How to investigate crashes? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My CDMA Hero started rebooting randomly during the last week or so. I uninstalled all recently installed applications and the problem went away.
However ...
This has happened more than once, and it takes a lot of time to track down the offending app(s). I really want to know how to troubleshoot if this happens again.
If this were a Windows computer, I would go and get the minidump file and run it through windbg and it would suggest what module had caused the fault.
Is there anything like that for Hero crash / unexpected reboot? If not, what approach would you suggest for investigating these incidents?
Thanks,
Chris
Running DamageControl 2.08.1

Best thing i know to do is to run logcat with adb and try to recreate the problem.

Hard to repro...
Thanks, but the problem was so sporadic ... it would go hours, or even days, between reboots. Is it possible to use something like logcat to get the log files from *before* the current bootup?

im not that familiar with logcat, just search the string "Logcat Hero" on the Xda forums and you should be pointed in the right direction

Is there anything like /var/log/messages?
Thanks again. I went and looked at the logcat documentation and there are some options to get different kinds of output. However, I reset the phone (simulating a crash) and when that happened, the logs were cleared, so that there were no log entries visible via logcat that predated the shutdown.
Does anybody know where the actual log files are kept? There isn't a /var/log/messages or anything like that. Where do I find files equivalent to the "normal" Linux /var/log/messages?
Thanks,
Chris

Message program does not appear need help

I'm starting to have issues with my messaging program a lot lately and thought I can see if anyone has some sort of insight for this.
My Tilt is unlocked and my service is T-mobile. This problem occurred a few days ago and now I can't seem to open the program to check my email or even my text message (since its integrated together). I do not even get any alerts for this which is another huge problem. Would anyone know what could cause this issue? If it would be any help when I select the message program I notice its busy working but it does not open the program. Please, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
I had the same problem Twice. Do you have any mods on your phone or are you running the stock rom? In any case the only remedy I found was a hard reset. Good luck to you maybe you can find another route.
First off I AM Mr. Jimmy... Not you.. lol.
Now, soft reset if you haven't. Then pull your battery for 30 seconds and reinsert. If that does not work go into your File Browser go into your Windows directory find tmail.exe open it and see if it will open. If not time to hard reset. If yes delete your email settings and readd them and see... try a new shortcut if it works through windows.
Well time to bring this back from the dead. Since I continue to have problems not to mention I can't even access my SMS at all now.
dantegl36 - no mods at all I am running the updated ROM version thats out.
JimmyMcGee - Yes you may be the Mr.Jimmy but I have the name to back it up LOL Any case I've done what you've mentioned and yet I still have the same problem. Even a hard reset I tend to run into this issue at least once a month which is pretty lame.
Would anyone recommend if I just back up all my stuff including rom, radio, etc and just have the phone work off a home brew version instead?
I'll make sure i'm on top of this thread more. Thanks

No Reminder Popups

I hope someone can help me with this before I go stark, raving mad.
I tried to search for this problem but it's hard to know just what to search for. I don't think this is Raphael specific but was unable to find a general software forum.
When an alarm or reminder goes off on my Fuze, I don't (usually) get the normal popup dialog. To get it, I need to tap on two tiny icons, which is a major pain. I've been fighting this for months. I've tried a hard reset followed by installing my software a programs one at a time with an alarm test after each install. I've tried restoring several old backups. I've still been unsuccessful in tracking it down.
After a hard reset, it works like it's supposed to, but as I continue to install software and use the device, it eventually stops working.
Can anyone give me a hint as to where I might be able to begin looking?
Thank you in advance!
Not a single reply. :-( Am I really the only person who has experienced this?
I've been fighting with this problem for literally months. I just recently went through several hard resets and restores, trying to find some specific application or condition that causes the problem. It started happening again a couple of days ago, and I'm absolutely sure that this time I had not installed any new applications. The only change from the time that reminders were working properly to the time that they stopped working was that I had downloaded some applications data (email, etc.).
If anybody has any ideas at all, I will be forever indebted.
Thanks,
Keith
I have the same problem, I think. I will go into my settings and tell it to give me pop ups for new SMS, MMS, notifications/reminders, and then they stop happening and I go back into settings and have to recheck the boxes. I'm not sure what's causing them to quit though. I just flashed a cooked ROM to my phone, but I don't like it so I'm trying to find something new. The problem was on the factory ROM that came with my phone.
I have the same issue, im using the ROMeOS 6.5 ROM and i dont get notification too...
gonna try and fiddle around the advanced config app

random reboots - can't find out why to save my life

So I have Cyan 5.0.6. I have trackball pro installed, no theme, and I've tried 3 kernels and wiped everytime. I've also started from scratch and did a full wipe of everything, wiped and formatted my sdcard, installed 5.0.6, and I still can't figure out these reboots. Can anyone at all take the time to check this log and see what might be causing it? I can reproduce it in time but it's different each occurance. One time i might open the widget dialog. Another when putting in the car dock.
I ran a logcat and caught it on a reboot at the very end. Any help and ideas is VERY greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

By any chance do you have a live wallpaper? I narrowed down my resets to the Nexus Live Wallpaper and it was only occurring if I tapped an empty spot on the screen by accident.
Nope no live wallpaper. Thanks for the thought though.
didn't notice any reboot in that log. (dont know how the lines are all joined into one insanely long line)
try getting the kernel messages:
adb shell cat /proc/kmsg

UID Mismatches...? Among others

Alright, I've been using Fresh Toast for about two weeks now and love every second of it..The phone is incredibly responsive and everything I could want in a Hero. But I've run into a few problems/questions.
1. What does the option "Fix apk UID mismatches" option do in recovery? I've searched and it seems the only explanation is "it does just that" but I don't know what that is or means..
2. More often I've noticed I've had the mobile network not responding and had to toggle the option off/on for things like internet to work, but after the toggle it works just fine. It hasn't really started to be annoying till recently. Is this a problem in 2.1? Or Fresh Toast?
3. Possibly in conjunction, my phone has restarted 3 times by itself today..just sitting on the table. What could be the reason for this? I haven't installed or changed anything for at least a week, and it just started happening. It can get to be annoying because it takes a few minutes to boot up and a little inconvenient..
From what I understand, the apps and stuff have ID's which the phone can confuse sometimes, causing force closes of stuff you think should work. Fixing the mismatches helps with the force close problem some have. This is based off of knowledge I have gained from using th search button, but I am not rude enough to tell you to do a search when I am already typng you a message.
The random rebooting sounds like a problem you might want to take to sprint...
and I personally have been having some issues with mobile network using regawMOD lately... I am not blaming it on the ROM, jsut letting you know that I am using a different 2.1 ROM than you... mobile network locks up, doesn't respond and I have to toggle airplane mode to make it work, or it's just murderously slow compared to other times, andall while in the same location: my computer.
the random rebooting may be your phone unable to handle high frequencies... use overclock widget, and bring it down a notch to 710 or 691, and try that. The uid mismatches, I think, is a linux thing... the uid of a file is its permissions, aka read, write, execute, etc., but don't ask me how they get messed up and need that (you root your phone through adb? remember typing chmod 755 blah blah? the chmod command changes uid's, and the 755 is telling it what permissions to give it, but I don't remember the breakdown of the number, still learning linux myself)

Please Help, Apps Crashing

Hi:
I have installed the JH7 update found here on xda. My phone is rooted with sideloading enabled. I will be honest, I have a ton of apps on my phone.
I have had SO many problems since the update. I had to re-install the update 3 times, because after HOURS of trying to enable sideloading it still wouldn't work. After the third install I was finally able to enable sideloading.
Now, my problem is, some apps are crashing as soon as I open them. The 2 biggest culprits are e-mail, and Shop Saavy. I click to open them, they open for between 1-5 seconds, then close.
Any thoughts? I am desperately trying to find an answer, I would hate to have to hard reset, since I have already spent in excess of 10 hours trying to get my phone to where it is now.
I did have task manager installed, but the problem persists even after uninstall. Also, I used task manager prior to the update with no problems.
Thanks so much!
PS: If I do have to hard reset, can I simply use Sprite backup to restore everything, or will there still be some things that need configuring (ie. home screen etc)?
Quick idea: Download ROM Manager from the Market and run "Fix Permissions." Sometimes that will clear up any force close issues.

Hi:
I tried your suggestion, but sadly, it didn't work
Thanks so much for your suggestion though!!
PS: The apps just close, I do not get an error message. I have found some posts with people with e-mail crashing issues, but it seems that they do get a force close message, and that it is Exchange related. I do not use exchange.
Now that you mention it, I have had the stock email client force close upon load a few times since the update, and it had never done that beforehand. Maybe try reflashing just the kernel?

Hi:
Sorry to be a dunce, but how do you reflash just the kernel, and will it delete everything (apps, data etc)?
Thanks so much!
My 2 cents:
I don't know why it took hours to enable sideloading, i spent only a few minutes - but that gives me the impression that something might seriously be broken.
I would back up everything you want to save and do a master reset - it will clear all data, but you hould be JH7 fresh. If you want to go further, you can reflash factory JF6 then update to JH7. Either way, make sure you check basic apps first before installing a bunch of stuff.
I don't subscribe to the blind grasping at straws method of fixing things. After to many hours it is just faster to rebuild. If you knew what was wrong, then fix it, but if you don't then rebuild.
I agree. If you are needing this to function properly now, then just reset back to factory and start over. But if you are like me and just have to know what is broken.....that could take a while. I always try to make sure I don't have anything on my phone I couldn't live without just for instances like this.
Flashing just the kernel can be done with Odin (search the forum). There is a "stock captivate kernel" floating around (I'd post it, but I'm sure we don't need files posted multiple times). Instructions are included in that post. Basically you need a computer, USB cable, drivers, and bollocks. However, as mentioned, this is a shot in the dark. Random force closes could be caused by a variety of issues ranging from corrupt software, file system inconsistencies, to hardware failure, phase of the moon, appetite level, etc....
The safest bet is to backup everything, flash stock (if needed) and take it back to AT&T for a replacement.
Good Luck!
Hi:
Thank you so much for the replies, and help.
I decided to go ahead and reflash JH7. This has fixed the entire problem. So, apparently it was software related.
I am now going to install all my apps one at a time, in order to find the culprit. Hopefully it is one I can live without lol.
Anyway, thanks again!
Did you ever figure out what app was causing this? I am starting to get annoyed with my force closes and was going to re-flash and re-add all apps.
Hi:
Well, I MAY have figured it out. I had a million programs installed, and it just seemed like too much work to try to figure it out.
So I just re-installed JH7, and started from scratch, so I'll never really know what the problem was.
However recently I started having the same problem again. Since I started from scratch I have been gradually installing programs, just in case one cased a problem.
Well, it seems my problem was Startup Manager. I did NOT disable any system programs etc..., but it was still causing apps to crash, as soon as I froze it with Titanium Backup Manager, the problem stopped.
So, if you happen to be using Startup Manager, I would try uninstalling/ disabling it. Or, if you use a task manager, try not using it, maybe it is stopping whatever Startup Manager was disabling on mine.
Anyway, I hope this was of some help.
Oops, sorry, the program causing my troubles is actually called Startup Auditor.
