Terminal emulator - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What terminal emulator do you use, or is best to use for the CDMA Hero?
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App

I use "Terminal Emulator" by Jack Palevich. The other one by ZTA Tech of the same name doesn't work on Hero(lack of a physical keyboard I think.). Even long pressing menu to get the keyboard doesn't seem to actually type anything.

I was a huge fan of Better Terminal Emulator Pro until I found SUFBS which replaced both BTEP and Root Explorer for me.
Search the market for SU file manager, it should be the first in the list

I want a terminal manager that can interpret trackball movement the same way an actual terminal interprets arrow keys. Anyone know of any?

Sweet! Thanks for the input!

SUFBS is quute possibly one of tge best apps i have ever used.. I use it every day! the best part about it so far is that you can mount /system and /data to r/w right inside the app

what is the apk filename of pdf viewer and navigation?

what are the names of the apk's of pdf viewer and 'navigation'? the navigation i refer to has the blue arrow and is called 'navigation'.
thank you
there is also a facebook icon in the main menu. how do i delete this facebook? i cant seem to find it in the app list...
I won't be able to get to my computer till tomorrow. I will look it up then if no one else has answered your question.
For Facebook you should be able to delete it from adb and it won't appear when you boot it back up

That would be great if you could get me the names of those or how to delete them. I really appreciate it. I cant seem to find how to delete any of them via adb...i really want them gone, especially facebook.
Thank you!
i have since deleted the pdf viewer...
They are system apps so easiest way is to use adb on computer.. type this in command prompt
adb remount
adb shell
cd /system/app
ls
It will display all apps on the phone other then market downloaded ones. To remove type this.
rm NameOfApp.apk
Im guessing you can figure what app is what now. They are simply labeled. And remember, its caps sensitive.

This I know. Thanks.
I dont see the names of the apps I want to remove.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I believe the Facebook apk is located in system/app (maybe wrong though I can't remember where I deleted mine from)
I think there was htcfacebook.apk and com.facebook.katana.apk
The Google nav has been elusive so far but from what I am seeing it looks to be included in the Google maps app. I can't find a specific file to get rid of it. If anyone else could verify that it would much appreciated.

PDFViewer.apk = PDF viewer
Are you sure you want to remove the blue arrow one? That's google maps navigation... sorry, I don't know that one.
BTW someone made a great post of a list of almost all stock HTC apks which I keep bookmarked for reference:

Thank you.
I do use google maps for nav. I just want the 'blue arrowed' navigator off the main menu.

I didnt see it in the list when i typed ls. Im running stock rooted. When i go to the market, facebook is listed 'installed' and will only allow me to uninstall updates. Some things dont work when i run fresh2.1.2. Some things dont show in the market, updates dont work although i didnt push odadm. Suggestions?
Hows the evo? I was ready to buy one today...couldnt find it. Wouldve been impulse anyway...

If you remove the Navigator apk I'm pretty sure you won't be able to use the google navigator turn by turn directions-style navigation. Google maps will work, but not navigation. I don't think you can remove just the icon from the apps drawer if that's what you mean.
One way I uninstall apps if I don't want to use adb is to install titanium backup and uninstall from there. Just go to the backup/restore tab, tap on the app and it should give you the option to uninstall.hope this helps!

[Q] Stop Applications from automatically starting?

Is there any way i could stop applications from starting automatically or just uninstall them. like amazon mp3 is always on, some other things just turn on automatically that i really dont use. the task manager kills them, but they start up again. can i remove them atleast.? im using cm6 rc3 with a locked bootloader . and the one click root. thanks for any help
get a file manager like root explorer and go into /system/apps/ and delete amazonmp3.apk or however its called.
DO NOT just delete something.. you rather ask before you delete anything else than amazon
thanks i have astro file manager. would that do the job? i ll post all the apps i want to get rid of so u guys can check if its ok
Remove system apps and never use the auto-kill feature of the task killer, unless you want extra drain on your battery.
So I'm not suppose to use the advanced task killer widget,? Bc that's wat I use. Also which application can I use to delete these systwm apps bc wen I try to with astro it says failed. Is there an aplication better than astro that does the ?

Astro doesn't have root permissions, so it won't delete system apps.
You need EStrongs Explorer (free) and enable the root option, or Root Explorer (paid), or some other file manager that can use root privileges.
Unless you have a VERY good reason to kill an app, you shouldn't kill it. It doesn't help anything.
so how can i stop the app, lets say for example i turn on google earth or something, and there is no exit button so when u turn it off it stays on , how can i stop it with out killing the app. thanks for your help btw
just tried uninstalling amazon and deleting the .apk and it doesnt allow me. the root permission sis enabled also what could be the the problem, im using e strongs file explorer

the app doesnt really stay on. take google maps for example. open it up, and see your gps icon turn on. press home button, gps icon turns off, maps goes into idle mode and uses absolutely zero resources, which can be verified using system panel monitoring function. its been proven many times at this point.
all google apps are coded correctly to not drain or do any thing when you send them to the background. same with all stock apps. if you really want to see for yourself why and how this happens, the best app to use is system panel. its free, but the cpu breakdown part is now paid. best app i've bought by far (and root explorer too)
Ok thanks for the info, I see why now not to kill the apps. But I still can't get the amazon mp3 to be deleted and also twitter I want off but it doesnt let me and root permissions were allowed

You need to remount system partition as writeable.
Execute from Terminal Emulator:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock6 /system
Click to collapse
Or if you have ADB:
adb remount
Click to collapse
Or if you have Root Explorer - press "Mount as R/W" button above the file list.
Or if you have EStrongs Explorer - find the setting in the menu for mounting system as R/W and enable it.
Thank you it worked, you are a hero. Finally got that stupid app off

Alternative Keyboard Success

I was able to successfully install and use Smart Keyboard Pro. The lack of a keyboard settings program was a real problem. I was able to copy the apk to the sdcard and then using root explorer I copied it to /system/app and then ran it from that directory and installed it. I next used the Keyboard Manager program from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830177 to select which keyboard for portrait and which for landscape. I have not yet figured out where to put the downloaded dictionary. It is much preferable to the NC keyboard IMHO. Time to try some other keyboards.
Edit - I was able to copy over the dictionary file and adb installed it without a problem.
Hopefully this will work with other keyboards.
There are two problems involved:
1. You can't enable an IME, because such setting is lacking
2. You can't switch IME, because long tapping a field doesn't give you any popup
Putting the keyboard into /system/app makes it automatically trusted (1) and enabled.
With the keyboard manager you can then fix (2).
However, I believe the same thing can be achieved by editing settings.db (the one where you also enable non market apps) manually. I'm not sure if there's an easy way to edit this with a (root permissioned) app though.
Anyway, good work!! I'll try your method with SwiftKey and some Japanese keyboard later.
UPDATE: I couldn't get it to work... KeyboardManager kept on nagging about a missing permission (WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS or something like that).
Try changing the permissions of the file in /system/app to allow all groups and users full access. That worked for me. I am typing this on Better Keyboard right now.
It was my fault... I hadn't read the KeyboardManager instructions. I had installed it as a normal app. Now that I placed it in /system/app as well it "worked".
Well, SwiftKey worked perfectly fine, but I couldn't get OpenWnn plus (adaption of the standard Japanese IME of Android) to work. It does show me the keyboard but as soon as I press a key it disappears.
I can't get either of the keyboards to show up in keyboard manager... I've tried swiftkey and smart keyboard pro both.
I am currently using better keyboard which is my favorite. Try rebooting a couple of times as that seemed to help me along with changing permissions.

How did you get it working? I tried downloading SwiftKey from the market, but it isn't showing up in Keyboard manager... did you install it on an android phone, configure it, then pull the apk over to the nook?
I just got Ultra Keyboard installed using this method. If your not familiar with it Ultra is very customizable and has what they call "tracing" which is just like swype! I had to change the permissions to get it to work I checked all of the boxes which probably isn't required but I don't know much about permissions.
Where is the apk for smart keyboard pro. I downloaded it from the market but cant find it.

Should be in data/app It probably will have a weird name but the little symbol should be a keyboard
It worked. Something happened and I had no keyboard at all. I opened the keyboard manager and there were no keyboards listed. I sort of freaked out a little lol. I restarted and smart keyboard pro was listed. So I felt a lot better and all I can say is the iphone keyboard looks awesome.
How would one get the english dictionary working for smart keyboard? I can do adb commands just not sure what to do. I downloaded the english dictionary when it prompted me to but thats all I have done. I have the sdk working on a windows 7 machine if that helps also.

Thought someone said you had to adb install to install it.
Nevermind I got it
I installed SwiftKey from the market, adb su'ed, mv'ed it to /system/app and rebooted, used the NookTools to enable it. It's working great.
Caveat: Looks like some of the text in the configuration is missing or it's grey-on-grey and can't read it.. So I read someone suggesting setting it up beside your phone so you can see what the options are. Basically anywhere there's a list of settings with radio buttons or checkboxes, no text. But the settings, and keyboard itself is all fine.
Don't bother to launch it from the launcher, it just gets stuck trying to turn itself on, just go through the Nook Tools and do it, and once you enable it, use the Config button on the keyboard to enter the configuration.
I'll be posting in their forums about this to see what they can do.
No matter what I do I can't get Smart Keyboard installed
Can someone PLEASE post exact steps how to install the apk ?
I have it installed but can't see it in keyboard manager
Thanks
I bought it from the market and installed it. Then I copied the apk file from /data/app to /system/app. Then I made sure the permissions were rw-r--r--. Then I rebooted and went into the Nook Color Tools and selected the default keyboard to smart keyboard pro
Thanks for the prompt reply
I'll try that - if I figure out how to set permissions

Remount /system, copy the apk to system, chmod 644 the com.whatever.file.apk, reboot.

[Q] Keyboards?

Anyone Have any luck getting a replacement keyboard to work. I have tried Slideit, Swype, Swiftkey. All of them crash regardless. I can set them up, its just once there ready to go it crashes. Then i have to go back to using the default keyboard. I even tried using the old Nooktools for the original kindle, can't seem to get anything to work. Anybody have any luck?

I finnally did this, but what sucks is that in landscape mode the keyboard doesn't fit the screen properly. But in portrait mode the keyboard works amazingly. Guess I will fiddle with some other keyboards till I find one that works if there are any. They really did not want keyboards to work.
Bump.
So ive noticed that keyboards do work. in both portrait and landscape, but the landscape only works correctly with the lock screen password. This is due to the home key bar, it covers over part of it. Anyone have a way around this or a fix? possibly settings change to the keyboard apps. Not sure how to work this.

got the same prob with the crashing app. which *.so file is it I need to move for using swiftkey?
You need to install SwiftKey normally. Use root explorer go to data/app. I then find SwiftKey and move it to system/app. I then go to data/data find the com.touchtypeSwiftKey go to this folder. Then /lib and right click move the file in lib folder. I move it to system/lib. Restart device then it should work. But be careful

just wonna leave a step by step instruction in case someone else got the same prob.
install Keyswift tablet (not sure if it works from the Playstore because I sideloaded it) - hit done after installing
use root explorer (or any other file manager with root access) to move the com.touchtype.swiftkey.tablet.full.apk from data/app to system/app
use root explorer (or any other file manager with root access) and navigate to data/date/com.touchtype.swiftkey.full/lib and move the libswiftkeysdk-java-internal.so (it should be the only file in that folder) to system/lib
reboot
open swiftkey and change the preferences the way you like
Your welcome. If you figure out how to fix landscape mode please let me know

I have the same problem in fact I installed 4 kind of keyboards Go keyboard, SwiftKey 3 tablet, Thump keyboard and Multi keyboard with the same result when the lanscape position some keys hide behind home key bar.
How do you do it to make it work perfectly with the lock screen password I tried but it did not seem to work maybe you can show me a way before some expert here can make a tool to hide the home key bar.
TIA

Navbar targets?

When swiping up from the home button I have google now and the "what's new" app. Is there a way to customize these targets? I would really like to remove what's new and add Google Authenticator as well as a link to the dialer.

If you don't have adb set up you can install any terminal emulator and run the pm command from there. My mistake. Seems you do need to use adb. Detailed instructions here:
