I upgraded my 2.1 to 2.2 on Captivate. Since then, wifi is in an always on state. Earlier on 2.1 wifi used to turn off when phone used to go sleep mode for some time. Now on 2.2, even if i wake the up the phone after like an hour of being in sleep, I notice that the wifi is still on.
And this always-on mode of wifi is killing the battery!
Anyone who could clear this up, without using any apps like juice defender?

Go into wifi settings - when there hit the menu button and you have the option for advanced settings - there you have the option to set wifi sleep policy.

damn! i feel like a stupid for forgetting something so very basic! thanks a bunch buddy
Hi,
When the phone is locked ( pressing down the button on the top of the phone) does the wifi still run in the background?
I'm thinking it is, because soon as I turn it back on the wifi icon is still displayed, meaning that it hasn't turned off.
Is that correct, and is there a way to have it automatically turn off ( like say the iphones) when the phone is locked?.
Thanks
You can set the WiFi sleep policy under wireless settings (advanced), if that helps
There isn't an option to turn it off when in sleep mode, just the following
after 15 mins
never when plugged in
never
Ok, then try settings profiles from the market, you can set that up to do exactly what you are wanting
I have that installed but I am having trouble getting it to turn off wifi when in standby mode.Would you know what to do?
Thanks
Set a new rule up with a condition set for 'screen status' off, and action set for WiFi off. Do another rule for screen status on, WiFi on. I think you may need to buy the full version to allow more than one profile.
There is no 'wifi off' option when i click on add action.
There's only
activate profile
run application
notify
pause
plugin defined.
Make a profile with WiFi set to off, then add an action to activate that profile. I'm doing this from memory so can't be exact with instructions, you need to experiment a bit, it is definately possible to do what you need.
Ok, I think I done it now. Thanks a lot for all your help.I appreciate it.
Alright, I know some have had an issue with their Wi-Fi sleeping when the screen turns off. There is an easy fix to this issue...
From the home screen press menu the go to settings, from there go to wireless settings and press menu, go to advanced, you will see Wi-Fi sleep policy, change to Never.
Now you will stay connected to Wi-Fi when your screen turns off.

Great find m8. *thumbs up*

I so wish that was the fix I was looking for. My Wifi goes in and out with the screen off, and sometimes even on, DESPITE being Never Sleep. Only since update to 2.2. 1.6 worked fine all the time.
noticed wifi turns off after a certain period when the xt860 is inactive or ot used for a while.
Noticed that you actually have to go into wifi setting and it begins to scan and connects. I have the phone set to performance mode but don't get why it turns wifi off.

How about settings->wireless & networks->Wi-Fi settings. Menu->advanced->Wi-Fi sleep policy. If it is not already, set it to never.
ahh thanks i knew there was a setting in wifi setting, just forgot you had to hit the menu key
Okay. I noticed today that when pressed the power button to wake my phone from sleep the wifi or 3g (depending on where i was and what I was connected to, ie home or away) icon was not showing and thus indicating that it wasn't connected. Hmm, I thought it was odd, maybe it was a display error. But I then noticed that my emails and gmails all came through a few seconds after I unlocked the phone (and the connection icon appeared) and that they had all been sent whilst the phone was asleep. So, it seems to me that the phone is disconnecting from any data source when it goes into sleep mode. Now, I am right in thinking that the whole point of push notifications or setting your email to sync every 5 minutes is that the phone will remain connected even whilst asleep, and then wake up (briefly even) when it picks up an email?
I had no power saver on, no smart sync, wifi set to never sleep. Is this normal? It's pretty important that I get my emails as and when they sent to me. Any advice would be great. I am wondering if it's a bug, and whether I need to take to the phone back to exchange for another one?

you're sure power saver in the top menu wasn't on? because that's what it does, turns off wifi and data when the screen is off for an expended period.
maybe cycle it on and off a couple of times and see if the problem persists...

No, isn't normal.
So, can you upgrade to the latest firmware and, maybe, do a full wipe?
Did you install some app for battery?
And check that your power saver isn't on...
Check under power, setting that sleep mode is off. That on by default on mine. It turns data off after extended screen of time and doesn't require the power save to be activated.

Hmm, no additional battery apps, power saving toggled and definitely off (I purposefully turned it off because of it's data management policy), and sleep mode set to off.
So, I'm right in thinking that you/others actually get notifications then? and wifi/3g is working fine? Looks like it's a return and hope that the next one works (I only got the phone 7days ago). My software update says no updates available, though this is likely to be EE fault. If I can get the shop to exchange I might just do that. Ho hum, another 3 hours setting the thing up again then...
It seems to be a Wifi switching itself off problem...

So, a quick update in case anyone else is having this problem.
I reset the phone to see if it would make a difference and it kind of has. Now I have noticed that if I am using mobile data it's fine. Things are pushed, notifications come through. But if I use Wifi it's a different matter.
it seems that with Wifi on and connected then it works for around 15 minutes when the phone is sleeping (I have done a few tests). After this it seems to shut wifi down and hence no notifications. So it would seem to me that although Power Saving is set to OFF, and Sleep mode (ie no data in sleep) is set to OFF, the phone is still disconnecting from WIfi regardless of the settings. Which is a bit frustrating as I don't want to be connected to the mobile network all the time, especially at home, but still want to know if I receive emails.
Anyone else experienced this Wifi switching itself off issue (and then switching itself on as soon as you manually wake the phone?)? I have to decide whether to return the phone for a replacement or not. If this is a wide ranging issue it might not be worth it - though I'd have thought a simply thing, like keeping wifi on at all times wouldn't be hard to make sure it worked.
there are a few apps available on the play store such as "keep wifi alive" which might do the trick.

Okay, now I feel a bit of Doughnut! I think I've found out what was causing this. So, even though I had Power Saver OFF, Smartsync OFF, Sleep Mode (disconnect data whilst sleep) OFF, I hadn't had a proper look in the Wifi settings, and under Advanced I found:
Advanced>Keep Wifi on during Sleep. This hadn't been set to Always and was set to 'Only when plugged in'. So, changed to 'Always' and now it seems to work (and that would explain why I got emails through the night when charging).
So, apart from feeling a little red-faced for not exploring every single menu available, I am happy it (seems) sorted. If anyone has wifi dropping whilst phone is sleeping it seems there are four steps:
SmartSync = OFF [in Mail app]
Power Saver = OFF [in status bar and Power Settings]
Sleep Mode = OFF [in Power Settings]
Keep Wifi on during Sleep = Always [in Wifi>Advanced Settings]
Hopefully this'll help anyone else who has been having a bit of prolonged blond moment with the phone settings. {retreats to corner}

I have similar problem. Even when I have everything OFF as you suggest, I get disconnected a second after screen goes off. When I turn phone back on, I can see that wifi is on, but all aps are off and wont connect again. I have to turn wifi off and on and applications like skype go again online. I have this problem at home and also at work on corporate network. I have even tried apps that should keep wifi on, but with no change.
Interesting is that after the phone goes to sleep mode, I can see that speed of wifi is changing on phone. The phone actualy stays connected to wifi, but doesn't send or receive data.
The router at home is TP-Link 1043ND with DD-WRT (flashed to last firmware to see if it fixes this problem). I'm not sure what brand and type are corporate APs, but could be some cisco or similar.
Any advice what else I could try?
