market app upgrade - G1 Apps and Games

does anyone know how/where i can upgrade the market app in a rom im using? i lie the 2.0/2.1 market but right now its stuck on the 1.5/1.6 version, help?

Do you mean the Google Market, Vending.apk? Just pull it out of some ROM that has the Donut/Eclair market and do an adb push, though since you're running an Eclair ROM, you really already should have it..

oh, no, im running a hero rom, im not very good at updating my sig ^_^;
but thanks for the heads up

Well if it's a Cupcake Hero, you may be stuck. But Eclair Heros do have the new market. If you're running a 1.5 ROM, I suggest making a bart backup, then in adb or terminal, set the system as rw, delete Vending.apk, and replace it with a Vending.apk from an Eclair Hero rom. Then if it doesn't work, just restore.

Froyo Launcher2.apk

Hi all,
I personally really like the default Launcher2.apk from froyo, however unfortunately Cyanogen has now only included ADW.Launcher in cm6. After upgrading to cm6-rc1, I'm having trouble locating a copy of a Launcher2.apk from froyo.
As my phone's bootloader is not unlocked, it'll be a large hassle for me to go back to stock, and upgrade just to get Launcher2.apk...
I was wondering whether someone could post their stock /system/app/Launcher2.apk from an FRF91 install, to save me the trouble.
If you have adb installed, the command should just be:
adb pull /system/bin/Launcher2.apk
Cheers, Xanium
remote object '/system/bin/Launcher2.apk' does not exist
Just pull it from a stock rom and push it back overwriting ADW.
Mine had trouble seeing it. I tried a version I compiled myself from AOSP, as well as a resigned one from a deodexed FRF91 rom without success. I'm sure I missed something. I don't know what though. I've replaced the launcher in older CM versions with my own modified one without issues.
If you download CM6 from ROM manager you can choose to install with ADWLauncher or Launcher2
Launcher2.apk and Launcher2.odex are located at system/app. not at system/bin

Really? Awesome. I guess I'll have to try that.
Here is a stock AOSP build of Launcher2.apk.
EDIT: Rom Manager didn't allow me to select launcher. The file I linked to above worked fine though. Just reboot and it will default to Launcher2. The ADWLauncher entry in the Settings app will disappear as well.
I made an update.zip (for hdpi-devices) to make replacing the launcher easy for future upgrades. It just adds Launcher2.apk and removes ADWLauncher.apk.
Launcher2 just keeps FC on my G1. I'm using CM6-RC1.
I installed like:
adb .\Launcher2.apk /system/app/Launcher2.apk
adb reboot
Phone boots but launcher just keeps crashing. Do I have to do some kind of wipe to get this to work? Does anyone have Launcher2 working on CM6-RC1?
EDIT: Perhaps I need to uninstall the old ADW launcher? I rm'd it from /system/app but another post suggested using pm unsinstall com.android.launcher. I haven't tried that.

You need Launcher2 built from AOSP for mdpi. The one in my post is for hdpi. I forgot to mention that.
I get an error in Amon-Ra Recovery when trying to flash your zip file (nexus one, CMod RC2/nightly), Blunden.
Code:
E: can't open /sdcard/replace-launcher-signed.zip (bad)
Any ideas? I tried the manual uninstall of ADW and installation of Launcher2.apk but Launcher2.apk says it won't install.
Never mind. I downloaded your AOSP-compiled version of launcher.apk and it worked without a hitch. I must have had a corrupted file when I tried to install before. Thanks for posting the files!
no you cant

Seems that mediafire refuse the request?!
Thanks!
Download Super manager from the market not astro or anything and put the Launcher.apk on your SCcard and then open super manager tap on the red square with the sdcard on it and u will see Launcher with the Launcher icon, tap it and press install and your good
hope this helped

Stock 2.1 Apps working on Vibrant

Hey, not sure if this really belongs here, or in General, but since its semi-hacking the system, I'll post here first.
It seems, so far, that Touchwiz isn't nearly as deeply integrated as Sense is, and that at least some of Samsung's Modified Apps can just be backed-up, deleted, and replaced with the stock apps from Android 2.1 (using apps ripped from CM5.0.8 for Nexus 1 for my attempts.)
So, I thought I'd start a list of stock Android 2.1 apps that people have made work on the vibrant. I know a lot of people are waiting for CM or other custom roms and alternate recovery images, but in the mean time, lets start customizing!
I have confirmed the following to work, but only after the original touchwiz apps are deleted from /system/app, then the stock apps are installed via the standard installer to /data/app and cp over to /system/app then reboot
Music.apk
DeskClock.apk
Calendar.apk
CalendarProvider.apk
GenieWidget.apk
Mms.apk (NEW! added 7/21/2010)
Another pleasant surprise, is that I now have the default Calendar, music, and news & weather widgets on my vibrant!
Again, adb push didn't work for anything since I can't remount with r/w access yet, but a su adb shell allowed me to busybox cp them to /sytem/app once they were installed.
I've tried the same method with the CM5.0.8 LiveWallpapers with no success, so maybe someone else has some suggestions?
My next step is to test out bringing the original phone.apk and contacts.apk/contactsprovider.apk over
7/21/2010
Got the default messaging app from CM 5.0.8 brought over, still having tons of trouble with the default dialer and contacts/contacts provider, samsung has buried their signature for these deep in android somewhere, even outside of /data/system/packages.xml so any attempt to install the CM versions even after removing the Touchwiz apps fail.
7/22/2010
Pushed ADW Launcher to system, works like a charm! However, removing the TouchWiz30Launcher apk/odex and replacing with adw or launcher pro generates constant FC's for me, so sadly, it looks like it has to stay installed for now.
cheers everyone!
where did you get the N1 files? I have been meaning to try this as well.

I actually installed the News & Weather app yesterday by just putting it on the SD Card and using ASTRO to install.. nothing special for that app.

I was about to say the same thing, I just did an ADB install for this, didn't need to delete anything from data/app or anything.
It's cool to hear that the other stuff works though.

The Gapps for 2.1, same CM Nexus thread.
Here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623496
Sorry for the confusion about 'news and weather' I just meant I was unable to adb push the apk directly to system. It installs fine by default to /data/app but I wanted it in /system/app to survive resets, hence the busybox cp.
So far no luck with contacts/contactsprovider =(
Every version I try give me an install failed error, regardless of removing all traces of the samsung versions, even their references in /data/system/packages.xml

I'm honestly not sure how to tell if it is.
I pulled the Music.apk straight out of the /system/app dir from the CM 5.0.8 update for the Nexus 1.

can anyone provide News and Weather widget from stock OS. I think its the best news app.
Grab the 'Google Apps' addon for CM 5.0.8 for the nexus one, unzip it, and copy 'GenieWidget.apk' to your phone to install it.

Hi again.
I haven't tried deleting the touchwiz launcher yet, but I'm using launcherPro Plus (and playing with ADW too, I really like that ADW supports the touchwiz horizontal style 'paging' in the app drawer, and hope launcher pro eventually supports it too) and they both work quite well, and should work fine when pushed into /system/app too.
Will update if I'm brave enough to remove the TW launcher, probably not tonight though, just spent the last 3 hours trying to get the stock dialer & contacts, and it was an epic fail, samsung has buried the touchwiz dialer/contacts signature deep, so no matter what I try, I always get an Install_failed_update_incompatible error when pushing the stock apps to the phone.
This is the same error I first received with the calendar, but a simple settings->applications->manage applications 'uninstall' of the remaining TWCalendar and Provider, and a reboot cleared that error, sadly that's not the case with dialer and contacts.
Maybe a wipe would fix this, but I'll wait another day or so to see how the clockwork custom recovery pans out, plus I need to make sure nandroid works so I can backup before I try that.
It also might be linked to something buried in the TW framework, I don't know, but I'm so not brave enough to mess with frameworks yet.
cheers everyone
Root Explorer allows your mount and unmount system drives btw. I like using it over ADB bc I can do it on the bus or train while commuting.
If I want to install the Stock 2.1 Calendar App, do I need to install the Calendar provider apk as well? I know the answer seems obvious but I just want to check

Market 1713

It may be because of my service provider (Cox) but my current market version is 1712. By searching Google, I've downloaded the Vending.apk version 1713 and tried installing it from my sd card and I get the message "Application not installed". So I figured "Hey, there might be some kind of issue, I'll uninstall the current Market," so I did so with TitaniumBackup (Nandroid first), which completely fudged it to hell as well as giving me the same error "Application not installed". So I restored from the nandroid and am back on the 1712 version.
My question is, is the 1713 update Sprint specific? Or am I doing something wrong?
PS: The apk I was using is below.

I'm not sure what the differences are, but have you tried 'pushing' the app to /system/app/ ? I know that some apps aren't able to be installed by clicking on them (within the gui), but that some have to be manually added to the /system/app/ directory via adb.
Code:
adb push c:\Whereitslocated\Vending.apk /system/app/
Maybe that'll help ya out?
Always nandroid first just in case
I'll definitely give that a try...when I can. I turned off my phone to do a nandroid first and now it wont boot into recovery or normally. I can get to the fastboot screen but not into recovery. It just goes to the white screen with HTC in green....
what recovery 'were' you using? (which isn't currently working as you can see, lol)... you may need to flash a newer version of whatever recovery u'r using. u can do so via fastboot using instructions from XDA.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1
I was using Darchstar's "Unofficial Amon_RA 1.7" recovery and it was working fine for over a month. Ill have to reflash it when I get home I guess.

Nook Color 1.2 Rooted

I restored to stock and update my nook color to 1.2.0. YAY flash works! This will properly root using nooter 0.2 This of course only enables adb so if you have to manually install all the programs you want. One downside if you like the stock launcher(user interface) is the installed programs do not show in the new 'apps' menu. Also, make sure you install nook color tools from the auto-nooter. Debuging does not stay on after you reboot and the program will enable you to do so. Also, you will need another launcher such as ADW to access your programs.
I have a rooted Nook Color with stock 1.1 Rom and clockworkmod recovery installed.
Will the new update be pushed to me automatically, or do I have to manually install it.
If I have to do it manually do I do it per the instructions on B&N website or some other way using clockworkmod recover?
I believe you have to do it manually. I read that you can do it with CWR. The person who did it said it froze or something on the first boot but a reboot fixed it. Search '[ROM 1.2] nook color' on xda for instructions thread.
I was wondering, once auto-rooters are released, will you still be able to use the apps you got from B&N? There are one or two I'd buy, but want to make sure I can still root and use them. Thanks!

i'd assume they'd be tied into your b&n account - similar to your books - you can redownload any of your books that you purchased previously.
edit: btw, thanks OP for the heads up on nooter 0.2 - i'm back to where i was at with autonooter and root with 1.1 (minus gapps, which i haven't played with yet)... a lot more tedious doing things manually. running adw launcher pro as my launcher.
good job thx!!
cannot feel more wonderful.

Although the apps from the nook market seem to be modified to be recognized by the nook interface, I still have the library and shop apps in my zeam menu. I don't think there will be a problem using and apps from the nook market on any rooted nook.
@everyone
Amazon market works, but I had to install the angry birds apk using adb. I read there are problems installing apk's bigger than 4M. I suspect this may have something do to with that issue.
I don't have market working yet but it looks like someone did it with a specific market version and nookie-froyo-gapps. It also looks like auto-nooter will be out soon. I will be doing manual because I'm very anal about not having unnecessary software on my devices.
Edit: Market is working if but it appears large programs still do not install. Here is a guide:
download nookie-froyo-gapps-20110207.zip (use google) & unzip
download Vending.apk & Talk.apk from this post http:// forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051235&page=11
Code:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblock0p5 /system
adb push nookie-froyo-gapps-20110207/system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk /system/app
adb push nookie-froyo-gapps-20110207/system/etc/permissions/features.xml /system/etc/permissions
adb push Vending.apk /system/app
adb push Talk.apk /system/app

[APP] Android 2.3.3 (GB) Email App

Just in case any of you are like me and prefer the 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) Email app better than the 3.0.0.1 (Honeycomb) Email app, I thought I would share the APK.
Some ROMs have the Honeycomb email app installed by default, and for me it does not play nice when you are not in a good data area or on WiFi.
Warning, this is intended for 2.3+ ROMs, not Froyo...
I installed it by following this process:
1. Use Titanium Backup to uninstall the Email app
2. Use Root Explorer to move the attached Email.apk into the /system/app folder in R/W mode
3. Reboot
4. Goto Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Email to clear all app data
5. Setup your email account settings, and viola!
Someone else may have a better method. If so, speak up.
Hope this helps...
Email.apk is stock 2.3.3
Email.2.apk is what is delivered with CM7 as of 9/20/11
Just tried it...but doesn't seem to show up...now I have no email...rebooted and everything. I'm running GR-12.
When you copied it to system/app did you make sure you had the folder set to r/w?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Yeah...just realized I wasn't in r/w mode so it never actually copied...I'm a little slow sometimes...rebooting now...
That did it! But...I was actually doing an experiment...while it didn't solve my issue, it made me think harder on what to try next and I figured it out so thank you!!!!
Just installed this, and finally my push notification started to work fine again! It had weird behavior on SGS II email apk. Thanks again!

Awesome, guys!
Glad I could help.
I used adb to take the existing file, push it to /system/app/
Then mounted as rw
changed group to root (was showing sdcard)
chmod to 755
mv -p back to sdcard
remounted as ro
Then went to root explorer
mount as rw
ran Email.apk (ran as an installer)
when prompted I selected DONE (open will give FC)
mount as ro
Went to Titanium backup, where Email now showed in backup history. Clicked to install (Only choice was data only).
opened terminal emulator
su
sync
reboot
email now works
I may have done some un-needed steps, but that is what worked for me.
I made the stupid mistake of moving the original Email.apk to my SD card with a mv command and borked the ownership and group ownership, as well as the permissions of the file.
So far all is working great, and email push works just great!
Thanks!
JT
How can you tell what version is installed?
Edit: Got it.
I did your steps, with root explorer and titanium backup pro. I rebooted and everything worked. I go to enter my email and pass and it says force close? Any help?

Froyo uses a different framework. Custom apps like this can't be ported across rom versions.
