Just rooted, need some basic help - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

okay I just rooted on 2.1 sprint RUU
wifi tether is working!
but now I'm searching for two things
1- How the heck do I make a nandroid backup and how do I use it to restore my phone?
2- Whats the fastest and preferred rom around here(and info on how to install and uninstall)?
Thanks

well since you rooted the 2.1 then you must know about adb. You can run adb reboot recovery or if your phone is off then turn it on while holding the home button.
In recovery there is a bunch of options and you can do stuff like backup and load other ROMs. As for what ROMs. Do a backup and then start trying stuff out. You always have that backup to go back to if you don't like it or screw things up. The only screw up you won't be able to recover from is if you flash a GSM ROM. There is a GSM and a CDMA verision of the hero so be careful where you download things from.

reboot into recovery (hold the home button and press power), then in the menu's is nand backup, click on it then pick a backup , click it then press the home key to verify thats what you want to do. Thats it.
It will place the backup on your sd card under nandroid

Thanks to both, making the backup right now
now another thing is finding a rom, which is the best?
Thanks

Search the Development page before you get flamed, my friend. You're not going to get a definitive answer as to which ROM is the "best". And, since every phone is not the same, not all ROMs will perform the same. Your best bet is to read through each developer's ROM summary, try which ones appeal to you, and Nandroid about 2 or 3 of your favorites.

Won't tell what the "best" is, but personally I really like Fresh 2.1.2 or the newest Aloysius ROMs.

I heard around here alot of good things about freshhh so I guess I'll sink to that until something froyo like comes around

RegawMOD 2.1 is the best!!........ jk
I'm gonna it update sometime here soon

I'm sold on yours XD

I'm along the same but still haven't done root yet (still on .5) and still looking and reading stuff. My question is does the 2.1 root flashes the phone back to 1.5 and I will lose all my settings?

never mind, just found the answer.

Well you can always either use the Sprint 1.56 RUU, or just switch to a different ROM, or just make a nandroid backup now.

If you make a nandroid backup now, there should be no problems, as long as you're not experiencing problems now.
A complete list of Hero ROMs can be found in the sticky at the top of the page.

Nothing.
Chances are one of the ROM Devs will incorporate that update into the next ROM they put out. Most of the time, the Devs here work faster then Sprint/HTC

questions about rooting captivate

i have been thinking abour rooting my phone for awhile but i have a couple of questions.
1. is there any prep i need to do before i root.
2. will i loose anything if i root.
3. do i need to save my stuff on the computer like pics contacts videos etc.
4. what will happen with my apps settings and all.
5. how do i choose which rom to choose and how do i tell the difference between them.
i think thats all for now thanks in adavance
I had these same questions just three days ago. I was able to root my device with one of the guides here on the forums. Rooting is pretty straight forward and for this portion you wont have to do anything crazy except backing up pictures and essential files should you mess something up.
As for roms, I used the cognition 2.3b8 that can be found on these forums. That and because you can install it using rom manager. Good luck and read the guide. Also check youtube.
Pretty straight forward since they have the one click root/indoors for our phones...google one click root for captivate or on here and if u need more help you tube it up...good luck
1) No
2) No
3) No
4) Nothing
5) Nobody can really answer this for you. Check out the different ROM threads and decide which one you'd like the most. I can tell you that I've used most posted here and my favorite, though highly modified by me, is Assonance. For installing a new ROM then numbers 3 and 4 will change to yes and unless you don't mind losing it, don't expect anything will be saved, but back things up beforehand. Always.
Before loading a ROM download and get used to "Titanium Backup" and "Rom Manager".
Just download z4root ..search the forums..its an EASY app that let's you root your phone from the phone...just run the app and click root ...it will reboot and that's it

ok last question i think. i have launcher pro plus and ive changed my icons to how i like them will i need to redo everything after i root and install a rom or will it stay the same and just change the internal stuff?
and z4root wont let me do it cause it says my phone blocks apps not in the market place.
I'd run the one found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739304
Very simple to root your phone doing it this way. And worse comes to worse you could just copy the update.zip into your SDCard and run it under your recovery menu on your phone.
You will not lose your setting or icons in launcher pro by rooting.
Please explain your comment on z4 root. What are you doing that gets you to that comment.

Does rooting do anything to the market ID? I basically want to root so I can eliminate the pre-loaded bloat, install non-Market apps, and do full backups. Will this interfere with getting any AT$T updates, especially Froyo when it eventually is released?

device Id will probably change, but all you have to do is while on the stock rom download android id changer from market and save your stock device id. Then after rom is flashed install android id changer and load your id and change it back to the original.
You will likely have to be at stock in order to use at&t ota updates.

Like I said, I only want to gain access to other apps and controls. I do NOT want to flash a custom ROM. Does rooting alone change the Market ID or is that only a consequence of ROM flashing? Also, all the instructions direct you to put the phone into USB debugging mode, b ut they don't say whether to turn this off when done rooting. Is that done automatically?
No rooting does not effect your id. Rooting is easy and safe. It is what you do after youroot that can get sticky
I give you a week or two tops, then you will be asking what is the best custom rom

[Q] Problems Making and Answering Calls

I've searched for half and hour and looked through XDA's suggested topics before, so I apologize if this is a beaten dead horse.
I've had a problem for a while, I believe when my phone (CDMA HTC Hero) was stock, then through Fresh, CM6 and now CM7 2.3.3. at least 50% of the time I try to answer an incoming call it immediately "boops" at me and hangs up. Additionally, at least 50% of the time I have to send/dial a number more than once for it to connect. It will ring, click off a few seconds and "boop", hang up. Often the person on the other end will tell me their's rang once but when they picked up I wasn't there.
Now adding to this oddness, unless I go through a tunnel I almost never drop a call once it's active. Adding more wierdness, I found out my sister who also has a CDMA HTC Hero (rooted so I could add wireless tether but otherwise still on Sprint's 2.1 stock) experiences the same sort of conditions.
Is there something I can solve here or is it just an anomaly I continue to live with for another couple months till I upgrade? Thanks to this forum and the developers I've managed to remain happy w/ my phone for 2 years because I get to make it "new to me" every couple months (more and more often, it's addictive) but I feel it's showing it's age and I'm ready to upgrade.
Thanks, Travis
have you updated your PRL and such recently?? sometimes that causes phone answering wonkiness..
I often say I know just enough to be dangerous
.....a search tells me the PRL is my phone's list of local towers?...... I haven't intentionally done this ever. Do I need to somehow flash back to a stock ROM (avail. in here?) and then restore my current after I "update PRL" or has 2.3.3 added this feature and I'm just missing it.
Thank you for the help, sorry for current ignorance

I'll happily do this 3.142 times if it corrects this minor irritation

[Q] I can only send a text message to 10 people max at one, why?

Check this thread here

I believe this could be a limitation of the ROM or the service you are using. Search the developer forum for a ROM that gets past this limit and check with your phone service provider (I read somewhere that Verizon has this limit, but can't vouch for that as I am in different country)
thanks, but I am new to this whole android world, this is my first android coming from a nokia n900.
I have been reading, but it seems I need to root my phone which is now difficult because as soon as I received the phone i updated it and now have the kernel LA6 instead of original LA4 which is more difficult to root.
As for the thread you provided matius44, does the .apk file only work with ics roms or can one install it with just a rooted GB rom.
----
Just so I can be sure, I do want to root, but I'm slightly confused, is it correct in saying that I need to downgrade the fw and kernel to an older stock rootable rom then root the phone? or is this wrong?

That used to be the case, but there is now an easier way which flashing pre rooted ROMs directly and you're good to go, here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
As for the .apk mod, I never tried myself honestly but there are versions for GB and for ICS, any .apk with ZCLP in it's name is for ICS you don't need that, take the other ones
I've tried dr. ketan's way and it didnt work for me, maybe i didnt know what I was doing,
Ill try these pre rooted roms, I just basically flash them to the phone, does all my data in my phone get wiped off clean? if so, what do i use to make a backup.
btw sorry for all these questions.
and thanks in advance.
It's been that long since I rooted my phone I've forgotten how to do a backup without rooting! Titanium backup needs root.
Have you tried booting into recovery mode then doing a backup from the menu that appears (vol up+home then press power until Galaxy Note boot screen appears then let go of all buttons) I'm pretty sure you can backup from there.

You can have it either ways, wiped clean or not, up to you..
At the pre rooted ROMs thread there is a screen shot showing the three file you will find in the zips and the places they should be put at in Odin, if you do NOT want to wipe your data do NOT choose the CSC file, only flash PDA and phone (modem)
Or you can use Titanium Backup to backup your user apps only, do NOT backup system apps but your settings will be lost of course
Your preference
EDIT: Sorry forgot you don't have root lol! Sorry have no idea how to backup without root, try the poster above me suggested
Congrats Matius! 1000 posts! That is great work!
no you can't backup using that method, it just give me options to reboot, wipe everything off and some other things. all i need to backup is mainly my contacts and some data, ill try kies.
Kies should work. I wish I could remember what I did to create the backup - I've done a quick google and only found using adb and a terminal prompt, which I have never used. A quick search of Google Play shows some that may be worth a try and are free.
Wish I could be more help but for the life of me can't remember what I did that first night with my Note and got it to backup.
Good luck with Kies and enjoy flashing ROMs!
even kies doesnt work. i think astro backup will backup my files, as for settings ill just have to deal with it.
OK - good luck!
BTW - If you get heat issues after flashing - don't panic! Leave the phone off for five to ten minutes to cool down then charge it for an hour with the screen off. I found this was my biggest worry when I started flashing. Got really hot - thought the screen would melt. Now I just use the above process and never have problem.
All the best!

[Q] JB advice

Hello everyone, im a noob on here and have a stock gingerbread (JW4) but rooted gt-i9000. im past my 24 months and can upgrade my phone at anytime but i love my sgs but am a bit annoyed that sammy are no longer creating firmware updates for it. so i decided to root it with the intention of finding a way of missing ICS and going straight to jellybean.
it seems the only way to go is by installing custom roms, but as im not particularly technical and not understanding the mechanics that well i dont want to / i am scared of messing with the phone without really knowing what im doing. ive heard of kernels but dont know what they are or what they do. ive dabbled with rooting but that is as far as ive got and im not convinced im not gonna break the phone if i go any further!
I got so far (thanks to a senior member on here in other threads) but have stopped for fear of not knowing what im doing and getting something wrong, so im hoping someone out there who's been in my position will be nice enough to help me further.
so basicly im asking for some help to find and install a version of JB that is near enough to what samsung would of supplied. ive seen it on a mates s3 and i like it thats why i want it on my phone, rather than buying the s3 (big brick of a phone)
Thanking anyone who helps in advance.
G.
first of all you shouldn't be afraid to mess your phone. it's really hard do brick it (believe me, i've semi-bricked my phone some times and it's running great now ). besides that, if you follow the tutorials exactly like as it's written you shouldn't get in trouble
second, do you have CWM recovery installed?

Hi and thanks for your reply! Yes ClockWorkMod root/recovery is where ive got to. The reason i finding this all so daunting is that is no 1 tutrial to follow, everyone seems to have a different way of doing it, either by experimentation or luck, and its just a bit confusing to a complete novice like me. I did try to find a How To section on here but it wasnt easy trying to trawl the 1000s of threads!

I was exactly the same at first but now I am on jellybean 4.2 the scariest thing as far as upgrading to jellybean is the error u get wen upgrading cwm wen u first flash the upgrade but just hold the 3 button combo for about 10 seconds an u should be back into recovery it may take a few Trys it did with me then reflash it twice to be sure any problems after that will have answers on their threads so as long as you follow the installation instructions you will be OK

the basic procedure to flash a new rom is this:
Put the file in your internal sdcard
Do a Nandroid Backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition + wipe dalvik) i also like to go to mount and storage and wipe /data, /datadata, /system, /cache.
flash zip from sdcard
reboot
if you are going to upgrade from froyo/GB to JB i recommend you to flash any ICS rom first (once i have a problem with upgrading from stock GB to MIUI JB

Thanks everyone for your input.
I took the plunge and braved it and followed a tutorial "for dummies" and a youtube flick that someone had reference to the same tutorial, and decided on CM10 with GAPPS flash, and i now have JB 4.1.2. However i didnt either
1. do ICS first, or
2. do a Nandriod backup
!!!!!!!!
Got me worried now, I wonder if i should of done the ICS first - whats the benefit of this?
Nandriod Backup - what is this?
everything seems to be working fine, but i do have a couple of issues a) no 4x3 keyboard which i use for texting b) poor battery life.
im going to scour this forum for some answers, but if you have any immediate answers that would be very helpful.

nand backup is just like saving the stage of your phone before you start to flash it so you can go back if you need to. if you have problem you can always flash a stock rom via odin but you will lose your data.
about the keyboard i don't know if you can have it with ics/jb but try swiftkey x. way better

Its usually only jumping from GB to JB that does it. Just use a root file browser, i personally recommend solid explorer btw, go to root, find the folder called /efs and copy and paste it onto your external sd for safe keeping. Its no big problem if you do lose your imei then, just copy and paste it back and overwrite.
