[solved]bootloader won't let me update - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So usually I've read this is a matter of the wrong spl, or unsigned files, or other things that don't seem to be my problem. I've searched for days now and would LOVE some help.
I'm downgrading for a warranty return because my touchscreen doesn't work. I try to follow the directions found in several threads but I get hung up at the same spot.
When flashing the dreaimg.nbh file in the stock bootloader, bootloader starts, checks, then I get to the screen that asks you to press power to flash, or action to cancel. No buttons on this screen do anything. Not the "3 finger solute" to reboot, not power, not action, nothing. Just no response. And yes, I waited, and waited.
I think I've tried about every combination of everything I can think of, but please, your suggestions mean a lot to me.
The only thing I can think of, is that maybe the updated radio isn't compatible with RC29, and the phone knows this somehow and won't let me flash RC29 with my current radio? Does that make any sense? Do I need to flash an old radio, then the dreaimg.nbh?
Thanks!
(anybody wanna tell me how to get a screenshot from the bootloader and I'd be glad to show it, but it's just the standard screen)

I say try! ahaha
Same thing happened to me with the touchscreen lol.
I just flashed the old image didn't even bother to update or anything and just sent it in.
And I didn't get charged for voiding the warranty.

And no the new radio is compatible with RC29 I've used my friends phone when we were rooting it and he had the new radio.

Thanks for that, if I can't figure it out, I guess I'll try the warranty. I'm still going to work on it though, I can't imagine that someone hasn't had an unresponsive bootloader before though, and know how to fix it.
I've always done things the retard way, but I've spent the last week learning ALOT. I've got adb and fastboot setup, is there a way to flash the nbh file via fastboot or adb, bypassing the bootloader?
And FYI for others, with the nonworking touchscreen you can't "press the droid" after a factory reset. SDK, and androidscreencast fixed that, you can see your screen on your computer and use your mouse to click!
http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/
I also just got droid explorer, which lets you do lots of things with a GUI, including invoke androidscreencast, man that would've been easier a week ago! At least now I am able to use the phone as I had to disable the wipe unlock, and touch the droid to recover from a wipe!
I imagine this would be perfect for people with broken screens as well!

the .NBH includes EVERYTHING but an SPL... it rewrites Radio, splash1 system and usrdata...... if you cant press the action button, first try re-flashing the SPL, then try cleaning out your trackball
the action button is the trackball BTW...

Thanks for those tips. But I've done that and it still doesn't work. Even tried downloading the spl from a variety of sources, and doing a checksum to make sure it's not corrupted. And the trackball works in every other application. Basically, the stock bootloader just won't respond to any command (action to cancel, power to update, 3 buttons to reboot, nothing). It DOES recognize the .nbh, which is a step further than most bootloader fail threads I see.
Is it possible to flash an nbh file using fastboot or adb? I've figured out how to do update.zips this way, but not .nbh. I'd still have a custom bootloader, but everything else would be stock.
Thanks again everyone!

So if anybody can help, maybe this bit is useful too, I get no response from the hard spl either. Example, it is my understanding that the standard hard spl screen (with no .nbh file on card it dislplays phone radio info at top, serial0/10, 3 android skaters at bottom) that screen I should be able to press call+power+menu to reboot, right? I get nothing, and thought I should. This spl won't flash the nbh either, I guess because it won't register the "press power to contine".
1. Any ideas? My keys work when in standard usage and in recovery, why won't they work in any of the spls?
2. still wondering if/how I can fastboot the dreaimg.nbh file?

Make it unbootable (don't brick it - just wipe your current ROM and recovery partition) and restore to stock G1 SPL and if they say anything about "It won't boot" blame it on shipping.
Have you tried updating with a engineering SPL? I don't know if that would have any difference. Also, is your sdcard still partitioned? I think it has to be all fat32 or a goldcard (no idea where a goldcard actually come in on G1).

Brilliant! I bet it is the partitioning! I now remember that I thought about that for a minute, but tried other things. I'll try a fresh, all fat32 partitioning and give that a shot. Otherwise, good call on just deleting the partitions.
(actually excited to have something hopeful to try for a change!)

Solved!
Cheers to you R3s!
If anybody else finds themselves with an unresponsive bootloader, make sure your sdcard is not partitioned.
For the step by step folks who may be wanted to return a G1 to stock, in my case for a warranty return because the touchscreen doesn't work:
put the stock 1 G card in a card reader, popped it in the usb drive of a winxp system, my computer, right click on drive, format (not quick) fat32.
copied over stock spl renamed as update.zip
copied over DREAIMG.nbh
unmount sd card
pop into g1
home+power to get into recovery
apply update.zip
reboot
wipe
reboot + hold camera button
power button to apply
wait, this time I got the status bar immediately
action button to restart when prompted
reboots to spl
3 finger salute to reboot (call+end+menu)
BAM, back to the android to press the button to start
(and fully stuck there now since I don't have a touchscreen, my daughter called me crazy for being so happy, she asked if I fixed it and I said no I broke it!)
So there ya go, anybody else has this problem, reformatting the sdcard isn't enough, you have to remove the partitions.

Flashing radio rom, phone won't reboot?

I downloaded T-Mobile-UK_2.19.11_Radinly from the FTP site and tried flashing it tonight. I'm not as addicted as some of you but I've flashed my phone several times before without any problems. This time it's not working...
I ran the updater that came in the T-Mobile-UK_2.19.11_Radinly zip file and everything seemed to be going as usual. When it got to the point where the phone restarts and it is supposed to start flashing the rom, the phone shuts down but never comes back on. I need to pop out the battery in order to get the phone to come back on at all, but it works fine once I do that.
I also tried a copy of the RomUpdateUtility that I had used previously but the same thing happened. Not sure what info would be helpful in troubleshooting this but...

Thanks for any help you can give!
You may try to enter bootloader manually by pressing Camera+reset, then use the RUU.
What's the right sequence if I do it manually?
1. Hit Camera+reset to enter bootloader manually.
2. Start up RUU and go through the process on my PC.
OR
1. Start up RUU and get to the point where my phone won't restart properly.
2. Hit Camera+reset to manually bring up the bootloader.
Or something else?
Thanks!
The first version is the right way.
I was able to get this to work, but I found the answer in another thread. I had to take out my SD card, and then the RUU rebooted my phone as usual. Maybe I'm crazy but I don't remember ever having to do that before.
However... I tried forcing bootloader with the camera+soft reset trick and it didn't work... even if I took out the SD card. Does this mean there is something wrong with my phone?
If you're able to boot in to your OS then your bootloader is fine. If it wasn't your phone wouldn't boot at all. How are you trying to get in to the boot loader? Are you turning your phone off and pressing and holding the camera button and then using the power button to turn it on or are you using the soft reset hole? Use the power button if you weren't.
As for your phone not rebooting if you have your SD card in it, it sounds like it's time to reformat the card. Hopefully you have everything backed up off of it.
Thanks for your help... I *was* using the reset button. Now I can force the bootloader just fine.
My SD "seems" to be OK (I can see all the files and I tested a few for readability), but I'll give the format a shot for next time I flash.
p.s. When you try to format your SD card, it is recommended to use Raw disk editor (e.g. WinHex) to zero out first several bytes of the card, then repartition the card (1 partition) and format again (using FAT), then the bootloader will no longer thinks your card is a special one and toggle some strange action.

Stuck on bootloader screen.

So I had root access. (i.e. when I first booted my G1 up it said something about a developer phone) and I tried flashing the dreaimg.nbh file to go back down to RC29. It fails every time won't let me do anything else. It just stays srtuck on the bootloader screen when I try to reboot. I've tried about everything I could think of and I'm at wits end. I really hope this problem can be fixed. Does anyone have any suggestions or know what went wrong? Thanks.
Re-download dreaimg.nbh file again. The one you're using may be corrupted.
Why do you want to go RC29 if you have root access? You should be able to flash anything on your phone as is, RC29 is only needed to gain the root.
It won't let me do anything. I'm unable to do anything to the SD card. Although, while typing this I just thought of something. If I got a card reader I could erase the file from my card since I can't do anything to the phone. Maybe that would work. But who knows because I've tried removing the card and booting up and it remains stuck on the bootloader screen. I literally can not do anything else, it's just permanently stuck like that. So I can't mess with anything. And the reason I was trying to downgrade is because I was trying to start all over again but I think I might have ended up screwing myself instead...
I am may be wrong, and please forgive me if I am, but from your post count I am getting the picture that you're pretty new to this.
Tell me if what you did is any different from these steps
You booted phone into h-boot mode holding power and camera buttons
Your phone found dreaimg.nbh and ran it on it's own.
You restarted the phone and got stuck in the boot loop.
Confirm that this is what happened
No, your assumption is not wrong at all. I am pretty new to this.
Yes, I did reboot my phone while holding down the camera button.
It found dreaimg.nbh and ran it but it failed so now I'm stuck in the boot loop with it constantly trying, and failing, to load dreaimg.
Thanks so much for your quick responses.
When it says "failed to load dreaimg.nbh" it means that it does not see it. I have a feeling that a file that you had was zipped.
Let's do this
Boot into recovery by holding power and home buttons
select wipe/factory reset or something along those lines and try booting up a your phone again. I'll be lurking around so just post what you find.
Take a note of which recovery you're running while you're at it too.
No, the file I had was not zipped I don't think cause it sees it and tries to update. It says update in progress then I get the progress bar but when it's finished it tells me: Update Terminate. Update Fail. Then it just goes back to the multi-colored bootloader screen and won't shut off. I can reset it by pressing call+menu+end but then it just starts all over again. So, I can't boot into recovery mode. Matter of fact, the only way to turn the phone off is to remove the battery. Otherwise, it just starts in bootloader mode and continues this viscous cycle.
At this point I don't even care about installing a ROM or anything, I just want a working phone.
I see. Yep.. you're S.O.L.
Just to make sure... when your phone is off and you hold power and home buttons it just goes to h-boot screen, right if so then unfortunately there's only one thing to do: get a card reader, re-download .nbh file and start over. At this point you have no working recovery or rom on your phone. Once you get that going you should be on your way to secure a root and flash whatever rom you need to.
Is it even fat32?
Damn. That's what I thought. I should have just left well enough alone until I did more research and knew exactly what I was doing but I get ADD when I'm hungover. Oh well. Thanks for your help.
This will happen from time to time.. it's always desirable to have a card reader handy. Also.. since you have nothing to loose, this would be a great time to re-format and re-partition your sdcard so you can start squiky clean.
Good luck.... let us know when this is worked out by adding [SOLVED] to the title of this thread.

HTC Pure won't boot, flash stuck at 0% HELP!!

Please help, I was uninstalling some applications from my HTC PURE and had to restart the phone, when it was rebooting it hung at the ATT screen and there was small red text in the bottom left screen.
I had previously installed HardSPL 1.83 but relocked it via instructions in 2nd post because I'm still deciding if I wanna keep the phone and didn't wanna do anything for warrenty reasons.
I have the stock ROM and never installed anything except the HardSPL and the revert.
Please help me, I have tried to load the ATT Pure Stock/Shipped ROM I found here but everytime I try to in the bootloader mode it says either "no image file" or hangs at loading depending what I've tried to name the file. Also I've tried to run customruu.exe to install the stock ROM and also tried to install HardSPL 1.83 but it hangs at 0% and eventually wants to do recovery on the PC.
How do I fix this problem, and preferabbly get it back stock. I do have a warrenty, well unless I violated it by installing HardSPL then doing the revert.
Thanks

Of course you hard reset?
Make sure your SD card is formatted to Fat32 and you may mant to try a different card, 2gb - 4gb.
What does your SPL say now in bootloader mode?
Yes I tried a hard reset. I can try another sd card the one I used was fat32 and 2gb. I believe it says 1.33 can't look now but I know it's not the same as an untouched pure.
Help!
You are not the only one who is having this issue. I am frustrated beyond frustrated. How are other people flashing their out of the box ATT Pures using the same exact steps but I can't? It's making no sense.
1. I turn off firewalls.
2. I've tried both usb and sd card boot, didnt work
3. I installed the enablerapi cab
Nothing works and I am having the same problem you are having...it stays on 0% forever and it doesnt even prompt me saying there is an error it just sits on 0% until I unplug it...

Are you trying to HSPL or flash a ROM?
Well
According to what i've read, you have to do Hard SPL before you flash a rom, so i've been trying to HardSPL and it doesn't work! I even tried to skip the step and just flash the rom and it doesnt work..
Now, I also have an ATT Tilt to and I JUST flashed a rom 30 mins ago, so it has nothing to do with firewalls or anything as far as my computer goes, I think its the phone, so what can I do?
How to flash HSPL.

Its a good thing flashing the ROM didn't work, you'd be bricked.
For flashing HSPL, it seems that newer phones are having an issue.
Something may have been changed that is preventing the unlocker from working.
Do the following;
1. Hard Reset
Instructions:
- Soft reset with stylus
- Hold Vol up & Vol dwn simultaneously until white screen appears
- Following screen prompts, Press Vol up to confirm.
2. Go to bootloader mode.
Instructions:
- Turn off your device using the power button
- When the device is turned off, simultaneously press the Vol dwn + Power button
- Your device will startup in Bootloader mode
Should say SPL: 1.33 or something.
3. Sync your phone to your PC.
4. Install enablerapinew.cab
5. Unzip both Topaz_CustomRUU_v1.1.zip & SPL_183.zip to the same folder
6. Run the CustomRUU.exe
This process should install HSPL and now when you enter bootloader mode you should see something like SPL: 1.83 Olinex.
If so, you're ready to start flashing custom ROMs.
If not, please report all errors to the HSPL thread or PM Olipro.
**I take no responsibility for any loss of data or functionality of your device.**
See, the problem with your instructions are...
1. You cannot soft reset with the stylus, I don't see a button anywhere on the phone ( ATT PURE not Diamond 2 )
2. Holding Vol up & Vol down simultaneously until white screen appears doesn't work. The only thing that works is when I hold Vol Down and the screen with the colors come up, not a white screen.
So i'm still lost. Thanks for your help regardless. I just really want to flash a new rom so I can stop using this stupid slow ATT rom.
So basically you are messing with your Pure and don't know how to soft reset?
Remove the stylus and in the groove for the stylus is a red dot, that is the red reset button. Insert the tip of the stylus in the red dot and push. Now the Pure will soft reset.
Probably should familiarize yourself with the device before you finish turning it into a brick!
Oh wow. That is so hidden.
On my Touch Pro 2 its right there on the side where you can see it, with words.
Anyway, Thank you very much, i'll try that.
Still, what about the Up and Down button volume button function so I can go into bootloader mode?

Now that you found the soft reset button.... follow my procedures.
Note- you have to hold the keys IMMEDIATELY after soft reset before the boot screen appears.
Ok.

Didn't work, I re-did the steps you listed 3 times over to make sure I was correct and the same results. I guess ATT has found a way to stop their phones from being unlocked.
Thank you for your help regardless.

You should probably post over in the HSPL thread.
You'll get more help over there. There are many others having similar issues and there may be a fix over there.
FYI, when you get to the tri colored screen, that is where it shows what SPL you have currently.
Updating rom freeze
Hi, I don't post much if at all, normally you guys have it right on the button, this is my 3rd phone to run custom roms on but for some reason it just freezes on the "Updating ROM image on your PDA Phone..." screen and doesn't continue past, on my last 2 phones active sync worked well with updating to custom roms, seems like my Pure produces the same error after the attempt, its a communication error "ERROR [262] : UPDATE ERROR", now recovering from the error is not a issue, we all have familiarity in that area but I was wondering if it could be something as simple as the cable that was sent with my phone or if its possible to flash rom through sd card as opposed to using active sync?

Yes, you can flash through storage card, just rename the .nbh to TOPAIMG.nbh, Put in root of storage card and enter bootloader mode.
You have HSPL'd, right?

I was just going through the thread. I have the same issue. i have place topaimg.nbh in the root of storage card and entered bootloade mode, it shows loading and is stuck at 0%.
HSPL is 1.83. Went through entire thread of HSPL but unfortunately didn't find any solution.

Just to confirm, you have to name it exactly "TOPAIMG.nbh".
With all of the people that have tried all methods and still can't flash, something must have changed in the stock SPL.

From HTC site (HTC Pure support):
What is a Soft Reset and how is it performed?
A soft reset basically resets the memory structure in the handheld. This recovers the device from memory conflicts, corrupted system service chains (mainly due to attempting hacks), memory leaks, and system lockups due to the “Fatal Exception” program errors. Removing the battery from the device while it is still powered on is NOT a soft reset and can actually damage the device.
A Soft Reset is performed by:
Remove the Battery cover and the Stylus from the device.
Insert the tip of the stylus into the Reset hole located at the entry point of the stylus silo.
The device will reboot.

[Q] Please help my X1

I dont know whether i have asked a dumb question or not but i've searched for all the forum, it's all "discussing" and too much scattered thing that i still cant see the specified way for my phone.
Yes, again this question, I tried to flash Energy Rom on my phone, by USB and by SD card, everytime i reboot or turn off my phone, i will need to connect through USB to boot on, or not it will display tri-color screen and flash No Image File. I copied the image file to SD card and now when i boot the phone it tell me to update the rom on SD card... And if i delete this image on my SDcard then...it's again, nothing too much to say...
Is there any way to let my phone boot on without USB wired and no tri-color screen (i guess i hate that much).
Hope getting help from you all, and please tell me step by step, i'm newbie anyway, please.
By the way, anything related to mtty or HardSPL, SoftSPL i still dont work it out. Please give me some tips.

As i pay attention to the bootloader, i'm sure that it's already made the HardSPL and the phone can recognize the image on the SD Card or by USB method. The first ROM was flash on the phone is not me, this is my friend's phone, I'm just trying to help him around then.
I tried to flash the rom by USB method, but when i restarted the phone without the USB connected to PC, it did show the bootloader (i just touch the power button, not volumn button or any other key)~ then i plug USB which connect the phone to pc, soft reset it and it boot to the system again.
I try to flash it by SD-card method but it still the same. I mean that the phone can be flashed new ROM, but it's just keeping get into the bootloader everytime i restart the phone
If the image is on the SD Card it'll tell me to upgrade ROM, if the image is not on the SD Card then "No Image File!" was flashed on~
Any ideas? My friend tells me that this happened when he tried to install Sogou - chinese input application. Is there any conflicted that cause this matter?
for little detail, the phone always shows up Successfully, but it still enter the bootloader mode at next restart. Is my flash-job done or just a mistake one?
additionally, this may be bad... remove the battery doesnt work. Please help.
help me please, do i have to hardspl again? I still cant enter WM unless i have a usb wire connected phone to pc and softreset it. Any idea?

hm, since you said the first flashed job was not yours, i think it's better that you repeat the whole procedures again starting from hardspl. but make sure you're using the correct version. re-download again if you're not sure.
also while most people rarely done so, it's bad to have multiple rom image exist in any root folder in your phone, storage card and your pc flashing tool folder (.nbh, .rom, etc), but sometimes people do forget or **** just happens.
I recommend that you remove both sim & microsd card before going any further.
then try to boot into wm with usb cable connected like you said.
take a quick look at folder and file structure in the rom. from here i would do it slightly different than others, with no battery pulls, just using the reset button. (imho, every battery pull may cause unforeseen damage especially with power still running.)
a. push hard reset combo button (don't let go) and push reset for a few secs to hard reset.
b. after hard reset rebooting the phone, push bootloader/rom update combo buttons and hit reset for a few sec. remember to keep pushing those buttons while you release the reset pin.
c. reflash hardspl, repeat step b, reflash rom. allow rom to finish doing its job. some rom may go to sleep while installing/customizing, don't let that happend.
d. just do random thing like play a game or whatever for a few minutes or more. then soft reset or power down.
e. turn on phone and wait, if problem's solved. if it is, hard reset again. continue as usual. if it's not, try other rom (ask people for md5 checksum, compare with your download). if none works, find more help.

take a quick look at folder and file structure in the rom. from here i would do it slightly different than others, with no battery pulls, just using the reset button.

I've just tried out the task29, it's done normally, then flash the new rom.
1. I dont think the rom are buggy, because i changed between 2 roms and it's the same matter.
2. I dont need to use bootloader/rom update combo button because it's directly entered whenever i turn on the phone (without connected to pc) (i really really dont know why)
3. Hard reset and i have my WM work again but it's still the romupdate at boot time.
I wonder if jumpSPL did all this problems, I tried mtty by task 0 and set 14 0 but it wont restart the phone, tried to format the ROM by mtty (task 32) but it wont weep out, errors given: bad... at address...
Why does it always want me to update the ROM? Is there anything wrong with jumpSPL?
the problem still, please help me give a look to this.
ouch, last time I use mttty were ancient wm2003 era. i'll try to look for info, but can't promised anything.
at this point it's recommended to reflash the complete original stock rom, undo hardspl.
check the hardspl thread about restoring to factory default. best luck to you.

[Q] Urgent: Nexus failing to boot

Hi all,
I have had my N1 for 1year and two weeks now (yes, warranty just expired). I was charging the device and it seemed to overheat and reboot. I unplugged it, took the battery out, let it rest for a bit and tried to boot it again. The phone now gets stuck on the X logo (not moving) and never boots.
I'm currently abroad (in the UK) and can't have it sent back for repair (I'd have to pay the repair too).
Will rooting the phone and installing an alternate OS fix my phone?
Is there any way to get HTC to honor the warranty after two weeks of expiration (I've been getting this problem for a while now, but that was only an issue if I made extensive use of the device while charging, which I almost never do so I didn't bother.)
Is there any way to fix this issue without messing with rooting? I'm abroad right now and all I want is my phone to work.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Try booting into bootloader from power off (vol- pwr) if that doesn't work then try the 3 figure salute (pwr vol- tb) your phone should boot into fastboot then just select bootloader.
If either of these work the your good you can get the static x fixed all you need to do is passimg (search wiki if you don't know what it is) as for the charging problem passimg will factory reset the phone so if that doesn't fix it then no you'll need to try rooting or it might be hardware.
Yes, I'm able to go into the bootloader.
I tried clearing the storage, choosing fastboot, etc. The phone seems to be working, just won't boot past the static X.
From your last reply, you're saying passimg has good chances to fix my phone. What does that involve? Do you have a link to a how-to that I could follow (it would really be a bad time for me to brick my phone, a good how-to would be really appreciated).
Cheers!
Yes passimg is used for many things it just reflashes a shipment ROM to the phone through bootloader. Like I said you can visit the wiki to have a how to here is a link http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nexus_One/Guides_%26_Tutorials scroll down to "Unroot / Restore your Nexus" then follow the instructions. This should restore you to frg33 then you just need to update back to 2.3.4.
NOTE: this will wipe your data.
Ahh there's a way to unroot the nexus one now!
I had no idea! This is good to know (last time I checked was in December I think).
I will give that passimg a try as soon as I get home.
Can anyone confirm that this ("Attention: Latest stock ROMs don't flash using PASSIMG.ZIP method. Use the provided latest Froyo PASSIMG, and upgrade it after flashing.") means I can still reflash using this if I have the latest ROM (2.3.4) but will simply have to update again after (which I might not do given the issues I'm facing).
Cheers!
Confirmed - Dude is giving you good info... xD
Just to verify, unrooting is not the same as relocking. If you unlocked your bootloader (have a little lock symbol under the X screen), there is no way to relock it.
But the passimg is a good option. It will take you back to an older version of Android, and then you just let the system update itself.
Since you are out of your warranty, I can highly suggest looking into custom firmwares. These give you a lot more features and in many cases, perform better. CyanogenMod is probably the most popular one. These will fully replace your Android OS. CyanogenMod really doesn't even differ in look from stock all that much. Most people probably wouldn't even have a clue they are running something different, except for the stability and performance increases.
You can read up about this stuff in the wiki as well.
Oh, I see, thanks for the info.
I'm actually trying to get the FRG83 passimg file but the link is dead. Does anyone have an alternate one?
Use the FRG33 image
Alright,
I unlocked the device, used fastboot to write the recovery "Amon_Ra's Recovery".
Then I rebooted, went to the bootloader (trackball + power), went to "recovery" but the phone still gets stucked on the X (with the unlocked padlock logo).
Any advices?
Try the passimg, but it's possible that you are looking at hardware failure...

If you are still running stock Android, you can't reboot between installing the recovery and getting into it. Stock Android will replace it. Try to go back to the bootloader and select recovery then, or fastboot to load the recovery, and then use fastboot to boot off of it.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "c:\location to\recovery.img"
fastboot boot recovery "c:\location to\recovery.img"
Hopefully this will get you into Amon_RA so you can try again.
But the passimg method is used in the bootloader, not in recovery. You don't need a custom recovery to use the passimg method.
Amazing, thanks for pointing out my mistake, that give me a little bit of hope now . (I was at the point where I'd open the thing and look for a broken solder joint.)
I will try this as soon as I get home!
**Edit** I actually am not sure if I really rebooted or went straight to recovery. I'll update this thread tonight.
According to some other people, this would be a common issue with the internal memory dieing.
Is there a utility I can use to check the state of the memory?
None that I know of. Our phone internal memory uses the yaffs2 (Yet Another Flash File System v2) file system. I haven't heard of any programs that can check it.
Same situation
Hello, all. I haven't signed in on here in ages just because I've been so happy with how my Nexus has been running.
I ran into the same problem as OP stated.
I think I have some sort of hardware issue because my phone used to randomly freeze and couldn't be restarted unless I pulled the battery. Now it's at the point where I can't even turn it on because nothing happens when I press the power button or if I try to boot into recovery. This is really frustrating.
Is there any way to check for hardware damage? My warranty is over as well so I'd have to pay for any repairs to my phone if I sent it in.
If it's running, you can try to pull a log, and see what error reports you get?

Your power button might just be dead. Try having the phone plugged into a power source and removing and reinserting the battery. While you are doing that, hold the Volume Down button. This will get you into the bootloader which would allow a passimg to be performed. Hopefully your reboots aren't a hardware problem.
So , after pulling my battery, pulling the sim and the sd card, it finally turned on and went to recovery without freezing. I was able to wipe and reflash cyan 7. It's working well for now, but I'm really afraid this is going to happen again because this isn't the first time that it's just froze repeatedly.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?
Alright,
I did "fastboot flash recovery MYIMG" then "fastboot boot MYIMG", didn't work.
Then I tried "fastboot flash recovery MYIMG" then go to bootloader (without rebooting) and selected recovery.
Still no luck.
It always freezes on the static X logo. What else can I do? Will using passimg be any different (I don't have any way to put the file on the micro SD card but I can manage to do it if it's worth the shot).
Thanks
