Okay I was bored and after hearing about the facebook app only allowing specific devices to use sync I came up with this.
I basically just used apktool by Brut.all to change a few strings, simples!
You will need to have an Eclair ROM, uninstall facebook if you already have it then just install this like normal and sign in with facebook or add it in accounts to sync.
You can get it here, here or here.
Now go play with your phones and be happy
I must have missed this before but apparently you can achieve the same thing by editing your build.prop http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6399791&postcount=3183.
Just a little note but not really relevant, this mod won't work with the sapphire.
UPDATE:

Inspired by your edits here, I'm trying to do get FB Sync working with the Samsung Moment. Rather than changing the product names as you did, I just changed the entire getAllowedPackages so it always returns FULL_ALLOWED_PACKAGES. However, it appears to only sync phone numbers and emails. I don't own a G1 so I can't test your version, does your version properly sync profile images and statuses?

I've taken bugmenever's method and it does seem to work. The difference with this one is that instead of replacing some strings which removed support for sapphire so it could work with the dream, is this always returns FULL_ALLOWED_PACKAGES which should in theory let it work with anything capable of running eclair. I only have a dream so I can't test it on anything else but if anyone else could test it that would be great.
Here is the link http://www.4shared.com/file/kdb7ZvEy/_2__signed-facebook.html
No feedback ?
Is it working? Anyone having any problem? Maby a thanks ?
Well I think this should be posted in the app section, for one....
But yes it works, although you have to open the app after setting up the sync for the sync to actually work.

Thanks for the reply, I was in two minds weather or not this was the right section for it and I choose this one as it's a mod as-well as assuming people would look for something like this here. But if it doesn't belong here then feel free to move it .
Thanks, good work.
thanks i was missing this
Your welcome guys, and thanks to who ever moved it to the apps section
I put it on the root of my SD card and tried to install it with Astro and it interrupts the installation and says "Application cannot be installed".....
If someone could help me with this it would be GREAT!

If you have facebook installed from the market you need to uninstall that first, if it doesn't work after that then try installing with adb.
ADB said failure to install app
i wasn't able to install through astro or terminal.
First check the MD5
Code:
d76da20c1c5a49152bf309630b6841f3
to see if your download is corrupt, if that's not it then post the output of logcat and what ROM you are using as it won't work with some ROMs(zachattack052 & xillius200's HERO).
Couldn't get it to work on Cyanogen's latest Donut either. Same error as others, saying "Application could not be installed." I had previously uninstalled the Market Facebook app so don't know what the problem could be. Thanks for trying, though!

This is only meant for Eclair ROMs to provide account synchronisation, if your on Donut then you may aswell use Facebook from the market
Thanks so much. This works great
Tried this on CM5 (test5), md5sum produced the same md5 hash, and I get "Application not installed" as well.
Not sure what the issue is. What did you change in the apk to allow it to work on the Dream/G1s? Perhaps a specific radio or firmware setting is interfering.
yes please Im using cm test 5 and I get the same error. I would love to use this
Use Firerat's fb patch instead on the Market 1.2, it works much better: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=679572

It's basically the same as Firerat's method but instead of changing the build.prop I changed the strings in the app. Other than that it's the same as the one on the market. Not sure why it wont work for you though, I've tried it after installing other ROMs and it always works.

[Edit]
Turned out that the lovely chinese governement somehow got to Android
Anyhow, thanks to Marcus, we have the solution, tested & confirmed working by myself.
Please follow the instructions at that link :

Then you'll be happy. If you need more detailed informations, let me know.
I haven't been trying to understand the changes I made. If you somehow feel that it's a problem for you, then leave the phone as is. Also, I guess this will be usable only for rooted phones.
Have fun! And once again, thanks to Marcus.

[original post, FYI]
Hey all,
Starting yesterday, I am having this error with the market.
Any app I try to get will give me that error : download was unsuccessful, please try again blah~
Weird thing is that it really happened out of the blue, because it was working fine until yest noon. I am on CM 5.0.7.1-N1, with the radio that came with Froyo. Issue exists with Wi-Fi and 3G.
I tried : reboot (multiple times), newer CM, Nandroid restore to a point when it was working, deleted/recreated APN.
I m too lazzy to try and downgrade the radio, and haven't tried to install Froyo.
Strange thing is : gmail app won't connect, but the email app will work (well, I knew that it isn't an internet access related issue, but still...). If I try and install a ROM from scratch, the initial Google login will fail again and again.
Actually, I have one suspicion. I am in Beijing, on China Unicom. I know that China hasn t been kind on Google lately. Any other user in China experiencing this same issue? Or does this just happen sometimes?
Thanks!
I am in GuangDong, and for the past 2 days similar things just happened to me.
I didn't use the GMail app but now you mentioned it, I tried it and it didn't work. It is stuck with "No connection (Retry)" screen
Using Email and setup a GMail account works fine with me as well.
Hopefully, this is not one of the other 'stunt' of the Great China Firewall.
Argh...
I do believe that we may be f***ed, at least temporarily...
Let s see where it goes, but if you do experience the same troubles, then it might a nation-wide thingy.
Are you on China Unicom, too?
Only time will tell.... But let's hope we won't have to give up on Android in China.
Any other Android friends in China having troubles? I ll update the title of the tread, see if we can catch more people's eyes.
Re: [In China only ?] Market : suddenly, "Download was unsuccessful..."
I'm in Shanghai and can only access market apps and gmail syncing with my vpn.

Guys there is a fix here: hiapk.com/bbs/thread-278678-1-1.html
Good Luck
Marcus
Hey, good catch!
Will give it a shot, then report back here how it went.
Thanks
[Edit] It works! Follow Marcus link, and you ll get unstuck.
If anybody needs detailed directions, feel free to let me know.
Will edit the title and original post.
Romain
***EDIT
Gmail and the Market work on my US simcard roaming on China Unicom.
I'm in Guangdong; i've also had the same issues with Gmail and the Market at the same time. Both don't work on the network (Unicom) or WiFI connections; I'll have to give that fix a try later, thanks.
Hello!
Can somebody translate the procedure into English?
Thanks!
The procedure is to edit your host file with the information shown.
I m happy to share this, so here is the easy way to do:
1-get the file rootexplorer, which is attached here, if you don't have it.
2- install it, of course If you do not have a file explorer to get to it, then push the file.
3- open it, then find the folder /etc, open it
4- remember to touch the button "Mount R/W" to change the status of the text r/o into r/w right next to the button.
5- find the file called "hosts", and long press it. scroll all the way down to "Open in Text Editor"
6- there is already a line of stuff in there, so just skip a line and type :
209.85.135.100 clients2.google.com1
209.85.135.101 android.l.google.com
209.85.135.100 android.clients.google.com
underneath. I guess the spacing does not really matter, but they have to be each on a different line, as shown here. Also, it is a pain in the ass to type, so make sure there is no typo at first try
7- in options, save&exit (it creates a backup by itself)
8- reboot (not sure if that s necessary)
9- it works
there you go.

Hi, I am guessing that no, it won't, since you need to access root files. I m not sure but seems to make sense to me.
Sorry! Also, this is what is preventing me to go straight away to Samsung i9000, since it isn't rooted yet...
I didn't root my Legend yet and if i do so and the fix doesn't work, I will be stuck with the phone with no app on it.
At least now I have all my apps and only Gmail and the Market don't work.
Any idea from where this issue come from and if it will resolve itself?
It's the end of the chinese holiday... so maybe some hope...
sorry i m naive in the field of this mobile tech world .
i reached to the hosts file through your solution but i can't change read only files to write
this rooting stuff looks too complicated for htc desire .
is there any other way , without roooting my desire
Sorry, mate. I don't own a desire, so I really cannot help with this issue.
True enough, it's only those two apps which will not work, but still a little annoying to have to go and look online for the apps and to download them manually.
Ask on the Desire forum about this
4- remember to touch the button "Mount R/W" to change the status of the text r/o into r/w right next to the button.
In my htc desire i can't get this "mount r/w" is its the functionality of root explorer . because i can't see any option to change from r/o to r/w
Hey, what can i do if my phone isn't rooted?
Same problem as everyone has, apps not installing and no gmail.
I dont get it, why it happened. Stupid Great firewall.
I have froyo 2.2. how can i root it just to change hosts files? dont want any custom roms tho. tnx
okay so i just started to get my phone ready to hack, but when i want to save my apps with titanium it says: your system settings will prevent you from restoring applications. to correct this go to yourphones settings, then in "applications" and tick the "unknown sources" check box.
so i go to settings--->applications---> than i get thismanage applications, running services, development, usp settings.
were is the unknown sources check box?

You have to enable sideloading. With the captivate it is not available through settings because of at&t
Roms like cognition if you choose to flash it will enable sideloading.
Make sure you get rom. Manager from the market and read up on it
Use appbrain from market to easily restore all apps. Without enabled sideload.
I am a noob as well, but these are key steps before you start messing around especially rom manager

For the many people who are having problems with Titanium, 3 things:
1 - there is only 1 version of titanium. what makes it the paid version is a text file called titaniumBackupLicense.txt that contains your info. it goes in memory, just like the titaniumbackup folder.
2 - you must have debugging enabled or it goes VERY slow
3 - in titanium, press the menu button, got to preferences. All the way at the bottom is "app processing mode". change to "auto, indirect" and reboot, then run the batch.
I hope this helps

I have had many phones and have always looked here for improvements. My Captivate Galaxy S is the best one so far. This info about first having to sideload the phone before using Titanium is key. Had I known my phone needs to be flashed in order to use Titanium I would not have purchased it. And all of the other info about odin, appbrain, rom manager, etc is scattered everywhere. There is nothing straight ahead about any of this. And sometimes when people put of good info with good intentions they assume you know all of the terminology and tech talk which is not always the case. Its easy to make a mistake since all these tools are dependent on each other. I want to backup my apps, data, and rom, but I am only willing to go so far and do not want to flash my phone right now since there have been way too many screw ups. I am content to wait for the offical AT&T release of 2.2. Sometimes when someone asks a question he/she runs the risk of being ridiculed for not reading thru everything. I don remember it being so nasty here before. I'll continue to try and FIND and DECIPHER what I need to backup the phone but asking a question can be hazardous to your health.

first of all. all the info is here. its important to read and understand what it is you are doing before you dive in. I realize that its all scattered around, but just figure out what you want to do and then focus on understanding that one thing. then move on to the next.
secondly. you do not have to flash a rom in order to enable sideloading, have a look in the dev section, or in the apps section. there is a one click decrippler that will enable sideloading, or it can be done manually. It is not hard if you follow directions.
ok

I rooted my Galaxy S, installed the USB drivers, installed NET 4.0. Ran one click OCD and it said it was sucessful. I did this in order make Titanium backup work. But Titanium is still giving a message saying to tick "unknown sources" under applications in order to enable restoring apps, however unknown sources is still nowhere to be found. I only saw the one comment about unknown sources that said i needed to enable side apps to make it visible and that it is not there because of AT&T restrictions. Since i enabled side apps is there something else that Titanium requires to work properly? If I can't get it going what would be a good second choice for making backups? thanks

The unknown sources checkbox is an i9000 thing. It doesn't appear in regular captivate roms, though you can still do what needs to be done. You have 2 choices, IMO:
1 - Install a rom that is already sideloading-enabled (which is pretty much any rom)
or
2 - Pay for 2 apps that are worth it..... Buy and install Root Explorer.... navigate to /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.settings/settings.db and copy it to /sdcard. Then, When you try to open it, it'll say you need to buy and install sqlite editor... buy it and install..... go to secure...... line 3, install_non_market_apps.... change the value from 0 to 1, then save and exit. Then, copy it back where you got it from and reboot

Glad to hear you got it going....
Happy Modding!!
I created a custom Rom, a really great mash up for people that like certain things from eugenes R2 final and Nero using KA6 while also implementing a very nice stock look (stock gingerbread messaging, dialer, contacts)... calling it Frankenstein. I of course will give credit and am not taking any credit away from these real great devs... this is just a mash-up.
This is where I need my [Help] while doing this, testing on my vibrant etc. I have managed to mess up my market.... my phone started off by not being able to connect (data) at all, and only having basic phone ability (mms, callling out).. I have fixed that, but no matter if I odin back to stock, do the eugene froyo odin/reformat back to jfd.. the market will not update. No apps really whatsoever... I get more apps when going to a rom like Nero V5 vs. stock JFD.. so this tells me that I am getting the market the way it was when they were implemented into the roms? but even with nero v5 im still missing a great deal such as titanium backup, file managers... even little things like doodle jump....
anyone that can provide detail that leads to a fix i will happily donate $15 via paypal, no big deal.
files must be missing, would love help.
Edit: have tried clearing data, resigning in.. all the little things... and as i said i have flashed back to jfd... now im on jfd with apps such as firefox test.. and a bunch of apps that were most likley the first apps ever put on market.. this puzzles me.
Thanks, Brandon
the only featured app right now is auto focus snake.. which looks like a android test app...

seems to be an issue with SGS devices and the market? WTF
Attached is a copy of the vending.apk I've been using in my kangs, and haven't had a problem with it. It shows all apps, on my phone its updated by now, but if it isn't when you push it, it should update properly given a little bit and a reboot. I would say if this doesn't fix your issue, it may be something else in your build. Just push the file to the system/app folder in your build, reboot and test it. Or, copy and replace the vending.apk in your working files, recompile and flash your rom, and test it. Good Luck.
so, select section you want, select free or latest or whatever, and you will see them.... or just search for the app you want
IMEI issue
I had the same issue all test apps in market and really no access.
I had to restore my backup and relock the phone.
Now all is working.
It is because certain apps don't recognize the Vibrant's build number. (T959KA6 is an example of a build number)

You have to have a backup copy of your original.
If you do delete the files that start with nv -- in the /efs directory.
You probably can see your original IMEI if you open the file that is hidden in the directory /efs it is .imei -- That held the correct number for my IMEI. not sure if someone knows how to use that if you dont have an original backup of nvdata.bin.
I took nvdata.bin and put it in the /efs directory.
removed all files that start with nv in /efs example nv2data.bak
rebooted phone it built md5 from nvdata.bin.
factory reset and all apps back.
I also coudlnt get my pro license of titanuim backup to register with google checkout until this was completed.

IMEI
You're IMEI can easily be found by just taking out your battery and looking under it at the sticker with all the numbers and bar codes. It may just show IME and have either dashes or periods (you can ignore the punctuation). That is your original IMEI (this is nothing more than your serial number, make sure you know what it is because if you ever have a hardware issue and want to still utilize your warranty then they check by this number, and of course unroot the phone first so it won't be considered out of warranty)
First off this work is based on Digiblur's PRL Write Enabler from the Sprint Galaxy S3 forum. I simply modified it & packaged it for our Sprint Galaxy S4 devices.
Here is the original S3 post that this was found in... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159054
Also, post #8 below provides additional info.
I tested it by flashing with TWRP and it worked on my stock, rooted S4 with the MDC and MDL releases.
If you're on a stock rooted Rom and not using TWRP, you can just copy the HiddenMenu.apk from inside the zip file downloaded into /system/app/ and overwrite the one that's there. (You'll need a root enabled file browser to do this of course).
Thanks to Unknownforce here is a version for MJA...

Enjoy!!
This certainly will save me from having to use CDMA WS to switch like I just did yesterday. 55014 was not working well for me in my market so I switched back to 25014.

You mean the install of the zip?
If so, you can pull the APK out of the zip and replace HiddenMenu.apk in the system folder (make a backup first). You may want to also set the permissions to rw-r-r after replacing the system app. Reboot, then you should be good to go.
@ChadH42,
I know it seems like I'm harping on you but I'm really not..
You need to update the OP on - 1. What is this? 2. What does this do? 3. Why is this in the Development Section.. ?
A good OP leads to less questions.. Development Sections aren't for information. That would be considered a Discussion Thread that belongs in General.
Let's keep the Dev section clean from the start.
My suggestion - Edit the OP on the What's/Why's?/How To's and you won't get posts like mine.
To the OP, updated your title as [WIP], and I suggest you provided additional information so that folks aren't bricking their new devices.
I will check in, if you need anything, let me know.
What this MOD does (in case the OP takes a little while to chime in)
What this MOD does is modifies our ##DATA# (select View) menu to allow for the PRL Write option to appear and function. With this menu option, the user can change their PRL on the fly from the device itself by placing a copy of the desired PRL in the root directory of Internal Storage and name it "test.prl" (no quotes), dial ##DATA# (choose View), tap Write PRL, tap the sub-menu option Write PRL ---wait--- and then the device reboots with the test.prl PRL applied upon reboot. Not every PRL works and sometimes it takes a couple of tries.
A tip for multiple PRL options is to, of course, keep a folder of the PRLs you like and keep them labeled in there. Copy the desired PRL to proper place as needed and just remember to rename the copy to "test.prl". Switch back and forth as you please. I hope this helps clear some confusion and helps some find purpose with the MOD like I have.
For a clear set of instructions that I did not want to just copy verbatim, check the link below. Also, if you are having issues with the zip not installing in CWM, just extract the APK from the ZIP (inside the system/app folder), use Root Explorer or your favorite root-access file explorer to place the APK in the APP folder, apply the proper permissions and reboot.

So I unzipped the file, replaced the hidden menu original apk with the new one, then set permissions, rebooted, then tried ##3282# and the view and edit options do not appear.. .. It just blanks out the items I just entered

Did you clear Cache when you rebooted?
What ROM are you using?

I just tried this mod with the Force ROM and it did the same thing (blank options). The only thing I can think of is that it works with the odex version of the stock ROM so maybe its a problem with deodex ROMs of which Force is one.
O okay. Its currently not a necessary thing for me at the moment, just nice for when I travel to Alabama. Hopefully later on someone gets it working on deodex.

I am actually running it on the Rooted Stock DeOdexed ROM. So I don't think it is an Odex/DeOdex issue...might be a Force ROM issue.
Also, moot point for Force ROM (1.0+) anyway because the PRL Write mod is already included with that.
I'm also having this problem and I'm pretty sure it was working this morning. I haven't flashed anything since then.
edit-- I tried:
1. wiping both cache's
2. killing background process "OIThiddenmenu"
neither fixed it.
I reinstalled the stock odex ROM and flashed this again and it worked.
Just an FYI, OP, I get Error Status 6 when trying to flash this via recovery, which indicates one of two things. Either the format of the file is incorrect or there is a syntax error. The syntax looks fine, but opening in basic Notepad shouldn't "look pretty" like it currently does. So it's likely it was edited with a non-Unix-compatible text editor like Notepad or MS-Word...
To make modifications to an updater-script (or just about any Android/Linux files like this) you need something like Notepad++ or gVim.
Anyways, I did a quick test with this, and it does in fact not work on my ROM as it is, but I see why it's failing, but I don't know what exactly it's trying to reference yet. (It fails with an id number instead of a name, so I'll have to de-compile some things to find it.)
I'm not sure it's a ROM issue or a MOD issue yet. (meaning it might have to be updated for each custom ROM, depending on how they are configured) But I'll track it down and update when I can.

Thanks for all your help here..
I had the error status 6 problem in the beginning and thought I fixed it. You are correct that I used MS WordPad to edit the files.

I think TWRP can read the non Unix type characters, which is why it works on a different recovery.
I'm hoping it's a mod issue and I can just modify the mod to work universally regardless of the rom. But we'll see.
