[Q] Is it a radio problem or network problem?

I had CM 6.0 installed and everything was working great until a couple days ago. My phone would periodically have no service and I cannot send texts, make calls or have data. The 3G symbol shows upload and then the H symbol shows upload, but then no download bar. This problem got worse as the time went on. I also had the latest nightly installed but no luck.
I decided to wipe everything and revert back to stock. Everything was flashed back to stock, including recovery, the newest radio, etc. But my phone still doesn't work. When I turn on the phone, it just shows no service or no 3G symbol. However, when I put my roommates AT&T sim card in, it works on edge.
I am on T-Mobile, and it is really frustrating. So right now I have to use my old flip phone.
So is it my radio's problem or sim card?

are you on the 2.2.1 update? I am having the same exact problem. I'm running stock rom, 2.2.1. This started 2 days ago for me. However when i switch my phone to 2G only under settings > network my phone works. I am using the 5.99 tzone are you? I am curious to see if this issue is only for 5.99 tzone 3G leechers or all users of the nexus one. a guy in seattle i spoke to has the same issue. so does my brother who also has the 5.99 tzone.

yea, im on the new 2.2.1 update too. but i have the unlimited data plan.
so i did some more testing with my friends samsung vibrant with my sim card, everything worked great. got like 2mb down.
i used his sim card in my phone, and same problem. it only shows upload and no download. but i was able to send and receive texts and make calls, but no data.

yea something is wrong for sure man just called my buddy and he has unlimited data and 3g is not working at all

internet2.voicestream.com works fine put it in apn in settings

that worked for me, but still only on 2G.
every time im on 3G, its so sporadic. and not reliable at all

is it possible for the radio hardware to die over time?

problem with text and calls after 2.1 upgrade

Have a problem with receiving and sending messages and phone calls since updating to 2.1. SMS are delayed and sometimes I don't get them at all, also calls are not coming through.
Switching phone to "2g only" resolves the issue, but something is broken in 3g mode. I can get to the internet in 2g and 3g mode. My network operator is PlusGSM, I use my phone in Poland.
Config:
Network: PlusGSM (Poland)
Currently installed ROM: Greek 2.1
ROM ver.: GT540-V20a-OCT-05-2010
APN config.: Standard APN config for PlusGSM provided in ROM, 1 APN for internet, and 1 for MMS.
I've tried different 2.1 ROMS (France, CIS, Baltic) and all have the same issue.
Help !

it seems to be a problem with some gt540's and upgrading to 2.1 roms. mine has this exact same issue and so do quite a few other people on the macado forums. my girlfriends phone which is exactly the same phone and bought at the same time doesnt have this problem.
its very strange to be honest. its as if when on 3g it disconnects from the network and doesnt recieve anything. then it must reconnect when you start something like the internet or something and then all the messages come through.
would love to be able to tell you how to fix it but i cant.

Yea i have the same issue with my phone. Im not sure but i think the problem was before the 2.1update. But it seems to have gotten worse after the update though.

I have something like this in 1.6; sometimes calls are not coming through. Also it looses network connectivity totally sporadically. Never had these problems with other phones.
(Sometimes the phone also locks itself up, both of these problems I resolve by removing the battery a few secs, then it's back to its normal self again. Even tried a factory reset to no apparant avail.)

These other issues you are having could be due to a badly manufactured model, or not.
Im beginning to think that the text and calls issue may be an o2 Network problem.
I know 3 other people in my own family with this problem. I am on android 2.1 and using BlackSystem ROM, the second person with this problem in my family is using Baltic 2.1, and the third person is using the stock 1.6 that came with the phone.... and we are all on o2.
Since there is no visable info about the network providers from anyone who already posted here, could you kindly type down your network provider when you leave a reply? Thanks.

Yep a few of us are having this problem, but mine still works now and again. I'm using V20B 2.1 Vodafone Rom.

[Q] Network problems with I9000 bought in Singapore, using in Canada

Hi everyone,
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 (16gb) in Singapore and was using it fine on Singtel's network (signed a contract with them). Now I have moved back to Canada and brought my phone with me assuming that all would be ok to use it with the network here. However I'm having big problems with this one network I just signed up with (Virgin Mobile).
85% of the time I cannot connect to it: voice calls and SMSing won't work nor will the data work on it, the only thing it says is "Emergency calls only". Then at other times everything will seem to connect and work fine - I can make calls and use data.
Virgin Mobile will not support me much because they're thinking it's the phone's problem, if I use the phone they gave me (a lower-end model) it works fine.

If I check out the status, it usually says this:
Network
Unknown (switches to VIRGIN when it does work)

Disconnected (switches to connected when working, and even when it's not working sometimes)
I have Network mode set to auto mode (GSM/WCDMA). I've tried to switch it to GSM only but that didn't seem to change anything.
I'm wondering if there's some kind of configuration settings I still need to do with the phone? I'm also wondering if it is the network I'm with right now? Virgin Mobile isn't one of the bigger telcom companies here and I'm thinking that if I switch to one of the bigger telcoms, will it work better?
Something else to add - before I signed up with Virgin I was using my phone with a pre-paid service (called Chatr) for voice only and it was working fine.
I'm sure this phone can support the GSM frequencies here.. can't it?
I also still have the Singtel customizations on the phone. Will it help if I remove it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can always try flashing a different MODEM (Radio) .. And you might as well upgrade to a 2.2.1 firmware, if not GB.

hmm.. do you know where I can learn how to flash my phone to a different (and more appropriate!) modem? also where to find an update to the firmware?

Just search in these forums. It's all there. You can easily flash a new radio package using ODIN. Better yet, try one of the custom ROMs from the I9000 Android Development section.

[Q] 850mhz band broken on my phone? (''Unable to connect. Try later'' got me crazy):

Hello guys! I've been reading these forums for a long time, amazing what you guys do in here
Here is my problem: I live in México, and I traveled to USA for summer vacation, my mexican mobile phone carrier uses 850mhz (TELCEL) and when I went to USA it was using ATT's network.
So everything was working fine, but when I returned just before I was about to cross the border, it stoped working!
It has a message that says ''Emergency calls only'' where it's supposed to say ''TELCEL GSM'', so no internet, no calls, no messages.
I was using Froyo on my phone, and thought of doing a reset to restore factory settings on the phone, but it did not work :/
Then I updated my phone to Darky's Rom 10.2 (Gingerbread) and it's still not working!
When I go to Settings>Wireless and network>Mobile networks>Network operators I can see that my carrier is available to select, but when I try to, it gives me a ''Unable to connect. Try later'' msg.
It is really frustrating because I depend on my phone so much, mainly because I share my 3G connection to my laptop for school's work and stuff.
There's one weird thing though, I unlocked my phone, and placed a MOVISTAR(1900mhz) SIM card on it, AND IT WORKS!!!
But the thing is that I don't have internet on that SIM card(is prepaid and it's EDGE, not 3G), and on my TELCEL SIM card I have a contract to complete (still a year to go).
When I put my SIM card on someone else's phone, it works like a charm, but if I try to put a TELCEL (850mhz) SIM on my galaxy; just says ''Only emergency calls''
What do you guys think happened to my phone? I would really appreciate your help.

flash a new modem... one that contains more frequencies enabled.. any bell or telus will do.
UGKC1 modem should fix your problem.

you can.. jk4 or jl2 are other modems with 850 and 1900 enabled... maybe your problem is different then I thought... but it sounds like your modem... maybe try unlocking your phone? if you can connect to wifi download sgs unlocker pro (paid app) in the market to unlock, your phone also needs to be rooted. are you using the i9000T? that may be different problem altogether...
edit: sorry I see you said it is unlocked... just doesn't sound like it...
a) modem related (ugkc1) should have fixed that
b) SIM carrier not compatible to phone (unlock phone to fix)
c) Busted SIM card, check in other phone
d) make sure phone option is set to Automatic CDMA/GSM
sounds like you checked everything I would check....
does your 3G work... make sure your VPN is setup to your carrier

maybe imei got blocked...? only way around that is to get provider/samsung to unblock

hello every body
i have this problem with my nexus one when i am connected to 3g service (umts,hsdpa,Etc'). i can't make calls or receive any calls, i can't use the internet (data) or get sms and Etc'. but i have full bars reception. when i check the vi in setting to "use only 2g" the phone work great.
i tried everything downgrade/upgrade roms,radios. i tried to go back to my first backup and even do PASSIMG but nothing help i googled it every where but nothing
please some one can help???
without 3g the smartphone is useless

What network you on? I would at least see how old the sim card is.
Lots of time if you have an older sim card it just can't handle a newer system.

I am connected through Orange IL
and i tried switching sims even with other networks.
and more the phone worked fine at the beginning it just happened i remember i switch to one of CY roms and it happened

yes of course i tried customized roms and stock roms but nothing helped

Its just a guess.
If its a problem on multiple ROMs, its likely to be either hardware or settings. Settings are cheaper and easier to test, and that's the only setting I can think of...?
Of course, doing a full wipe (including system), installing a new ROM, and testing before you restore any apps and settings may be another way to test, but since the apn settings are pre-baked into most ROMs, it wouldn't rule our the apn...?

maybe the nexus have two transceiver one for 2g and one for 3g?

No there are two radios one for 3g and one for 2g because 2g is for calls and 3g for data but when 3G is unavailable the phone will use the 2g for the data.

I have the same trouble, my 3G connection works so bad, but if I use only 2g connection, all works good... I have no idea what happend with my N1. I have a N1 for 3G 850 (AT&T) model.

I have also the same problem. I've tried many different roms and radios. I use 900/2100 3G. What's strang is that 3G works perfectly at home, but when moving to another tower I get emergency calls only warning. 2g works fine.

I just started having 3G issues at home. With 3G on the phone reboots like once an hour, but on 2G I've gone days without a reboot. My 3G signal is not the best at home, but I don't know why that would make the phone reboot. I'm on T-Mo USA.

The one I'm using is only a couple months old, and it works well in my Desire HD, and my Moto Defy. It's only the N1, but I guess maybe it could be that. I'll look into more.

If it's only a few months old, then it may nor be the SIM that is the problem. I suggested it because a number of T-Mo users were having similar problems after a recent network upgrade, and a new SIM seems to fix the issue for most...
