs, but I'm sure a number of us users would like to see it...that's all...and I did give props to CM7 right off the hop in my OP, no?
Cheers to those who get it.

First, you didn't really need to create a new thread on a topic that has been discussed before. Second, if you need light notification get that app I mentioned in my second post (No LED). I don't use it anymore so I can't say for sure if it works with Gingerbread. It worked just fine when I was on Froyo. I am not posturing anything, just informing you about a Q&A thread that you should have posted in. I am glad you did read the thread and you had expectations of what was working and not working. If I seem like I am posturing that's ok, just helping you understand how some threads pop up when they really don't need to be. Try out No LED as I think that is the main option still available for lack of BLN.
Edit: I never said you were forced to flash CM7 as you said. I said you didn't need to flash CM7 knowing what worked and didn't work. I just don't understand starting a thread on a topic which has been known; you clearly stated you read the issues with CM7 and still flashed. It doesn't make any sense honestly. Tell me what I am missing here?

You will learn eventually. What do you think Q&A means? This is not the only thread that talks about CM7 IE: Dev thread. The Q&A thread is used for questions and answers. So if it isn't in that thread because you finally searched, maybe you would have asked about BLN and options as a replacement. I gave you a link to where this thread and question should have been asked! Got it yet?

This is my last post in your thread. Again you put words in my mouth. I didn't say you bashed CM7 and I am not defending CM7. I am giving you the proper forum for asking your question. That is why there is a Q&A thread for CM7. No offense to you but you obviously don't understand my intent which was to inform you first that there was a better thread for asking your question. Second was to see why you flashed when it has been known that BLN was not compatible with CM7.
Yes, the Q&A thread does not mention BLN. It has been discussed in the Dev thread. By asking your question in the Q&A thread you would have posted in the proper location and still got answers. Sorry for being forum police but that is how it works with forums. Hopefully you will see I am not trying to be an ass and I get what you were wanting, and I gave you a possible solution that I personally have not tried since Froyo. (No LED). Give it a shot.
Sorry for the negative Nelly's
I think that in all the hustle and bustle to iron out technical difficulties and the like the ultimate goal is often lost. Creating an open and effective operating environment for mobile devices that benefits the user and facilitates quick and effective communication with the development team and those who use the software on a daily basis.
If you have not already found a solution, I have the same desire for BLN on Cyanogen. I found that using another Kernel that sits on top of Cyanogen provides that functionality as well as CPU overclocking. I like Le Kernel Du Jour for example and it can be found here:

Just as a clarification for anyone else reading this thread, there are no restrictions for posting in the Q&A subforum or in any of its stickies. This should have been in the CM7 sticky from the beginning and there's no excuse as to why it wasn't. The Development subforum is the only one with any restrictions.

Has anyone tried Cognition 4.2.2 with different kernals and modems yet? I'm currently running 4.1.1 with Speedmod's latest and KP1, and getting excellent battery life... though I notice the phone sometimes lags a bit.
I love the features and overall smoothness of Cognition, but I changed out the modem (to JK4, and then to KP1) and kernal on 4.1.1 because it was killing my battery, and it was a pretty laggy, too. I've been singularly unimpressed with KB1.
Try the Cognition sticky at the top of the forum, where this should have been posted.
The moderator is quite free to move the thread if its placement is a problem... but I've noticed on far more than one occasion that questions specific to various ROMs, be they technical or concerned with more general matters, have been asked in the general Q and A section.
Which is why I asked here, and not in the Sticky, which doesn't always get perused by the larger population.
Using the KB1 modem with Overstock kernal. All features work, call quality and signal are amazing, bluetooth is clear, and I can get about 37 hours out of my battery from 100% charge with normal usage.

I currently own an Sony Xperia Play and I'm running CM 9.1. Things are pretty stable but the phone is starting to wear out and I'm butting up against the RAM/Memory limits (I have around 100 applications installed and most have to be installed to the SD card).
I was wondering what people thought about the Xperia T? Does the phone suffer from lock-up's, is CyanogenMod 9/CyanogenMod 10 stable enough for a daily driver. What is the camera like, does it boot into the camera quickly. What is the battery life like? For example the Play running stock will last ~18 hours but running CM9 it tends to last 12 hours. Has anyone seen a bluetooth gamepad/keyboard case?
I'm wondering if this is a better choice when compared to the SGS3 or the Nexus 4.

I checked the Q&A forum and saw nothing answering my questions. Can I suggest if you find noob style Q&A questions so offensive that you don't bother reading them. Only last week a bunch of my colleges were complaining about posts like yours which proliferate stack overflow
The XT is an LTE based phone, LTE is only available on T-Mobile/Orange and since VOLTE isn't supported by any UK carrier means there is a noticeable delay between answering a phone. Also there has been some suggestion that 4G will for the short term have a noticeable affect on battery life.
Your second thread spends the entire time talking about the Nexus 4 and getting a stock rom. Neither answers my series of questions. I'm interested to know what the phone is like during daily use use either with stock, CM, AOKP, etc...
I tend to avoid review sites as I find them inaccurate I would prefer to know what people who own the device think of it after using it for a while.

Well, being someone who helps out a lot, i tend to read all Q&A posts, its kinda of my job as a RC. So its annoying when threads are replicated.
My suggestion is to read the two threads I linked, and then read the CM10 thread in the dev section. Finally, as you alluded to, no review site can give you the true feeling of how a phone runs, so I must ask myself, why are you asking for a review?
Take the plunge and run the roms yourself. XDA is not a review forum, it is a dev forum. And if you and your colleagues dont like it I refer you to the rules of the forum.
Hi Steve & Greg, I don't think we have crossed before.
Rather than start to bicker, how about we try and help each other. While your specific questions may not have been asked before there is no harm in asking. The only true way of finding out what a ROM is like is to flash it and test it.
There are multiple threads within the forum answering most of the OP's questions already, just as Greg points out.
In addition to the threads Greg has quoted there is a post your pics thread and a post your battery life thread, both in General. There's also a niggles thread but I forget if it is in General or Q&A.
Combined they answer pretty much all questions asked.
To be honest though, I've personally never got much idea about which phone is best for ME from discussion threads or reviews. They often help you decide but you don't really know what the phone is going to be like without trying it for a while. In my case I couldn't be happier with my XT and would personally avoid Google's new phones due to the bleeding edge technology and the app compatibility and stability issues often associated with them for the months following their release.
Oh, and steve: it might be helpful to all concerned if you title your threads more subjectively - if everyone titled them Xperia T it would make for a pretty painful reading experience.

I'm in the UK and was on O2 (at the end of my contract) when I bought my XT SIM free, and used it for about a week before I got my new Orange SIM.
On both networks the phone has been fine and I haven't noticed any issues with delays.
I'm not on a 4G contract with Orange though so don't know about battery life.
