No Idea Why Nexus One SD Card Damages - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is like the fourth time the stock SD card gets damaged. Does any one know how I can avoid this. I keep losing everything every time... this really sucks. The phone is not even mounting to my pc...

I've fried a few, best bet is to backup every time you plug into your computer.

It might be time to spend the 10 bucks to get a real SD card.

I agree, I had the same problem a few times and after inserting a new reformatted 8gb class 4 I've had now SD problems for 5 months.

Have you tried rebooting the phone? When I first got my N1 and was hosing with it, one boot the SD card didn't mount.. I poked around in the settings for a few minutes, and finally just rebooted it. Been fine since.
However, the suggestions to upgrade the MicroSD are valid, the standard one is a Class 2 IIRC, I'd suggest at least Class 6.

[SOLVED] Apps2SD problem with sd

I had apps2sd by lucidrem running on my phone and it was fine. I was out today and my sd card was 'removed' although I didn't touch it. This ended up bricking my phone, because the sd is removed and there is no data or delvik etc. Is there a method to use apps2sd without it being permanently affected when an sd is removed?
A reinstall of rom has fixed it however I have lost everything off the phone now
Thanks
Tucka
LucidRem's Apps2SD uses symlinks which I believe is now preferred over the one used by MarcusMaximus (forgot what its called ) only way to remove a sdcard safely without screwing up your phone is if the phone is turned off. No idea how the sdcard was 'removed' if you didn't touch it. Happened sometimes to me, but never found out what caused it. Hope this helps.
Best to apply Apps2SD again really or use a ROM that automatically enables it by default if a partition exists (Cyanogen/Dude).
Also a small sidenote... The term "brick" means your device would no longer be functional at all, I.E Unable to turn it on using any method. A more suitable term would probably be "crashed" instead.
I only mention this because the term bricked is being used far too loosely to describe the wrong symptoms.
Sorry for loosing brick loosly, just presumed that was what it was when the phone won't get past the G1 splash. So, say I want to watch a movie or something on a different memory card (won't be able to fit all my stuff on one) all I have to do is switch phone off, remove memory card, insert different one (preferably also with a2sd configured for meridian video?) and that will work?
I think the problem is with movement and sudden knocks that the card comes out. I was running through a storm when it said memory card was removed.
Thanks
No worries about the terms as there are an awful lot of them in the world of technology! Long as we're all learning then we can't argue ^_^
To be honest, hot swapping SD cards is a bit long winded... Its best to save up and invest in a larger memory card if possible (Class 6). Not sure what size your SD card is, but if it can't hold a movie then it could be time to buy a new one.
Also if you use the older Apps2SD program (1.1 I believe) it uses Symlinks as alritewhadeva mentioned and it shouldn't cause your phone to crash totally if the SD card is removed.
Best solution though is to buy a new SD card, you should be able to find one on the cheap on the net.
its an 8gb C4, however I am travelling and will be on a 10 hour flight later this month, and was wanting lots of films and tv shows etc. May just compress and squeeze them onto my 8GB.
Thanks a lot
Tucka
using a2sd and 2 memory cards doesnt work. All your app data and cache is on your sd card and the phone wont be able to boot without the right sd card in the phone (trust me i have tried). I suggest buying a new card maybe 16 gb.
Hope they have a charging point on your flight! It would kill your battery watching a movie for that long haha. Better off with an iPod/MP3 player I reckon.
But yeah, you can either add more compression or reduce the resolution/framerate to fit more on your SD card. Quality will drop but at least it will keep you entertained.
2 batteries plus a portable battery charger ftw
Haha, that should be sufficient then! Very well prepared ^_^ I was thinking about getting one of those wind up backup chargers for emergancy use once... No idea if its any good.
If everything is sorted tuka, could you please edit the title to add "[SOLVED]" so people know? Thanks!

SanDisk16GB Micro SDHC won't read on mac os or android phone. Help!?

This memory card has been used in my Nexus One Android running Froyo. I was using the phone last night (specifically FourSquare) and it froze up, I'm not sure if it was writing something to the micro sd but I removed the battery to restart the phone. When it restarted it said "checking memory card for errors", but after waiting for ten minutes nothing was recognized and I restarted it again, this time removing the sd card. Fast forward a few hours. I tried repeatedly different methods to get the phone to recognize it and finally gave up. I put an older memory card in the phone which worked just fine.
I have a usb micro sd reader and plugged it in to the mac. Usually iPhoto pops up but nothing happened. I ran disk utility to see if the memory card could be recognized and still nothing. I tried many free software programs but they all require the memory card to at least be recognized, which mine is not. Any Ideas? I've ran out of them. I just want a few pictures and a video but if thats not possible at least a way to reformat sd card for future use.
Cliffnotes: Card corrupted by android phone, no longer recognized by phone or mac os, tried several sd recovery programs to no avail, I just want the pics!
Sounds like it's not corrupted, it just died. Sorry dude. Time for a new card.
Had my 8 gig die the other night. Mine is recognized when I put it in my laptop but when ok try to copy any file, it can't access. It does see all of then though. I've been trying some recovery software but haven't had any luck so far.

Thanks. You're probably right. I guess this is where the iPhone has an advantage over us Android users. Permanent on board storage.

So if that storage goes out, you replace the whole phone. Sounds like quite the advantage...
Versus cheap expandable memory. Hmm.....
Ok I found a half satisfying solution. The sd card reader has a lock switch. When I click lock I am able to read everything, thus letting me copy it to my computer. I guess putting it in lock mode makes everything read only. The card is still dead, imo. No way to reformat it in this mode and removing the lock switch only reverts to my prior problem.

That means your card is dead. When a flash card dies, it cannot be written anymore, but it can still be read from because the data is still there, it's flash memory so its nonvolatile. By forcing it to read only mode, you should be able to recover your data, like you just did.
Awesome suggestion on setting to read only. It worked for me too. I'm happy to at least get the stuff off it, even if it's dead.

[Q] Does anyone know why my SD card disappears? (SD not detected)

I got a brand new SGS. It was one of the new models that got replaced from the disfunctional 3 button combo phone that was in canada (i9000m)
The GPS and stuff works perfectly too. So I'm happy.
But I have to reboot my phone like 5-10 times a day because the SD card goes missing (can't use camera etc. says not enough memory)
Anyone know the fix to this ? Why does it disappear ?
I haven't rooted or done anything to it -- it's vanilla right out the box.
Your issue is not new to me. I also had this problem, but the only thing I could do was to pull my sd off and reinserting it, regardless of the uncountable reboots. I got my phone in July and since then it happened about two or three times, but from five to ten times *a day* is way too much.
Try with another sd card (it may be defective). If it's still bugging you, I'm afraid the best option would be to give it back to the shop to send it for warranty repair (or immediately getting a new one, depending on the shop).
Please, let me know how it ends.

First, this thread should not be in the development subforum.
Second, to answer your question, once you connected your phone to the computer, you will not be able to access both your internal and external sd card. My advice is that you go download and rtfm.
Go to the Q&A section, and you will be able to learn more.

[Q] SD Card makes 5830i **** laggy.

Hello everyone,
Today, I just received the dreaded "blank SD or unsupported file system" all of a sudden from the stock Samsung 2GB Micro SD Card. Everything gone, Card Fried.
But then I tried to put in a separate memory card into the phone. It's a Kingston 2GB. But the moment I even put it in, the whole phone freezes into oblivion. Only when I take it out and wait 5 seconds, will the phone run at normal speeds again.
Another issue is that I am unable to format the aforementioned Kingston Card from the phone. When I try to do so, the phone just says Erasing... then it stops. When I try to press the Mount SD card option, phone just freezes, until, of course, I remove the card and wait 5 seconds.
All this suddenly happened today. I have been owning this 5830i for about 2 months now, no problems, and suddenly today...
Any insight into these issue are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
To help give a more visual approach to this problem, I have decided to take some time off to create a video.

Hope this clarifies things.
OMG what is this shenanigans? I just put the KINGSTON card into the phone and waited two hours, and the phone had the cheek to work normally again. Yay its solved, but I still find this issue to be very strange. Fickle phone, I guess.
I just found a solution to the Kingston Card Lag Problem.
Go google Panasonic SD Formatter and Format the SD Card using a card reader. Then put the card back in the phone and the Card will work normally again.
umm umm. lol?

Looks like your sd card is beginning to wear out. Better backup as much as possible and replace it right away. I once had 2 kingston cards with similar issues. Formatting them seems to fix it for a short period of time only. Then eventually the problem returns.
Did you try erasing the card through the phone itself - that is putting it back again after un-mounting from your PC?
