Okay, so I rooted and installed Cyanogen earlier; what cool things can I do with root?
Also, wow. My phone feels so much more responsive now. Just an aside.

Currently using Cyanogen. There a list of apps for root or anything? That's really what I'm looking for.
Quick post: themes. Where do I get them? Are they the morphs in the themes and apps section?
Go to the themes section and read the morphs threads. Install metamorph from the market and go to town. I spent days with new black status bars, battery icons, etc. Check for black matte, or desire icons, its so nice.

Gotcha. Thanks!
to the OP
you know you will have a much shorter list if you refraised the title "list of things that you CANT do when rooted". being rooted lets you do anything you could want on a android phone.

True. I'm just wondering if there's a list of apps, common things to do, etc.
Also: Metamorph doesn't seem to be working for me? Trying to apply BlackMatte and it has been sitting on res-framework.apk for hours now.

You know the first time I tried to apply with metamorph it sat there forever, and I thought I did something wrong. I forced it closed, reboot, and then tried again and it worked.

Ah, should've thought of that. One more question: what app is it that puts a notification with battery temp, health, etc in the tray?
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
Well battery life widget is what many use, which puts temp, voltage, and percentage on a widget. Make sure you enable extended info in its settings.
I don't like the battery running in notification bar. I like a clean running status bar, so a home screen widget is better for me.
If you use cyanogen, percentage goes right over top of the battery icon itself.

I found the notification one, which I like except it places a second battery icon in the notification bar, instead of just the tray. I like the info in the tray though. Anything similar to that out there?

yeah well there is one that will put it in your notification bar, but i forget the name. and cyanogen puts the percentage on the actual batery icon. its in spare parts in the cyanogen ROM.

Is there any way easily to get rid of the clock and the battery icon in the top status bar? Those are the only two i'd like to hide, because of Beautiful Widgets and BattStat there's no reason to have them up there anymore.
Thanks!

If you're using LauncherPro, you can hide the whole top taskbar. I don't know about just the clock and battery icons

I'd like to know this as well. It seems like it's a trivial thing to do with CyanogenMod + Spare Parts, and also supposedly easier with 2.2 (and who knows when we'll get that....).
I've seen a few hacks that basically move its position off the screen, but I was hoping for something a little more elegant than that.
For the battery icon, I just replaced it with one that's actually useful.
My googlefu seems to be failing me at the moment so I can't link you to that hack. It's somewhere on these forums though.
I'm very new to android dev/hacking and I hope this is acceptable conduct (taking someone else's theme and putting a different spin on it) but I really liked Frost Remix NexTheme but I wanted a different battery notification icon, updated charging icons and thanks to some prodding from ludeboy, I felt the default settings text should be changed so I made my own spin on a theme which I'm posting here for your using pleasure.
Change Log...
10/2/2010
Theme Frost Remix from 9/27/2010 (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788294)
Changed secondary text from baby blue to green
Replaced battery icons and updated charging icons from "D" variant of Fightspit's Super Circle Battery mod (Thanks for porting s44 - forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791886&page=3)
As soon as a figure out how to turn this theme into a rom I will and I'll get that posted but for the time being, here I have attached the framework-res and twframework-res.
To install - copy both files to your system/framework folder and restart your phone.
****This has been tested on my phone and works fine but as always - use at your own risk but let me know if you run into any problems...and always back up your originals ******
Big Thanks to ludeboy for the request to identify what xmls to change for color mods (I'm fairly up to speed on how the theme engine works), frostman88 for the initial theme and s44 for porting over the battery mod!
Works great bud! Just installed it and love it. Any way you can make the battery indicator, wifi meter, vibrate phone "lines", and the icons from the pull down menu when selected the same green as the text? I have a green type theme going on and would love it all to match. If not its cool since I have my notification bar hidden on home screen anyways but figured I could ask. Thanks for your work.

I'll look into that - I like the green on black and do also currently like the green thing going on. I'm going to do some more tinkering but my creative is lacking from a graphical standpoint so if anyone has great ideas - If I like them I'll look at them and either roll another flavor or build it into what I have here.

Short Answer -
framework-res.apk\res\color-hdpi\zzz_tw_secondary_text_sub.xml
framework-res.apk\res\color\zzz_tw_secondary_text_sub.xml
(I think the first file is the only file that actually had to be modified but the second file was a few steps of color different from the first so I just modified both of them)
Long Answer -
It took me a little time to get familiar with how the themeing (styles, layouts, etc) worked but I think I have a pretty good handle on this. To figure out what controlled the text color I dumped the settings.apk, identified the layouts and styles, traced the styles backwards until I worked my way back into the framework-res.apk and then located that it was pointing to the color file of zzz_tw_secondary_text_sub
I spent about 5 hours digging but now knowing the how the colors, layout and styles work I could most likely have done it in 15 minutes.
Ah right, you know I saw it pointed to a specific color, like color1, color2, color3, but I had been up for about 19 hours with 5 hours of sleep and really did not feel like trying to trace it back to whatever else apk.
So overall I had about 30 min to dig through the xmls.
Darn, I'm so peeved right now. In the time it took for you to post this up,
I went and Odin Restored my phone, re-clean deodex + aosp'ed it,
used the Black Mod theme in Metamorph,
and then applied the D Circle Battery,
and backed it up like 5 times. If i'd have seen this sooner, it would have saved me so much time
Thanks for this. I really like Frostman's theme, but I did want the circle battery indicator, and I also really like the green text.
Works good. I like the green and the battery. Thanks

I copied the battery mod into the System/framework folder, first, and it borked my wallpaper back to the underwater live wallpaper, and then I kept getting FCs when I tried to open Root Explorer again. After I restarted, I was able to get the other file in, using Root Explorer, and I was able to reset my wallpaper. Nothing big, but I thought you might like to know.

Thanks - I am guessing that could be something to do with root explorer possibly. I do not use root explorer and currently am doing all my pushes using adb. I'll look at root explorer and see if I can explain what happened (guessing maybe a dependency thing but who knows).

good day.
i find so many of them, but jest wonder who is the best apps that show the current battery percent, in the task bar or widget...
I actually use extended controls. It's a widget that looks like the standard android Power Control widget. You can customize it to have loads of controls and the battery percentage. I can't remember how much it is in the market, but its definitely worth it.

If there's a full root we could modify the framework-res.apk and get a modified battery icon in the notification bar. Way better..
My favorite: BattStatt. It's a widget for your screen. Has various sizes, and shows your battery in words.
Try BatteryIndicator
SwitchPro also does it, and worth getting anyway.
try this,
press screen or enter personalize,
chooseshortcut
then
settings
then
battery use
basic but good

I second this. Very simplistic and nice. Customizable so you can choose a color that suits your current background. Along with Tajm you'll have a nice clean setup on home screen or lock screen (Widgetlocker ($1.99) allows you to put widgets on the lockscreen along with custom sliders. I recommend a looksy).

Thanks from me too, it's great, just what I wanted!
BTW, as I said on the other thread, I just wonder if this (kind of) software could shorten battery life, having to do its duties to refresh all the time?

From the linked topic:
- the Circular Battery Indicator does not use a lot of battery resources, the device broadcasts a message when the battery status changes, the app catches this broadcast and update itself to show the right percentage, it is as simple as that, so it is extremely light weight on the CPU.
Click to collapse
Oops, thanks, seems like I was a bit too lazy
I had read about the existence of this 'broadcast' system elsewhere, but I was worried because before of this app I used a widget (BatteryIcon if I remember) that had a 'refresh time' to choose in the settings and so I thought (that) app had to 'ask' the system the actual battery level every time. Seems like this one is much better developed so, good to be known, I like it very much, also the ability to have the 'battery use' page open in a bunch of seconds is just all I need

I like extended controls, it shows battery percentage, too.
i got all 3 - circular batt, extended power widget and batt stat
UPDATED for the latest cog 2.3b3-its the last attachment(marked as 23b3) make sure you download the version that you are running or it will cause problems. Changed the circle batt in this version to the normal smooth green circle instead of the one shown. i think it matches a little better
Updated to work with Cog-2.3B-make sure you download the right one. The second attachment with 23b2 at the end is (obviously) for Cognition 2.3B2
The first attachment with no version at the end of the file name is for those who havent upgraded and are still on the older cog B9.
Im using a custom boot animation that matches this theme pretty well. It is the first one in this thread-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696193
Just got done making this theme for the captivate. This is a pretty full theme, also includes evo black bar, circle batt, and a nice notification pull down.
Its compatible with any cognition with the extended power options but the most recent 9.1.3 was the framework that was modified.
This took forever to finally finish.
Just put this on your internal SD and flash with clockwork. Will not wipe anything.
*Just fixed the icons in the power menu(airplane & silent)*
credit to DG for the rom this goes to
credit to fightspit for the circle battery
credit goes to faster3200 for a lot of the original images.
Looks nice! I'd love to try it out but I'm firmly of the belief that if it ain't broke don't fix it. I won't be messing with my phone again til something serious happens.
looks good. gonna backup and test it out

did you try rebooting or anything. its really just modifying the images in framework file, all the other files(even the xml's) in the framework folder are exactly the same.
the only reason i say that is because i have 2 captivates, and every once in a while its like there stuck. sometimes its when going from wifi to 3g and sometimes its just
random and cycling airplane mode will fix it if not then a reboot does.

UPDATE 9/3/11 - I have all the extras discussed added and the layout straight (I hope). There is now just a single zip attached that should be good to go. I would rather not add more functions at this time, as there are other projects I need to finish (ROMs, Power Widgets, 6-bar signal, etc., etc...)
Hi all. In the process of creating my upcoming Magnolia ROM for the Incredible based on the new official GB update, I managed to activate the quick settings tab in the notifications pull down bar. I haven't seen this anywhere else, so I thought I'd share with everyone so we can get more ROMs cooking off the official GB update.
This is just the stock SystemUI.apk with the quick settings tab activated (including the standard "extras" like brightness and media volume) and the GPS reticle hidden. No other changes have been made. Devs feel free to grab this and mod as you wish.
Just copy the zip file to your sdcard and flash as usual. As always, please backup first, and you flash this mod entirely at your own risk. If you want things rearranged or functions added, etc., please feel free to ask your favorite dev. I need to move onto some other stuff.....
Steve
Thanks Steve!! I spent most of yesterday trying to activate them with no luck. I can't wait to see what I was missing. Great work!!
Edit: I also confirm that after flashing your zip, they're working perfectly.

Worked great on my custom gingersense Rom. Thanks
Can anyone tell me how to add a few quicksettings like silent, vibrate and the such, or is this something a dev needs to do? I will be going to McSense as soon as these are implemented.
Worked great, I just used UOT on the file, mixed it up with Liberation 2.0 Beta 5, a new set of battery icons, and green overscroll. Now I just need one with Brightness, Rotation Lock, and screen timeout!
Thanks for the hard work, very appreciated!
