After waiting outside the Best Buy in blistering cold weather, I finally got my hands on Google Nexus S. This is my first Android phone and i am pretty excited about it.
Well, I wanted to see what some of your favorite apps were so i can get some exposure since i am kind of new to it.
Thanks.
launcherpro.
the dark colors (of 2.3) + launcherpro (for simple home screens) = perfection on stock andriod.
All of them all at once.
Wireless Sync FTW, started downloading all my apps after activation!
Freaking love Android, if this was an iphone i woulda needed itunes
Mine didn't restore :/.
Either way, quake3droid!

So know my old HD2 sleeping on the shelf
First AppMonster + Titanium Backup.
Then AppBrain, KeePassDroid, Handcent SMS, AdFree, ClockSync, Tasker and Barcode Scanner.
Possibly LauncherPro, I don't know yet. I haven't tried the stock launcher yet, but LauncherPro is certainly miles ahead of TouchWiz on my current phone

AndExplorer then LauncherPro.
In that order only because LauncherPro wasn't showing on the marketplace for me for some reason, so I had to download the apk off his website.
Hi
I've been having a look at the firmware files released by NI to fix the update blunder they had.
From a quick overview the following nice things appear to be true:
* NI is using test-keys to sign everything which means there's no security really
* /xbin/su is present. I'm not sure if this means you can just adb shell and type /xbin/su to get root (since I don't have an adam yet)
* The boot image is standard format. It appears you can just unpack/repack with secure set to off (making sure that offsets etc are correct!)
Based on this, rooting this thing should be piece of cake..Just repack boot.img and flash..Getting a custom recovery probably requires a bit more to make sure the LCD/PQI actually works in recovery?
Great work so far Rayman. I posted over on this thread in an attempt to get some Adam users to come over to XDA and lend their tablets. http://www.notioninkhacks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=227&p=2406#p2406
It would be nice if we could minimize the duplication of efforts and get this thing rooted and unlocked.
Agreed. Thanks rayman. The gtablet folks are already messing with Eden and the Adam Rom, I can't wait until some more people get their Adams and hacking starts. I'm not so sure that notion ink's idea of what we would like in a Rom is actually right. I will be checking the xda dev section often.

Did you see the Eden Plus thread by Rothnic? Looks like he's got it rooted and the stock Google Apps added.
My own observations (and I could be totaly off base)
I have yet to hear of a successful update.zip, so I'm wondering if their recovery is borked, right now.
Look at their LCD.zip. It's an nvflash format, and yet there's still some remnants of an update.zip, namely the command file. My guess (and it's only a guess) is that they were initially going to create the fix using recovery, and then switched over to nvflash later.
Has anyone managed to get an update.zip working, yet? Man, I wish I had an Adam just to punch this through and get it fixed - I hate sitting on the sidelines like this.
I have my adam, got it yesterday, and would be willing to test for devs. I have rooted it and have the market and adw on it now. I have decent knowledge of android, using adb, recovery, flashing roms and mods.

Sorry to be off topic but. Here is the question: those of u who own a Adam, is all it was cracked up to be or just like a Gtab by veiwsonic, that might have Ben rushed into production? I'm not looking for fanboy type of answers but good, well informed, educated answers.

I believe it is a great tablet. All the apps and games run great on it. The resolution is amazing. The Eden ui is a little glitchy but adw runs amazingly fast. I haven't had any issues with it yet and I am a long time android user

Sounds promising as I am waiting for mine to ship. I heard Eden is very beta quality. I would actually prefer it wasn't there at all. Looking forward to the Honeycomb update. All the new honeycomb tablets coming out at $800+ certainly makes the Adam look like a steal once it gets Honeycomb.
Does anyone use LauncherPro as a Stage UI replacement (on Froyo 2.2.2)?
Or can anyone help with replacing Stage UI - I'm rooted but I don't really want to install an entire new ROM just to change the launcher?
TIA

You have quite a few options out there, LauncherPro being one of them. All you need is a home replacement app. I'm currently running Zeam. It's smooth, free, and very configurable. I have it set for 6x6 rows x columns, and it scales perfectly for the Streak 7. It doesn't have a lot of frills, but I don't like frills so it's great! (I prefer to just install 1000 widgets of my choosing.)
Market Link
There's also LauncherPro, ADW Launcher, Regina (only works in portrait mode, though), etc. Lots and lots of options, out there; none of which require root.
Ah, Thanks But...
I've used Zeam on my rooted Nook Color - unfortunately, the link (or rather the market) will not let me install Zeam on my Streak. IDK why - How did you get it installed? I do have the Zeam 2.95 apk - is that the version that you use?

Yes, that's the version I use. I gave the market link for the in-browser market; just search for "zeam" in the Market app on your Streak and you'll find it. I installed it from the Market app on my Streak 7.
Using launcher pro mainly because I already paid for it for other devices.

It should be easy; when I installed it, the first time I launched it the system asked if I wanted it to be used as the shell. There was a checkbox for always use, and that was all there was to do.

It might be because he's replying to a year old thread, zeam likely fixed compability with HC a long time ago.

Actually I was replying to a 3 day old post by rvbarton - who is obviously still having problems getting Zeam on his Streak. I just finished installing it on mine 10 minutes before replying to his post...
Oh whoops, i misred the date on his first post, thought it said jan 2011 and not jan 2012.
Checked it on market and it's not compatable with my S7 on HC either, are you still on 2.2 RCounts? That might be why
Though the screenshots show it works on ICS, perhaps they simply dont support tabs,
(in the eyes of the market, S7 with HC = tablet, S& with froyo = sorta-phone)
Yeah, I'm still on Froyo. I just got mine and its a t-mobile. So far all I've done is unlock it , and at this point I'm not confident enough to try the HC upgrade...
if you update you wont be able to auto update zeam afterwards as its not compatible with HC, but I doubt it'll auto uninstall it

Not sure that I will bother with the update to HC. Zeam got rid of that horrible Stage UI for me, and that was one of the main advantages to HC IMO. Is HC even worth the trouble? Especially now that the Stage UI is dead, and there are so many more apps that are compatible with Froyo that aren't with HC (Zeam being one example)?
I know you are really knowledgable about HC since you wrote the udate guide. If I inderstand it correctly, in order to install HC on my t-mobile, I first have to install a recovery.img file for a non-t-mobile 4G, THEN the update.pkg for HC, and if I skip the restore.img step the update will fail with a FOTA mismatch. Is that correct?
Yea and yea on the update part. Someone on 2.2 must use the recs provided on the 506/7 update page, they cant boot a stock 5xx/3.2 recovery because of the changes in 5xx
There arnt many people that actively choose to remain on 2.2, but everyone's allowed their own opinion.
Mine is that the s7 wasnt worth buying until HC, and incidentally I just happened to get mine days after official HC. Going to update to ICS and try and break stuff now.
I've had the S5 and I can more or less guess what the S7 would feel like without HC and I know I wouldnt have liked it. But just as much I dont have any apps that only work on 2.x and not hc, so I dont have to worry about that.

My biggest concern is with the potential to brick it. I'm especially uncertain about the first part of the process - setting up the fastboot and installing the non t-mobile recovery.img. Is there any way to make it a recovery.pkg or otherwise put it on the device itself so that it will install from the SD card like the update.pkg file?
What are the other benefits of HC? What makes it so much better than Froyo? Is the battery life that much better? If its really worthwhile I might be persuaded to do the update...
I would say to make a nvflash and you'll always have something to restore to, but you cant really make a simple guide out of it, you pretty much MUST learn how to use it to correctly use it.
The biggest difference is the UI, HC is designed around 120 dpi (which the S7 uses) and makes much better use of the space allotted.
HC native apps do not even use the menu button and long pressing stuff is rather rare. It's nearly night and day UI/UX wise.
Even the little things like the new notification tray is completely different from the tray in 2.x (or 4.0 using the phone UI)
The S5 @120 dpi nowhere near compares as 2.2/2.3 are not very efficient with their space, there's plenty of room for a lot more buttons, but you're still forced to access everything from the menu button or long press stuff.
Battery wise, I believe it's slightly better then 3xx/2.2, but it's still not amazing.
It's not a perfect upgrade, as you've seen with zeam and the like, but for me it's benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.
The majority of apps are still not HC/ICS native either, but once more ICS devices roll out they'll automatically be able to take advantage of the tab UI much better. (Anything with ICS and supports tabs automatically also support HC)
I'm debating switching over just to try it, just want to have a better idea if people like 4.2 or not. Thanks.

Nah, I quite like the dual notif box's, one for quick settings etc.
But hate how it keeps scrolling down, off screen etc.
Also, MY NEXUS IS SO SLOW AND LAGGY NOW, FEELS LIKE THERES 100GB of data on a 16GB tablet its that rudy slow.

I think it's a good update.
My favorite new feature is definitely the keyboard
S'ok
Like = Gesture Typing, new settings drop down - Epic!
Not Sure = WIDI - This could be cool as no MHL on my Nexus 7 but not tried yet and possibly expensive
Don't Like = New lockscreen - Just looks nasty and feels slow and pointless
Love it! It the best Android experience yet! IMO

If I don't go away this weekend I will have a chance to install it. I almost did it yesterday but was so tired. I definitely want to try it though. I know I'll miss AOKP.
The only thing I like is the gesture typing. My nexus 7 has seemed much slower since the update and I hate the dual drop down menus.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Swipe typing is really nice, animations on the app switcher look pretty cool. But does feel a touch sluggish on general use. Plus Bluetooth audio is screwed up, audio keeps stuttering really badly. Notifications seems half a step backward to me, but not something I'm overly bothered about
It's ok besides these issues that are really getting me frustrated. Can't get old pics to show in Gallery, even though they are there and are in the same file location that pics taken with 4.2 are. Pics taken on 4.2 show in Gallery show in Gallery...? Can't find the newest TWRP backup in file explorer, but it shows in TWRP. Total opposite for old backups.....they show in file explorer, but not in TWRP?
Oh...the USB-debugging hidden thing had me mad at first, but now think it was kinda funny.
It is a SMALL update, very small.
I don't care about the keyboard, since I don't use dictionary (not possible with slavic languages, and I use TWO).
I don;t particulary like new notifications/settings pulldown. It is ugly and extends over the edge f the screen, even if empty.
I don't like new lock screen. I prefer to have weather icon on it than stupid widgets which might provide private data before UNLOCK
I have a feeling it is slower, only slightly, though, than 4.1.2
Several apps don't work, including my favorite TSF Shell
"Blink to logon" is a good idea, but I have glasses and it doesn't work very well for me
So, all in all, a HUGE FAIL.
Thanx god it is a small update, who knows what Google would manage to f*ck up in MAJOR update....
My only issue is that the quick settings notification area aren't actual toggles as opposed to shortcuts to settings. But overall happy.

4.2 is just preparing us for 5.0 and you could tell in the new clock app.I think they are going to change the color scheme to red. The camera icon is also different and in 5.0 there will be more changes. For now we are basically beta testers of an early build of 5.0
4.2 is very smooth though
4.2 seems to work pretty well. Smooth and relatively trouble free so far.
Went all the way back to stock/unrooted/locked
Updated ota to 4.1.2
Flashed 4.2
Unlocked/rooted applied 720p video patch
All is smooth

So, a friend of mine is upgrading to a new phone and said that she was literally going to run over her DROID 3 with her car because she hated it so much. I convinced her to instead let me give her $10 for it so I could play around with it.
I'm not really new to Android, I have an ATRIX HD and a Nexus 7 both on Jelly Bean. But I've never used any of the android versions before ICS, so I'm a noob in that regard.
Anyway, I'm looking for some cool stuff I could do with it. I won't be using it as a phone, more of as a toy. I've heard somewhere that you can convert old smartphones into security cameras and stuff like that. Doing that would be great because it would let me keep an eye on my dog while I'm at work.
I plan on doing a factory reset as soon as she gives it to me, but I'm open to ideas about what to do after that. I figured I would flash CM or maybe a different ROM.
Please, give me some ideas on what I could do with it! Thanks guys.
Use it of course!! the keyboard is awesome.

Its not a bad phone for free. Basically the stock Motoblur GB ROM is terrible due and it doesn't have much free RAM. If you plan on using the camera flash a stock 2.3.4 based ROM, I'd recommend Minimoto, although stock rooted would probably work fine. It has a good camera 8MP/1080p so it should work great as a remote webcam device.
I'm thinking of using mine like those Android HDMI sticks when I retire it so I can stream Netflix, Youtube, etc from it on my TV.
It makes a good PMP if you ask me. Also the keyboard is good for tweeting and such, (but most of those things call for 3g) but its still a neat little device, could use it as a media player as well.
The Droid 3 is by far the BEST QWERTY out there! it deserves better treatment! I recently bought a brand new one (manufactured in August 2012) and they even changed the hardware a bit! The gap between display and keyboard in the bottom left corner is gone, and the pulling area of the battery door moved from the middle to the edge for better getting off the battery door. Also they used an other display obviously because there are no more vertical stripes visible when the display is turned off.
