Does anyone know if this follow scenario is possible?
I want to connect the phone up to my computer via BT or the USB cord, and then the phone will connect via WiFi (802.11b/g) to a wireless router. Can this be done?
Thanks in advance.

Yes. It can be done with a program like wifi internet sharing. I have not used it myself, but NRG has it in his newest rom. You will want to link up with the usb cord because anytime I have wifi and BT going at the same time (internet wifi and BT headphones) there is a conflict. I have also heard that it isn't a great program, but you can find out for yourself. Hope that helps.

I have to say that it does work. Im using NRG latest Energy rom, july 29, and i can share the internet from my fone to the laptop through wifi and connect the laptop to the internet. basically the fone works like a router... or u can also connect and share internet through usb... it seems to work just a lil bit faster.
I'm not sure how else to explain this. I'm NOT looking to use the cell phone's data plan. I AM looking to use the phone as a usb wireless (802.11b/g) adapter for the computer.
Anything like this?
The Wifi internet sharing is attempting the use of the data plan (no good for my situation).

its wifi to usb mode is awesome. it will try to pick up a free hotspot first, but you can manually connect to a wpa/wep secured network and then launch it, works like a champ everytime.

Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=377047
u can always try to "obtain" a copy of wmwifirouter
This is just my opinion. It might be wrong!
If you've a computer that can connect to your cell phone with Bluetooth.
I'm quite sure that the computer must have Wifi function also.
Why you want to do some easiest thing to be much more complicated!
@navi_mapper:
Not always; I've seen some laptops with a Bluetooth only card, a WiFi only card, and Bluetooth/WiFi combo cards.
It likely the purchaser may not have chosen a combo option or the laptop came with Bluetooth only. Worst case, the laptop may have shipped with a legacy WiFi device and is too costly to replace.
Cheers,

Note that there are early versions of WMWifiRouter (up to V.91, IIRC) still available that were released without encumberance. While it might not be Chainfire's preference, it's not exactly discussing "warez" to use an older version. Granted - the person you're cautioning seems to be insinuating that you get a cracked version...
I recommend paying for it, though - the supported paid version is a lot more reliable (and you can actually uninstall it without borking your network setup). It also offers a very nice USB-to-Wifi interface. I think the free ICSControl offered elsewhere on this forum does the same (USB-to-Wifi), but in my brief experience with that program it was not as reliable as WMWR.

wifi router not seen by some computers
any ideas why wifi router works on some of my computers but not others. I am using it right now, but my computer downstairs does not see it at all. Have same issue at work some computers see the wifi signal some do not. Seems to be a windows security setting? Works great on computers that see it.
Hi,
I just wanted to ask if anybody has gotten the usb tether feature to work with a mac? I can't seem to get it to work . Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Cyanogen posted on his twitter about a problem with the tethering on windows, not sure if it applies for mac aswell
thanks for the info, will stay alert then!!
btw i know i should wait for the next release for the usb problem, but the thing is that i get the option to mount usb, but if i mount i cant see the device on my computer, and then i get a damaged sd card message on my phone... Anybody got something on this??
thanks

See if the card will mount in a reader, if not format the card on the phone. If it keeps happening you might need to buy a new card.
i tried
ok
1. you cannot have both USB tethering and USB disk support at the same time.
2. in order for the device to be picked up as a modem/networking device in mac, its gonna need drivers?
how are you supposed to get it working in linux? perhaps the same method could be done via terminal?
edit: 4.2.3.1 , M_Blend Blue b2, Mac 10.5.8 on PowerBook G4 1.67 (PPC)
edit2: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Tethering - If someone figures it out, please update this wiki to explain to the public how to do it. Thanks. I suppose this goes the same for Windows, if you find the driver that works- Share the knowledge!
hey, I'm also interested in getting this to work on a mac. It does seem like we'll need drivers of some sort, I just have no idea where/what to look for. anyone have ideas? I think i'm going to ask cyanogen via twitter, we'll see what happens

Forgive me if this was addressed, but I couldn't see it in the rom thread. I'm running 4.2.3.1 and I can't seem to get the usb tether to work. I'm running windows 7, and when I first checked the box, it went through the add hardware wizard, but said the device could not be installed, and now nothing happens.....Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on the issue.
Thanks
Still can't get tethering to work
I tried using my girlfriend's computer, and it worked, but I still can't get it to work on mine.
I'm running windows 7 on a dell inspiron E1505. Not sure if anyone can help. I'd really like to get this working if possible.
No reason to tether through USB... just go wireless on it. (unless you don't have a wireless adapter, I use an iMac so it's built in.)
Tethering works fine on 4.2.3.1 with the new tether 1.60pre_3. I've never tried through the USB though, but i've read it works.

mrandroid, USB tethering is a lot faster than wireless tethering. Performance is the primary motivation. I'm trying to get it working on my MacBook, but haven't succeeded yet.

I understand, but if you can't get it done don't despare... you'd be surprised how fast the wireless works. I use it all the time in the car... Tether my iTouch to the G1 lol... works great.
It's due to RNDIS and no support in 10.5 +
The method the tethering CM uses is RNDIS... Current OS X versions do *NOT* support this as it's an MS licensed implementation - some linux distro's support it under licensed terms with MS (or sideways non legal implementations)
There is an RNDIS driver for Mac but it does require some modification to get it to work.... 10.4 had internal support; Leopard and Snow Leopard *DO NOT*.
See: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/MacOS_X#Apple_CDC_Ethernet_driver_10.5.x (This applies to a Neo device - but same story)
If someone on Windows can grab the Networking UPNP info we can modify the source base to work ; though it will work on Leopard; no one has ported this driver yet to Snow Leopard... source: http://bugcommunity.com/downloads/files/AppleUSBCDCDriver-g_ether.326.4.1.zip
I can't get either Apple's CDC nor AJZaurusUSB driver to work in 10.5.8. Frustrating to say the least.

While I commend your efforts, if I have to go to those lengths to get usb tethering to work on os x, I'll just continue to use wireless tethering.
I'd love to see someone tackle this. I get free WiFi at tmobile hotspots on my phone, but not my pc, I could surf on my mac through usb, using the WiFi on my phone if this was implemented.
usb tethering on snow leopard?
Hello guys,
did anybody got cyanogenmod working with usb tethering on snow leopard?
Kind regards,

i'd also love to get USB tethering working with Cyanogenmod 7.
<an URL that i can't post because i'm a new user> says that RNDIS was added back to stock OSX as of 10.5.8. i guess this is a vicious rumor and a lie? anyone have more info?
the link is the first one that currently comes up if you google for "+rndis osx 10.5.8". it's a single post at mac-forums.com.
I decided to try linux and installed Ubuntu on my laptop but i cannot connect to the internet, can you search for connections some way? or do you have to add them manually, if so how do you do that? Sorry if this is a noobish question
Thanks
How to get support for Ubuntu
Would be worth doing some reading as sure the wi-fi will not be the only thing that you will have to work out
Anyway a.f.a.k you will probably need the drivers for your wireless.

No, no new option. I just plugged it up. One thing tho, I have updated my SDK when the 2.2 SDK came out, but I wasn't asked to update my USB driver, so that's probably irrelevant. It worked just like before the update.

<<---Tethering...
Does anyone know any hacks to get it working on Mac OS X?
USB tethering and wifi hotspot both working flawlessly with a netbook using Windows XP home here.
Maybe the OP error was trying to install the tethering driver for the mass storage device, or the adb device that pops up when connecting the Nexus One if you have "USB debugging" on. I suggest connecting the phone to usb, ignoring any popups that appear asking for drivers (if any) and then active USB tethering on the phone, a new device asking for a driver should pop up. The driver goes there.
Hotspot and Tethering worked fine for me testing with a Windows 7 netbook.
Mine working perfectly with windows 7

Wifi tethering is built into the leaked 2.2 rom. Just go to Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile AP
If not on 2.2, this is the best I've seen so far. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
USB tethering is built into the phone.
For 2.2: Settings > Wireless and network > Tethering.
For 2.1: Settings> Applications > USB Settings
Isn't the built in usb tethering in 2.1 so you can use at&t's subscription tethering service? If not I wasted $10 on EasyTeather. (which works like a CHAMP btw.)
PDANet adds the bonus of being able to text using your computer also. Costs more if I remember right.
For sure on froyo MobilAP is full of win.

Ideas?

Samsung's i896 Captivate (Rogers version) allows for wireless tethering, stock:
Settings -» Wireless and network -» Mobile AP settings -» [hit the checkbox]
AFAIK, PDANet is a free-download:
junefabrics [dot] com/android/download.php [you know what to do]
This works for me, I've tested it: very easy setup.
Could it be, that the i897 (AT&T) rendition of the Captivate does not include wireless tethering by default...?

Got WiFi Up and Running...But...
OK OK...thanks to the thread WIFI is up and running on the captivate (tethering I am still clueless). But I am using the latest version of WIFI TETHERING and it appears to be working fine. I am using wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre11.apk version on this site:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
BUT:
Here is the real pickle now....it works GREAT (about 2MBPS) until I try to bring a game up to play (like BF2). Then, the internet simply stops. Any suggestions on how to bypass this?
I know this sounds like a real trivial question...but the AT&T cap on data cards simply devastated our internet in my house (we live in the sticks). I am trying to find a good alternative.
To summarize:
Internet now works on WIFI until I try to bring a game up to play (like BF2). Then, the internet simply stops. Any suggestions on how to bypass this?
One possibility for you would be to install Cognition. It enables both Mobile AP and USB Tethering, among other things. You have two choices, Eclair or Froyo. Cognition 2.1.7 is Eclair and includes the JH7 rom update. This version is completely stable. The Cognition 2.2 Froyo beta versions are also good but there are a couple of issues.
I have had Cognition 2.1.6 installed since the day Froyo was first leaked. I decided not to intall Froyo until the release version is available. My version of Cognition runs fantastic. There are zero issues.
When you have USB Tethering insatlled, there will be an additional option in the USB Settings screen: Samsung Kies, Media player, Mass storage, "PC Internet" and Ask on Connection. PC Internet is the Tethering option.
I havn't used either wifi mobile ap, or usb tethering much, so I don't know how well either of them works, but just thought this might be one possible solution for you to try.

I have both working setup yesterday via Perception. All I did is go to Wireless and Networks and chose MobileAP. That's for the wireless. Then for the usb, I chose Tethering. My windows installed an Samsung NDIS driver for the device.
It works perfectly on the internet. However on VPN, it works but I get disconnected in less than 2 minutes. I am able to remote desktop to a Windows machine as well as ssh to a unix machine but after a minute, my access is gone. The remote machine wouldn't respond anymore. I had to disconnect my VPN then reconnect again. Not sure why.
I can't speak for the stock ROM since I've been on Cognition for quite a while and now Perception. However, I just tried the USB Tethering on Perception... plugged in the USB cable, selected Mass Storage... then went into Settings->Wifi->Tethering and turned on USB Tethering. Took Windows a minute to install the drivers and whatever else it decides to do when you plug something new in and withing about a minute and a half, was connected to the internet via my phone. (typing this on it right now actually)
I believe Cognition had the same option available... but can't be 100% sure since I never used it prior to just now.
Have also used the wifi tethering without issue since some of the earlier cognition 2.2 releases.
