greetings,
my n1 is Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Build number: EPE54B
US AT&T Version.
never rooted or anything. stock.
will the update.zip 2.2 update work for me?
Thanks in advance.
Same here too!!!!! I WANT my upgrade to FROYO 2.2!!!!!
99% sure you need EPE27.
See my thread, I'm getting an error trying to update from stock recovery via EPE54B.
Same problem with my nexus one.
My buildnumber is EPE54B too.
How to handle this?
At this point, you need to root.
Hey coolbho3000,
how to root..as I am also under EPE54B. Can you guide all of us to a link or some documents where we can read and understand this.
I am new to this Nexus one thing..and recently got my new phone.
Would appreciate your help...
and why we have to root to update anything....as I think rooting will void the warranty
and where we can find the build numbers details..and what is the latest build which google has released..as I bought the phone 2 months ago only..
really appreciate your help..
Sadly you cannot do it without unlocking your bootloader it seems, and that does void your (Software) warranty it seems... So there you have it! We must just be patient
be patient guys,
Me and my pal got our n1's together, I rooted my one but he didnt and now his one is having problems (blank screen even though it goes to recovery and bootloader). He sent his one to get a replacement, I am gonna be screwed if anything happens to mine though :S
so be patient and you will get your froyo and eat it too, very soon.

Nonsense. You can boot into recovery and flash the original google update.zip.
edit, okay, I'm not sure. It will work from 27, but I'm unsure if it works for 54, misread that part.
A little guide:
- Download the file from the google servers. (I can't post the link, but it is everywhere.)
- Copy to the root of your SD card and rename to update.zip.
- Turn off your phone
- Boot into bootloader by holding vol down + trackball + powerbutton
- Wait for the green text to come and disapear
- Select recovery
- You will see a triangle, now hold vol up + power
- Select something with update.zip (not sure what the exact sentence is, you can't miss it.)

That works only on the stock ERE27.
AT&T/Rogers/Vodafone Nexus Ones have a different build. In this case you'll either have to wait or root your device.
Looks like I'm playing the waiting game then.

54?
Alright could I just get an answer as to why my t mobile nexus one has a build number off the 54? I'm rooted and was running cyanogen, but I thought that should have shown a different build number? Well either way, I have froyo now but i was just confused...I'm probably just missing something
Hey, I just read an article at Android and Me where they claim there is a new update for EPE54B build. Go check it out, I . http://androidandme.com/2010/06/news...update-frf85b/
I already installed it and works like a charm. The instructions for a manual install are there.

Hello Xda-Developers..
Well to make a very very long story short.. I got major phone problems. It started when I decided to Mod. My phone and followed a guide on Youtube to Mod/Jailbreak your phone. And I must admit it worked.. But it took a toll on me. Ok this is exactly what I did.. I moved the Dreamin.nbh file into my SD card.. Held down the Power + Camera button and everything seemed ok. Basically I followed everything step by step and it worked ok.. When I was finished rooting it I installed Jfrek-Rc33 followed the steps to do that.. When I got it on I was very excited.. after. While of reading about it I decided to go and get my old Apps back on my phone.. I went on the market and I couldn't find any of them.. I looked into downloading it online and I still couldn't... Did I do something wrong?? I looked around and didn't find anyone with this problem. I am now running RC-29... so where do I go from here =(... I'm regreting doin this -cries-
PROBLEM SOLVED
How did i solve my problem...?
1. When i modded my phone i rooted it normally and installed a version of JF-RC33.. Turns out this version wasn't compatible with the Market and i could not see a bunch of apps that i previously had with no problem.. So i downgraded to RC29 again and re-rooted my phone following This Guide.
2. After i followed that guide i installed CyanogenMod V4.0.4 Witch turned out to be pretty awesome.. And exactly what i was looking for.
3. Fingerlickin asked me to install a recovery but i had no idea.. What this "recovery" would do.. Until he explained a little and its actually something like a windows restore point just for your G1 witch you can get by following this guide and its majorly recommended.. .
Note: I didn't really understand the Recovery guide.. Until Fingerlickin guided me step by step.. (lol) With the installation of CyanogenMod you should have an APP called Terminal Emulator.. Click on it.. And type SU and hit enter. After that it should ask you if you want to allow this and just hit "Allow" When you move on the next screen type flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img and hit enter again. Next hit home and reboot in recovery mode by hitting Home + Power button... and there should be a couple of options different than before and just hit ALT + B or scroll to "nandroid backup". And tada! you created a restore point =)
4. Next i installed the RaDio from This website this "radio" is pretty much the "drivers" for your phone.. .. Anyways after installing the recovery you can install zip files into your phone without renaming them.. So just download that file put it into your SD card and turn your phone off.. Turn it on in recovery mode (home+power) and hit Alt + A or scroll down to "apply any zip from sd" and there you go! got your Radio on and you should be all set =)
So following those steps is how i fixed my problem.. Of course thanks to Fingerlickin for his awesome patience with me lol.. as you can tell. Hopefully someone uses this little guide i put together and if they have the same problem they now have something to turn to for a solution =D. Thanks again to Fingerlickin.
.. OK bye now. *walks out and closes the door*
going back to rc29 removed you root, follow the root process again but instead of installing JF, use cyanogen 4.0.4 (stable) when you're done we can look into what ever problem you are having with the market which I am unclear what that problem is at this point but it doesn't matter.
Sorry to be soo uninformed about this.. But by reroot do you mean download Telnet + Terminal Emulator.. And do that process again? But right now while running Rc29 I have the Wifi tether for root users.. and its working wouldn't that mean that I do have root?.. Just wondering >.<
As long as you keep using RC29 you have root.
You also have an invite on gtalk

Does the One-Click-Root method still work? As I've read mobiles after August, Google had already patched the exploit?

i have heard that google has had the exploit long since patched, but that it is up to the carriers to send out the update. it will mostly be done away with when donut is released.
since he was running a JF ROM he would be able to do the one-click-root, but david and neoblade is right I've heard alot of people with new phones say it doesn't work.
Cyanogen has also patched it in his ROM's.
I didn't realize carriers already sent out the OTA's. Last I heard was that it would be sent along with donut like david mentioned

THANKS!

Thank you, I had a botched 2.2 install and my phone was useless, was getting desperate trying to find this information, my phone is back!!
I cant find that file ' passimg.passion_.zip ' under ROM at Android Technical.

thnx alot just a couple of q's b4 i do this. I had ERE27 build (I believe that it what is was b4) Will it go back to this and 2.1 and the previous build? Will I lose any contacts or anything else by doing this? Will I lose the unlock or rooted part of my phone? Is there anything I should be aware of? thnx again
*problem solved*
im a bit lost, so what are the instructions? Just download and boot to bootloader? Then what?
Nap05 said:
If you havent rootet before and if you have not unlocked the bootloder (like me), you will keep those "settings" and thus keep your warranty.
If you synchronise your contacts & calender with your google account before you do this you will keep your contacts.
I personally recommend to do a factory reset in the android settings, to "clear storage" in the bootloader menu and to format your SD-Card with normal settings before copying the PASSIMG.zip onto your SD-Card to ensure your phone and your SD-Card was "clean" before doing this backwards-update
ERE27 is the official first update for the Nexus One, so to say 2.1-update1. After you have done this restoration you will start with android 2.1, which is the original build you also got when you bought your Nexus One when it came out in January (Codename = ERD79). But you can directly update to 2.1-update1 (=ERE27) and wait until you get the message to update to 2.2 (FroYo).
I recommend to wait for the official launch since the actual FroYo version is not considered to be a final build.
I hope this answers your questions ;-)

what do you do with the passimg.passion_.zip is you are NOT rooted.
Nap05 said:
If your device is already rootet with an custom recovery image and an unlocked bootloader, the following steps are not the right for you if you want to restore your N1:
(1) Do a Factory Reset via Android OS
(2) Reboot into Fastboot, go into Bootloader and click "Cleare Storage"
(3) Reboot your phone, plug it into USB and make Windows access it via USB
(4) delete all files on the SD-Card, format it, and then copy the PASSIMG.zip onto your SD-Card
(5) Shut down your phone and boot it into fastboot again and go into bootloader again. Now the phone will regonize and load your PASSIMG.zip and ask you if you want to update.
Everything that follows this instructions should be self-explaining (press yes to update etc.).

did you go to phone about and see if it has to be updated? what build is it?
I am updated to FRF50 but i want to go back to 2.1 ER79 I think it is called.
I think I need to unlock my bootloader for this to work. i keep getting a missing file error when trying to unlock it though.
After waiting for the official AT&T froyo release with the captivate, I decided to just go ahead and flash a froyo ROM. I've decided to flash the axura ROM first since i heard good things about it.
So while I'm finishing charging my phone before the flashing, is there anything I need to keep note of before flashing so that I can prevent bricking my phone? I've read up on the forums and watched the video from connexion2005 from the post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867153.
Its pretty scary since I'm not much of a tech savy guy and this is my first android phone. Any help and suggestions will be appreciated.

Backup all your apps and data with Titanium Backup. Make sure your battery is fully charged, and removing your sim and SD cards are good practice.
Have fun! You won't go back.
- Backup all your files and make a nandroid backup!
- Get Odin3 One-Click and drivers to get your phone back to stock in case you brick it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
- There may be additional precautions you can take, so read through related threads on xda.

If you've read as much as you claim to have read, then you're probably in good shape. It's really not an unsafe process as long as you have some idea of what you're doing. I was very nervous about it myself the first time, but since then I've probably flashed 20 roms without a problem.
A couple of things that I would tell you, if you aren't already aware:
1. MAKE SURE that BEFORE you flash, you can get into download mode from the phone being off using one of the methods. I'm sure you've seen the one-click flash back to JF6 (stock) that was posted - download that if you haven't. For me, removing the battery, sim, and ext sd, replacing the battery, and holding down both volume buttons while plugging in the USB works really well - just make sure Odin is running before you do that. If you do manage to brick it, you will want to be able to get to download mode and flash back to stock.
2. After moving to a custom rom, it is best to always flash back to stock before flashing a different rom; you can avoid a lot of potential problems this way.
3. After rooting your phone, backup the update.zip in /sdcard/ on your computer. Any time you flash back to stock, you can reinstall CWM really easily by just putting that update.zip back in /sdcard/ and choosing "reinstall packages" from the recovery menu again. Sometimes you may have to do it twice before it enters CWM.
4. OCLF in the market is, to me, the easiest and quickest way to root your phone, but the one click root method isn't much worse. Just a matter of preference, I guess.
Good luck! Come back if you have any problems.
EDIT: apparently two people replied while I was typing my response lol! But what they said is very good as well.
Thank you for all your help. One quick question though, do I need the android ID changer?
the biggest mistake people make is not making sure they have the button combinations to enter recovery or download. (download = hold both volume buttons own and plugging usb cable in; recovery = hold volume buttons down, then holding power until AT&T screen pops up, letting go of power but still holding both volume buttons) if either of these don't work, you must, before doing ANYTHING else, flash the stock odin one click with the button fixes; it is posted somewhere in the development forum. and no you shouldn't need the android id changer unless you want to keep the android id that your phone came with. then open the changer and click save id and flash your rom of choice. most custom roms have a script to automatically load a saved id or randomly generate one if there wasn't a saved one. good luck in all your flashing endeavors!
edit: also as bodaciousdrake mentioned previously about cwm recovery, you should always keep the update.zip that contains cwm recovery on your sd card and you'll never need to change that to something else because using cwm recovery you can flash any .zip file that you want and it does not need to be named update.zip.

What exactly is the point in saving the phone id? Sorry I'm kinda a noobie at this and looking up things about phone id, it seems like it just is an identifier for the phone but doesn't really provide anything.
Also, how do I get out of download mode? I've put it in download mode to make sure it works and it seem I can't get out of it... I've done the 2 volume bottons with the usb cord.
there's another thread in this forum that answers that question perfectly. also to exit download mode you need to pull the battery out.

Basically, a lot of 2.2 Roms come with the same android id, 977blah... If you don't want market issues later I would suggest that you put in your original 2.1 android id. You can always search more if that answer isn't sufficient. And yes, do a battery pull to get out of download mode.
I've master cleared but can't seem to root. Every time I try with the one click root, and I go to recovery, it said it can't find the update.zip from the /sdcard/
yep, just pull the battery. also you don't need to root to flash roms. just grab the update.zip containing clockwordmod recovery from the thread in the development forum, put it on your sd card, boot to recovery and select reinstall pacakges. after that, reboot the phone (you might have to reinstall packages again) then you'll be ib clockwordmod recovery and you'll be able to flash any rom you want without having to change the filename.

For some reason I got this too the first few times I tried to root. I then noticed that in the cmd prompt, for a split second it said failed to push update.zip or something due to privileges.
How I fixed it was ran the one-click root on windows in admin mode. It worked after that.

Ah, but how do you know it's the best one if it's the only one you've used?
Because it has many good reviews. It its the best one in terms of getting the sense 3.0 and gingerbread 2.3. Which is what the new HTC Sensation has. Also it is a shippping release which pretty much means that it is the real deal.
Ok, for reference, what did you do. Already S OFF and rooted. Does the new MOD have better battery performance?
I am on my way to work as of now and will copy and paste what I had done later. I am noticing right now that the battery is not the most optimal. But we will see. I flashed virtuous unity BTW. Sense 3.0 with 2.3 gingerbread

You need to S-OFF your phone (otherwise it wont work) This is the first step:
(1) GoHere...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XshvRmAcgm8 This is an awesome youtube video of how to S-OFF with AlpharevX
** After that you need to install the CWM recovery but first (instead of looking at alpharevX's difficult instruction) Do THIS:
(2) Go here(easy step)
This will give you instructions on downloading a Flasher. What that does is flash certain things onto your device while its plugged in.
**Once you have downloaded that, go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=14693680 (only download the recovery image for Incredible S)
It is the 3rd step I do believe.
When you are done downloading it. Go into the file and grab the file called recovery (image file) and drag it to your "downloads" folder.
**Open up Android Flash 1.8 and plug in your device. Click on Recovery on the left hand side. It will prompt you to a folder (it wants you to open the Recovery image file I told you to place in "downloads") Either way....find that file!!
Click on the file and Android flasher will do the rest.
Im pretty sure it boots your screen for you but if it doesnt
YOU NOW HAVE CLOCKWORKMODE RECOVERY
To see if you successfully downloaded it:
** Power down your phone
**Press and hold the DOWN volume and POWER button
**Move the volume up and down keys to select "RECOVERY" it is second down I do believe
**Press the POWER button to select "Recovery"
**You will now be prompted to a screen witch is CMW recovery.
After that go to the "reboot" option.
(3) To ROOT your phone(last step)
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=14693680
Just follow thier instructions. Its pretty easy!
After that you will want to download this recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1104765 It works the best with the flashing ROMS. If you feel comfortable downloading this recovery first than it is up to you. Like I said I downloaded the clockworkmode recovery first so that I can get the phone rooted via AlphaRev's instructions. Any questions???

So flashing the actual ROM wasn't a problem? I take it you don't have to S OFF the radio in order to flash a new radio with this ROM to get the best out of it?

No flashing the ROM isnt the problem. If you have to get a radio for the ROM than that is apparently the most trickiest part. Please do it with caution and read instructions carefully. You need to S-OFF to get a ROM...and I am pretty sure you need to ROOT to get a rom aswell. Sorry about the links..I have no idea why they are broken. I will try to find them.

Ok, for reference, what did you do. Already S OFF and rooted. Does the new MOD have better battery performance?

Are you running many apps, using auto sync and a live wallpaper? Really like what the stock ROM has to offer including the Sense, just want better battery performance which I suppose every smartphone owner wants in the end

If you like the stock ROM then I suggest Android Revolution HD. It's built from the IS stock release but with bloatware removed, optimised for better battery life and more customisable. Virtuous Unity ROM gets you Sense 3.0, but that comes with higher power demands thanks to all the extra fancy graphics and such.
Oh, and for reference, you don't necessarily need radio S-OFF to flash a new radio, but you do need to do it carefully as you can brick your phone if you don't follow the correct process exactly.
Thanks. I have been undecided on weather or not to flash ARHD. When you say carefully, do you mean following the his flashing procedure step by step, or are you refering to flashing the radio? Obviously want to flash the radio to get the most out of the ROM.
Yeah I mean follow instructions carefully. What I used was ask. Its not too difficult but you have to read. Go and Google sdk. Download it, u are going to have to retrieve your drivers for ur phone. But just follow the instructions on downloading sdk etc... I will put up a link of where I got it from. You just have to follow instructions that's all..and yes the radio is needed if you are upgrading to gingerbread when flashing a new rom.

I've always wanted a Nexus one and bought one, but I can't find software or the original Roms. If anyone could provide helpful links to either or both I'd appreciate it.
I'd like to stay away from Rooting and flashing custom ROMS, but if I'm left with no other alternatives, please make recommendations while trying to keep with as much stock as possible. Thanks.

If you're looking for official ROMs, it seems like Google has taken them off their support page. I haven't been able to find them either.
The most popular custom ROM is CyanogenMod. While the servers of the ROM have been shut down, there is still hope, as the website is archived here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20161224194030/https://www.cyanogenmod.org/
The wiki, likewise, is backed up, and the page for the Nexus One is here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20161224232137/https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Passion_Info
I highly recommend you choose Stable. As the page says, every issue is resolved with that build. You should be taken to a download page; use the topmost one, the one named "cm-7.2.0-passion.zip (87.19 MB)". The build will take a while to download. If the download fails, wait 10 minutes and try again - the Wayback Archive may have other people downloading other files from bygone eras.
After you have done that, look at this page, which will explain the process in detail.
https://web.archive.org/web/20161224201525/https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_passionRead it carefully. Click on the referenced links and read through them to make sure you have a good understanding of the material. The recovery can be downloaded in the "Installing a custom recovery using fastboot" section, in step two. Just click on the link saying "Recovery: Download".
NOTE: It's been a long time since I modified Android in any fashion, so I cannot help you with the fastboot and ADB installation if you are running Windows. I also do not know the exact steps to enable USB debugging for such an old phone.
I hope that all of these resources help you.

I suggest you follow the guide for CyanogenMod I posted. However, if you want to find the stock ROMs...
I found a dump of all Nexus One ROMs, from 2010. Just wanted to put it out there: if your Nexus One was made after 2011, it will not work. You mention that it has 2.1 so it likely was made before 2011. To check your phone's screen type, boot into the bootloader with TRACKBALL + POWER and check your MICROP version:
0b15 is AMOLED
0c15 is SLCD
https://www.mediafire.com/n1passion
If your device is 0b15 - the older model, then by all means flash away. Just download a copy of your existing ROM first! Go to Settings -> About Phone -> scroll to Build Number and transcribe it into a Word Doc. Then find the f8ile with the EXACT same combination of letters and numbers.

I don't have any 2.3.6/Gingerbread update files here, unfortunately.
I've checked the forum for signs of a Gingerbread OTA thread. There are many of these, but the links for the files are all dead.
I believe that if you REALLY want to get Android 2.3.6 on your Nexus One, the best option is CyanogenMod. (unless you made a nandroid/snapshot backup of the Nexus One before installing CyanogenMod or whatever you chose).

I don't think it's meant to be extracted (not really sure).
The thread says to rename the archive to "PASSIMG.ZIP" and place it onto an SD Card. Then put the SD Card into your phone. Afterwards- copy-pasted from the thread:
Power down your phone.
Hold VoLume Up +Power to boot into Recovery. Select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" Select Yes. Then choose Reboot System Now.
Hold down the Volume Down + Power.
A screen should appear showing your phone's system searching for various files. This will take up to 2 minutes.
The phone will ask you if you want to start the update. Press the Volume Up button to start the update.
If you followed these steps correctly - congratulations, you are now on stock 2.3.6 ROM.
I just hope it works...
