Hey people, anyone know how can i take screenshots on froyo?
Thanks all.
Drocap2 still works for me
DDMS never fails either.
yeah, drocap2 or "just shoot me" (or maybe "shootme"? it is on the Froyo Kang edition ROM, but i prefer dropcap2 because it has more options - shake, timer or notification trigger)
Yup, drocap2 for root users.
I do beleive ROOT is required for any screencapturing from ANY Android™ device.
DDMS, root not required.

This sounds silly, but are you sure debugging is on, and the drivers are installed on your PC?
I've taken screenshots with all of the above listed methods on froyo. drocap2 does flake sometimes if you rotate the phone or something, but it works. the shootme apps both work well. and of course ddms is the top if you are at your computer.
Taking screenshots on the vibrantin froyo
There is a separate screenshot program as part of mobile tracker on the 2.2 to rom for the vibrant. I know I have accidentally set it off

thank to this user nurre we have dark keys for cupcake/1.5
ok you kinda need root but lets face it if you haven't got root your a bit of a loser
Rename to darkkeys.apk and install just like any application, then when you first use it tell su permissions to allow always
optional: go to settings, applications, quick launch and then set a shortcut for dark keys so you can just click it off and on with just search+whatever
( i like to use search+0 )
WE CAN SEE ARE KEYBOARD
Oh btw this has been only tested on jf1.50 but I'm sure it will work on all builds
if not, comment and tell me
Tested and confirmed working, thank you so much!
-JF 1.50, Android Aero
How do you install this?
Like you would install any other non-market app.
I downloaded it, named it darkkeys.apk and it doesnt appear in the app installer.

Are you sure you haven't set Windows to hide known file extensions? In that case you might just have renamed the darkkeys.zip to darkkeys.apk.zip, which of course won't be recognized by the app installer.
I am having the same problem. So were do you go in windows to change this problem? Thanks for any help.
Nevermind i figured it out. thanks.

What do dark keys do? You're not talking about the virtual keyboard right? Or is it something that controls the back light on the G1?
Searched for it. So it turns off the light from the keyboard? How would this be useful? I have a black G1 so maybe this doesn't really effect me...

You have it reversed, its for having the keyboard lit as long as you want it and turning it off after your done.
I'm having the same issue, it wont go to sleep and it kills the battery crazy
add me to the list of users with backlight issues using this 1.5 version... Makes me a sad panda. I had taken this app for granted before upgrading - now I miss it big time.
While playing movies, for example, I want to capture the screen as a still picture. Same goes for a piece of info that I see on the webpage, etc.
In the iPhone environment, users could just press the power and home button simultaneously to capture it as a photo.
Is there anything like that on Android?
I only know one way and that requires root , then download app from market "Shootme"

Thanks for the info. Do you then assign a hardware button to do the capture? No problem capturing a movie while it is playing?

"Shootme" works by shacking phone left and right , i did not try capturing a movie but it should work it captures everything else on screen, there are more apps in market capable capturing screenshots , they all need root to best of my knowledge.

Shaking is a good way, as long as the orientation is not upset by it I guess.
Having go root the phone is a pity. Does anyone know of a non-root solution?

I dont have root either and i looked for screenshoot app as well, but i wasnt able to find any..
-TB-
It's due to Android's security settings that root is required to take screenshots.
No other way around it for now.
Read this thread, in the first post there is a link on how to take screenshots through the android SDK:

Wow, does it have to be this complicated just to capture screen?

Just wait for 2.2 if you don't want to root, since it will allow you to take a screenshot with .. I think it was the back-button and home-button.

I have a strange issue with my Samsung Galaxy S. While fiddling around with the phone, browsing or just listening to music, I sometimes hit an unknown key combination and the phone magically takes screenshot of the present screen and saves it inside a folder "Screen Captures" inside the gallery. Now, no screen capture programs are currently running so how does this happen?
I have the program ShootMe installed which needs root access to take screenshots. And I'm perfectly sure I quit it everytime I start it. Plus, I have no idea what key combination invokes the hidden screen-shot procedure.
I had a look at the processes running in the background and found this system process running:
com.sec.android.app.screencapture
What is this process? To my understanding, I think this is the only thing responsible for taking those myserious automatic screenshots. But why is it running? Is it ShootMe app? (I'm sure I have quit that app). Or what is it? Some malicious app or what?
Menu + Return does a screenshot. It is standard function for SGS since Froyo.

Use the free "shoot me" app from market for screenshots. I use this and it works pretty good.
drocap2 works wonderfully
You have to hold the back button and while doing so press power or home I believe. The apk gets ripped out of most custom roms and I normally use qtadb so I really can't remember exactly.
I use the shoot me app as well. Given it a try, I bet you will like it.

Thx, good app. But it if possible to use in-built function I'd like to use it. But I can't. Any described sequences back+home back+power don't work. I have stock Rogers ROM 2.2 and speedmod kernel.
I use ddms.bat.
Way better than some app.

Unless stuff is moving on the screen, in which case it doesn't look so hot (at least in my experience). Otherwise, yes.

Wanna turn your Screen off while watching videos over HDMI?
Or need a watchful Xoom but don´t want the screen to be on all the time?
Here´s the app you need!
Description:
The App adds the posibility to turn off the lcd backlight to your xoom. Its nothing less then a shutdown-button for your display backlight.
The app toggles your lcd backlight to zero and back, said doesn´t just overlay your screen with black, like the other apps inside the market.
it turns off your screen light completly , but the screen stays responsible and the devices stays awake.
Use it instead of locking your xoom, if you need your device itself to be active but dont need the display to be on, e.g. while you´re watching videos over hdmi, use your xoom as a vnc server or something like that.

Use this awesome little App with some "starter app" of your choice.
For example, use the Shaking Shortcurt App, register ToggleScreenXoom.apk and you could turn your screen on/off with just shaking your device.
(tested on xoom [email protected] but should work on every rooted xoom)
Thanks to [email protected] for his work on this.

does it work on xoom2?
Hello!
Fanstastic app.
Does it work on xoom2? with 3.2.2 rooted?
I used the old method that this thread started as, using market apps. Unfortunately it doesn't work with the Cornerstone version of the Eos roms. What exactly is app? Can you provide more detail? I don't just download apps to try them without some type of info...
I use the current method on cornerstone #16.

"Basically" the same as the old method, right. Just in one app without the need of configuration and with more flexibility to be launched by other apps.
Maybe you´ll try "Shaking Shortcurt". A nice app that lets you launch two other apps by shaking your xoom.
Yeah, think I'll try that instead of SwipePad. Since Swipepad rely's on the borders of the screen and Cornerstone alters the borders, I'm guessing that's the issue. Maybe the Shaking app won't have that issue.
Thanks again for the clarification, and the thread. I really can't believe this thread hasn't blown up!

just install the app and execute to turn off your screen and again (remember the position) to turn it back on.
or use a starter app like "Shaking Shortcut" to toggle the screen on and off by shaking your xoom.

NO!!! don't flash in recovery, i say that, mainly cause I don't know what it will do... you can install the app while ics is running, I think I used astro but can't remember. What you just asked was the same thing I had wondered.

You´re right. Thanks for the correction.
First post is edited to get it straight.
Does this only work on the xoom? I have an acer 510 and I want something like this. It sounds like this gets launched in conjunction with whatever app you launch. I'd rather that while on hdmi the tablet display is off entirely. Or maybe this does that as well.
So is this specific to the xoom?

According to the readme provided in the zip file this application seems to be specific for the Xoom, or at least a few tegra 2 tablets.
That's disappointing. Why would manufacturer's assume that a user wants the display to stay on while using hdmi?! How about a sane default like leave hdmi output on and turn off tablet display after the normal inactivity duration. But allow a keyboard/mouse not to be recognized as tablet activity.
Could this be modified to work with more devices? Or say newer tegra 3 devices if it's chipset specific. But really, ics should have some application layer to control things like hdmi res, screen active etc...
Nice! Works in AOKP
First of all, this is a great app, and it works well in AOKP (build 37).
To trigger the app, I set my "home" softkey on my xoom (in Rom Control) to trigger the app when the key is held. Even though you can't see the softkeys when on hdmi, after a while, its exact location is easy to recall.
It is really convenient. Thanks for the much needed addition to a great device.
