Ok, I am having all sorts of trouble. It doesn't seem to matter what I do, I cannot get beyond a stable installation of Cyanogen Mod 4.0.2 on my T-Mobile G1. I am going to post all the specifics of my current setup:
ROM: Cyanogen Mod 4.0.2
SPL: DangerSPL
Radio: 2.22.19.26I
Firmware Version: 1.5
Now, I was under the impression, that if I wanted to go to Cyanogen Mod 4.2.15.1, I would simply need to wipe, and then reinstall the ROM right over this one, and I may need to fix_permissions to resolve any force close issues.
But no matter how many times I try, it seems to indefinitely hang at the first splash screen (T-Mobile) and will not boot, so I end up having to wipe and reflash 4.0.2 to get it functional again.
What am I doing wrong, and what would be the end-all, ideal way to flash up from 4.02 to 4.2.15.1?
Also, once I do this, in the future, I hope to flash to the 5.07 once we get the stable ok from Cyanogen, what would be the ideal steps then?
PS I've done a LOT of searching on these forums, AND others forums via Google, and when it comes specifically down to my exact, current situation, things get vague and nebulous. I would appreciate loads, if someone could weigh in and straighten me out.

No. You need to flash the base-defanged... one sec for link...
http://dx.infernix.net/DRC83_base_defanged.zip
Flash that, then the CM update. He went legal after that 4.0.4 C&D.
Edit: Looked as his thread on his forums, and no link to it in it.
However, it's in the wiki....
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.p...G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod#File_Download
Oh, that's right! I completely forgot about that. So, wipe, flash Defanged, then flash 4.2.15.1 right over it. Thanks a million.

He's a troll, don't listen to a word he is. 4.02 was from before the CnD letter Cyan received to remove Google apps from his package. You need to flash the Defanged base, and immediately flash 4.2.15.1 over it.
If you are having trouble with force closes, then run fix_permissions in the recovery console.

lol dude he was giving you a smartass response. Just wipe (alt-W I believe) in Recovery and you should be good. If you get forceclose errors, run fix_permissions.
It wouldn't hurt to wipe all of the categories. Can't hurt unless you have data to lose. If you have data to lose, then it gets a little more advanced than I have the patience to address today. :/

He does not need to wipe battery stats or rotate settings. Those two options are for a completely different cause.
Edit: If you have data to loose, back it up. Use Titanium Backup for all applications + app data. If you can't get titanium backup - don't bother ever rooting again.

Ne help b appreciated.
did you wipe? it installed fine for me
Yea I tried almost everything. Still I boot it up type web logcat on pc right b4r powering it on it says waiting for devices 2 sec into bootup the command prompt exits
Did you wipe your ext3 partition too? Wondering if that could cause problems.

Hmmm... the only thing I can think of then is a corrupt download, as david1171 is alluding to.
I've also heard of a newer issue where the device memory can fill up, and there being some process using Fastboot to erase everything (different than wiping). I'm not up to date on it though, and have asked if there's any way to clear everything through recovery console or terminal. Still waiting to hear on that.
Not sure if that is your problem, but try looking around in Cyan's thread for a potential solution. Keep us updated if you figure it out.
can u run a logcat and see where its looping?
Hey guys, nope the md5 matches perfectly, uansari if u cud point me as to how to erase using fastboot that would be great and is it safe or would i have to go back to rc29 n start all over again ? B-man007 yea i cant run logcat either. it just quits when i type adb logcat it goes back to command line.

I would love to point you to those directions, but unfortunately, I don't know much about it. Someone else posted something along the lines of the problem you're having in a separate thread, and someone replied that this was discussed in Cyanogen's thread and required Fastboot to erase something or other.
Wish I could be more help... I'll try to find the thread where I read that and link you.
Edit: Here is the thread. Shoot a PM over to the guy who posted about it, or do some searching and let us know what you find out. Good luck man...

Who did you message? There was someone who responded to the OP in that thread about the fastboot fix. I've messaged him as well, but haven't heard back yet.
Your other point is well taken though... If you can flash other ROMs fine, then it has to be something else. What other roms have you used? Try a different dev's rom, like JACxROM or the rooted standard rom from enomther. If those aren't flashing right either, then we need to keep looking for a solution, but if they flash right then we've narrowed it down.
hmm im running xRom 1.3 just fine, i flashed 3.6.8.1 just fine 2 n ran fine. Hmm let me try cyans 4.0.1 n c if i get this wierd hang.
Hmm same problem with 4.0.1....so basically up to 3.6.8.1 worked fine and after those i get the same stupid hang. Does that narrow ne thing lol ?

Just tried tht, 3.9.10 flashed n works fine, then w/o wipin flashed 4.0.2 still same problem.
My HTC dream G1 has been on the boot screen "T-Mobile. G1" for 30minutes! (counted).
What's wrong?? how do I fix it??
This are all the things I did to my phone:
Yesterday I had 4.0.1, and decided to upgrade to 4.1.99 because I was tired of it. I follow this instructions [exactly] http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/10/04/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-4-1-99-on-your-g1-android-phone/ , once I was done with that I played with my phone and decided to upgrade to 4.999 to get a few fixes and a bit more stability.
So I decided to upgrade to 4.1.999 by doing the exact same thing that is said here http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/10/06/how-to-update-cyanogenmod-from-4-1-99-to-4-1-999/
I did it and the phone was working a bit weird.. I decided to restart the phone by end+home... and now my phone wont boot anymore!!
It has been in the same black "T-mobile G1" screen for 30 minutes!!
What do I do??????????????????????
well reboot again my friend, can you get into recovery if so try a wipe
Pull the battery and try again
EDIT: sorry gridlock, didnt see you already responded lol
Is the wipe gonna delete everything I have???

If you followed the instructions exactly, then I am assuming you performed a nandroid backup and so you always have that. I always create a new backup folder on my desktop as well. So, reboot into recovery, wipe and apply the update again...same way you did before hun
is your phone retarded because you did not wipe after you flashed, hhmmm that is a sad shame
Okay.. so please tell me what I have to do now that my phone doesnt work please
So I should boot in recovery mode, and click "wipe data/factory reset" ?
should I do that? what about my nandroid backup, will that be lost?

Your phone should already be wiped because you should have wiped coming from your cyanogen stable to 4.1.99. The instructions about wiping are very clear from his instructions in his experimental thread. If you didn't wipe before you came over from 4.0.4 to 4.1.99, then that is your problem I suspect. IF you have a nandroid backup that you made before coming over from 4.0.4, then restore that, and then do the steps again following cyanogen's experimental thread instructions. (which include a wipe)
Good luck

I know it's difficult, but let's just tell him.
A nandroid backup creates an 'image' that backs up most every piece of data that makes your phone go (os, apps, ...i said everything, right?). Some *extremely* core components of the OS are not included in the nandroid image.
Titanium backs up individual applications (white), application settings (green), and red stuff you probably shouldn't touch...because you know...it's red...and you might not be smart enough for something red.
A nandroid probably needs to match the kernal version (maybe more...limit of my knowledge) you've flashed most recently.

This is all the work of ZduneX25, so all credit for this interesting mod goes to him.
I've done nothing but decompile and modify our framework-res and SystemUI apks, recompile and resign them as well as inserted them within an update.zip for people who aren't up to go and do the edits(It's tedious and a lot more than I thought it was haha). I hope it's of some help to you all.

But I'd gladly be able to attempt to help in any way so you can ask questions here as well.
Important Information:
Before flashing this in CWM you should wipe dalvik cache to guarantee no issues arise.
As always make a nandroid before flashing in case on the off chance something goes wrong you can always completely revert.
Zips updated with auto-wipe for cache and dalvik cache upon flash with the help of ugothakd.

Hmmmm, that's odd, was it hanging on the CM7 Android Skating? Because it stays there for a bit before booting into the system. Flash the revert zip and give it some time and let me know if it boots, if it's not too much of a hassle? If so, try the mod zip again and it should boot as well.
I've been flashing them multiple times to be sure they work but I'll update the scripts to auto clear.

You need to re-lock your bootloader. Careful, it will wipe all your data. Check my rooting thread in general.
Hey!
Just wondering, when is the next update comming out?
Horrible!
This is the worst ROM i ever seen. Is like the biggest downgrade i ever done to my phone.
WHY DID YOU REMOVED FLASH PLAYER!?!?!?!?!?!?
And why did you remove Twitter For HTC Sense!?!?!?
I dont know what "smooter" means to you, but for me this is not smoother at all!
Edit: oh boy. Wasn't i angry that day. XD
Wiped /System accidentally and i couldnt find the stock rom anywhere. (Although it was obviously in the superthread)
I was looking through all my posts and saw this one.
This was my first post on XDA. What a start. Lol.
Sorry for the mean comment tho.
PS: still don't like your ROM. XD
Jk, i actually like it. It was the ROM that made me want more from Android, bc it showed to me what custom ROMs can do. The thing that opened the door to this awesome modding community. So thank you for making this.
Real PS: it was way faster than the stock rom.

Read my rooting thread again. Careful.
Okay, your hboot version has changed... I thought I was quite clear about that.

With the new firmware you've flashed another version of HBOOT. Check the version of HBOOT and install the correct recovery.
Hi there, I have some trouble. I make a root S-ON. Now I try to flash new rom (JamesRom). I make full wipe (both three) and then restore ROM. Everething looks good, but when I hit reboot system, only HTC logo shows on the white background and nothing else happend. Can you tell me, what do I wrong?
hboot: 1.03.0001
radio: 14.16.36Q4.22
After that I restore my backup and everythink work normally. But I cant flash James rom. Can you please help me?

You do not do anything wrong. During the installation does not write any error?

If the restoring goes wrong, the phone might still work. But the problem might be elsewhere, though.
Thank you for your answers. Tomorrow I'll put here log print screen after James Rom restore.
Ok, here is it. First of all I go to recovery, here is my hboot:

}
Then I go to "wipe data/factory reset", and choose "Clean to instal new ROM"
After that I choose "wipe cache partition" and then "wipe dalvik".
Then I mount everything:
and then restore James Rom, this is the log screen:
When I hit reboot system, in first case only HTC logo shown and nothing else happened:
In this case, the mobile phone doesn't stuck on it, but it normally start up, but to the stock ROM :
What the **** is that? I am 100% sure, that I choose James rom to restore. Maybe the backup which I download is bad. Can you send me a link to James rom? I downloaded this one from this website:
