Why Yellow? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just wondering if anyone knows how to change the default color scheme on a stock android Nexus One 2.1? You know how yellowish orange is used for everything, loading bars, selecting options and many other things. Is there anyway to select a different color for this job?

No, you can't select a colour because they're all images. About the best you can do is replace them all. Most (all?) of them are in framework-res.apk.

and to replace those, you have to unlock =|

You'd also have to dig into your launcher and replace colors there. Its really not hard to do, I modded my framework-res.apk with files from a desire rom, then adb pushed them to where they needed to be. The launcher, whichever one you use, will have to be resigned, though.

It looks like nothing has been selected because the check doesn't show up but it works, just a compatibility issue with cupcake i guess

Ok thanks. That was the problem. It looked to me that none of it was selected. so i didnt know if it was chosen or not.
I am working on a Cupcake compatible UI refresh. Unfortunately, Cupcake mangled the CheckedTextView that I am using for all of my lists. Rewriting and including custom color scheme support. Should only be a few days. But yes, it should still work, if you can get around the non-visibility of the selection indicator (checkmark).

Nice! Glad to hear that, It's not a major deal, i've gotten used to it so I can hold out for a bit
Just out of curiosity, how much control over colors do y'all want.
I can give very fine-grained control if you need it, otherwise I can do a basic background/foreground selection. Do you want to be able to set active tab/inactive tab, text / other foreground, etc... or something like was done for fummod (I think) in the other thread?
i like having my colors match my themes, which is why i like chompsms and the color selector they have. if it is too much work though, just like 3 or 4 basic colors i guess. i can live with the current color scheme also, i am easily pleased
Well, I'll certainly let you pick any color you want it's just a matter of how much control over specific UI Elements you want. Want buttons one color, tabs another, text black on buttons but white on tabs. that sort of stuff. If there was some sort of "theme editor" like the XML theme definitions in apps that would be slick for a lot of purposes... I'll check out ChompSMS to see what they are doing there.
one color scheme for everything would be fine for me. just make the tabs the same color as search results and just make the background for the search results match text in the tabs, just flipping the colors.....if that makes sense, just basic would be fine by me. i just like having some form of control over it, even if it is just the text i can change thats cool also, the black background doesn't bother me so much.

changing stock backgrounds and colors?

O.K. I've seen in different themes or roms that the backgrounds are different than stock. Evil eris the robot on the dialer screen was blue. I've seen em pink. Seen em with checkerboard pattern across his midsection. Never seen a completely custom without the robot tho. My question is how do you change that screen and is the robot not removable? Can I just put some random picture that I think is cool at the time? Oh and how do I change the color of the call button and battery icon, if theres a way without installing other apps to do it. I want to open the xml file, edit it and push it back.
They are just .png files and you can change them to whatever you want. Trick is to locate them. The one on the dialer you are talking about is located in the phone.apk in drawable-hdpi called phone_default_icon.png you can just make a new one and replace it. They need to be the same size as the original... that one is 480x618 but most icons are 72x72.

Replacing turquoise with green?

I would like to replace the turquoise colour of active checkboxes with something else, like green. I find it hard to distinguish enabled from disabled checkboxes because it looks almost identical to me. The green coloured checkboxes that are used on most other Android devices is much easier to recognize, at least for me.
I assume that this is something that must be changed in framework-res.apk. Is this as easy as editing one byte in that file, and if yes, which one?
I know that there is a theme that has green checkboxes, but it's not for stock ROM, and for now I would like to stick on stock ROM.
Any help would be highly appretiated.

They're .png images in framework-res.apk. Swap them out to your heart's content, backup first and be careful.

[Q] Change the blue text color in menus

I like the phone, but I dont like the blue color in all the menus. Is there an easy way to change this? I use launcher pro. If I pick another theme, will this change those colors? My phone is not rooted (and I would not like to root it )
Thanks in advance!

[Q] Help needed: How to change highlighting color in SMS application

Hello,
I would like to change color of highlighting numbers in SMS messages but I'm lost and not able to find a right place where to change it. I looked at framework-res.apk and also com.htc.resources.apk but no luck. See attached image, if not clear what I was talking about. Does anybody know where I can change such color, please?
Thanks for any help.
I am asking a similar question about theming and how to change the selected / highlighted "text color" when "cutting and pasting", searching or selecting a link in my browser.
Specifically for Sense ROMS 2.1 or 3.0 with GB 2.3.3 or 2.3.4. The T-Mobile HTC MyTouch theme called "Safari" has everything blue for the text selections and highlights, and want to have this same feature on a standard HTC ROM. Not a green color fan.
Looking for what *.xml file controls this in the framework files?
Is this XML in the
com.htc.resources.apk
framework-res.apk
files?
Again, trying to do the same thing, to learn which xml file controls this.
TIA

Those color codes will be in the messaging apk not the the framework or the resources. HTC has many color codes over writting each other. I would start in the messaging app.
These color codes are MOSTLY in the framework files, otherwise when you change skins they would always be the same green. This is not the case. Try it yourself with a different skin other the the HTC default.

I know about themes more then you think. I don't use the stock SMS app so not so sure about that one but before you say I should try it have a look at the SS. I know my way around the framework enough to change everything.
