Resurrect a toilet dived G1? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I realize this has probably been posted and resolved but I cannot find any solutions yet. So here's the deal:
My fiancee dropped ger G1 into the toilet abot 2 months back or so. I was cleaning and stumbled across it and figured I would check and see if it had dried out okay or not. It is a non rooted black G1 running android 1.6. I tried a coupke of things and figured out I can turn it on now but it goes directly to the bootloader screen. I have ran the DREAIMG.nbh for rc29 and it will update it okay no problems. The issue is that after a soft boot(? Is that the right phrase?) By pushing menu power and call that it boots up...and goes right back into bootloader and tried to run the rc29 update again.
Has anyone else stumbled across this problem and if so how did you solve it? It boots into the factory recovery fine also and will run update.zip files but then once again boots directly to bootloader.
I am trying different things and tweaking here and there because I have a pretty strong feeling this isn't impossible. I'm just overlooking something I'm sure. If this issue has been resolved can someone post the link to the thread or even pm me and give me ideas here. I'm trying to root it since it seems the operating system is shot as is.

the reason it goes into the bootloader is most likely that there is still moisture under the keys .. my friend had the same situation .. the keys were constantly making contact and thus went wherever the keys led .. for instance: a stuck home key would get you into recovery .. a stuck back key gets into bootloader .. it takes quite a lot of effort and patience but if you can completely dry out the insides you should get it functioning again

Also, im pretty sure the G1 goes into the bootloader if there is a hardware failure(like the radio is not responding).
And how the hell did your fiance drop her G1 into the toilet? She better be hot because she sure as hell doesnt seem smart.

Happens to a lot of people...Kind of a rude statement for you to make about his fiance. On another note, OP, did you try burying the G1 in a bowl of rice (uncooked of course) and leaving it for a few days and then trying again. That has never failed me.

+1.... the rice trick usually works as long as you haven't messed around with it too much while it is wet.

make sure you remove the battery, sdcard and sim card so the rice can absorb more water too

Yup, I had a friend that dropped a G1 into a toilet months ago. He took everything apart you can take apart ie battery cover, battery, sim, SD card etc.. and he put it in a bowl of rice for 3 days. It's worked fine ever since..

you could get isopropanol ;D thats pure alcohol, then put the lower side of the g1 into a cup of that and let it dry for ~1 day. if that doesnt work i dont know how to go further ;D

Wrong section.

Double ditto on the rice. Instead of a bowl, though, I recommend a ziplock plastic bag. That way no additional moisture is getting the attention from the rice.
We did this with my wife's old phone, worked like a goddamn charm. I was amazed.

+5 on the rice idea. did that a long time ago with my brothers G1. He jumped into a lake after a discgolf disc. more worried about losing a $20 disc than a $300 phone. (We both pre-ordered the phone and i think thats how much it was.)

To be honest, there really is no point. The fact that its been like 2 months means most of them moisture should be gone. The reason the phone is going into the bootloader is because of a hardware failure. When the phone boots(the G1 screen) it runs hardware diagnostics. If there is a failure(which there is probably due to toilet water corrosion) it will go into the bootloader.
Anyway, forget the g1. She is your fiance ffs. Buy her something nice, like a MT Slide, or a Nexus
Let this be a lesson to all of you that get your phones wet. immediately after they get wet, remove the batteries, and submerge the phone in alcohol. Then put the phone in a ziploc bag with LOTS of silica gel packets. Leave in bag for 2 days.

Another story related on a french G1 forum :
A guy helped his sister to move. Exhausted, he went to the balcony to smoke and take a deep breath. While he was taking his cigarettes out of his pants, he realized he had also hung his G1, which fell from the 4th floor.
Sick of what occured, he went down to get his G1 back. Hopefully and even supernaturally, the screen was intact. Even more, when he tried to turn it on, he saw the G1 screen. It booted normally, and everything was working perfectly !!
Surprising, isn't it ?
That's why the HTC Dream (G1) is Magic (MT3G) !!

Lol I am getting her the mt slide next week lol. And in regards to "she doesn't sound very smart"... My fiancee works in assisted living and doesn't have much downtime. If you really need details(and why would you?) It fell out of her scrub pocket where you'd think it'd be safe at. S*** happens lol no need to say what was said.
My friend who has helped me rescue my phone a couple of times in my early rooting days recommended the rice bowl idea. Furthermore the phone doesn't boot into the G1 screen then to bootloader. Its going straight to bootloader. If its a radio problem is it possible to go thru and rename the current G1 radio to update.zip and flash it in recovery? Then the danger spl(which I have all saved on my pc from my rooting my G1). Thoughts? Ideas?
And thanks for the help guys btw

The rice trick won't help you anymore as there should be no moisture left after all that time. If you can disassemble it, clean it's guts with alcohol to get rid of shorts and it should probably be fine

Hey dude, sorry about the "she doesn't sound very smart." I was just trying to make a joke but I now realize that it was pretty rude. No need to explain. Also, when i said that, I didn't consider the fact that girls need to sit down to pee.
Now if a dude did that, that would be stupid.

Dropped my Tilt in sea water - stuck in tricolor

Hi guys,
i had just got back inside the dive shop's speedboat when my wife thought the she should check whether all had gone well during the dive.
I unwisely went to pick up the call, and dropped my tilt on the floor of the boat which had about 2 inches of water. I opened it up wiped it clean and left in the sun for about 3-4 hours. When i put it back together, it fired up and i thought i was home free.
Sadly, it somehow restarted itself and stuck on the tricolor screen. I tried a hard reset and it worked fine, booted and worked ok for about 2 days, except that sometimes it would auto-dial the last caller, like the green button was pressing itself.
Yesterday, it put itself in an endless restart loop where it would boot up and then 3-5 seconds in the boot sequence it would boot again, like someone was pressing the reset pinhole. I took the battery out once again, and when i put it back in, i just get the tricolor but the hard reset "trick" doesn't work anymore and i am stuck in the tricolor.
I just got back from my vacation and saw the various threads, so i thought i might add mine. I would appreciate any insight or ideas into how i would go about saving my phone...
Thanks a lot
I think your only chance is to take it apart and clean it -- salt water will corrode things quickly and lead to all kinds of nasty stuff.
I would open it up clean it with alcohol then put the parts in a bowl of uncooked rice for a day (works wonders on fixing wet watches and electronics), after putting it back together I would flash it to a STOCK rom, then flash to a ROM of your choice.
Thanks a lot for all the tips guys. Unfortunately i cannot open it up before the weekend, but i can do the rice bowl thing immediately and hope for the best.
I will keep you posted.
Thanks

Say bye to your phone then.. Salt water is extremely corrosive to electronics and even a few hours and then cleaned could be the end of it. Days? Well.. Let us know how it turns out.

Well put. People often don't realise that the usual tricks which may work if it's fallen into very pure water, won't work with salt water. If the o/p has insufficient time to do a proper job of it himself right away, then he may consider paying a professional to do it for him (even then he may be to late though).
Edit just realised my post number is 666 - sorry if this seems similarly harsh and cruel but its true.
Thanks for all the input guys, but i dont have a choice. I am somewhere without access to my tools or anybody else's tools for that matter.
Its now been a week since the phone fell in the drink, and that's that.
It still switches on - but stays in tricolor - so i hope that its not completely dead. Still, if it dies then it dies, and i will have to get another one. Maybe the HTC Leo when it comes out.
I will keep all of you posted.

Unless you're somewhere without a postal service and telephone service you still have choices. In fact thats how HTC in the UK arrange and receive many of their repair jobs.

Well if you are in the middle of nowhere without any modern equipt. except for the ancient internet, why would you even ask anyones advice if there was nothing you could do except put it in a bowl of rice. Everyone keeps trying to help you but you just keep telling them you can't do anything. Go buy your Leo and don't drop it in the dink mate. lol
Hello everyone,
I am now back home, where all my tools are available. I opened up the phone and cleaned it thoroughly with pure alcohol.
Dried it up and reassembled it, crossed my fingers and fired it up: And there it was!! It worked perfectly, and it has been doing so for almost 24 hours now.
Thanks once again for all your help.
@ Martinjv71
Thanks for your constructive comment. When i asked the question, i had no way of knowing that opening it up was just about the only thing i could do to save my phone. If you dont have something productive to say to people when they post something, just be quiet then. I asked people's help, not for your criticism, nor your wiseguy comments regarding my lack of access to tools, while having access to the internet. Your comment had absolutely zero added value in this conversation, so why did you even bother? We'll see how funny you think it is if you ever drop your phone in the drink.
If you must know, i was on holiday and then went on a business trip in a place where it was impossible to buy the tools and the hotel i was staying at did not have something i could borrow - while internet service is available in most hotels, size 6 torx screwdrivers are not.

Distilled water
You may have saved it. I usually go a bit further by removing the battery and soaking it for at least 30 seconds in distilled water.
If you have it apart at the time, only the electronics need the soak. Cards, Boards, switches, contacts. Water with salt or chlorine needs to be diluted and rinsed away. I have some long surviving Nokia 6800s to show for the effort!
I guess wiping it down may do the job for sealed parts/components.

The problem is that many people think they can get away with just drying it out and it'll work but when water containing minerals has contaminated the device, even when the water evaporates mostly away, the salt/minerals remain and as already mentioned can be considered a corrosion time bomb - I wouldn't say your out of the forrest yet either because there'll be areas you couldn't get at properly to clean (such as under ICs and in some switch contacts) so only time will tell. It's the same as cars which have been in floods. Even though they will be dried out and cleaned, they're still a huge corrosion risk compared to cars that have not been submerged.
I asked people's help, not for your criticism.

I can certainly understand peoples anger about your response because it did appear to me you weren't taking the urgency of the situation seriously. Even if you have no tools to perform a repair yourself, there's still the ability to post it to a repair centre. Where theres a will, there's a way.
I hope your Kaiser lives long and prospers - my fingers are crossed for you

Touch Screen Goes Crazy

I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this also. Sometimes my milestones touch screen start goin all crazy an pushing buttons an sliding pages an pretty much making a huge mess. This has happened before, an it went normal after 4 to 5 hours later, an now its happening again. I did some research sayin somethin about the touch screen an its reaction to humidity an stuff, but i wasnt sure. So im hoping someone here knows what is up an can tell me what i have to do.

Did you have your phone plugged in to a USB charger at the time? Was it the stock charger?
no, it doesnt happen jus when its chargin, it happens randomly, an no its not a stock charger, but i dont see what that would have to do with the screen goin crazy pushing everythin

Well, I would suggest that you try reverting back to using the stock charger for a few days and see if that helps. Using other chargers (esp from ebay) can cause similar effects on the Milestone/Droid due to voltage variances.
ill give it a try, an let you know what happens, thing is i bought the phone alone with no stock charger, so im gonna have to check on ebay for a stock one, but thanks again

Well, try buying a stock one from an authorized Motorola dealer. Every since I purchased one on ebay, I always make sure my Moto chargers come in a sealed, hard plastic, package in attempt to improve authenticity (However, I'm not sure how much that buys me).
Good luck.
I get this same issue.
Unplugged or not, on various roms from stock to motofrenzy.
sometimes the screen will just become really crazy.
If i open a webpage and just hold my finger on the screen in one place it will zoom in scroll up and down, all sorts.
I verified what was happening by downloading Multitouch visualiser 2 from the Market.
A reboot always fixes the problem
Its kinda frustrating, because i know that Moto just direct you to the place of purchase and i was not the original purchaser, so i have no chance of a warranty repair.
yeah ive tried everything, its driving me up the wall, its been like this for the last 30 hours,an i cant even use the phone, this is the worst it been, it usually goes away after 5 to 6 hours , but now its jus gone crazy, an ive restarted an removed the battery countless of times
but burko, are you using a sock wall charger or a ebay or differant brand wall charger.thanks

That happened with me, when the temperature degree outside is very high, I live in region the degree reach to 48degree, my phone screen goes crazy, so I think your charger make your phone very hot, so the sensitivity of your screen begin not work properly. I'm note sure, just want to share my idea.
Thanks,
well its been about 4-5 days already, an my phones touch screen still goin crazy, i thought maybe id go back, like the other times, but this time seems permanent an its extremely depressing thinkin about it cus i jus got it like a week and a half ago off a guy.ive tried countless of chargers, even my bros motorola backflip charger, an nothin. so im gonna assume its permanently gone. i would switch the digitizer but thats gonna cost money an might jus lose the entire phone, so im jus gonna throw it back on ebay an go back to my htc hero an jus wait for the milestone 2 to come out. but if anyone does find a solution please post it here. thx everyone R.I.P. All chargers using the micro USB spec should be the exact same voltage (and different current ratings depending on the charger, although different current values shouldn't affect your screen at all). I suspect that the voltages are very close, if not generally the same, but, the voltage may slightly fluctuate (or ripple) over time, which I believe may be causing the issue. The better quality the charger, the more constant the voltage.
If I were you I'd purchase an authentic Motorola Micro USB charger, and call it a day.

Go to a service center asap!
Dude, use your warranty. Take it to a service center.
Mine happened the same, and I decided to send it back to motorola and just got it back yesterday.
They replaced the glass screen and the frame which surrounds the glass.
It seems they removed that plastic from behind the screen on the slider, or also replaced the slider module.
I'd guess it might be a known issue for motorola, because my phone had scratches on the glass, plus a small crack on the screen ( yeah, I know, it's gorilla glass, but I'm an orc with mobiles ), the metal frame was all dented, and they replaced it anyway, when they could just said "this is misuse, it's failing because you drop it several times, go buy another one"
I already had this issue a few months before, it got better and I decided to keep on, and then it started again and got unusable, so don't get excited about it getting better, because probably will eventually start failing again.

Smoking HERO

Well today I left my cdma HTC HERO in a walk-in cooler at work to stock soft drinks and forgot I left it in there for 2 hours and when I went to power it on immediately after I got it out it started smoking out of the volume controls on the side and immediately shut-down. Boot screen loaded however battery indicator showed to to be all red before shut-down. Battery was around 95% before I left it in the cooler. Firgured I had toasted my phone (well in this case i guess iced it) so I said damn now I got to use my upgrade so it wasn't all that big of a deal however I gave the phone an hour rest and low and behold the phone powered back up with battery around 70% with ROM working normally. Just a little story I figured I'd share.
probably had condensation on the motherboard, lucky you didn't fry it.

Wtf is 99% condensation? Anyways, no condensation occurred until he took it out if the cooler and back into warmer, and more than likely moister, air. I routinely take my Hero into and out of storage freezers at work set to -10°F and blast freezers set to -30°F with no issues.

My old man stuck his hero in the washing machine once..
I left it sit out in the sun for a while to warm it up, then let it sit on a plate of
rice, covered with a paper towel.. The rice helped suck up some of the moisture.
I'd have used Silica dessicant, but didn't have any at the house.
His screen looked funny for a couple of weeks, but eventually returned to
normal. I did have to replace his battery, as lithium batteries do not like water.
Lithium in general reacts to water, and as such, I had a hunch his battery was
toast, so after I got the moisture out of the phone, I tested his phone with my
battery to make sure it powered up.
Can't say that your phone survived the water, but I will almost guarantee that
your battery did not survive the water.
any idea on the bad esn phone???
First Thing To Do If That Ever Happens Again (Hopefully Not) Is Immediately Take Out The Battery, Then.... What You Still Probably Can Try.... Get Out The Old "Hair-Dryer, & Get To Work!! If You Can, Blow The Air Into The Slot For The "Usb Cord" **It Worked For Me A Few Months Back** ??Might or Might-Not Work?? But It's Worth A Try!! Good-Luck!!

I second that, Hair-Dryer can/will mess it up. As far as BAD ESN, wont work, esn is stored in NV RAM on the motherboard.

[Q] My phone just flipped out on me...No it's not bricked!

My phone (model 1007) had been rooted and running Serendipity. All was well until I had trouble with phone calls. So I unrooted and reflashed to stock. I reformatted and it was like brand new, out the box. I didn't have the time to reroot so I kept it clean. I pressed on 'update' on the settings menu (was that stupid of me?) and it just shut down. So NOW,
I can't turn it on! My phone starts to turn on but just shows this little spinning circle and the screen goes black. I can get into download and recovery though, so that's good right?
The phone will only charge. The very FEW times I actually got it to turn on the phone said that the USB was connected when it wasn't!
Could someone please, please help me?
Also, this is a phone from the warranty dept. It's refurbished because my other Captivate wouldn't turn on (I'm just having some sucky luck, right?)
So am I still able to return it? It's been less than 90 days i got it and has never been in contact with water or dropped. In fact, I always cradle it in a nice case.
I'm just terrified of the horror stories I've heard about Samsung warranty dept and AT&T's warranty dept. I don't want to give it to them to have some crazy $500 charge, you know? I think I don't have anything to worry about but it just freaked me out.
I had a similar experience, but mine caught itself in a reboot loop. I wa able to get back into download mode and re-flash, fixing the issue.
Have you tried to see if it will at least go into download mode?

The OTA update ATT sent out has been known to cause these issues on some phones, Here are your 2 options. 1. Return it and get another referb. 2. Go down to your local Radio shack and get the parts for a jig, (directions in the forums. A search for Jig will get you there) and then not worry about much flashing roms from then as a Jig will work 99.9% of the time.
That is of course after you see if you can get into download mode without the jig.
lol I've tried jigs before. I suck at making them and it never worked for me. Clearly, I've been too sloppy in making them. I can get into download mode. But I've already reflashed with the same results. If I keep getting the same results I'm afraid someone will tell me I have a hardware issue.
Is the jig the only thing left to try?
Thanks soooo much for replying!

Ok you can get into download mode so you should be ok. What have you been flashing?
#1 dont need a jig - just 3 resistors
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10112309&postcount=1
HINT dont touch the resistor leads with your bare fingers, it can change the resistance, especially if youre sweaty. USE TAPE on the ends
#2 if you dont think you can do that, you can buy a premade jig on ebay DELIVERED for under 10 bucks, i just ordered one for 8 just in case.
