Ok, I found a somewhat passable way to get a sideloaded book on the homescreen without root.
If you plug in the NC and go to *:\B&N Downloads\Books you should see if you've downloaded samples or free books (Or I guess actual books for that matter) some files with seemingly random numbers. If you copy over the sideloaded book into this folder, rename it whatever the downloaded sample of that same book is, and delete the downloaded sample what you'll get is the sample still in your library but it actually opens up to whatever is named that random number string!
The first time you open it it might have a new ribbon on it and say fail to open book or something like that but after you close out the error it work just fine. There's two problems, it's going to have the sample ribbon on it and when you open it it'll have the buy now button at the top but that's better than nothing right?
I haven't tried too much to change what the cover is. When I open it up in Calibre it shows what I set the cover as so the NC is not getting that data from the file. If you change the number of the file (Some have v.1, v.2, etc. after the numbers) and try to open the book it'll actually redownload the sample. I'm thinking even if you knew what the actual books file name was it wouldn't work to get the correct cover because instead of updating the cover it's just going to redownload the sample.
If you did this with a free nook book then I don't believe it'll have the buy now button but of course it'll have whatever the free books cover is.
If anyone knows how to get that sample ribbon or the buy now button off it'd be great but if not I think this is a decent way to get sideloaded books on the homescreen (On unrooted NCs of course)
Also, if I explained this poorly just let me know and I'll try to be clearer.
It's not a random number string, it's the book's ISBN.
Have you tried naming the sideloaded books its ISBN number and putting it in the folder with the homescreen ones?

That's an interesting idea. I have a couple epubs that should be identical to the BN edition but DRM-free. Wonder if this will do the trick. I'll give it a try and report back
UPDATE: I tried to do use the ISBN to name the file in the B&N Downloads folder, but they're followed by a -ePub.v*.epub, where * seems to be some number between 1 and 4. And I wasn't quite sure how to go about picking the number. I figured that trying all 1-4 for each book would be a little silly, so I went with the sample thing.
The sample has a numerical string that starts with 294 or 298 instead of 978, and for the two books I tried, the last digit was 1 number bigger than the ISBN. Hope that helps.
Also, do note that if you open it from the sample link, there's gong to be a "Buy Now" link at the top of every page while you're reading, and a "Sample" flag across the front of the book.
ACTUALLY FUNCTIONAL. Thanks to lws803 for OWNER OF ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS + me for instruction edits to make it work. NOTHANKS to KarateExplosion6 for giving NO CREDIT to us and copying thread exactly. His isn't as functional
These instructions work for both CDMA HERO from SPRINT and the HTC DROID ERIS from VERIZON
INSTRUCTIONS
1. FIRST BEFORE ANYTHING make sure you make this path/folder on your sdcard /media/Music and place all your music there or music will NOT sync. Delete Your original music app if running a non-Sense based rom.
1.5. Download the music apk here. -----> http://www.mediafire.com/?j73zh5ld7bpcbqn
2. Open the apk using Root Explorer from your phone or from your computer with winrar
3. Open the lib folder and the 'armeabi-v7a' folder and extract 'libjumper.so' to root of sdcard. If on computer put it to your desktop
4. If you used a computer connect your phone to your computer and copy the 'libjumper.so' and the music.apk file to the root of your sd card
5. Using root explorer, go to your sd card and copy the 'libjumper.so' file and paste it in your phone system/lib
6. rename your honeycomb music apk into 'Music.apk' and make sure its in the root of your sdcard
7. close root explorer and go to terminal emulator(available on Market)
8.then type
su
[enter]
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
[enter]
cp /sdcard/Music.apk /system/app
[enter]
9. Then go to root explorer again and into system>app and long press on Music.apk.
10. select permissions and make sure the check boxes have a inverted (upside down) L shaped pattern
11. close your root explorer and reboot your phone
12. You should see a bown coloured music icon on your phone's app list enjoy!
13. eMaN edit: To initiate sync go to Setting, Accounts & Sync , click on your google account and there will be options you can check and check music
14. Go to your apps and open Jumpertest app(has the music icon) then click on acounts tab, choose your gmail account, next go to the tab that has start peer, stop peer, and import media.
15. (HOW CLOUD WORKS) Ok this is the important step to initiate sync. Once following step 14 on that tab click start peer and wait 5 seconds. Next click import media and wait 5 seconds and the sync should initiate and BOOM there you have it sync may take several hours if you have a lot of music.
Also make sure in the music app u hit menu/library something/ and only stream
Make sure you tell your buddies and pals about this.
Do you know where the music is stored? It be much faster if I could upload my music from my PC.

Yah, had a HELL of a time finding one that worked as well.
http://www.mediafire.com/?j73zh5ld7bpcbqn
It just force closes from the start
Sent from my GSBv1.9 ERIS using XDA App
Mine works like a charm, but any idea what the JumperTest app does? Same icon as Music, but didn't feel like screwing any thing up when I opened it. Safe to uninstall or just hide it?
it works, its alive.....
Alan it is stored in the cloud. Stream music without SD card. It goes to Google servers,
Nick- If it force closes make sure u took the right procedures.
Oh also the jumptest thing I don't really get it but when the music app says no items just go to jumptester and click import media
I've been reading up on this around the forums.
It seems like nothing is actually syncing except for a bunch of filenames(but not the content). In other words, I can setup the sync properly, but nothing is actually being synced except for names of songs. In fact, it will continuously display the sync icon on my phone, but net monitors show that NOTHING is going on
I can successfully delete the music files completely off the SD card and they still show up in music player, but won't actually play.
looks like a bust for now until the service actually goes live
i have the .apk and winrar but theres no option to extract anything
Um yeah.....

That makes sense! (pardon the pun) I didn't want to wait for my phone to sync 10 GB of music files (upgraded to 16GB card).

Really?
So you've successfully
1.synced music from SD card to the cloud (wherever that is, TBD)
2. Deleted the music off your SD Card
3. It still shows up in honeycomb music player
4.Clicking the music will actually stream the music to your device after it buffers.
I got all the way to step four, but the music that supposedly synched gives me the "cannot play media file, unknown type" error
After following the instructions in the OP, I opened jumper test, clicked started peer and import media. After this step, it APPEARED to be syncing (looking at the logs in jumpertest), but that's all it was. Only filenames synced back.
If you have successful actually streaming, please report back and post steps you took that may have been different.

In my windows partition, I can just double click the .apk file, select the unzip/unrar program(in my case it's 7zip) to open up the zipped folder, and pull out the libjumper from there
well....havent gotten it to stream....ill delete a song to test it but i get that "cannot play this file type" at first i thought it did but then i tried it offline and the song still plays....so idk

Just got my wife a Lumia 520 and i noticed it does not have a file manager... is this normal?
I'm used to have file manager on Android so this is quite lame...
Also any idea on how to add musics (MP3/WMA) on the ringtones?
Thks
So... the Internet has these things called "search engines" which you can use to find all manner of cool things. You should really try using one of them.
1: Yes, it's normal that there is no file manager built into WP8. There wasn't one in WP7, either. This is not news. Know what you're buying...
2: There are apps (both on the Store and on this forum) which add very limited file browsing and management capability. However, the OS is extremely restrictive of app permissions - moreso than your typical Android build - so most of the filesystem is unreadable and all but a tiny portion of what's left is read-only.
3: Did you even read the little info sheet that comes with your phone? You would save us all a bunch of time if you did. Connect the phone to your computer using USB. It will appear as an MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) device. You can use this to copy media files (including songs and ringtones) to the phone, as well as copying other media files (such as pictures or video you took) from the phone to the PC. If you're running Windows, it will also offer to install an app to make synching easier. Pretty much every OS has tools for working with MTP devices, including all desktop-oriented Linux distros I've ever tried.
Think of the apps as the file browser. An app that can manipulate a certain file type will show you all of that type of file on your phone. Coming from android you will have to rework your way of using your phone. And SKY DRIVE is your friend. And I'm glad you posted your question because I for one have used and love wp8 although I use my note 2 as my daily. I love people that say search for the answer yet give a long drawn out sarcastic answer anyway.
1.No file browser.
2.Use apps for manipulation of said files
3.Sky drive is your friend. It COULD be said it's wp8s file manager.
4. Have fun!

You can hook your phone to your PC and use the Windows Phone app for desk top, this will let you browse your files as far as music, ringtones, pictures and videos; I'm not sure if it includes documents but it the closest to what you are looking for because system files are off limit like the guys just explained.
What I don't understand is if you can view your files from your PC why can you do the same from the phone? Oh well maybe one day like in an update; this would be cool for browsing for files on your SD card...

Ok so i appreciated the help but i don't really explain well in the OP.
I apologize for the way i wrote the OP, i was frustrated after unsuccessful search for a way to work around the limitations of the OS...
I did not know that the WP7 and 8 did not add an file manager, but the other part i did know :/ so no need to be so sarcastic in your reply (last time a used a Windows based phone it add windows mobile and it did have file explorer much like other OS's).
What i really meant was if anyone knows a way to work around the OS locks on the file system and of course an file explorer that uses it... But after more search i find none
I'm still pretty happy with the lumia 520... just frustrated that i cant add files were i wanted.
Yeah, that exact question has been asked before. People are working on it. Part of the reason I wrote my webserver app was to facilitate deeper exploration of WP8 in the hopes of finding a way to unlock more permissions. So far, no dice. The OS is still young, however.
With that said, from a "what can I do with it" perspective, it's best to think of WP8 as being like iOS: until or unless "jailbroken", everything runs with extremely low permissions.

Ok thanks for the info .
After some research i got the idea that WP8 as worst than iOS in terms of restrictions :/...
Thats really a shame because this Lumia 520 hardware its really nice for the price. It will be awesome wen someone is able to root it.
Still i will keep using Android on my personal phone... (this one was bought for my wife).

So far i can't move files (wma and MP3) to the inner folders on the ringtone folder... and the custom ringtone option does not let me chose other files than the one it came from factory
Not really a big bummer but it just seems a stupid limitation...
"Inner folders"? I just dragged files to Phone\Ringtones and they appeared at the top of the list, under "Custom". I didn't even need to resize them or change the genre, as WP7 required.

Music files should go into the music folder and ringtone files go into the ringtone folder, this is what I did; I put in an SD card and created Folders on it with the same name as the ones on the internal storage and placed all my music and ringtone files there, when you go to ringtones it shows up under custom, if your talking about alert tones for MMS or SMS then you are out of luck other than ringtones the only thing you can change is your alarm tones.
This is a big mistake by MS by not allowing users to use customer tones form email and SMS or MMS their are customers that are actually returning their phones and exchanging them for Android and even iPhones because of this and other limitations. Users have been asking for this since 2011 on MS's very own suggestion page (check it out here) and MS hasn't even responded or given a hit to fixing this issue.
For you guys who know me well and see that I bring this subject up a lot, I apologize but MS needs to wake up and stop trying to restrict even the simplest of tasks.
1. Connect the phone via USB. An MTP device, with the phone's name, will appear (for example, in Windows Explorer).
2. Open the phone device. You will see a "drive" called "Phone". There may be a second volume called "SD card".
3. Open the Phone volume. You will see the following folders: Documents, Music, Pictures, Ringtones, Video.
4. Open the Rintones folder. It should not have any sub-folders.
5. Copy the music you want to use, as MP3 or DRM-free WMA (I think DRM-free AAC/M4A also works), into this folder.
6. On the phone, go to Settings, then Ringtones+Sounds, and tap on the box under Ringtone.
7. Scroll to the top of the list. There will be a header "Custom", under which the music you added to the Ringtones folder will be listed (by title metadata, not file name).
8. Tap the Play icon beside a song if you want to see how it sounds as a ringtone, then tap the song you want to use as your ringtone.
If this doesn't work, be very, very specific about what step looks wrong (i.e. is not as described) and what you see instead. Also, be specific about the kind of music you're trying to use. I have tested using 128Kbps (constant bit rate) stereo 44.1KHz MP3 and WMA files of up to about 4:40 long.

OS is young and the questions you posted, really needs to be solved. MS has put too much restrictions in OS but I think it will open some APIs and remove some restrictions in WP blue update due in early 2014. I only need limited file explorer to manage my personal files, a good Music & Video app(VLC is coming) and a notification center, that's it. All would be well for me to jump the ship from Android.
Btw, try Kirik file browser. It gives you some limited accessibilities on SD card.

I completely agree. MS still as lot to do on this OS... But for people who don't need more computing options its a good choice (i think i like it better than iOS...).
Thx for the tip, i've already try it does help a little.
So far besides the OS limitations my biggest disappointment is the store... there is not enough programs to satisfy my needs :/ But like i stated before i'm happy with the device (actually my wife is lol since its her that uses it).
Switching from Android... hmm no. I don't see myself switch to WP or iOS (btw i have iPod touch 4th gen) for so many reasons, but to start the integration with my Google account and services.
I had a Qtek back in 2k3 (actually was a job phone) and used Windows Mobile (or was it CE?? cant remember) and back then i love it. But the "updated" Windows OS for mobile does not give me the same experience. Android so far is my favorite (gonna give a try to Ubuntu touch since i use Ubuntu at work... lets see how it performs).
The whole thing is that WP8 is designed to protected installed apps _from other installed apps_. Any data an app writes, is completely off limits to any other application. So a file manager would be compeltely pointless. If someone would create one, you could create files and maybe even download files in the folders you created.... but no other app would ever see that data.
this makes programs that can download data (Windows File sharing, FTP clients, etc..) to be played by another program (music player, video player, etc..) impossible.
I do agree though that WP8 needs to create a single 'unmanaged, unprotected data pool' where all apps can write / read, probably organized by folders just so people understand it.
If an app then wants to write data there, it knows it got no protection and is on its own. But if an app wants to write personal data (appointments, messages, contacts, that kinda of thing) it can write it in it's own data store like WP8 is now and the data is protected from every other possible app.
If they will do this for Blue... I don't know. I haven't seen it on a list anywhere yet.
Well, you can ask the OS to open a file (the equivalent of ShellExecute on Win32) and that can be used as a form of inter-app communication and file passing (sending a file from a file browser to the media player is possible, for example). The trick is that it's a blind push; there's no way to ask for the file back, or query what files there are. Also, the other app needs to choose to download the file.
There are Capabilities in the WP8 security policies which could be used to make a decent file browser, at least for the basic stuff (media libraries, documents, a "common area" on the file system, etc.). However, we cannot currently sideload any application which uses them, and I very much doubt MS would let us publish such an app through the store (although it might be worth trying...)

I am fairly certain the current situation will probably change with WP8.1.
if wpdev voice website is an indication of their intentions for wp8.1, things will look very nice soon enough.
9-5-21: Well...there are new SSL issues with all comics in the list that have an "a" designation. All of the "u" comics continue to work and if you exclude "a" selections from your list, the app functions properly. I'm looking at this but so far have come up empty. It's a shame. If I can find a workaround or alternate source for the affected comics (or at least some of them), I'll update the app. Otherwise.... In the meantime, the Washington Post has an Opera Mini-friendly comics page which includes quite a few selections (many on the "a" list): https://washingtonpost.com/entertainment/comics/

A long time ago I posted a simple HTML template to enable viewing a selection of newspaper comic strips from a few sites in your browser. Time marches on and now those sites have mostly left browsers like Opera Mobile in the dust
Today's Comics is a Tasker-created app that allows you to download any of 157 newspaper comic strips at present. It has a simple GUI designed for the NST/G and relies on apps you might already have for ancillary tasks like viewing the comics and editing the list of comics to download. See screenshot below.
How to install
Download the attached zip. Unzip the file and transfer the contents to your Nook SD card. If you already have one of my other Tasker-generated apps or have previously installed GApps, you don't need the two Google maps library files and can delete them. If you do need them, copy the two files into the locations shown below:
/system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml
/system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar
Set permissions for both files to rw-r--r-- and reboot. Without these files resident, the app will not install.
Next, create in the root of your SD card the folder "TodaysComics" (exactly as you see here--this has changed from earlier versions!). Move the comics_list.txt file from the contents of the zip to this folder. This is where your comics will end up.
Install the app by tapping on it in your file manager (wherever you put it).
Download the CURL zip package, unzip and follow the instructions contained inside to install CURL on your device. Reboot after the install.
How to use
The comics_list.txt file lists all of the comics currently available. The file as you get it has every choice "commented out" by a period (.) at the beginning of each line. That means if you select the "Get Comics" option without doing anything else, you will get NO comics! You can edit the file on your NST/G if you have some kind of app that handles txt files. I use the text editor that is part of ES File Explorer [included with the zip]. You can also pull the file, edit the text file on a PC and then put it back on the NST/G. To select a comic for download simply remove the period (.) from the beginning of the line. Don't make any other changes, introduce line breaks, etc. If you designate your chosen editor as the "default" for the action then it will automatically open when you select the "Edit Comics" option in the future. On closing the editor you will return to the Today's Comics screen.
Even if you select only 5 comics, the app must scan the entire list. This actually does not take too long, but if you want to streamline things, you could create your own comics_list.txt file containing only the comics you want (i.e., there would be no lines beginning with a period). Put the original in a safe place or rename it comics_list.bak
Once the list is edited you're ready to download comics!
In the current version you have the option to autoview the comics once the download is complete. You can tap on that box if you like ("x" should appear and will be remembered until you tap again). Then tap on "Get Comics".
You need to be connected to WiFi (in fact, you will be warned about that if you are not). As comics download there is a toast for each one and then finally a completion toast. Basically the system is "locked" until that point. You can actually make the app screen disappear by tapping either "Exit" or the "Back" button, but the collection of comics will continue until done. I do not recommend trying to force an exit. You might be left with a screen artifact that is difficult to get rid of.
Once the download is complete, you will be taken to the viewer of your choice if you have the "autoview" box checked. Otherwise you can select the "View Comics" option. You can also "Exit" and return to view the comics later. The next time you download comics the new ones will overwrite the old ones. You can, of course, use your file explorer to find the comics and view them outside the app menu system. If you are using the app, you will be presented with a variety of choices based on what else you have installed. Again, I happen to like ES File Explorer's Image Viewer but QuickPic also works (and is in the zip file). Some viewers run in full screen and you need a way out so I have added a discreet semi-transparent "back" arrow at the upper left corner of whatever viewer you have (root required to access keyevent). If you need it, it's there. If you don't, ignore it until you're done and then tap it to make it go away. The "Exit" button of the app will also clear the back arrow. Unfortunately the "Gallery" app that is on the NST/G only sees .pngs and only in the /media folder--and doesn't update. I'm sure there are other options. I highly recommend landscape mode, considering the shape of most comic strips.
Can I run this app on other devices?
Maybe. There's no reason why the "innards" would not perform correctly, but the one drawback of Tasker-generated apps is that the GUI is device specific. That means this is designed for an 800x600 screen. On larger screens you'll probably see a floating app, while smaller screens will scrunch things up.
