Maybe im expecting too much:
When I press gallery, almost 1/3 of the time only 1 or 2 categories come up and no thumbnails. Then i exit and press again and a few more things show up. Then i exit again and usually the 3rd time or so the app opens properly.
Also, about once every 2 weeks i press an app and it opens a different app. And this happens with multiple apps. The only way to fix it is to reboot.
I dont use a task manager
I reboot the phone every couple of days
I wipe the phone about once every 1 or 2 months
Is one of the above practices ruining my device?
I bought the phone and i havent done anything custom to it. Why does my polished 2.1 firmware work like a 5th grade science experiment?
Have occasionally noticed that the gallery app does not pick up all images and categories... something with the media scanner... try using the media scanner in the dev tools app or unmount and remount ur sd card...
Never had any problems with apps opening wrong apps... this is very strange... I have no idea why this is happening and quite frankly, I can;t think of anything which would serve as a possible solution!
Occasionally I've had the latest picture taken not show up in the gallery, but that's it. Stock O/S is great.
Never had it open the wrong app.
I don't run a task killer, don't reboot & have never wiped.
About the app opening the wrong app thing I guess its good news if I'm the only one. Is it possible that I've downloaded an app that is causing it? Or is it more likely an OS issue? it seems a little cheesy that the phone does this, if I could fix it without rebooting that would be a step in the right direction...
Likely an app you downloaded, or just something a little off about the flashing of your update, or a bad RAM memory block at the wrong place.
As for the gallery, I thought I had that issue a bit too, but I noticed that more than anything it just takes a really long time to open fully if it has been kicked out of the cache.
As for the original question posed in the thread title, Android is still Beta in a lot of ways. 2.0/1 is a huge change in many ways from 1.6. It sounds like 2.2 is going to be a bit of a change as well, but instead of changing nearly everything, it is going to build of 2.0/1 plus add in some changes. I am willing to bet that until the release after Gingerbread (the OS after 2.2, aka FroYo), not sure what the "H" release will be codenamed will we see an OS that isn't "Beta" in enough ways for me to call it non-Beta personally... then again, so far Android is less buggy than windows mobile, better than Blackberry even, and on par with iPhone OS, if not better in these regards.
Just like an OS for a computer, same holds true for a smartphone, there are going to be bugs, there are going to be bad programs/apps, and so forth.
I think you should wait for FroYo, if Android still doesn't meet your standards, root and flash some of the custom ROMs. Enom is very stock like, but fixes many of the little bugs, as does Cyan, although with Cyan you do get a few more bugs in some of the development apps and what not.
Just a thought, but maybe you're suffering from the occasional wacky touchscreen issue?
So it's not that it's just opening the wrong app, but the screen is registering a touch in a different place, it's usually most noticable when typing. If it is that, then a simple lock/unlock will solve it, no need for a reboot.

I hadn't used the desktop app before so when I heard it was out for Android it piqued my interest. I downloaded it and although it has a few things missing (lists and hashtag searching I think is missing) they're not important to me. Anyway the purpose for me posting here is to check if anyone else using Cyanogen's Mod v4.2.5 has issues with notifications not happening. This, for me, is the second app that doesn't run as intended using CM ROMs and I don't like that one bit. Before I mention it to Cyanogen I want to see if I'm the only one having issues.
I'm having a few problems, too. Sometimes the program will crash when opening/closing the keyboard, sometimes it will freeze when switching tabs, etc.
I don't think it's CM's issue. I'm having a lot of FCs with it on Amon_RA's ROM as well, think it's just not stable enough.
I mentioned it to them via Twitter and they said they'd look into it. For an initial release the interface is really good I think but notifications are a must. To make sure it wasn't the ROM in general I've tried three separate ROMs now and ran another Twitter program at the same time, same interval updates and the other program (I Tweet) got all updates. Stupid thing is when I was reading them I got Seesmic telling me there were updates now. I'm sure they'll fix it but they better do it fast or the ratings will drop it.
Hello all, i just bought an android G1 from a friend, when it came it was already installed cyanogen mod, then i thought it should of rooted, (by the way i dont know how to root or how to check if its rooted) i am very new on this platform so i have many problems and questions but for now , i tried to change google account which was my frends account to use g1 with all 100 percenti but i couldnt find any proper way to switch my google account, then i finally found hard reset thing and did it, after all i could log on my google on my g1 and i felt a bit shocked with all those missing parts on the android platform as a winmo user before, even my HTC artemis had better skills on internet browsing such flash support over skyfire and easy wifi DNS change and have free web browsing without banned pages.. anyways i was trying to install some games and apps from the market till i got the notification of low memorry ohhh ****, its a nightmare to have hundreds of apps but no place to install, how stupid but then i found a solution on the net to help installin apps directly to your sd card, while i was following this steps on the xda forum pages, i restarted my fone again after having the img file launched with 1.4 version, then i realized all my installed apps icons were lost, then i saw they were gone from my g1 but when i go to app store, they are still on my downloaded programms list, but they are not in storage, thats becase now i cant install them again because they are seen already installed, how can i fix this problem guys , and thanks for the help already.!!!!!!1
Hey, thanks for steppin' up! No matter how snarky I get, or how nice I am, some people just don't get it. It's always great when someone does get it.
If you have a cyanogenmod, then you have root.
How can i get my apps back from the market when they show apps are already installed?
I guess I'd uninstall and reinstall from within the Market App. Open "Market," click on a listing of an app that says it's installed but you can't see in your app drawer (the program for the Home screen and app drawer is call Launcher.apk... apk is the equivalent of exe, more or less). on the bottom of the screen there should be two buttons, Open and Unistall. I'd uninstall and reinstall the ones you want that way.
Yeah, I miss WinMo, too. I still use PhatPad in my old phone and PC. But the capacitive screen really is nicer for fingers, and I'm more addicted to XDA and hacking phones than I am to having a hard-core useful phone (although the native ouTube App beats any I've found for WinMo, and I actually use the native contacts app). I got tired of the bugs, too, since they'd hose the whole OS and force you to decide to reboot. Android just blows past an error and lets it not work, but keeps the OS up. When I'd run out of memory or something in WinMo on an incoming call, the phone would freeze, and then there's a 3 minute reboot. In Android, it just slows down so I get less ring time to answer, but I can call back right away, and it boots in two minutes.
Java makes really nice interfaces and games, too.
I think it'll be about a year or so and Android will be running on par with WinMo (WinPh?) with Flash and alternative browsers apps, and has a few more things to offer that other smartphone OS's can't. It's fun finding them. It's been really exciting watching the progress, and how hard people work for little or no money, just because it's open source.
Oh, and PhatPad was $44. My current Note app, NoteEverything was $2. I miss the stylus and making animations, but that's it. I certainly don't miss Activesync.
yes you are right, but the buttons in the market of that application, are both missing, inactive, you cannot click both of them, thats why i cant uninstall or install or open the app.. i still wonder how to clear the app store cache without factory reset or hard reset which is a really long way to follow.
hi everyone,
with the G2 coming out next month, I think this is gonna be my last attempt at getting my G1 working acceptably.
for those of you that would like to skip my sob story/history, you can skip to the next paragraph. i've had a G1 since july 2009. even though i do love it and android, the thing has constantly run horribly for me. constant lag, a history of force closes (although lately none of that luckily), lots of freezing, restarts etc. i've gone thru tons of different roms, currently on e-Xtreme 2.1 version 1.3. had lots of experienced people from these boards help me with flashing, setting up, reflashing, flashing again, setting up again, formatting my sd card, trying different setups, unrooting and rerooting. we've tried all different kinds of things to get me running well. i'm also at this point using NO widgets except the google search bar and the power widget included in 2.1. when i go to running services all i have is android keyboard, quick search box, gtalkservice, twidroyd, cm updater (impossible to shut off it seems), and setcpu. still i get constant lag from everything from opening messages, to opening websites, to getting back to the home screen, to pretty much everything. forget about loading the camera, it can take like 15 seconds sometimes! i frequently use cachemate to clear my cache. honestly right now the phone is working pretty much the best it's ever worked, but its still awful. also sometimes when i get back to my homescreen my icons don't show up. it's actually bad enough that sometimes i will just not bother doing something i wanted to do cause i dont feel like dealing with it lagging and/or freezing up. and forget about widgets. haha.
ok so, you may or may not have skipped all of that, but at this point, i want my phone to run better in a last ditch effort to maybe be able to stick with the g1 until my full contract is up in july 2011. if not i'm doing the early upgrade and reupping my 2 year contract and getting the g2 next month... what i'm wondering is maybe theres an app i have installed that's eating up memory in some way and is a known issue. i've searched around but haven't found anything about these, and rather than sit here and delete each one, one by one, waiting to see if the phone runs better, i figured i'd just type out a list and see if anyone knows of any known issues with any of these... so here it goes:
astro
barcode scanner
cachemate
calwidget
color flashlight
craigsnotifica
dolphin browser
droidball
drop
facebook
frontiers demo
googles
google sky map
gscript lite
last.fm
latitude
lyric droid
magic gem II demo
movies
myspace
nesoid
news and weather
newsrob
orbs knockoff
painting findings
pandora
pingdroid
replica island
rom manager
setcpu
springpad
soduku free
tangram master full
throw a panda
that's it. i really don't think that's so excessive. i mean theres only like 5 or 6 games in there and some of those things like setcpu, facebook and cachemate are pratically required for proper phone usage. and i wouldn't even bother having a phone without twidroyd and newsrob.
so has anyone heard of any known issues with lag caused by having one of these installed and/or one of these doing something in the background that slows stuff down?
thanks so much to anyone that helps. i'm willing to give this one more try. maybe even wiping and reflashing one more time, but after the dozen times i have already, i think i might just be expecting too much haha.
thanks
Dave
I don't know if simply due to my finger hovering to close to the screen, I read the new samsung taskmanager update permissions and decided no, thought I'd come away from that screen cleanly, but the notification bar said it's downloaded. It's hard to believe for one thing of many, that it takes our acceptance to take pictures, and just to update a taskmanager it seems like it asks for as much access as the whole of the g***le system, who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I'm not rooted or anything, but I wondered if the previous version can be just downloaded over it, and if any one has it (If I'm allowed to ask.). Also can any one take a look at the app and put my mind at rest. I thought when having to update samsung apps itself for the umpteenth time, it was quite refreshing how little it now wanted in the way of permissions, but unless I'm wrong and I may well be, it's leaning towards getting permissions in places where you wouldn't expect, don't know why I even bothered to look at a taskmanager, but it surprised me when I did. With all this stuff reporting home it's no wonder we have battery and data level problems. Anyway, question and mini rant over...lol.
I have xperia T with locked bootloader, so i can only try stock based roms. I was very satisfied with the phone, but not any more. I changed many roms, but with every rom, after about a month of usage phone starts to be be laggy, and slow. Especially the browser. It takes ages to load a page. Also typing seems to get laggy. After I flash different rom, everything gets to normal again. Does anyone have the same scenario, as. I am? Could something be done to speed up the phone?

Maybe you have many apps?
Maybe you have mang apps that runs in the background?
Maybe your phone is broken?
You could install some tweaks such as V6 Supercharger.
You could clear cache once a while.
You could let your phone rest.
For me, I don't face this problem.

I do have many apps. I clear cache once in a while, and phone feels better when i do that. But i never shut down or reset. I'll try to do that and see how it performs.
Thanks for your answer.

I guess you don't have any special "issue" with your phone.
Every single phone lags - period. Sooner or later, and this or that moment, it lags. To be honest, I'm ok with that for quite some time. Every app is getting more hungry with every new version, and when you're installing and updating apps on daily pattern, it simply becomes too heavy for system resources to handle. For example, if you do a factory reset now on your T/TX, and if you're sticking with stock rom, there is 300MBs of updates right after first boot. I was shocked when I saw that my system memory jumped from 270MBs of usage after first boot, to 530MBs just after system apps updates...
Android lag tendencies are old story now. Google did not solve this yet, and project butter didn't make any notable changes regarding UI lag. Yet, I would't change it for iOS or WP for a whole world.
There for there will be trim support in android 4.3
It's like your windows based pc, after a while it will get slow. And so are android phones.
- Keep the least number of apps possible on the phone
- Remove widgets you don't really need
- Chose the smaller sized app with the humbler memory foot print, if there are alternatives
- Trim occasionally as what my predecessor mentioned, there are trim apps out there, like Lagfix
- Reboot once a day.
Sounds profane, I know.
i've tried many custom roms with LBL but never had this problem.
all i do is restart the phone once a week or two weeks..

I was considering to chnage my phone, and go for S4, or HTC ONE, but because of those "Android lag tendencies", after a month of not reseting or cleaning the cache, they should lag olso. Am I right? I'm not familiar with WP or IOS. Do they have lag tendencies also ?

Well, you will probably get a bit snappier performance with two mentioned phones, but believe me, if anybody tell you their phones are not lagging at all, like never ever, they lie. I played with S4, and I played with HTC One, and these also have glitches from time to time.
Regarding iOS and WP, I never personaly used any of those, but I played a lot with that phones, as my friends are having them. iOS is generally considered to have quite fluid interface, but that's because iOS is totally different system and is handling user interface with different priorities. And honestly, it is fluid. Especially since iPhone 4... But on the other side, it is such a limited system, that I never ever considered switching to it. WP is also quite fluid, but again, that giant-squares interface is very dull to me, and WP ecosystem is still far behind Android.
Point is, I'm not willing to change Android for some other weaker system, just for the sake of a snappier and more fluid interface...
But that's just me. Maybe somebody else is having different priorities.
Thanks for the honest answer. I can live with the reset from time to time. I also don't consider changing Android for iOS or Windows because Android has so many features over them. I hope in the future Google will manage to eliminate that lag.

We all do... Practically, the only argument iOS and WP users are having, is that magic word "lag".
Other than that, Android is unbeatable in all other areas.
Big colourful icons, multi-function widgets, and many other eye candy functions use system resources without delivering a real value for the user. Windows has plump tiles, and the app drawer is just a simple list of apps. Just as examples. My wifes windows phone has 2/3 of the hardware power, but it worked fluid any time.
Change the icons to simple symbols, make a vertical scroll app drawer with tiny icons, remove widgets, use the app drawer to access apps. And so on. It will bring you leaps forward in terms of functionality.
Most will say that unused memory is wasted memory. I believe on the long run it's better apps have a proper exit button, and clear themselves from memory when done.
