Desire Source Out: FM Radio Anyone? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
I just wondering. Since the desire kernal source is out (link: http://member.america.htc.com/download/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/bravo_54b7033a.tar.gz ) are we going to wait for FroYo to see if google got the FM radio working on there, or shall we have a look at the desire rom to see how HTC did it?

+1
Would love to see this working on my N1

It's most likely disabled at a hardware level.

paul (of modaco) has had the desire ROM up and running for sometime on our N1, but the FM radio does not work yet.
froyo is reputed to be bringing the functionality.
please search this sort of thing. if you had gone to the dev section, you would have seen that there are several desire ROMs working, none of which incorporate a functional FM radio.

If YOU would do some reading you'd know he means now we can maybe get some hints on how we can get the DRIVER working for the fm transmitter, not get an app for it.

if YOU had read my reply, you would have noticed that i did not suggest an app, and what i was saying was that the driver for the desire DOES NOT WORK on the N1.
lord, i swear sometimes it is like herding cats around here sometimes.

Okay, sorry if this is incorrect, but i was led to believe that those desrie roms had nothing to do with the true desire kernal, since the source was not released yet...I actually think i remember paul or someone big into the "sense on nexus deal" saying they still NEEDED the kernal to figure out how htc used the fm transmitter.
If i am incorrect, ooops.

I think thats right but even with the source we may never have it working. We'll see soon enough

I remember reading that the FM radio does not work because Paul needed the Desire Kernel, but there is no guarantee that even with the Desire kernel, the N1 radio will work.

Well if i remember correctly, paul almost got the radio working, it could boot up, but didnt find any stations on scan. It is also correct that he wanted the desire kernal to fix it, but im wondering if anyone else is looking into it apart from him

I have an N1 with the FM Radio installed and it does scan and find stations even showing the text stream across the top of the app but no sound whatsoever :-( As mentioned before a good alternate app if you really want FM radio is RadioTime on the market. Works very well.

Since FroYo is rumored to bring FM radio with it, I guess that no dev will be doing anything about it until FroYo is out and the rumor is confirmed (bringing the radio to N1 users) or denied (and in this case someone might take a look at Desire kernel and "find" the missing audio, if it's not HW-related).

There is little reason to expend valuable time on something that might be fixed within a few weeks when you have other work which is not going to fix itself. Not said in so many words but I get the impression its on the back burner till the solids are in on froyo.

Pfft fm, what I want is an AM radio.

From the list of Froyo features published, it does not look like the N1 will be getting FM radio or transmitter in this release (if it’s even possible)

Why are you looking at the base code and assuming the device specific updates will not include different things?

Any EEs out there know what kind of battery drain is expected from using the FM radio? I know this is dependant on a lot of things, any insight will be nice to know.
I'm mainly interested in FM so I can listen to live NPR broadcast.

A bit more than just playing MP3s. Plus, it depends on the design - specifically on the chip used and on how much power conservation its makers managed to squeeze.

I have to disagree with you on this one Jack, FM circuits are small and once your set it, it should just play, very little is going on. Where as with MP3s there is actual processing going on.

Transmitter or An automatic weighter for Diamond?

Hey mates, really appreciate that forum. It's very useful. I have an idea... Is it possible to use our Diamond like a transmitter for iPod? Or is there any program that we can use to check the weight of something?
Thanks in advance.
Best wishes.
JS.
Transmitter, how would that be possible without any built in FM transmitter? If that´s what you thought?
How do you want to weight anything with the Dimamond? That´s not possible!
Well there is FM Radio and i thought that it is possible to be done something like this. Well it's just an idea...If someone can realize it it will be very nice I think...
*ironic on*and if the camera-diod would be usable as a flashlight this will be also very nice*ironic off*
It's just not working, the FM Radio is a reciver no transmitter and won't be turned into one by software
(Well: HTC implemented a Multitouch surface and didn't really used it, maybe they also implemented a FM transmiter and don't told us
In this case it would be possible^^)
This is almost a good as the post about a program to charge the battery

I don't want to be bad, but I have a KS20, and the camera LED flash CAN be used as a flashlight (volume down with phone on standby).
Quite a useful feature, also.
I'm changing for a Touch Pro, which doesn't have that!
FM transmitters are technicaly illegal in many european countries, but that is irrelevant since it doesnt have one, and what exactly was you thinking the phone can do to weigh something?

Maybe if someone wrote a little app to monitor the accelerometer as the object was dropped on it... I'm not going to volunteer for that one, though...
Clint
If the display can measure pressure-strength it should be possible to a small degree.
Well I just like the idea, I know that's not possible, but I'm trying to think for useful things without realization.
Hmm, whos going to volunteer their diamond for the max load test on that one then?
Hey guys,
I have attached the FM transmitter CAB, it is the version used on Eten Pocket PC Phones.
I tested it on my phone - it runs but messes up all other sounds such as ring tones and musics etc.
It doesn't do anything probably because the device lacks some transmitter hardware?
It is russian a version but that doesn't matter - you need to install both files to be able to run it.
Wish someone could make it work!!!

FM radio from Desire.

Hi,
Has anyone managed to get the FM radio software from the Desire to work on a Nexus One? I think it should be fairly easy. If no-one has done it, I might try - is there a convenient place to download the unzipped contents of a desire rom?
Once it is working I intend to try to get FM transmit to work.
Tim
PS: Yes I did search the forum. You can't search for 'FM'; it is too short.
PPS: This all assumes the FM antenna pin from the broadcom chip is connected to the headphone socket. I can't see why they wouldn't do that though.

A lot of people have tried but i dont think they have tried very hard lol. ive been looking into it but i dont have much time nor the expertise to mess with kernels lol.
The devs at google io said fm support will not come officially for the nexus but they said the communities best bet would be to grab the drivers from the incredible's kernel. the kernels for all htc android phones are all open source and are available here:
http://developer.htc.com/
Note: they also said its not guaranteed it will work lol
will donate to you if u can get fm working good luck!
get in touch with paul obrien from modaco.com, he should be able to get you desire rom dump, or antyhing you need.
I will donate big time aswell.

Me too -- will donate
Have fun writing a driver for it.
Also, I'm pretty sure the current N1 OEM 2.1 kernel doesn't even have the possibility of supporting it, driver or not.
Edit: It may be the radio that doesn't support it. Or maybe both the kernel and the radio.
Either way... good luck.
The driver works?
It searches for FM channels and finds them, also plays it.
The sound just never makes it futher

The glgps daemon, jupiter.xml, and you! (How to make the GPS behave better)

Hi Vibrant owners!
I made a post over in the Captivate forum about how we can configure the GLGPS daemon in our phones (this is used to control the GPS behavior)
Attached are some update.zips with a new glgps daemon pulled from the Nexus S, secgps.conf and a jupiter.xml configuration inside. The GPS chipset is common among all SGS models, so this should work for you. Please try it, feedback is appreciated!
Sweet!
Sent from the helm of the vibrant Galaxy S!
I thought the vibrant does not use the jupiter.xml
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I know at least one model of Vibrant does (Bell), not sure about the others (CDMA does not I believe)
With the vibrant froyo leaks, we now use gpsd and jupiter.xml Samsung decided to make it the same across the board. At least for the i9k, cap and vib. Not sure aboit the epic and fascinate though

i really don't understand these "fix your gps" threads. Hasn't it already been fixed a while back with the newer 2.2 roms? Mine is just fine now.

Wow. Your like saying that people doesn't have to fix their gps if yours has been already fixed.
im saying if you've upgraded to a new rom like most here then it should have been fixed. what kind of fix are you expecting a 100/100 Sat lock the instant you turn on the GPS app?

Yeah it should have been fixed, but to some it isn't. Maybe because of the hardware or other issues.

I'm not expecting that, we all just want it to be usable like having a better accuracy.
sorry it's getting late and my brain is not fully functional ^_^ though it is sorta confusing how the same hardware can produce different results with the newer 2.2 roms.
It's not the same though.
The antenna got revised in October 2010. See the post about the gps fix in the Vibrant general forum.

It seems the newer antenna did fix it - the older design is unreliable so "identical" hardware can have different GPS performance depending on how much the connection has worked loose.

if you compare to HTC model like HD2, you will see that vibrant is very slow altough gps is fixed...I once use htc hd2 with MDJ mod for android GPS is real fast, never more than one minutes from start ( case compared when u totally delete gps data) I don't know how HTC did it...just for your guy to concern
My GPS has never worked and I've tried every ROM and every fix. Sure I can get a lock on 8 of 12 satellites, and I can easily get 10 foot accuracy. As soon as I try to use Navigation, it sucks. It'll jump around by a few feet here and there, and that's enough to totally throw off the navigation. All of a sudden it thinks I'm the wrong street and its telling me to turn around.
im sorry guys, that sucks. mine has been fine for a while now. and i navigate quite a bit as I am new to Cali. Initially it truly pissed me off when I was on 2.1, telling me i'm staying on the highway when i infact took the off ramp etc... lol. I'd get a replacement.
Can anyone ever say the word GPS without sending everyone into a pissing frenzy?
BACK ON TOPIC:
OP which one do you recommend starting out on for us Vibrant owners?
I highly.. very highly recommend Sombionix' Nero 3. I've used a lot of roms and this one is very very fast. And I usually refrain from saying "fast" because most phones are initially fast when new roms are installed but this one definitely deserves it even after massive app installs and use.
I tryed out the google version and it killed my GPS it sees 12 birds but won't connect to any.
Which do I install? I have a Tmobile Vibrant. You have 3 files listed. Thanks.

[Q] can't install apps

so i dropped my heroc the other day when getting it off the shelf so that i could create/port something for this phone, sense i was getting bored with my evo, and after i dropped it i picked it up and checked to make sure everything works but only thing that doesn't is installing apps
any suggestions for fixes besides replacing are welcome
also i'd like to know somethings people would like to see done on the hero:

would you like a new rom?

If you really wanted to do something useful, you would get into improving our current driver situation. We have an open-source camera driver (which wraps the OEM camera driver) in the CyanogenMod tree, but it needs work, especially on the camcorder side (camcorder doesn't focus at present).
There's also still a lot of work needed on the GL side. We have the libgles_qcom.so file from previous ROM images, but it isn't 100% compatible with Gingerbread (missing textures in Quadrant, etc).
The YouTube player sometimes plays audio-only when viewing "HQ" videos. I suspect this is due to a missing video codec and/or related to the above GL issues. We need work done on various codecs.
There's plenty of work to be done in kernel space. The 2.6.35 kernel posted by s0be is significant progress, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Personally I would like to see more optimizations done on the kernel side because these will benefit all ROM images.
There are also various bugs in CyanogenMod that shouldn't be too difficult to fix, such as notification power widgets disappearing when changing themes. Check their issue tracker on Google Code to find some easy things to fix.
It would be awesome to see a fully-working 2.3.4 ROM image that was 100% AOSP and had completely working drivers. It would certainly make future development much easier and provide a nice base to build other ROM images from.
...oh, wait, that's right. You just want to "port" "tweaks"/themes/nonsense. Try fixing what we have right now before you give us more half-working junk.

[REF] Gingerbread GPS fixes and the vibrant - read before posting GPS fix

I'm seeing tons of GB GPS fixes for the vibrant even though most will not work.
I saw GPS files for the bell and virgin vibrant posted here and files for the
telus Fascinate 3G+. These files will not work because the vibrant carries a different hardware radio.
The T-mobile US Vibrant is a special variant as our phone is the only galaxy s device (other than the SGS4G) that has the 850,1700,1900,2100 bands, all other galaxy s variants have 850,900,1900,2100mhz bands. Our vibrant requires 1700 3g because thats what tmobile US uses for 3G, because of this difference we need a different hardware radio, That's also why we cannot use i9000 modems on the vibrant for tmobile US The bell and vibrant are just rebranded GT-i9000's and the Telus Fascinate 3G+ looks like a vibrant but may even be more similar to a captivate because of the hardware radio. Even though they may have the same styling or name it does not work because of the hardware radio.
The Captivate has a near identical (FM Radio is not present) hardware radio that allows it to use i9000 Modems and GPS files, same with the telus fascinate.
The vibrant and the SGS4G have different hardware radios to support 21mb/s HSPA+. These two hardware radios are similar enough to allow GPS to work but remain modems non-functioning. Romans GPS fix worked but had long lock times and poorly working compass.
Heathens Gingerbread gps fixed worked on the vibrant on 2.2 very well but fails on 2.3. What I think is the vibrant may have hardware similar enough to allow some files to work on one version of android but maybe completely useless on another version of android.
Just so you guys know,
Bell and virgins vibrants ARE NOT T-mobile US vibrants
Telus fascinates LOOK LIKE but ARE NOT T-mobile US vibrants
International galaxy s vibrants ARE Bell and Virgin Vibrants
Rodgers captivates ARE IDENTICAL to at&t captivates
The i9000 galaxy s and the bell and virgin vibrants HAVE NEAR IDENTICAL RADIOS to the rodgers and at&t captivates
Tmobile US SGS4G's are SIMILAR to the Tmobile US Vibrant

You're going to have to explain why the cell radio affects the GPS. There's a different antenna and GPS is not controlled by the radio firmware.

Just one tip philliple...when trying to sound like you know something never use the term "what I believe is". Don't get me wrong I am guilty of it also. Instead you might say "correct me if I'm wrong but..." Gives your statement an air of confidence and knowledge yet gives you an out if in fact what you said is incorrect. And I do know how old you are, we all do so respect there.
That said you are correct the GPS does require data in our case cellular data. While we can use the gps without cell data, on a wifi connection for instance, because the GPS is on a phone the code for the drivers would be written to connect to cell service. Therefore GPS files, such as drivers (some files that don't require code to the network will work, such as GPS conf.), can not just be pulled from any phone. This is why the files pulled from the Vibrant 4G work and the ones from Captivate do not.
Here is a link to a little light reading for anyone that wants to learn more about the GPS on their phone...http://stackoverflow.com/questions/33637/how-does-gps-in-a-mobile-phone-work-exactly Pay close attention to the AGPS section. Not really sticky material. Nice info though. Maybe talk the the author if the vibrant bible and you can get a link in his thread for info.... Still doubtful.

I don't believe this is correct. Our phones have GPS hardware are capable of independent GPS, that is GPS without data assistance for a lock. It takes quite a bit longer without AGPS, but it is entirely possible. Try changing your GPS to standalone mode, disabling all other location services (via WiFi and via cell tower) and putting it into Airplane Mode, then launch Google Maps. You can obtain a lock.
