"unrevoked: A warning: the SkyRaider for the inc has a higher then average chance of causing "USB bricked" devices, we will try to work on a fix."

Sheesh man! That is scary! Makes me feel like one of those people who come home and find out that the bank they were at an hour ago got robbed ten minutes later!
The tweet has nothing to do with unrevoked's releases.
The skyraider rom appears to use a slightly broken update-binary. When you flash skyraider rom, it writes stuff to misc that it shouldn't, as far as I can tell. This may cause a USB brick (ie, phone is not accessible via USB)
I didnt know for sure what it meant. Just thought I'd share it. I havnt had problems connecting via usb
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
So don't use SkyRaider 2.2 from 8/5? I was literally seconds away from doing this...
Is this "USB Brick" something that can be reversed with a Nandroid restore if I decide to take my chances?
It sounds to me like it's an issue with running Unrevoked after you've already installed SkyRaider. I haven't seen any posts in the 231 page SkyRaider thread that report their phone was USB-bricked.
How would that make sense though, like if you are running a ROM you are already rooted, why run unrevoked again?

Any ideas on what the criteria would be for this to happen? Is it the process of flashing, our can this happen through a certain process while running the rom?

Then why have so many people not had issues with SkyRaider bricking their phones? So far the only place I've heard this is from the unrevoked team and plenty of people are apparently not having the issue at all.
I'm certainly not saying you're wrong—you're more knowledgable than me—but a lot of us are curious as to why this is suddenly an issue even though unrevoked is the only one who's had it happen. If it's because of unreleased software by unrevoked then what was the point in tweeting, since everyone who has it would be able to be contacted personally?

Unrevoked never said that it would definately brick your phone. They said it has a "higher than avarage chance of USB bricking due to a broken update-binary"
I've personally never had problems with sky raider, but then again, I haven't used adb in a while, and I use card reader to mount my sd, so this wouldn't affect me that much

Fact:
Without unrevoked we still might not have root.
Fact:
There is no known issue among the general public (us) of SkyRaider bricking the usb. Its possible this has happened to 1 or 2 people sure, but that would be a very isolated incedent and does not mean its a common or uncommon bug - more like so super rare none of us have heard about it.
Now you said in your tweet:
unrevoked: A warning: the SkyRaider for the inc has a higher then average chance of causing "USB bricked" devices, we will try to work on a fix

Has a higher than average chance.
this leads me to believe that if the chance is .5 now its .6 - again not making it common.
we will try to work on a fix

Now maybe its just me but trying to fix something that you didnt break wouldnt that be considered taking responsibility for whats wrong??
Why would you not contact ihtfp69 about this directly? Sorry to say but your tweet is not very tactful and is now causing panic across multiple boards.
Just a word of advice, before basically saying, hey this ROM could break your ****, maybe in the future talk with the dev of the ROM before causing a panic..
Not trying to bash ya, just dont want unneeded panic especially for someone who has done a great job like ihtfp69 in creating a great ROM for us all to use.
btw thanks for the root!!!!!

I'm sorry if I implied they did, but "higher than average" doesn't explain much.
Again, plenty of people never had this issue. It'd be nice for a bit more clarification instead of worrying a lot of current/future SkyRaider users without further explanations of how it happens…

This is basically what I'm trying to say, but perhaps it's not coming across that well. If it's a very rare bug then the tweet could have been worded differently, or linked to more information.
Its not about running the rom now, its about how the next unrevoked will brick if you use it with this rom.
"@theozzeh After talking with @koush, we've determined that the "SkyRaider" rom is going to be a major bricking risk with the next unrevoked release."

Thank you! I hadn't seen that tweet, and which goes back to my (sorta?) original question: if it's not an issue with a current release then why is there a need to panic everyone?
So what is the consensus on this info? Important or not? Does it need to be here in development?
OP can you update the first post with what we've gathered and what this all means?
Thanks

Im not sure its made to panic everyone .. just informative if we are running skyraider which I am we have to be careful with the new version of unrevoked ... which we must use if we want the new version of cwm
I installed the latest vanilla skyraider, didn't like it so I wiped it and then put on the aiccus ROM. When I attach my phone to my computer it will not bring up the SD card or internal storage in my computer. Instead it brings up a CD drive. In the USB tray icon it still shows two removable disks and the CD drive does skip the letters that were assigned to those two drives. I can still take screenshots of the phone using the SDK.
I think this is the brick, if it's not I'd appreciate someone telling me how I can get my computer to recognize the phone again.
If its an update binary issue, then the author of SKyRaider merely needs to replace it, or remove it, as we don't really need the binary in the first place.
Thank You All
I took the plunge this morning and decided to jump in with both feet, and am now running the custom rom Cyanogen 6.0 RC-1 recommended here. This is a blast, and nowhere as difficult as what I thought it would be (believe me though..I was sweating bullets when I hit enter )
Without all the good information here I don't think I would have ever been able to do this myself.
I don't know what to do next, but it seems like everything, including my [email protected]& red haze on my camera is gone too...I am real happy camper now
OK guys..what to do next now. What should I download and install on here since it's a clean slate.

Glad we could help -- that's why we're here
Well, don't feel like you NEED to do anything next. But I'll offer a couple general suggestions.
1) Browse around the Themes and Apps section. There are lots of cool themes, apps, mods, etc. that you could add that provide even further customization and additional functionality. Also consider browsing around the Development forum to see if you might like to try any of the other ROMs out for a bit.
2) Think of what else do YOU want your phone to be able to do? Think of some things you'd like to see out of your phone. Then start searching around here, or in the Market, and see if such an app/mod already exists or if someone here is working on it.
Basically, you don't NEED to do anything next, but just know that you can do plenty of exploring here for all kinds of stuff, and you now have the ability to customize further.

I did manage to download the gapps and flashed that (starting to feel pretty good ) and will check out what you suggested as well. I can't get over how much faster this phone is now and love the os typewriter over the stock one. I only made 20 mistakes with it first time typing on it instead of 200 I usually do with the stock one
I can't wait to show this puppy off tonight at work to the Evo boys...I'm going to have a nice laugh back at them when they see it now, since a bunch of them were putting my "putzy" little Hero down last night. That really was one hell of a motivating factor for me to do this BTW I would love to get that matrix type start up screen on this today...if I can keep me eyes open long enough..(graveyard shift) especially if it will work right, that aught to blow their little minds ehh..

I still don't have it down pat and am not 100% comfortable doing any of it,but if your wanting to try it sooner or later your going to have to jump in and get your feet wet too..
Yes..the Blue tooth works with my older Platronic's headset very well. That's as much as I have done with it. I don't have any of the external speakers or use it through any radio in the car..sorry.

There's nothing to really do next because everything is all user preference. I would suggest you download Titanium Backup from the market and backup all your apps+data so you don't lose anything if something goes wrong. Also, do nandroid backups prior to make modifications to your phone. What I did when I first started was just read, read, and read. There's so much to do and the members of XDA are very supportive. Welcome to our world. LOL
Step by step?
So for a newbie, can you post the step-by-step things you did to root and update your phone?
Like people say do nandroid, and I have not a clue where to get that.
Thanks,

The search feature and Google are really a good tools to use here and on the web.You will be pleasantly surprised at all of the information you can come up with.
Now..a step by step guide to rooting my phone..No..like I said..I am still not 100% comfortable doing this yet,and I just don't feel I am qualified enough to explain the process to you..sorry
I will give you some good advise though..RESEARCH RESEARCH..and then RESEARCH what you are wanting to do to your phone..before you do anything at all. I spent a whole bunch of hours reading everything from here and elsewhere just trying to get a good idea of what to do before doing anything..and you should too.
1) Figure out what exactly you want from your phone and decide then before you do anything.
2) Take a look at all of the different Rom's that are available and what each offer you, and while your looking at them and reading about them you should be looking at all of the issues each have and decide if you can live with them before you do anything.
3) Use the search feature here and Google. You'll have hundreds of hours of reading at your finger tips to digest. Sure..you'll have more questions then answers right off the bat,but keeping researching and you will most likely find enough stuff to help you understand the process enough to jump in eventually.
It really isn't difficult to root you phone anymore nor is it difficult to do a nandroid back up but you need to put forth some effort to have a basic understanding of what you are wanting to do and what all the terminology means.. Sorry if this sounds condescending to you, I'm not trying to be in any way, but this is just some friendly advise from one newbie to another.
4) Once you got a good idea of what you would like to try,and a basic idea of what the terminology means, then get comfortable hooking your phone up to the computer and see what happens on it.Look up here or elsewhere what it means to do a nandroid back up..and also backing up a sd card to your computer..Look at what it means to wipe the data and making a partition on your sd card. Once your familiar with all of this...then go look at the universal 1 click method to root your phone and then also look at the guide to rooting your phone via the a terminal that is posted on this forum and what has been said about both of them. See what your comfortable with. Now once you done all of this.. go look the instructions each of the chef's give with their Roms, and see if it starts making sense to you or not. You will need to follow these instructions word for word to make it work right the first time you try this....same for using the long way to root via a terminal too..
If you do your homework and still can't figure out what it all means..then in all reality you really shouldn't try it..at least not till you at least understand it..This is how I did it..and my suggestion to you is to do the same. I know the terminology is strange and it may seem overwhelming at first..but if you spend enough time researching it,it will help you in the long run.

You are now on the slippery slope of obsessive tweaking!
I was just like you...sweating over taking the plunge. But once I put my toes in the water, it was all in all the way!
I started with CM6 RC1...after a couple weeks, I flashed CM nightly 9/7 and saw improvement. Just yesterday I flashed Darc's #14 kernel. AWESOME... more speed....more zippiness. I LOVE my Hero
Don't load up a bunch of crap. You don't need task killers and such. I did pop #2 for SetCPU and run my Hero very nicely at 729mhz. Can you say "zing"?

Hmmm, well if I am gonna have to wipe for this I may as well SBF back and get the official OTA.
Seems pretty decent so far. My linpak and quadrant scores are even with what I was getting with the OTA after getting rid of some bloat. Calendar fix hasn't fixed my sync issue yet. Any idea why when I post my scores to linpak my notes show build 2.2.20? I'm not familiar with that particular version. Phone info shows 2.3.15 as it should but this is obviously not built off the official 2.2 as I've notice certain things change back to leak versions.
I'll give this rom a few days but I'm probably heading back to the OTA.
Can someone share the stock backup assistant apk with me? I'm lazy enough that I was just using that instead of a3rd party app so now I'm missing a HUGE chunk of my contacts. If it can't be used on this rom I'm doingan sbf right away when I get home.

There is in fact a difference. Newer Baseband and New Kernel which results in better performance. These two objects were left out of the leak for fear of it leading back to the leaker.

Happened to me...flash the rom zip following the instructions. Reboot the phone. Then bootstrap and reboot back into recovery and flash the calendarfix zip from page 7 of this thread: http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-roms/8428-rom-rubix-focused-0-3-a-7.html
I had this instaled but could'nt get google maps to work so I went back to flyx rom. The market is stuck downloading google maps I hit cancel and it has force closed

I also had some FC problems. It FC's everytime you try to stop a download in the market. It FC's every time you click on the battery manager to see what's sucking juice and it FC'd when messing around with the Calendar.
Because of those reasons, plus not being any faster than I had gotten my OTA after bloatware removal and some build.prop tweaks, not being able to use Backup Assistant (losing 80% of my contacts) and the fact that I actually like the native 2.2 txt app led me back to my OTA 2.2 through the nandroid backup I made before installing rubiX.
This is one I will definitely keep an eye on and will be testing in further revisions, but it's not where I want a rom to be right now.
I appreciate all the hard work that went into it but it's just not for me right now.

I'm Derek Rodriguez (thats my full name), and have honestly barely conversed with jake. He was nice enough to let me host my files through his ftp alongside with Boostdscoob (dominator/eliminator roms for d1) when we were collaborating for roms, and still lets me. Jake is a great guy from what I know of him, and makes pretty bad ass kernels.
It's hosted there, as well as alldroid, and androiddoes.net.
arlan_jacob, a reboot might of fixed it. I chose not to include market apps with how fast updates have been coming out lately, didn't wanna leave any behind and people not able to update correctly. Sorry about the issue, I'll make an update.zip with the market apps included if it'd help out.

Kk...thanks for clearing that up.
Lol...and my name is Blair, nice to meet ya and kudos for the ROM ...any future plans?
Cheers!
Hello everyone, first post I'm an android noob, I love gadgets and cell phones, but am not computer savvy. I am almost ready to flash my first ROM onto my captivate, which is currently running android 2.1 update 1, OCLF v2.2+ Donate Version, autokiller, autostarts, and has touchwiz and Launcher Pro Plus (launcher pro is the default skin), but before I flash to a new ROM, I want to make sure I'm doing everything right to minimize the possibility of bricking my captivate. I think that is all the relevant information but let me know if there is anything else I should mention... I LOVE LOVE LOVE my captivate and I'm a teacher with more debt than income so I would really be quite sad if it bricks.
OK here's the rundown!
Clockwork Recovery
I don't really understand the different versions of Clockwork Recovery, but I know that I have *some* form/version of it on my captivate. I rooted using RyanZA's OCLF (MAJOR props to him; his app made me me fall in love with my phone/android in general) which I *think* made me get Clockwork Recovery, or maybe it was busybox. About a month ago I downloaded Titanium Backup, which I also *think* made me download Clockwork Recovery. Then I deleted TB about an hour later because at the time I didn't have any use for it (although I guess perhaps now I should get it back). Most recently I downloaded the "pro" or "full" or something version of ROM Manager (what a great app, I'm surprised something so essential isn't already part of android. I forked out the 5 bucks because, like RyanZA, the dev deserves the props if you can afford it, but nothing other than "free stuff" appears in the "download ROM" section, which sounded super convenient, and was supposed to come with the paid version... anyone know why this might be?), and I know for sure that I installed/downloaded/? Clockwork onto my phone through the ROM manager because I just did it like two days ago. --> OK I Just went into ROM Manager to look at it again and it says "current recovery: Clockwork Mod 2.5.1.2"
Anyway the reason I'm asking about this is because I remember reading a couple of different articles that said something like "make sure you have the right version of clockwork before you flash to a new ROM or you will brick your phone and you will never be happy and nobody will ever love you." However I might be thinking about busybox? which brings me to:
Busybox
To be honest I never even really understood what exactly busybox is but I think I read somewhere that, like clockwork, it said something like "make sure you have the right version of clockwork before you flash to a new ROM or you will brick your phone." I do not know if I have it on my phone or not, much less what version.
OCLF v2.2 Donate
So I am going to undo the lagfix, but not undo the root that came with the OCLF app that came with the app because I need it to stay rooted. Is this a problem? I switched the scheduler back to "cfq" because that was what it used to be, but I used "deadline" before I started planning the ROM flash. Fun fact: I have no clue what any of that means, but boy did it make things speedy
Which ROM?
I know this has been asked before and I know it comes down to preference, but given the information about the current state of my phone, is there a particular ROM that you would suggest? If that doesn't make sense, what I mean to say is, does anyone know if, for example, people who have at any point used a lag fix are predisposed to bricking their phone during a flash, or if people who run Clockwork Recovery can't use ROM x?
The biggest things that concern me are 1. stability 2. that the ROM is still supported 3. froyo 4. easy sync/integration with everything google (mail, maps, calendar, etc). I like a clean, elegant look and feel, but I imagine I can skin whatever ROM to my liking. I am leaning towards Cognition, simply because I seem to read that one the most often.
Thank you for any help, it is greatly appreciated
Any other advice out there or links to good guides would be great too
oh hey sorry one more thing, as long as I'm asking noob questions: I know that live wallpapers drain battery but I love the earth one with a black background, looks so damn good. Anyway does it drain the battery CONSTANTLY as long as it's the wallpaper or only when you're on the home screens and can actually see it?
thanks again guys!
Hello everyone, first post I'm an android noob, I love gadgets and cell phones, but am not computer savvy.

Don't be afraid of your phone. Just don't be stupid about it. READ EVERYTHING.

ClockworkMod comes to you via Rom Manager. The reason you don't see the list of downloadable roms is.... they ain't none for that list. There are a few Roms, but they are not subscribed (or whatever) to that service. You gotta get 'em here from their respective threads in xda.

You'll need the root actually to get anywhere at first so yeah, disable the lagfix but leave the root.

Try them all! They all have their plus and minus. I like cognition, but I've tried Deviant and CDE too. Only way to know what ya like best is take a bite of each.

Make sure you can do the 3 button thing to get into recovery or download modes. As far as I know that's the only way you can really 'brick" your phone. Some cappy's can't do any 3 button combos from power off. This is bad as you can't get out of the loop into recovery. DesignGears has a post about this, with a fix if you have this issue. Find it, Read it, Know it. And stuff.
Get the androidSDK and learn about abd. Sometimes this can get you out of trouble when nothing else can. There are tons of references to it in xda and google will get you a ton of reading material. Beyond a single post in scope to explain that one. Here's a start: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
Familiarize yourself with Odin and Odin One-Click. Not sure where to point you there as I found my info slogging through the cognition beast...err... thread. Pretty sure you can find a couple threads by DesignGears in development that will get you the programs and get you started.

I dunno that!
OK, well first off, thanks Sulphur. Bummer I can't use ROM Manager to download new ROMs, that would make things even easier.

Damn it's a good thing you said that. I just tried it to make sure that I could go into recovery mode... I always assumed that I could...
I seem to be one of those people that can't go into recovery mode using the three button press method. What's worse is that I have a mac so I (think) I can't use odin either.
Does this mean I can't fix my phone is it soft bricks while flashing? I can't take that risk...
*sniff*
people say cognition is so cool too...
Go on the development section. There is a fix for the there button issue and cog roms keep it intact
Sent telepathically using vulcan mind meld app.

Dang. That sucks. Did you look for DesignGears thread on the 3 button issue? There's another one another guy posted but I don't remember who.
No Odin is bad yeah, if you soft brick. You can look at Heimdale (link to it on the Cognition DL page here). But it sounds fairly complicated. Might be fun just to figure it out and seein' as you're on mac it may be your only option. No idea where to send you to learn how to use it tho, just know that it can be used on a Mac.
Good luck to ya!

Based on what I read, it seems like I need odin to apply the fix though, right? Thanks though!

Thanks for pointing that out! It's WAY beyond my modest computer knowledge (I was using Terminal and typing in Unix commands, I'm sure it was all totally amateur, but I felt like such a computer bad-ass ), but now I actually have an option, where before I had none! Thanks!!
As an IT professional, I truly hate looking like an idiot. And I'm pretty sure that's about to happen. But I'm sincerely at the end of my rope, and don't know what else to do.
I've been using my Nexus 6 for over a year and a half now, and I love it. I'm comfortable using WugFresh and recently flashed the 7.1.1 OTA using it. However, I also like using Android Pay, so I don't want to root. I do however want full Google Now integration in Action Launcher 3, now that it's available. I really, really want that.
So I looked into Magisk, and that seems to be the way to go. The problem is that the installation instructions seem inherently contradictory. First, they say you need to revert to stock (does that mean stock 7.1.1 or stock after FDR, btw?). But in the very next step, they tell you to flash Magicsk using TWRP. Huh? How is a custom recovery like TWRP considered stock? I just don't get it.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying my best here, so please don't flame. I used to be comfortable with rooting and ROMing back in the OG Droid days, but as I said, I enjoy Android Pay and my banking app, etc.
Thanks in advance for some clear, non-contradictory instructions.

Well first let me give you some advise. If those apps are important to you then get used to running stock. Google is tighting the grip more and more and very soon you will have to choose. Either having root or using many apps like banking apps and google pay. Cant blame them really.
Now When they say stock then mean bare stock. Full factory wipe (formatting all partitions. Yes you will lose data) then put TWRP on there and go from there.
On a side not. You do yourself a great dis-service by using the tool kit. Make me wonder about the IT professional statement, no true IT person would let something reprogram their equipment without knowing everything that is going on as it happens.

Kind of what I figured, and why I haven't rooted since my Droid Bionic.

So in other words, the correct instructions should be:
1) Perform a Factory Data Reset
2) Flash TWRP
3) Flash Magisk using TWRP

So clearly you ignored my request not to flame. My IT job takes up enough of my time and mental resources that I have no problem using shortcuts like WugFresh as long as (a) I know how to do it manually if needed, and (b) I trust the utility. So tired of seeing this lazy insult. Not everyone has time to type out ADB commands all day long. But thanks for insinuating I'm not a "true IT person" because I prefer not to do so.
Now that I understand what is actually involved, I will just stay stock.

No need to do a factory reset. The installation instructions state you should restore your BOOT image to stock, nothing else. You can use a custom kernel though (I've been using Franco for some time) and there the recommendation is to flash it before Magisk.
So, in other words, skip step 1.
Edit: But of course, you'll need an unlocked bootloader and if you don't have that already your data will be wiped when unlocking. So... step 1 might be necessary... Oops.

And see that is where you not wanting to put the time in is starting to bite you. doing a facotry reset isnt really a full clean wipe. You have to format the partitions.
If you dont have the time then you really shouldnt be doing something that could easily leave you with a bricked device and with no one to blame but yourself as you didnt want to take the time to understand what you are doing.
As to what I said. It wasnt flaming it was simple blunt honesty. I know people are not used to that as everyone tries so hard to be PC and not hurt other peoples feelings. Well that is not how things work here. Here you will get honest answers. Might not be answers you like but that is not really something to worry about.
I wasnt insinuating anything. I cant tell you that most the older members of this site are in IT and have been for longer then smartphones have been around. The yare also the ones that tell people not to use them for the simple matter of not knowing how to fix things if something went wrong or even what went wrong at all.

Yes, sadly I think you are right about this. I have decided to remain stock 7.1.1. The thing I will never understand is why Google chose to make Google Now launcher integration dependent upon the launcher being a system app? I can already have that feature if I use the Google Now launcher which is part of the stock image, but for various aesthetic reasons I just can't stand it. I get that they want to sell Pixels, but honestly I can't stand the Pixel launcher either, due to the ugly icons, so even if I shelled out the price of a desktop computer for a phone that lacks wireless charging, stereo speakers, and water resistance, I still would be stuck not being able to have Google Now integration with my preferred Action Launcher 3. Why? Google's entire business model is based on people using their search engine and seeing their ads, so why on earth wouldn't they want as many people as possible to use Google Now? Plus I can already access it in multiple different ways, they just all suck because it doesn't stay resident in RAM, causing stuttering and delays. If they would just remove that stupid restriction then people like me wouldn't feel the need to root at all, thereby compromising the security of the device which is so important to them, and it would be a win-win all around. Google used to be smarter than this ... what the hell happened? /rant
Thank you Didgeridoohan for your polite and helpful reply. It is truly appreciated. Glad to know there are still kind people to be found on XDA.
My willingness to use ADB commands vs. a root toolkit had absolutely nothing to do with my question. But some people just can't resist any opportunity to display their smug superiority.

He wasn't flaming... Take 2 minutes to learn ADB and fastboot commands and don't rely on some gimmick toolkit. and it will go a long way. For an "it professional" or even anyone relatively familiar with computers this won't be a hard task. If you're messing with your phone you NEED to know how to do this. Don't cry foul when someone points this out.
