Sprints 2.1 was just released. So now what - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sprints 2.1 was just released. So now what
Software Version: 2.27.651.5
http://shop.sprint.com/en/software_downloads/pda_smartphone/htc_hero.shtml

Now we wait for the floodgates to open of all the new ROMs built off of it, and for it to be eventually rooted.

sit back and watch all the people cry about their phones not being rooted, then we'll all wait for kernel source, then its off to the evo. nothing is gonna change, 2.1 roms are already being developed.

We already have kernel source

Thats why I went to costco and bought a pallet full of tissues for those sorry sods that were dumb enough to flash even with the warnings that they were clearly disregarding.
Come on now, pass the tissue boxes around, there are plenty where that came from!

I have a question. If you hero is rooted, can I upgrade to 2.1 or I need unrooted the phone first? sorry for my enghish.

I'm wondering the same thing. I've ripped the rom out of the .exe but I'm afraid to flash it for fear of loosing root. Does anyone know if I'll be able to still use my custom recovery if i flash the extracted rom?

as long as you don't flash the recovery.img or hboot stuff, just unyaffs the system.img, grab the boot.img, and make a flashable zip. or, you could just get everything I just said here in an already flashable zip:

Ok, thanks. Just trying my hand at developing/ modding. I'm pretty good with modding other folks work, but now I want to learn how to create the roms too. I'll probably continue using DC roms until I get the technique down.

Has this been done yet to the official RUU off sprints website? It is different from the leaked "official release" My linux machine is down right now so I cant easily go about making my own rom, all I'm looking for is a rom with root, SU and bb made from the official sprint release pulled off there website.
With the leaked official release I still had the audio problem.
I flashed the official ruu from sprints website on my phone that was going in for a warranty exchange and ran it for the day before turning it in, and I had no audio loss problems at all.

yes it's been done to the ruu, there is frsh 2.1.1 or fresh toast, they both use the latest ruu, and there is the rom damage made and its just the stock ruu extracted. go look around

The rom damage made is from the official "leak", not from the official RUU that sprint has available on their website.
As for fresh' roms, it is unclear whether he means the leaked official release, or the actual sprint downloadable release from their servers.

How to use the RUU leaks we have after OTA

Some say it isn't possible, because of the radio version.
Thats not it at all. HBOOT was updated, and as such, keeps the RUU from working.
However:
Anything is possible with Android.
http://androidforums.com/all-things...16-how-revert-back-earlier-version-hboot.html
This method will allow you to remove the OTA by using RUU leaks we already have. I did it myself last night after messing up my phone trying to flash an old radio through clockwork
Read: Its not a radio issue that would keep you from updating, its an HBOOT version issue.
720p OTA Leak:
CID:VZW__001
ROM:1.36.605.0
You need to use the older OS version if you want to revert to an older RUU, I believe. Not sure the CID matters either. The img file I provided that worked, I used HTC_002.

Sweet, didnt know if it did or not.
I am taking a bit of leap of faith here, but I think it all gets overwritten by the RUU anyway.

Because the link above makes it seem as if it's on the pc not the sdcard. Maybe I'm missing somthing.

almost everyone here is rooted with cwm. if you have cwm the install wont work, you need a fresh sbf off 1.8.3, not to mention that you could have caused a brick because of your cache not having update.

It was 5.5.959 that was released from VZW and 5.6.890 is the latest leak. What is this? 5.5.1? 5.5.184? Either is significantly earlier than 5.5.959, but the date stamp shows Aug 12, 2011, so I am intrigued. Hopefully the version number just isn't accurate.

If it can be flashed through fastboot/RSD it's about as "surefire" as you'll get without access to nvflash. Just don't much around with your Bootloader and you should be fine

OP: Thank you for posting this file, it is the firmware that was pulled from the server that is an unofficial build. So everyone should know that, you will fix your phone but as for now you will be off the upgrade path.
One question - if I put the file "swu.zip" into the root of /sdcard and name it "update.zip", will I then be able to restore to stock from fastboot without using a PC?
If this works, it'll allow me to mod the phone while on the move, but have a get-out-of-jail card to restore to stock at any point. I spend a lot of time commuting, so this would allow me to use my D3 to learn more about android when I'd normally just be using it to watch Family Guy

OTA Update

Here's the zip of the OTA that was pushed out. It won't install through either CWM or TWRP, so can someone who's more knowledgeable in these matters make it flashable?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/821854/OTAPkg.zip
And in case it helps, here's the log from CWM from trying to flash it manually:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/821854/recovery.log
And yes, as with any OTA, you run the risk of losing root, etc. But for me, I really don't care. I've even tried pushing the included stock recovery, but it doesn't work like this. You get a phone with an exclamation point over it (I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about) when you try to boot into that recovery. A quick push of TWRP back onto the phone fixed that error, but I still can't flash the update, obviously. Anyone want to take a crack at it?
Thanks to nuclear_eclipse for getting this and the log for us!

That symbol just means that it doesn't know what file to use for the update; this is part of what get's communicated somehow from the OS to the recovery during reboot, but I'm not familiar enough with the way recoveries work to know how to trigger that myself. I would assume this is a similar mechanism to how ROM Manager et al can tell CWM/TWRP what to flash.

That makes total sense. I guess it's not automatically checking the folder that Software Update puts it in. I've got another 22 hours until I can get Software Update to check again. I'll push the stock recovery before I do that, unless someone makes this flashable through TWRP or CWM before then.
In my stock Rom thread there are new files up. They are the ota roms. So if you are running stock, download the odex one ending in 1.08 and flash in recovery, no need to wipe data. Then pull boot.img and fastboot flash it. You now have the ota software. I will post instructions to upgrade the firmware that came with the ota

[Q] Updating my rooted phone without OTA?

So my phone keeps screaming at me to install a update, stock Rom only rooted, downloaded it to find out I cant install it with out the stock recovery and it would probably unroot my phone....
So I'm kinda confused as to what I need to download to update.
This all steams from how my old lady is picking up 4G at our house on her s4 and I'm stuck on 3g and I think it's because I haven't updated in a long time.

I'm with you... I tried doing my own research, found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2795856) and asked if flashing the "Modified Firmware w/ Radio" file would be the correct one to give me all of the needed OTA updates. I was told yes (though as you mention, the size difference doesn't make sense), so I flashed it in Fastboot.
...and I still have the system update notification on my phone which I can't get rid of. If you figure it out, please post here. Thanks.
I hope to have the process all figured out once 5.0 is released so that I can upgrade without wiping, as folks who are not rooted and take the OTA will be able to do.
