Welcome to the forum and thanks for not clicking any of the stickies labeled READ ME BEFORE YOU POST in any of the forums. We appreciate this, because now we get to spend time reading this thread and being annoyed, when the time could be better served helping people that actually read the directions and maybe got stuck. And yes, I am being sarcastic.

Sigh* my back hurts now. Go install adb also.

Here, both tutorials in 1 spot....
ADB 4 Dummies (this will get ADB up and running on either linux, windows or mac w/ step by step instruction for all)
G1 Root / Upgrade Tutorial - this will root, upgrade recovery, upgrade radio, upgrade spl, partition your sdcard and install the newest cyanogenmod 4.2.15.1.

I started reading through that, downloading the files that it said to download but I'm stuck at the "1.6 Recovery Image" file. The link goes to a page that offers files for the Android DevPhone, but I just have a normal TMobile G1. What file am I supposed to use?

You're kidding, right? When I tried that upgrade tutorial (the one at myhangoutonline.com) *none* of the files were available for download. Every single one I clicked on went to a "404" page.

Ok, thanks, but... I'm still a bit confused: all the instructions I've seen for upgrading to Android 2.1 say to use cyanogenmod, but the cyanogenmod site says that it is based on Android 1.6 (according to cyanogenmod.com/about), so is that really what I'm supposed to use?

I apologize, stupid SEO plugin was rewriting the url and messing up a seperate plugin. Links are now working if you still need to upgrade.
My tutorial shows you how to root and upgrade everything and install cyanogenmod 4.2.15.1 if you want to try the 2.1 version which is in testing, go to the cyanogenmod repository on my site, go into the testing folder for the G1 and download that rom instead. Use that rom instead of 4.2.15.1 as the final step.

Just put the 1.6 on then you can flash 2.1 found HERE
Follow the directions on the main post.
If you have gtalk pm me your gtalk email and I'll try and step you through it if you absolutely can't figure it out.

Thanks for all the answers! I think I have a good understanding of what I need to do now, so here goes...
*crosses fingers*

I'm following the instructions on myhangoutonline.com.
Well, so far so good, with some minor hiccups:
During the downgrade your phone step, when the phone says "Press the action key" after step 6, it's talking about the trackball button. Took me a little while to figure that out.
However, after I pressed it, it just went back to the initial multicolor gradient screen, with the addition of a line in the middle that said "Serial0". (maybe it was there before, but I missed it?) I ended up having to pull the battery because I could figure out how to make it reboot.
After reboot I had to go through the Google sign in process. Not a big deal, but it'd be nice to mention that this is necessary.
Upgrading recovery seemed to go pretty much as described. On to the apparent dangerous step of upgrading the radio & spl!

Uh oh! It looks like something didn't work. I started up in recovery mode, but there's no option in the menu for "Mount SD card".
I tried going to console, then "ls /sdcard", but no files show up, and /sdcard doesn't show up as a mounted filesystem when I run "mount".
I couldn't figure out how to get out of the console ("exit" just took me back to a "press enter" prompt, and then back into the console), so I ended up pulling the battery again.
Now what? Should I try upgrading recovery again?

Root for Rookies

Hey Guys
I really hope I'm posting this in the right place. Please forgive my ignorance
For the past few days I have tried to get simple and UP TO DATE instruction on how to root the G1. There is so much information scattered out there that its quite overwhelming. Unfortunately I only understand half of the stuff I'm reading (at best) and was hoping one of you smart folks can help a complete amateur in my desperate quest to get root
Can someone please help me with the following:
1) are these steps for downgrading to RC 29 and rooting still applicable for cupcake?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
2) what does it mean to update the radio, SPL, and ROM and how do I do that.
3) where can I find the latest versions of all the stuff I need?
4) will I be able to reinstall all the apps I've bought as long as sign in with the same email after rooting?
5) will some market apps be blocked for me after rooting?
I realize this sounds really ignorant but would appreciate any help I can get!
Think about how many times a day the same inquiries roll these boards. If you've been reading the boards for the past few days and didn't find the answer to the majority of those questions something ain't right meng. I'm not trying to be funny. I'm just saying. The foundation of everything you may or may not learn is slap dab one of the first posts in this forum.
I'm not going to get into that..but you need to. the answers to all your questions are here in front of you. It just gets frustrating (it was to me at least) at times because you might stumble upon 3 different but totally correct answers to one question. Thats exactly where i was right HERE. that was two weeks ago. jumped on the boards one friday night a wreck, by sunday night i was peacefully rooted. Slow down, think about what your doing and what you're reading. make sure you have some free time...TO YOUR SELF. get a pen and some paper right stuff down. take into consideration you might not make it in a day. yeah u might botch your way to ROOT, but unless you REALLLY understand and know how to get there...you could be setting yourself up for alot of frustration. thats all i have to say about that. you caught me on a good night...just had a glass of wine bout call it quits. sorry about any typos. good luck!

OUCH! Good looking out.
OP, I followed the instructions you linked to just a few days ago and it worked like a breeze. Much easier that I thought it would, and i have no experience with this. I would suggest that when you get to the final part where you are upgrading to a new ROM to try cyanogen's stable build 3.6.8.1. It is just like cupcake (what you had) with a ton of new options.
also, his pimped out recovery.img can be used... version 1.4. I followed that guide to a T, then learned of this new and improved recovery.img file he made. So, basically the next day I changed to this version and it is a lot better.
Partition your sd card when you finish this and his rom will put all of your apps on your SD card, which frees up a ton of internal memory. I went and d/loaded about 60 apps after doing this. His rom does it for you automatically... like, no thought needed, you want even know unless you go to settings and look at the memory.... or, you may b/c of the speed of your phone. This was also much easier than I though, basically just keying a few lines of text in terminal emulator (which you will have after loading his rom above).
Any of the other experienced people have any issues with what I said?
I would also suggest cyanogen's builds. It has a lot of features and is both relatively noob friendly, feature-packed, advanced capabilities for advanced users, and fast. His 4.0 stable is just around the corner with even more features than his current stable version. There are many other ROM's out there as well, you'll have to try em out yourself and see if you like them or not. (Be careful of the ones that say you need the updated SPL, such as the hero ROM's. If your not careful when updating to that SPL [Haykuro's 1.33.2005 SPL] you could brick your phone. )
Cyan's recovery is a must
its great no matter what ROM you choose to use
If you need anything else, feel free to PM me or post here
This is how I got it to work!!!
(SD CARD READER NEEDED)
Got it to work using this tutorial. If I had found it before I wouldn't have started a new thread. Will look harder in the future!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=533731
Followed steps until step 16
After step 16:
I had to install the JesusFreke rom cause it wouldn’t let me flash the cyanogen recovery image otherwise (permission denied problem as mentioned by author)
Installed cyanogen recovery image
I skipped partitioning the sd card at this point cause I didn’t plan on installing the Hero rom. If you want to flash the Hero rom you shouldn't skip partitioning
Installed latest Radio
Installed latest SPL
From here on I did my own thing:
Couldn’t boot after updating SPL cause rom got wiped by updating SPL. I had to put the new rom (Cyanogen v3.6.8.1) onto sd card, rename as update.zip and boot into recovery mode to flash it. This is were the sd card reader comes in handy.
You can find the Cyanogen ROM here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537204
After flashing the rom it was stuck on the loading screen so I rebooted into recovery mode and did a clean swipe. Loaded just fine after that.
Created ext2 partition using Paragon Partition Manager (see threat below), rebooted and was good to go
Partitioning using Paragon Partition Manager:

Sorry, I have to ask this, how do I recover the image on my G1? I have it connected to my PC but it's currently in recovery mode right now.
Please provide me detailed step to step what I need to do. Thank you for your time and effort, this is upsetting me big time.

Since you're too cocky and too ignorant to do most of the things on here, I suggest you put your phone back to stock as soon as you figure out how to flash images. Get the "recovery image" from here http://developer.htc.com/google-io-device.html, then go ahead and get a card reader, drop the file on the reader, rename it update.zip, boot into recovery, alt+s to flash it, alt+w to wipe, then reboot.

How to get my G1 back on track?

Hey guys,
First of all, thank you for spending time on reading this thread, I really need your help.
I wanted to root my phone (G1) etc. etc. So I downgraded it but didn't like it at all! So I descided to move back up again (latest software version).
I spent hours on the internet searching for software, firmware etc. And I managed to set my phone to RC33 and firmware version 1.1 ... Now my phone is not what it used to be, I guess firmware version 1.1 is kinda old isn't it? Strange enough my phone says it already is fully up to date...
So my question is; could you guys help me out, with getting the latest firmware/software whatever?
Thank you in advance!
Well, what you could do is: Go back to the earliest framework specified in say the cyanogenmod rom, which is RC29. Use that to flash your phone to gain root. It will be very odd looking because it the lowest thing. But then you can flash the awesomness of cyanogen onto it and you'll be good to go.
Also what you said you wanted to root it, so you downgraded. That is but the first step needed. i wouldnt want to stay there either. So yeah follow that guide and you should be on your way.
Although I will admit that it is probably the best running firmware for the G1 thus far!

So in "short" you'd advise me to:
Downgrade to RD29 *again*
Get my phone rooted
And install the cyanogenmod Rom
Is that correct? Now I don't see all the applications on the Android Market, some disappeared, will they return?
In short, yes. I know it seems odd to downgrade to upgrade. But to gain root you have to use RC29. To gain root its not too bad. you have to use RC29 to do it. You just install that. start it up. And then download the app "telnet" from the market. and then run a few commands. from there you can upgrade back up. And yes you should see everything in the market. Yeah its kinda annoying but there are some great results possible.
A more in depth set of instructions is located on the Cyanogen wiki. I cant post a direct link due to my account status but google "how to install cyanogenmod" and its about the 3rd result.

Okay, so here's what I did. I downgraded my G1 to RC29, rooted it successfully. Downloaded the latest cyanogenmod, named it setup.zip, went to recovery mode, did a factory reset and installed the setup.zip. Now my G1 won't get past the load screen (which says G1). What did I do wrong?? I can get still into recovery mode...
Thanks for the help so far!
So I came up with an idea, I need to add a new update.zip how to connect to the computer through recovery mode??

Your kindness would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to go beyond all the roms in order to learn about the android world. Please help me.

you should search for
g1 root
and if you can't get enough info with that
then give up
you don't have what it takes.
now... where did I leave my marshmallows?
Go to the theunlockr.com. They have good tutorials. Good luck dude.
Follow the steps...
Follow the steps on this site to root your phone...you say you got back to cupcake (1.5) right...ok, then you are going in the right direction. I used these to root my phone a while back. The link actually starts @ donut and goes back, but you can find the cupcake instructions on there also. Remember to be patient...it will happen eventually. Hope that helps.

If your phone is truly rooted, just flash a donut or eclair rom? I don't really understand the issue here...
There are a million how-to's here and everywhere else.
It's a complicated process so there is no "easy" answer. I almost gave up a few times in the process but I made it. If I can do it you can too. This is the wrong forum to get help from. I think you want the G1 Q&A forum.
Welcome to XDA-Devs. Search is your friend
Search for Amon Ra's recovery, and flash that. From there, you can easily partition your SD card, and flash ROMs. Also, since you are on the G1, search for and read the thread about flashing the Danger SPL if you want to be able to run some of the bigger ROMs like hero, and some of the eclair roms.

yes that's what is supposed to happen man.. and I appreciate all the guys trying to keep the thread on topic. we were all noobs, and have all posted in places we shouldn't have, but we all learned didn't we? usually I flame people that post in wrong sections but... I took pity on this kid.when you have an expensive device and THINK you've broken it, you do anything to. make it right again, right?

you should have a recovery image installed, if not, install amon ra's. then boot into RECOVERY BY HOLDING HOME AND POWER. DON'T BOOT USING CAMERA AND POWER, THAT PUTS YOU INTO FASTBOOT. YOU FLASH ROMS IN RECOVERY OK? anyways, once you boot into recovery, wipe your phone and flash a Rom and you are all set ok?

its not as easy as that though,,
we have no idea what radio, spl , recovery this guy has.
we can't tell him what to do,
well we can, we can tell him to search and read, he will learn...
read his post, he says he wants to learn.
plenty of stuff to read, no need for questions, they have all been asked and answered countless times.
if he truly wants to learn 'the android world' then he should not be lazy and read, read read.
then play play play

Have you considered he is very new to all of this an is not sure where to read? Or do you just immediately treat people that ask questions like this? If you do not want to help why even post?
@ op go to www.theunlockr.com they have video and written step by steps on how to root pretty much every phone, roms will require you have a new radio or spl, these can be a little more risque to do as opposed to flashing a rom and calling it done, again unlockr will have tutorials on how to do that as well.
Good luck and i hope this helps.

So.... you want him to install a recovery... by using ... recovery? in order to fix a.... BROKEN RECOVERY??? Wow, your illogic appears unbounded.
And what's this nonsense about not flashing in fastboot? Last I checked, flashing roms was **THE THING** that fastboot does!!!

If he's "not sure what to read", then he needs to do further research. Why are we the bad guys when people just go barrelling though steps and when they realized they missed a step and now they have a fancy new paperweight, they freak out and ignore the rules of the Development section, which, if I remember correctly, is for development, and not for questions. There is a specific section for questions, aptly titled the Q&A section.

what to do after bootloader unlocked??

hi guys, im stuck...
well not exactly- i have unlocked the bootloader on my nexus one on FRF91.
but what bout after that? i found some links on XDA and it says to superboot? cant do it i keep getting error and most of the tutorials are on windows OS, i use a mac, i would really appreaciate it if anyone can assist me any further with commands on terminal for mac.
i'm a newbie so i really dont know what to do, i've spend almost 8 hrs on this and only got bootloader unlocked.
thanx for your help guys
Why would you play around with a $580 phone if you don't know what your doing, they had a post showing you how to root without unlocking your bootloader. The other thing is you have to explain exactly what you did, and what stock rom you came from and where your trying to go. I'm not familiar with Mac systems but there should have been instructions for that system to. I'm going to check it out for you and see if I can help.

Do step IV.
Pick a ROM you like from the list in Developers section, download it.
Do step VI.
Not really hard.

This site helped me out alot when I first learned, because they have instructions accompanied with video, so it's like you can't go wrong. Sometime the dudes who have just instructions leave out a step and that can f things up for us. When I rooted my N1, the guy who posted the instructions put a period in the wrong place, and it almost had me stuck, but I knew the recovery image and I knew It did'nt belong there. Anyway check this vid, and let me know what happens, start from the beginning even though your boot loader is unlocked.

Here's another video with instructions for Mac.

There are links to files for each step, and the only suggestion I would make is maybe look for the newer 1.7.0.1 Amon Ra recovery image and to not use the Sense ROM that he links to. The recovery image is here on this forum in the Android Development section. I don't use it since I'm still having no issues with the 1.7.0 version that this guy links to in the guide.
As far as ROMs are concerned, I highly recommend going with either CyanogenMod 5.0.8 Stable (because it has fewer issues and is a good place for a noob to start) or with one of the more stable Froyo roms, like Kang-O-Rama .9.
